Abstract For the development of nanofilters and nanosensors, we wish to know the impact of size on their geometric, electronic, and thermal stabilities. Using the semiempirical tight binding method as implemented in the xTB program, we characterized Möbius boron-nitride and carbon-based nanobelts with different sizes and compared them to each other and to normal nanobelts. The calculated properties include the infrared spectra, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), the energy gap, the chemical potential, and the molecular hardness. The agreement between the peak positions from theoretical infrared spectra compared with experimental ones for all systems validates the methodology that we used. Our findings show that for the boron-nitride-based nanobelts, the calculated properties have an opposite monotonic relationship with the size of the systems, whereas for the carbon-based nanobelts, the properties show the same monotonic relationship for both types of nanobelts. Also, the torsion presented on the Möbius nanobelts, in the case of boron-nitride, induced an inhomogeneous surface distribution for the HOMO orbitals. High-temperature molecular dynamics also allowed us to contrast carbon-based systems with boron-nitride systems at various temperatures. In all cases, the properties vary with the increase in size of the nanobelts, indicating that it is possible to choose the desired values by changing the size and type of the systems. This work has many implications for future studies, for example our results show that carbon-based nanobelts did not break as we increased the temperature, whereas boron-nitride nanobelts had a rupture temperature that varied with their size; this is a meaningful result that can be tested when the use of more accurate simulation methods become practical for such systems in the future.

Objective: The first COVID-19 pandemic wave was a period of reduced surgical activity and redistribution of resources to only those with late stage or critical presentations. This Vascular and Endovascular Research Network COVID-19 Vascular Service (COVER) study aimed to describe the six-month outcomes of patients who underwent open surgery and or endovascular interventions for major vascular conditions during this period., Methods: In this international, multicentre, prospective, observational study, centres recruited consecutive patients undergoing vascular procedures over a 12-week period. The study opened in March 2020 and closed to recruitment in August 2020. Patient demographics, procedure details, and post-operative outcomes were collected on a secure online database. The reported outcomes at 30 days and six months were post-operative complications, re-interventions, and all cause in-hospital mortality rate. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with six-month mortality rate., Results: Data were collected on 3 150 vascular procedures, including 1 380 lower limb revascularisations, 609 amputations, 403 aortic, 289 carotid, and 469 other vascular interventions. The median age was 68 years (interquartile range 59, 76), 73.5% were men, and 1.7% had confirmed COVID-19 disease. The cumulative all cause in-hospital, 30-day, and six-month mortality rates were 9.1%, 10.4%, and 12.8%, respectively. The six-month mortality rate was 32.1% (95% CI 24.2-40.8%) in patients with confirmed COVID-19 compared with 12.0% (95% CI 10.8-13.2%) in those without. After adjustment, confirmed COVID-19 was associated with a three times higher odds of six-month death (adjusted OR 3.25, 95% CI 2.18-4.83). Increasing ASA grade (3-5 vs . 1-2), frailty scores 4-9, diabetes mellitus, and urgent and or immediate procedures were also independently associated with increased odds of death by six months, while statin use had a protective effect., Conclusion: During the first wave of the pandemic, the six-month mortality rate after vascular and endovascular procedures was higher compared with historic pre-pandemic studies and associated with COVID-19 disease., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare. Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field., (© 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Context: SARS-CoV-2, responsible for COVID-19, has led to over 500 million infections and more than 6 million deaths globally. There have been limited effective treatments available. The study aims to find a drug that can prevent the virus from entering host cells by targeting specific sites on the virus's spike protein., Method: We examined 13,397 compounds from the Malaria Box library against two specific sites on the spike protein: the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and a predicted cryptic pocket. Using virtual screening, molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and MMPBSA techniques, they evaluated the stability of two compounds. TCMDC-124223 showed high stability and binding energy in the RBD, while TCMDC-133766 had better binding energy in the cryptic pocket. The study also identified that the interacting residues are conserved, which is crucial for addressing various virus variants. The findings provide insights into the potential of small molecules as drugs against the spike protein., (© 2024. The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Context: The interaction between carbon nanostructures and heavy metal clusters is of great interest due to their potential applications as sensors and filters to remove the former from environment. In this work, we investigated the interaction between two types of carbon nanobelts (Möbius-type nanobelt and simple nanobelt) and nickel, cadmium, and lead nanoclusters. Our aim was to determine how both systems interact which would shed light on the potential applications of the carbon nanostructures as pollutant removal and detecting devices., Methods: To investigate the interaction between carbon nanostructures and heavy metal nanoclusters, we utilized the semiempirical tight binding framework provided by xTB software with the GFN2-xTB Hamiltonian. We performed calculations to determine the best interaction site, lowest energy geometries, complexes stability (using molecular dynamics at 298K), binding energy, and electronic properties. We also carried out a topological study to investigate the nature and intensity of the bonds formed between the metal nanoclusters and the nanobelts. Our results demonstrate that heavy metal nanoclusters have a favorable binding affinity towards both nanobelts, with the Möbius-type nanobelt having a stronger interaction. Additionally, our calculations reveal that the nickel nanocluster has the lowest binding energy, displaying the greatest charge transfer with the nanobelts, which was nearly twice that of the cadmium and lead nanoclusters. Our combined results lead to the conclusion that the nickel nanoclusters are chemisorbed, whereas cadmium and lead nanoclusters are physisorbed in both nanobelts. Introduction: This study explores the relationship between emotional support, perceived risk and mental health outcomes among health care workers, who face high rates of burnout and mental distress since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A cross-sectional, multicentred online survey of health care workers in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada, during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic evaluated coping strategies, confidence in infection control, impact of previous work during the 2003 SARS outbreak and emotional support. Mental health outcomes were assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, the Impact of Event Scale - Revised and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)., Results: Of 3852 participants, 8.2% sought professional mental health services while 77.3% received emotional support from family, 74.0% from friends and 70.3% from colleagues. Those who felt unsupported in their work had higher odds ratios of experiencing moderate and severe symptoms of anxiety (odds ratio [OR] = 2.23; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.84-2.69), PTSD (OR = 1.88; 95% CI: 1.58-2.25) and depression (OR = 1.88; 95% CI: 1.57-2.25). Nearly 40% were afraid of telling family about the risks they were exposed to at work. Those who were able to share this information demonstrated lower risk of anxiety (OR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.48-0.69), PTSD (OR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.41-0.56) and depression (OR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.47-0.65)., Conclusion: Informal sources of support, including family, friends and colleagues, play an important role in mitigating distress and should be encouraged and utilized more by health care workers., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare.

