The reaction pp -> pf (pi0pi0pi0) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. The pi0pi0pi0 effective mass spectrum shows clear eta(547) and pi2(1670) signals. Branching ratios for the eta(547) and pi_2(1670) are given as well as upper limits for the decays of the omega(782), a1(1260) and a2(1320) into 3pi0., 10 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

The reactions pp -> pf (X0) ps, where X0 is observed decaying to eta etaprime and etaprime etaprime, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. This is the first time that these channels have been observed in central production and only the second time that the etaprime etaprime channel has been observed in any production mechanism. In the eta etaprime channel there is evidence for the f0(1500) and a peak at 1.95 GeV. The etaprime etaprime channel shows a peak at threshold which is compatible with having JPC = 2++ and spin projection JZ = 0.

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced π 0 π 0 channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f 0 (980), f 0 (1300) and f 0 (1500) in the the S -wave. and the f 2 (1270) is observed dominantly in the D 0 − -wave. In addition, there is evidence for a broad enhancement in the D -wave below 1 GeV.

A study of the reactions pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-) and pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-pi0) shows evidence for the K*K* and phi omega channels respectively. The K*K* mass spectrum shows a broad distribution with a maximum near threshold and an angular analysis shows that it is compatible with having JP = 2+. The behaviour of the cross-section as a function of centre of mass energy, and the four momentum transfer dependence, are compatible with what would be expected if the K*K* system was produced via double Pomeron exchange. The dPT behaviour of the phi omega channel is similar to what has been observed for all the undisputed qqbar states. In contrast, the dPT behaviour of the K*K* final state is similar to what has been observed for the phi phi final state and for previously observed glueball candidates.

A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and etaprime appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi0. The production properties of the eta and etaprime are not consistent with what is expected from double Pomeron exchange. In addition the production mechanism for the eta and etaprime is such that the production cross section are greatest when the azimuthal angle between the pT vectors of the two protons is 90 degrees., 11 pages, Latex, 3 Figures

A semi-empirical model is presented for the excitation of collective nuclear resonances induced by pions on nuclei in the Δ(1232) energy region. The physical features of the collective states have been extracted according to the model by fitting data from a collection of resonant π-nucleus elastic scattering cross-sections. The contributions to the total binding energy and to the width of a collective state per each additional nucleon involved in the resonance have been extracted. The interaction between the collective resonances and the surrounding nuclear medium is discussed.

ATLAS; The Tile Calorimeter, which constitutes the central section of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter, is a non-compensating sampling device made of iron and scintillating tiles. The construction phase of the calorimeter is nearly complete, and most of the effort now is directed toward the final assembly and commissioning in the underground experimental hall. The layout of the calorimeter and the tasks carried out during construction are described, first with a brief reminder of the requirements that drove the calorimeter design. During the last few years a comprehensive test-beam program has been followed in order to establish the calorimeter electromagnetic energy scale, to study its uniformity, and to compare real data to Monte Carlo simulation. The test-beam setup and first results from the data are described. During the test-beam period in 2004, lasting several months, data have been acquired with a complete slice of the central ATLAS calorimeter. The data collected in the test-beam are crucial in order to study algorithms for hadronic energy reconstruction using single particles. The generalization of these algorithms to reconstruct jet energies will be the starting point for numerous physics studies in which jets play a leading role. The results obtained in applying these algorithms to simulated di-jet events are given in the last section of the note.

New possibilities arising from the availability at GSI of antiproton beams, possibly polarised, are discussed. The investigation of the nucleon structure can be boosted by accessing in Drell-Yan processes experimental asymmetries related to cross-sections in which the parton distribution functions (PDF) only appear, without any contribution from fragmentation functions; such processes are not affected by the chiral suppression of the transversity function $h_1(x)$. Spin asymmetries in hyperon production and Single Spin Asymmetries are discussed as well, together with further items like electric and magnetic nucleonic form factors and open charm production. Counting rates estimations are provided for each physical case. The sketch of a possible experimental apparatus is proposed., Presented for the proceedings of ASI "Spin and Symmetry", Prague, July 5-10, 2004, to be published in Czech. J. Phys. 55 (2005)

The reactions pp -> pf (X0) ps, where X0 is observed decaying to pi0pi0pi0pi0, pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi+pi-, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870) in the pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi+pi- final states. The f2(1950) is consistent with being a single resonance with a dominant f2(1270)pipi decay mode. The f0(1370) is found to decay dominantly to rho-rho while the f0(1500) is found to decay to rho-rho and sigma-sigma., 14 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

The production and decay properties of the f0(1370), f0(1500), f0(2000) and f2(1950) have been studied in central pp interactions at 450 GeV/c. The dPT, phi and |t| distributions of these resonances are presented. For the J = 0 states, the f0(1370) and f0(2000) have similar dPT and phi dependences. These are different to the dPT and phi dependences of the f0(980), f0(1500) and f0(1710). For the J = 2 states the f2(1950) has different dependences to the f2(1270) and f2'(1520). This shows that the dPT and phi dependences are not just J phenomena., Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and K0K0 channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0. The D-wave shows evidence for the f2(1270)/a2(1320), the f2(1525) and the f2(2150) but there is no evidence for a statistically significant contribution in the D-wave in the 1.7 GeV mass region., Comment: 15 pages, Latex, 5 Figures

