Plastic waste has a negative impact on marine ecosystems and the quantity of this source of anthropogenic pollution continues to increase. Several studies have investigated plastic biodegradation using various microorganisms. In this study, we isolated fungi from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste on Korean seacoasts and evaluated their ability to degrade plastic by comparing the diameters of the clear zones they formed on polycaprolactone (PCL) agar. We isolated 262 strains from 47 plastic waste sources and identified 108 fungal species via molecular methods. The PCL agar assay revealed that 87 species presented with varying degrees of PCL degradation capacity. Among them, certain fungal species were strong PCL degraders. The present study demonstrated the possibility that some fungi inhabiting plastic could potentially degrade it in the marine environment. We believe that the discoveries made herein lay theoretical and practical foundations for the development of novel bioremediation systems for marine plastispheres and help mitigate the environmental pollution issues related to plastic wastes.

The genomes of two Penicillium strains were sequenced and studied in this study: strain 2HH was isolated from the digestive tract of Anobium punctatum beetle larva in 1979 and the cellulase hypersecretory strain S1M29, derived from strain 2HH by a long-term mutagenesis process. With these data, the strains were reclassified and insight is obtained on molecular features related to cellulase hyperproduction and the albino phenotype of the mutant. Both strains were previously identified as Penicillium echinulatum and this investigation indicated that these should be reclassified. Phylogenetic and phenotype data showed that these strains represent a new Penicillium species in series Oxalica, for which the name Penicillium ucsense is proposed here. Six additional strains (SFC101850, SFCP10873, SFCP10886, SFCP10931, SFCP10932 and SFCP10933) collected from the marine environment in the Republic of Korea were also classified as this species, indicating a worldwide distribution of this new taxon. Compared to the closely related strain Penicillium oxalicum 114-2, the composition of cell wall-associated proteins of P. ucsense 2HH shows five fewer chitinases, considerable differences in the number of proteins related to β-D-glucan metabolism. The genomic comparison of 2HH and S1M29 highlighted single amino-acid substitutions in two major proteins (BGL2 and FlbA) that can be associated with the hyperproduction of cellulases. The study of melanin pathways shows that the S1M29 albino phenotype resulted from a single amino-acid substitution in the enzyme ALB1, a precursor of the 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN)-melanin biosynthesis. Our study provides important knowledge towards understanding species distribution, molecular mechanisms, melanin production and cell wall biosynthesis of this new Penicillium species.

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island country in the western Pacific and is a known biodiversity hotspot. However, a relatively small number of fungi (236 species) have been reported till July 2021. Since fungi play major ecological roles in ecosystems, we investigated the fungal diversity of FSM from various sources over 2016 and 2017 and constructed a local fungal inventory, which also included the previously reported species. Fruiting bodies were collected from various host trees and fungal strains were isolated from marine and terrestrial environments. A total of 99 species, of which 78 were newly reported in the FSM, were identified at the species level using a combination of molecular and morphological approaches. Many fungal species were specific to the environment, host, or source. Upon construction of the fungal inventory, 314 species were confirmed to reside in the FSM. This inventory will serve as an important basis for monitoring fungal diversity and identifying novel biological resources in FSM.

Ticagrelor-based dual antiplatelet therapy (TDAPT) provides potent antiplatelet inhibition but may increase the bleeding risk in Asian populations. We investigated the impact of the early use of low-dose TDAPT (l-TDAPT; 120 mg) on clinical outcomes in Korean patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A multicenter prospective clinical cohort study was conducted with patients on standard-dose TDAPT (s-TDAPT; 180 mg) after PCI for complex lesions. A major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) was defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and repeat revascularization. A net clinical event (NCE) was defined as a composite of bleeding events and MACEs. Among the 772 patients on s-TDAPT, 115 (14.8%) switched to l-TDAPT within 6 months. Common reasons for the regimen changes were switching as planned (38.8%), dyspnea (25.5%), and bleeding (23.6%). A multivariate Cox proportional hazard model (CPH) showed that the risks of MACE, bleeding events, and NCE were not different between the l-TDAPT and s-TDAPT groups during the entire follow-up period and beyond 6 months after PCI. Multivariate time-varying CPH also showed similar results. De-escalation with low-dose ticagrelor within 6 months after PCI is feasible and safe even in patients with complex lesions harboring a high ischemic event risk.