Background: Social deprivation is associated with poor clinical outcomes. It is known to have an impact on length of stay and post-operative mortality across a number of other surgical specialties. This study evaluates the impact of social deprivation on outcomes following fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (FEVAR)., Methods: All elective FEVARs performed between 2010 and 2018 at a tertiary vascular center were analyzed. Deprivation (index of multiple deprivation [IMD]) data was sourced from the English indices of deprivation 2019, by postcode. Primary outcome was overall survival by Kaplan-Meier. Secondary outcomes included length of hospital stay (LOS) and complications. Cox-proportional hazard analyses were conducted., Results: Some 132 FEVAR patients were followed-up for 3.7 (SD 2.2) years. Fifty-seven patients lived in areas with high levels of deprivation (IMD 1-3), 34 in areas with moderate deprivation (IMD 4-6) and 41 in areas with the lowest level (IMD 7-10) of deprivation. Groups were comparable for Age, BMI, AAA diameter and co-morbidity. A higher proportion of patients from deprived areas had renal failure (15% [26.3%] vs. 9% [11.8%] P = 0.019) but no overall difference in procedure time was observed (200 min [155-250] vs. 180 min [145-240] P = 0.412). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated significantly poorer survival for patients living in areas with high levels of deprivation (IMD 1-3) (P = 0.03). Mortality was comparable for IMD 4-6 and 7-10 groups. Patients from the most deprived areas had longer hospital stay (6 days [4-9] vs. 5 [3-7] P = 0.005) and higher all-cause complication rates (21 [36.8%] vs. 14 [18.4%] P = 0.02). Decreasing IMD was associated with worse survival (HR -0.85 [0.75-0.97] [P = 0.02])., Conclusions: Social deprivation was associated with increased mortality, length of stay and all-cause complication rates in patients undergoing FEVAR for complex abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). We use the GW100 benchmark set to systematically judge the quality of several perturbation theories against high-level quantum chemistry methods. First of all, we revisit the reference CCSD(T) ionization potentials for this popular benchmark set and establish a revised set of CCSD(T) results. Then, for all of these 100 molecules, we calculate the HOMO energy within second and third-order perturbation theory (PT2 and PT3), and, GW as post-Hartree-Fock methods. We found GW to be the most accurate of these three approximations for the ionization potential, by far. Going beyond GW by adding more diagrams is a tedious and dangerous activity: We tried to complement GW with second-order exchange (SOX), with second-order screened exchange (SOSEX), with interacting electron-hole pairs ( W TDHF ), and with a GW density-matrix ( γ GW ). Only the γ GW result has a positive impact. Finally using an improved hybrid functional for the non-interacting Green's function, considering it as a cheap way to approximate self-consistency, the accuracy of the simplest GW approximation improves even more. Objective: Explore how previous work during the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak affects the psychological response of clinical and non-clinical healthcare workers (HCWs) to the current COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A cross-sectional, multi-centered hospital online survey of HCWs in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. Mental health outcomes of HCWs who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic and the SARS outbreak were assessed using Impact of Events-Revised scale (IES-R), Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)., Results: Among 3852 participants, moderate/severe scores for symptoms of post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (50.2%), anxiety (24.6%), and depression (31.5%) were observed among HCWs. Work during the 2003 SARS outbreak was reported by 1116 respondents (29.1%), who had lower scores for symptoms of PTSD (P = .002), anxiety (P < .001), and depression (P < .001) compared to those who had not worked during the SARS outbreak. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed non-clinical HCWs during this pandemic were at higher risk of anxiety (OR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.19-2.15, P = .01) and depressive symptoms (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.34-3.07, P < .001). HCWs using sedatives (OR, 2.55; 95% CI, 1.61-4.03, P < .001), those who cared for only 2-5 patients with COVID-19 (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.06-2.38, P = .01), and those who had been in isolation for COVID-19 (OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 0.96-1.93, P = .05), were at higher risk of moderate/severe symptoms of PTSD. In addition, deterioration in sleep was associated with symptoms of PTSD (OR, 4.68, 95% CI, 3.74-6.30, P < .001), anxiety (OR, 3.09, 95% CI, 2.11-4.53, P < .001), and depression (OR 5.07, 95% CI, 3.48-7.39, P < .001)., Conclusion: Psychological distress was observed in both clinical and non-clinical HCWs, with no impact from previous SARS work experience. Objectives: Venous thromboembolism is a potentially fatal complication of superficial endovenous treatment. Proper risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis could mitigate this hazard; however, there are currently no evidence-based or consensus guidelines. This study surveyed UK and Republic of Ireland vascular consultants to determine areas of consensus., Methods: A 32-item survey was sent to vascular consultants via the Vascular and Endovascular Research Network (phase 1). These results generated 10 consensus statements which were redistributed (phase 2). 'Good' and 'very good' consensus were defined as endorsement/rejection of statements by >67% and >85% of respondents, respectively., Results: Forty-two consultants completed phase 1. This generated seven statements regarding risk factors mandating peri-procedural pharmacoprophylaxis and three statements regarding specific pharmacoprophylaxis regimes. Forty-seven consultants completed phase 2. Regarding venous thromboembolism risk factors mandating pharmacoprophylaxis, 'good' and 'very good' consensus was achieved for 5/7 and 2/7 statements, respectively. Regarding specific regimens, 'very good' consensus was achieved for 3/3 statements., Conclusions: The main findings from this study were that there was 'good' or 'very good' consensus that patients with any of the seven surveyed risk factors should be given pharmacoprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin. High-risk patients should receive one to two weeks of pharmacoprophylaxis rather than a single dose.