Evidence is presented that the Pomeron act as a non-conserved vector current. A study has been made of the azimuthal angle phi, which is defined as the angle between the pT vectors of the two outgoing protons, in the reaction pp -> pp(X0) for those resonances (X0) which are compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. These distributions have been compared with a model which describes the Pomeron as a non-conserved vector current and a qualitative agreement is found. In addition, when one of the particles exchanged is known to have spin 0, namely pi-Pomeron exchange, the phi distribution is flat., 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

Using a sample of $10^8$ triggered events, produced in $\pi^-$--$\,$Cu interactions at 350~GeV$/c$, we have identified 26 beauty events. The estimated background in this sample is $0.6 \pm 0.6$ events. From these data, assuming a linear A-dependence, we measure a beauty production cross-section integrated over all $x_F$ of $5.7 {+1.3 \atop -1.1}~{\mathrm {(stat.)}} {+0.6 \atop -0.5}~{\mathrm {(syst.)}}~$nb/N.

Results are presented of an analysis of the reactions pp -> pf(k0k+pi-)ps and pp -> pf(K0K0pi0)ps at 450 GeV/c. Clear f1(1285) and f1(1420) signals are seen and a spin parity analysis shows that both have IG JPC=0+ 1++. The f1(1285) decays to a0(980)pi and the f1(1420) decays to K* Kbar. Both states have a similar dependence as a function of dPT consistent with what has been observed for other qqbar states. Evidence is also presented for a K*Kbar decay mode of the eta2(1620)., 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

The reaction pp -> pf (pi+pi-pi+pi-) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. A spin analysis has been performed and the dPT filter applied. In addition to the well known f1(1285) there is evidence for two JPC=2-+ states called the eta2(1620) and eta2(1875) and a broad scalar called the f0(2000). The production of these states as a function of the dPT kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for qqbar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for qqbar states. The reaction pp → p f ( π + π − π + π − ) p s has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gl states. A spin analysis has been performed and the dP T filter applied. In addition to the well know f 1 (1285) there is evidence for two J PC = 2 −+ states called the η 2 (1620) and η 2 (1875) and a broad scalar called the f 0 (2000). The production of these states as a function of the dP T kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for q q states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for q q states. We describe the detectors and trigger system used in the CERN WA92 experiment. The experiment was designed to study the production and decay of beauty particles from 350 GeV/$c\,$ $\,\pi^-$ interactions in copper and tungsten targets. Charged particle tracking is performed using the Omega spectrometer. Silicon microstrip detectors are used to provide precise tracking information in the region of the production and the decay of heavy-flavoured particles and to trigger on the resulting high impact parameter tracks. The precision of vertex reconstruction corresponds to $\pm 3.7\%$ of the mean B-decay proper lifetime. Lepton and high transverse momentum hadron signals are also used in the trigger, which accepts 29\% of B-decays and rejects 98\% of non-beauty interactions.

We have searched for the decay D 0 → μ + μ − among 1.25 × 10 5 μ + μ − pairs produced by 350 GeV/ c π − particles interacting in copper and tungsten targets. Using a high-resolution silicon-microstrip detector followed by a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and a muon filter we are able to discriminate between prompt and non-prompt muons and to measure dimuon masses. No candidate compatible with a D 0 → μ + μ − decay has been found, allowing us to set an upper limit on the branching fraction B( D 0 → μ + μ − ) of 7.6 × 10 −6 at the 90% confidence level.

The energy loss spectrum of 150 GeV muons has been measured with a prototype of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter in the H8 beam of the CERN SPS. The differential probability ${\rm {d}}P/{\rm {d}}v$ per radiation length of a fractional energy loss $v = \Delta E_{\mu} / E_{\mu}$ has been measured in the range $v$ = 0.01 $\div$ 0.95; it is compared with the theoretical predictions for energy losses due to bremsstrahlung and production of electron-positron pairs or of energetic knock-on electrons. The integrated probability $\int_{0.01}^{0.95} ({\rm {d}}P/{\rm {d}}v) {\rm {d}}v$ is $(1.610\pm0.015_{{\rm {stat}}}\pm0.105_{{\rm {syst}}})\cdot10^{-3}$ in agreement with the theoretical predictions $1.556\cdot10^{-3}$ and $1.619\cdot10^{-3}$. Agreement with theory is also found in two intervals of $v$ where production of electron-positron pairs and knock-on electrons dominates. In the region of bremsstrahlung dominance ($v$ = 0.12 $\div$~0.95) the measured integrated probability $(1.160\pm0.040_{{\rm {stat}}}\pm0.075_{{\rm {syst}}})\cdot 10^{-4}$ is in agreement with the theoretical value of $1.185 \cdot 10^{-4} $, obtained using the Petrukhin and Shestakov description of the bremsstrahlung process. The same result is about 3.6 standard deviations (defined as the quadratic sum of statistical and systematic errors) lower than the theoretical prediction of $ 1.472\cdot 10^{-4}$, obtained using Tsai's description of bremsstrahlung.