PURPOSE Residual cardiovascular risk reduction by fenofibrate in patients with high serum triglyceride (TG) levels despite previous statin monotherapy is not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a combination of choline fenofibrate and statin in patients with inadequately controlled TG levels despite previous statin monotherapy. METHODS This prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind study was conducted in Korea. A total of 133 patients with controlled LDL-C but elevated TG levels, already receiving statin monotherapy, were enrolled in the study, which was conducted from July 2018 to December 2019. Patients were randomly assigned to receive combination therapy with choline fenofibrate and statin or statin monotherapy in a 1:1 ratio. After 8 weeks of treatment, the lipid profiles and safety parameters of the patients in the 2 groups were compared. FINDINGS The study included 127 patients (64 in the combination group and 63 in the control group) older than 19 years. After 8 weeks of therapy, mean serum TG levels significantly decreased from 269.8 to 145.5 mg/dL (P < 0.0001) in the combination therapy group, whereas no significant changes occurred in the statin monotherapy group (from 271.1 to 280.5 mg/dL). Contrarily, the mean serum HDLC levels significantly increased from 45.0 to 50.4 mg/dL (P = 0.0004) in the combination therapy group, whereas there were no significant changes in the monotherapy group (from 44.3 to 44.7 mg/dL). There were no additional serious adverse events in the combination therapy group compared with the statin monotherapy group. IMPLICATIONS The combination therapy using choline fenofibrate and statin was found to be effective in serum TG control and likely tolerable in patients with high TG levels despite statin monotherapy. A larger study, conducted for a longer duration, is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of this combination in reducing cardiovascular risk. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03874260.

During a disease survey on weeds and minor cultivated crops in Korea, a brown leaf spot disease was observed on Sonchus asper. Leaf lesions were round or irregular in shape, and grayish brown to brown with a purple margin. In severe infection, lesions enlarged and coalesced, resulting in blighting of the leaves. The isolates from these leaf lesions were identified as Alternaira sonchi based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of Internal transcribed spacer region, Alternaria allergen a1, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, RNA polymerase II, and translation elongation factor genes. This study provides a comprehensive description of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetical traits of A. sonchi causing brown leaf spot on S. asper in Korea.

The genus Laccaria (Hydnangiaceae, Agaricales) plays an important role in forest ecosystems as an ectomycorrhizal fungus, contributing to nutrient cycles through symbiosis with many types of trees. Though understanding Laccaria diversity and distribution patterns, as well as its association with host plants, is fundamental to constructing a balanced plant diversity and conducting effective forest management, previous studies have not been effective in accurately investigating, as they relied heavily on specimen collection alone. To investigate the true diversity and distribution pattern of Laccaria species and determine their host types, we used four different approaches: specimen-based analysis, open database search (ODS), NGS analysis, and species-specific PCR (SSP). As a result, 14 Laccaria species have been confirmed in Korea. Results regarding the species distribution pattern were different between specimen-based analysis and SSP. However, when both were integrated, the exact distribution pattern of each Laccaria species was determined. In addition, the SSP revealed that many Laccaria species have a wide range of host types. This study shows that using these four different approaches is useful in determining the diversity, distribution, and host of ECM fungi. Furthermore, results obtained for Laccaria will serve as a baseline to help understand the role of ECM fungi in forest management in response to climate change.

Penicillium is the most common fungal genus in various terrestrial and marine environments. The number of new and unrecorded Penicillium species from various substrates and habitats are continuously increasing. As part of a project to discover indigenous fungi in South Korea, three unrecorded Penicillium species were isolated from mudflats and seaweeds. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of β-tubulin and calmodulin loci, they were identified as P. amaliae, P. infrabuccalum, and P. manginii. Here, we provide a detailed morphological description and sequence information of these previously unrecorded species.

The genus Aspergillus is commonly isolated from various marine and terrestrial environments; however, only a few species have been studied in rhizosphere soil. As part of the Korean indigenous fungal excavation project, we investigated fungal diversity from rhizosphere soil, focusing on Aspergillus species. A total of 13 strains were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of three different plants. Based on phylogenetic analysis of β-tubulin and calmodulin and morphological characteristics, we identified five Aspergillus species. A. calidoustus and A. pseudodeflectus were commonly isolated from the rhizosphere soil. Four species were confirmed as unrecorded species in Korea: A. calidoustus, A. dimorphicus, A. germanicus, and A. pseudodeflecuts. The detailed morphological descriptions of these unrecorded species are provided.