We present NECI, a state-of-the-art implementation of the Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) algorithm, a method based on a stochastic application of the Hamiltonian matrix on a sparse sampling of the wave function. The program utilizes a very powerful parallelization and scales efficiently to more than 24 000 central processing unit cores. In this paper, we describe the core functionalities of NECI and its recent developments. This includes the capabilities to calculate ground and excited state energies, properties via the one- and two-body reduced density matrices, as well as spectral and Green's functions for ab initio and model systems. A number of enhancements of the bare FCIQMC algorithm are available within NECI, allowing us to use a partially deterministic formulation of the algorithm, working in a spin-adapted basis or supporting transcorrelated Hamiltonians. NECI supports the FCIDUMP file format for integrals, supplying a convenient interface to numerous quantum chemistry programs, and it is licensed under GPL-3.0.

Objectives: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after open (OAR) or endovascular (EVAR) aortic repair is unknown. This research assessed the proportion of patients who develop AKI after aortic intervention using validated criteria, and explored AKI risk factors., Methods: This was a multicentre national prospective cohort study. Eleven centres recruited patients undergoing EVAR or OAR (September 2017-December 2018). Serum creatinine (SCr) and urine outputs were measured over a minimum of 48 h or throughout the index inpatient stay to define post-operative AKI using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. Renal decline at 30 days was calculated using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the Major Adverse Kidney Events (MAKE) 30 day composite endpoint (consisting of: death, new dialysis, > 25% eGFR decline)., Results: 300 patients (mean age: 71 years, standard deviation [SD] 4 years; 9% females) were included, who underwent: infrarenal endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) 139 patients, fenestrated EVAR (fEVAR) 30, branched EVAR (bEVAR) seven, infrarenal open aneurysm repair (OAR) 98, juxtarenal OAR 26. Overall, 24% of patients developed stage 1 AKI (defined at 48 h as per KDIGO), 2.7% stage 2 AKI and 1% needed renal replacement therapy before discharge. AKI proportions per intervention were: infrarenal EVAR 18%; fEVAR 27%; bEVAR 71%; infrarenal OAR 41%; juxtarenal OAR 63%. Older age (odds ratio [OR] 1.44 for EVAR, 1.58 for OAR), lower baseline eGFR (OR 0.88 EVAR, 0.74 OAR), and ischaemic heart disease (OR 4.42 EVAR, 5.80 OAR) were the main predictors of AKI for infrarenal EVAR and OAR. Overall, 24% developed the MAKE30 endpoint. All patients who died (0.6%) or developed a major cardiac event (5.6%) at one year had developed AKI., Conclusion: AKI and short term renal decline after aortic intervention are common. Age, renal function, and cardiovascular disease are the main risk factors. In this Article we describe the OpenMolcas environment and invite the computational chemistry community to collaborate. The open-source project already includes a large number of new developments realized during the transition from the commercial MOLCAS product to the open-source platform. The paper initially describes the technical details of the new software development platform. This is followed by brief presentations of many new methods, implementations, and features of the OpenMolcas program suite. These developments include novel wave function methods such as stochastic complete active space self-consistent field, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods, and hybrid multiconfigurational wave function and density functional theory models. Some of these implementations include an array of additional options and functionalities. The paper proceeds and describes developments related to explorations of potential energy surfaces. Here we present methods for the optimization of conical intersections, the simulation of adiabatic and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, and interfaces to tools for semiclassical and quantum mechanical nuclear dynamics. Furthermore, the Article describes features unique to simulations of spectroscopic and magnetic phenomena such as the exact semiclassical description of the interaction between light and matter, various X-ray processes, magnetic circular dichroism, and properties. Finally, the paper describes a number of built-in and add-on features to support the OpenMolcas platform with postcalculation analysis and visualization, a multiscale simulation option using frozen-density embedding theory, and new electronic and muonic basis sets.