Lactifluus (Pers.) Roussel is an ectomycorrhizal genus that was recently recognized to be distinct from the genus Lactarius. To date, 216 Lactifluus species have been reported worldwide. Misidentification of Lactifluus species is common because of intraspecific morphological variation, cryptic diversity, and the limited number of taxonomic keys available. Molecular data are indispensable for species delimitation; a multilocus phylogenetic analysis showed that most Asian Lactifluus species are not conspecific with morphologically similar species present on other continents. In particular, Korea has misused European and North American Lactifluus names. In this study, we evaluated the taxonomy of Lactifluus in Korea using both morphological and multilocus molecular (ITS, nrLSU, rpb1, and rpb2) data. We examined 199 Lactifluus specimens collected between 1980 and 2016, and a total of 24 species across the four Lactifluus subgenera were identified. All Korean species are distinct and clearly separated from European and North American species. Five taxa corresponded to previously described species from Asia and the remaining 19 taxa are confirmed as new species. Herein, we provide keys to the Korean Lactifluus species within their subgenera, molecular phylogenies, a summary of diversity, and detailed description of the new species.

Improving interfacial interactions by constructing heterostructures is gaining interest due to its unique structural benefits for ion-reservoir applications. However, great challenges remain. Herein, we propose MoS2 nanorod-based heterostructures covered with a closely interconnected Sn and Mo sulfides/carbon matrix (SMSC@MS-HS) (engraved by a simple water based surface exfoliation strategy) as an efficient anode material for Li/Na–ion storage. Our hierarchical SMSC@MS-HS electrode achieved remarkable discharge capacities of 1,060 and 490 mAh g−1 (after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1) for lithium and sodium-ion batteries, respectively, along with high initial coulombic efficiency and rate capability. This well-constructed architecture provided facile Li+/Na+ ion diffusion and enhanced the charge transfer at the heterointerfaces. Meanwhile, the strong coupling of MoS2 with SnS during water exfoliation in the presence of a carbon matrix created a stable and shielded nanostructure, which significantly enhanced electron/ion transport and mitigated the volume expansion during cycling. These benefits were attributed to a prominent capacitive contribution from kinetics study, improved Li+/Na+ diffusion from galvanostatic intermittent titration measurements, and good structural stability from ex-situ analyses.

Polymeric porous membranes are important in the protective textile industry because of their high breathability balanced with water resistivity. Developing the membranes which display balanced and optimized properties has proven to be a great challenge. Final membrane performance is dependent on fundamental parameters including membrane thickness, aging temperature, and adhesive aging temperature and time. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of these parameters on porous membrane morphology and performance. Using a scanning electron microscope, we analyzed membrane thickness impacts on morphology and pore size. We also investigated physical performance such as water pressure, water vapor permeability, and resistance to evaporating heat transfer (RET). We used the Kawabata evaluation system to evaluate the hand values based on quality according to customer choice. However, good mechanical, physical, and aesthetic performance of laminated textile suggest it as a promising substitute for numerous potential applications, especially as outdoor functional protective clothing.

Penicillium, the most common genus plays an important ecological role in various terrestrial and marine environments. However, only a few species have been reported from rhizosphere soil. As part of a project to excavate Korean indigenous fungi, we investigated rhizosphere soil of six plants in the forest (terrestrial habitat) and sand dunes (coastal habitat) and focused on discovering Penicillium species. A total of 64 strains were isolated and identified as 26 Penicillium species in nine sections based on morphological characteristics and the sequence analysis of β-tubulin and calmodulin. Although this is a small-scale study in a limited rhizosphere soil, eight unrecorded species and four potential new species have been identified. In addition, most Penicillium species from rhizosphere soil were unique to each plant. Penicillium halotolerans, P. scabrosum, P. samsonianum, P. jejuense, and P. janczewskii were commonly isolated from rhizosphere soil. Eight Penicillium species, P. aurantioviolaceum, P. bissettii, P. cairnsense, P. halotolerans, P. kananaskense, P. ortum, P. radiatolobatum, and P. verhagenii were recorded for the first time in Korea. Here, we provide the detailed morphological description of these unrecorded species.

The genus Pholiota (Strophariaceae, Basidiomycota) is made up of wood-rotting saprotrophic mushrooms characterized by a yellow or brown pileus with scales and/or slimy, and by a brownish smooth spore with a germ pore. However, these features are not enough to distinguish its species, or separate the genus Pholiota from other brown-spored wood-rotting genera such as Hypholoma and Stropharia. Although internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence-based identification has improved identification accuracy for species of Pholiota, most Pholiota species in Korea are reported based on morphological features. To evaluate the taxonomy of Pholiota species, we investigated 62 specimens collected from 1999 to 2019 in Korea using ITS sequence analysis and morphological observation. Twelve of the 16 recorded Pholiota species in Korea were identified. While eight species were clearly separated, the ITS analysis did not distinguish three in the Pholiota adiposa complex. Therefore, further investigation is required to distinguish these three species. ITS sequences deposited in GenBank confirm that P. highlandensis exists in Korea. The presence of the other four Pholiota species could not be confirmed through specimens or sequence information in GenBank. A taxonomic key and the ITS sequence data for Korean Pholiota species are included and can be good baselines for further research on Pholiota taxonomy and diversity.

Penicillium in section Exilicaulis is characterized by non-vesiculate monoverticillate and biverticillate stipes. Species in sect. Exilicaulis are commonly found in soil and plants in terrestrial environments; however, only a few species have been reported in Korea. To investigate the diversity of Penicillium sect. Exilicaulis, Penicillium species were isolated from terrestrial and marine environments. Based on sequence analyses of β-tubulin, calmodulin, and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II loci, 19 strains of Penicillium in sect. Exilicaulis were identified as P. citreonigrum, P. citreosulfuratum, P. corylophilum, P. menonorum, P. rubefaciens, P. velutinum, Penicillium sp. 1, and Penicillium sp. 2. Two of them, P. citreonigrum and P. citreosulfuratum, were confirmed to be new to Korea. Molecular phylogenies and detailed descriptions of the two unrecorded species are provided.

Species of Laccaria (Hydnangiaceae, Agaricales, and Basidiomycota) are well-known ectomycorrhizal symbionts of a broad range of hosts. Laccaria species are characterized by brown, orange, or purple colored basidiocarps, and globose or oblong, echinulate and multinucleate basidiospores. While some Laccaria species are easily identified at the species level using only the morphological characteristics, others are hard to distinguish at the species level due to small differences in morphology. Heretofore, ten Laccaria species have been reported in Korea. While studying the fungal diversity in the National Parks of Korea, two new Laccaria species were discovered. Species identification was done based on molecular analyses (ITS, 28S rDNA, rpb2, and tef1), then were confirmed by their corresponding morphologies. The two newly discovered Laccaria species are proposed here as Laccaria macrobasidia and Laccaria griseolilacina. The unique morphological characters of L. macrobasidia that distinguish it from its closely related species are orange-brown colored basidiocarp, long basidia and the absence of cheilocystidia. L. griseolilacina is characterized by a light grayish lavender-colored pileus and the absence of cheilocystidia. Two new species are described and illustrated in the present paper.

Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof) is the most important diseases of a strawberry field in Korea. We surveyed phylogenetic analysis, pathogenicity test, and fungicide response about Fof isolates isolated from Korea. Twenty-seven isolates of F. oxysporum isolated from strawberry plants were conducted in this study. Specific amplification by Fof specific primer was confirmed in all 26 isolates except Fo080701 isolate. The nuclear ribosomal intergenic spacer region and the translation elongation factor EFlα gene sequences of isolates revealed three main lineages. Most of all isolates were contained DNA lineage group 1, but 2 and 3 group was shown only one and three isolates, respectively. All isolates were shown in pathogenicity with cv. Seolhyang. The EC50 mean values of prochloraz ranged 0.02–0.1 μg/ml except for Fo080701 and effectively inhibited mycelial growth at low concentrations. The EC50 value of metconazole was also 0.04–0.22 μg/ml, showing a similar inhibitory effect to that of prochloraz. The EC50 value of pyraclostrobin was 0.23–168.01 μg/ml, which was different according to the strain. In the field trial, boscalid+fludioxonil, fluxapyroxad+pyraclostrobin, and prochloraz manganese were selected as the effective fungicides for controlling Fusarium wilt.