Objective: To date there has been no comparison of outcomes of endovenous radiofrequency (RF) devices. The 3-RF trial is the first randomised controlled trial of three commercially available RF ablation technologies., Methods: Patients were recruited [182/302 patients with great saphenous vein (GSV) incompetence] into a prospective double blind randomised trial of Venefit, radiofrequency induced thermal therapy (RFITT), and endovenous radiofrequency (EVRF). The primary outcome measure was GSV closure (total/partial/failed) at six months. Secondary outcome measures included ablation times, complications, pain scores, analgesia requirements, and quality of life (QoL) scores to 12 months., Results: Patients treated [180: Venefit (57), RFITT (64), EVRF (59)] were matched for age, sex, and vein characteristics. At six months, complete GSV closure was significantly better after Venefit and RFITT treatment (100% and 98%, respectively) compared with EVRF treatment (79%, p < .001). Mean treatment time was significantly faster for RFITT than for Venefit and EVRF (p < .0001). Euroqol 5D (EQ5D) visual analogue score (VAS) did not differ between groups at any time point. The only difference between groups in EQ5D domain scores was for the pain/discomfort domain at two weeks when significantly fewer EVRF patients reported no problems compared with Venefit and RFITT. This difference had disappeared at six and 12 months. Background: Previous research has suggested that patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are not offered adequate risk factor modification, despite their high cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the cardiovascular profiles of patients with PAD and quantify the survival benefits of target-based risk factor modification., Methods: The Vascular and Endovascular Research Network (VERN) prospectively collected cardiovascular profiles of patients with PAD from ten UK vascular centres (April to June 2018) to assess practice against UK and European goal-directed best medical therapy guidelines. Risk and benefits of risk factor control were estimated using the SMART-REACH model, a validated cardiovascular prediction tool for patients with PAD., Results: Some 440 patients (mean(s.d.) age 70(11) years, 24·8 per cent women) were included in the study. Mean(s.d.) cholesterol (4·3(1·2) mmol/l) and LDL-cholesterol (2·7(1·1) mmol/l) levels were above recommended targets; 319 patients (72·5 per cent) were hypertensive and 343 (78·0 per cent) were active smokers. Only 11·1 per cent of patients were prescribed high-dose statin therapy and 39·1 per cent an antithrombotic agent. The median calculated risk of a major cardiovascular event over 10 years was 53 (i.q.r. 44-62) per cent. Controlling all modifiable cardiovascular risk factors based on UK and European guidance targets (LDL-cholesterol less than 2 mmol/l, systolic BP under 140 mmHg, smoking cessation, antiplatelet therapy) would lead to an absolute risk reduction of the median 10-year cardiovascular risk by 29 (20-38) per cent with 6·3 (4·0-9·3) cardiovascular disease-free years gained., Conclusion: The medical management of patients with PAD in this secondary care cohort was suboptimal. Introduction: Surgical site infections (SSIs) following groin incision for arterial exposure are commonplace and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality following major arterial surgery. Published incidence varies considerably. The primary aim of GIVE will be to compare individual units' practice with established guidelines from The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Secondary aims will be to describe the contemporary rate of SSI in patients undergoing groin incision for arterial exposure, to identify risk factors for groin wound infection, to examine the value of published tools in the prediction of SSI, to identify areas of equipoise which could be examined in future efficacy/effectiveness trials and to compare UK SSI rates with international centres., Methods and Analysis: This international, multicentre, prospective observational study will be delivered via the Vascular and Endovascular Research Network (VERN). Participating centres will identify all patients undergoing clean emergency or elective groin incision(s) for arterial intervention during a consecutive 3-month period. Follow up data will be captured at 90 days after surgery. SSIs will be