Macrofungi play important roles in forest ecology as wood decayers, symbionts, and pathogens of living trees. For the effective forest management, it is imperative to have a comprehensive overview of macrofungi diversity in specific areas. As a part of the National Institute of Biological Resources projects for discovering indigenous fungi in Korea, we collected macrofungi in Gayasan National Park from 2017 to 2018. These specimens were identified based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) or the nuclear large subunit rRNA (LSU) region. We discovered 17 macrofungi new to Korea: Butyrea japonica, Ceriporia nanlingensis, Coltricia weii, Coltriciella subglobosa, Crepidotus crocophyllus, Cylindrobasidium laeve, Fulvoderma scaurum, Laetiporus cremeiporus, Lentinellus castoreus, Leucogyrophana mollusca, Marasmius insolitus, Nidularia deformis, Phaeophlebiopsis peniophoroides, Phanerochaete angustocystidiata, Phlebiopsis pilatii, Postia coeruleivirens, and Tengioboletus fujianensis. We described their detailed morphological characteristics.

The genus Termitomyces (Lyophyllaceae, Basidiomycota) is often associated with fungus-feeding termites (Macrotermitinae) due to their strong symbiotic relationships. The genus is widely found exclusively in certain regions of Africa and Asia. They are recognized as edible mushroom within Southeast Asia as well. But it is often misidentified based on morphology by the local communities especially in Malaysia for Chlorophyllum molybdites which is a highly poisonous mushroom. Thus, it is necessary to study the genus for Malaysia with the synergy of using both morphological and molecular identification. In this study, we aim to describe another new species as an addition to the genus Termitomyces found within Sabah, Malaysia. We generated two new sequences (nrLSU and mtSSU) for the new species and a total of 28 nrLSU and mtSSU sequences were retrieved from GenBank for the phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences. We identified that the new collection from Sabah province is a new species and named as Termitomyces gilvus based on the termites found in the mound. A phylogeny tree made from the concatenated genes of LSU and mtSSU suggests that T. gilvus is closely related to T. bulborhizus from China. According to our results, the combination of molecular and morphology proved to be a robust approach to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of Termitomyces species in Malaysia. Additional surveys are needed to verify the species diversity and clarify their geographic distribution.

Microbial metabolites have been recognized as an important source for the discovery of new antifungal agents because of their diverse chemical structures with novel modes of action. In the course of our screening for new antifungal agents from microbes, we found that culture filtrates of two fungal species Aspergillus candidus SFC20200425-M11 and Aspergillus montenegroi SFC20200425-M27 have the potentials to reduce the development of fungal plant diseases such as tomato late blight and wheat leaf rust. From these two Aspergillus spp., we isolated a total of seven active compounds, including two new compounds (4 and 6), and identified their chemical structures based on the NMR spectral analyses: sphaeropsidin A (1), (R)-formosusin A (2), (R)-variotin (3), candidusin (4), asperlin (5), montenegrol (6), and protulactone A (7). Based on the results of the in vitro bioassays of 11 plant pathogenic fungi and bacteria, sphaeropsidin A (1), (R)-formosusin A (2), (R)-variotin (3), and asperlin (5) exhibited a wide range of antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, when plants were treated with sphaeropsidin A (1) and (R)-formosusin A (2) at a concentration of 500 μg/ml, sphaeropsidin A (1) exhibited an efficacy disease control value of 96 and 90% compared to non-treated control against tomato late blight and wheat leaf rust, and (R)-formosusin A (2) strongly reduced the development of tomato gray mold by 82%. Asperlin (5) at a concentration of 500 μg/ml effectively controlled the development of tomato late blight and wheat leaf rust with a disease control value of 95%. Given that culture filtrates and active compounds derived from two Aspergillus spp. exhibited disease control efficacies, our results suggest that the Aspergillus-produced antifungal compounds could be useful for the development of new natural fungicides.

In the recent development of electrochemical capacitors, battery-type electrode materials are considered to be promising materials owing to their comparable energy density and the ability to deliver significant power compared to batteries. Herein, we report the applicability of nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) nanostructures as battery-type positive electrodes for the development of supercapatteries. The nickel molybdate nanostructures were synthesized by a facile coprecipitation technique and the structural and electrochemical properties were modified with appropriate heat treatment. The sample heat treated for 500 °C shows good crystallization of the NiMoO4 phase with a partial flower-like nanostructure compared with as-synthesized (bare) and 400 °C heat-treated samples. Moreover, the 500 °C sample-based electrode shows better battery-like electrochemical performances with a maximum specific capacity of 554 C g−1, which is higher compared to the other two electrodes. The supercapattery designed using the 500 °C NiMoO4 sample as the positive electrode and heteroatom enriched biowaste activated carbon as the negative electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performances.