defined according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria. Data will be gathered centrally using an anonymised electronic data collection tool or secure email transfer., Ethics and Dissemination: This study will be registered as a clinical audit at all participating UK centres; research ethics approval is not required. National leads will oversee the appropriate registration and approvals in countries outside the UK as required. Site specific reports of SSI rates will be provided to each participating centre. Background: This is a review of our experience in creating transposed femoral vein (TFV) fistulas and some of the lessons we have learnt while performing this challenging procedure over the last 5 years., Methods: This is retrospective review of patients who underwent TFV fistula formation between January 2013 and December 2017., Results: Fifteen patients underwent FV fistula formation with 4 cases being excluded from analysis. Median follow-up was 1.17 years (interquartile range 0.19-3.59 years). Primary and primary-assisted patency rates were 75% and 100% at 6 months, respectively, and 66.7% and 100% at 1 year., Conclusions: Our patient group showed good fistula patency at 1 year and did not experience any incidence of ischemic steal syndrome. We believe this to be due to careful preoperative patient assessment and meticulous surgical technique. Background: Unexplained deaths in infancy comprise 'sudden infant death syndrome' (SIDS) and deaths without ascertained cause. They are typically sleep-related, perhaps triggered by unsafe sleep environments. Preterm birth may increase risk, and varies with ethnicity. We aimed to compare ethnic-specific rates of unexplained infant death, explore sociodemographic explanations for ethnic variation, and examine the role of preterm birth., Methods: We analysed routine data for 4.6 million live singleton births in England and Wales 2006-2012, including seven non-White ethnic groups ranging in size from 29 313 (Mixed Black-African-White) to 180 265 (Pakistani). We calculated rates, birth-year-adjusted ORs, and effects of further adjustments on the χ 2 for ethnic variation., Results: There were 1559 unexplained infant deaths. Crude rates per 1000 live singleton births were as follows: 0.1-0.2 for Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, White Non-British, Black African; 0.4 for White British; 0.6-0.7 for Mixed Black-African-White, Mixed Black-Caribbean-White, Black Caribbean. Birth-year-adjusted ORs relative to White British ranged from 0.38 (95% CI 0.24 to 0.60) for Indian babies to 1.73 (1.21 to 2.47) for Black Caribbean (χ 2 (10 df)=113.6, p<0.0005). Combined adjustment for parents' marital/registration status and mother's country of birth (UK/non-UK) attenuated the ethnic variation. Adjustments for gestational age at birth, maternal age and area deprivation made little difference., Conclusion: Substantial ethnic disparity in risk of unexplained infant death exists in England and Wales. Apparently not attributable to preterm birth or area deprivation, this may reflect cultural differences in infant care. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus appears to be negatively associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm; however, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the currently understood biological pathways underlying this relationship., Methods: A review of the literature ('diabetes' OR 'hyperglycaemia' AND 'aneurysm') was performed and relevant studies grouped into biological pathways., Results: This review identified a number of biological pathways through which diabetes mellitus may limit the presence, growth and rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms. These include those influencing extracellular matrix volume, extracellular matrix glycation, the formation of advanced glycation end-products, inflammation, oxidative stress and intraluminal thrombus biology. In addition, there is an increasing evidence to suggest that the medications used to treat diabetes can also limit the development and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms., Conclusion: The negative association between diabetes and abdominal aortic aneurysm is robust. Future studies should attempt to target the pathways identified in this review to develop novel therapeutic agents aimed at slowing or even halting aneurysm progression.
