Parasites can alter the traits or densities of mutualistic partners, potentially destabilizing mutualistic associations that underpin the structure, functioning, and stability of entire ecosystems. Despite the potentially wide‐ranging consequences of such disruptions, no studies have directly manipulated parasite prevalence and/or intensity in a mutualistic partner, nor quantified the resulting community‐level effects. Here, we investigated the effects of a common trematode parasite (Cercaria opaca) on the strength of a keystone facultative mutualism in western Atlantic salt marshes between the foundational marsh cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, and the ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa. Cordgrass increases mussel survivorship and growth through shading, while mussels enhance cordgrass growth by producing nutrient‐rich biodeposits. This mutualistic association also creates conditions that enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and mediates the ability of foundational plants to resist and recover from extreme drought. We used lab and field assays to show how increasing infection with trematode metacercariae negatively influenced mussel biodeposit production, as well as the strength of mussel shells and byssal attachments. By conducting a field manipulation using experimentally infected mussels, we demonstrated that the mutualistic benefits of mussels to cordgrass growth decreased with increasing trematode infection intensity—a pattern likely generated by reduced mussel biodeposition and enhanced mortality. Additionally, increasing parasite loads in mussels led to predictable decreases in the abundances of benthic invertebrates, as well as in key ecosystem characteristics and process rates (i.e., redox potential and sediment accretion). Finally, a survey of five North Carolina salt marshes demonstrated that infection with C. opaca was most common in mussels in areas experiencing cordgrass die‐off due to drought, and that infection intensity decreased with distance from die‐off areas. Because the mussel–cordgrass mutualism underpins marsh ecosystem resilience to drought‐associated die‐off, our results suggest that parasitism may depress recovery from these disturbances. Although this is the first experimental demonstration of parasites indirectly altering community structure and functioning by undermining an ecologically influential mutualism, this type of relationship could be common in nature, given that parasites frequently infect influential mutualists. Bivalve culture is know to affect some interactions between the water column and the benthic environment with the organic enrichment. An in situ mesocosms experiment was used to determine the influence of mussel biodeposition on the benthic ecosystem in St. Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island, eastern Canada. Eight mussel densities (0 to 2266 mussels m-2) were placed above mesocosms to reproduce the organic enrichment from a mussel farm over 12 weeks. The experimental procedure created an accumulation of organic matter on the seafloor with increasing mussel densities. Some benthic parameters had the predicted response to organic enrichment, with the presence of anoxic sediment in sediment profile images, increased water and organic matter content, and reduced infaunal abundance and species richness. Other parameters, including redox potential, total free sulfides, and the response of the biotic index AMBI, had inconsistent responses to mussel biodeposition-related organic enrichment. Given that other studies done in other locations have observed varying results, results suggest that measurement of various parameters is important to interpret the influence of deposition from mussel farms. The conditions of the site and the study duration are also parameters to consider when evaluating the results from mesocosm studies. Carcasses are patchily distributed and often short‐lived resources, placing scavenging animals under pressure to locate them before they rot or are depleted by competitors. Scavengers may search for carcasses directly, or indirectly, using social information. Aggregations of feeding animals and their conspicuous competitive behaviour may be more readily detectable to searching scavengers than the carcass itself. Moreover, the actions of attendant scavengers upon the carcass, breaking it apart and releasing odour or chemical cues, may further enhance its detectability to others foraging nearby. Here we test this idea. In the first of two experiments performed in the field, we found that hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) were attracted to shelled mussels (Mytilus edulis) that other hermit crabs were already feeding on. They showed no strong tendency to approach aggregations of conspecifics in the absence of food, nor conspecifics that were confined close to mussels but prevented from feeding on them. We speculated that through breaking up the carcass, the feeding hermit crabs released chemical cues and drifting particles of mussel tissue that further attracted other hermit crabs. We tested this in a second experiment, finding that finely chopped mussels attracted significantly more hermit crabs than did intact mussels. We suggest that scavenger feeding action upon carcasses makes these more detectable to others by releasing odour and particle plumes, a form of inadvertently produced social information. Marine foundation species underpin some of the world's most diverse ecosystems but they are increasingly threatened by intensification of marine heatwaves (MHWs). Where MHWs exceed critical thermal maxima (CTmax), increased mortality and population declines can occur. CTmax is increasingly used to assess MHW population vulnerability but studies estimating CTmax across species, range edges and thermal histories in a comparable manner remain lacking. We determined the impact of MHWs on subsequent CTmax estimates of matched cool/warm affinity pairs of marine foundation species (kelp, seagrass and bivalves) in the Western English Channel. Following a 4‐week MHW simulation, individuals were subjected to a CTmax trial, where temperatures were raised by 2°C day−1 until physiological end points were reached. We found no positive effect of MHWs on CTmax but clear negative impacts were observed for some groups of foundation species. Increased MHW intensity had a stepwise negative impact on the physiology of both warm (Laminaria ochroleuca) and cool water (L. digitata) kelp species that manifested in significant reductions in CTmax. Surprisingly, this was most marked in the warm water species, which runs opposite to the assumed safety of leading‐edge populations. The physiology of warm (Zostera noltii) and cool (Z. marina) seagrasses was negatively impacted by increasing MHW intensity but no significant decrease in CTmax was observed. Both bivalve species (Mytilus edulis and Magallana gigas) showed marked resistance to exposure to MHWs, which was unexpected given the observed vulnerability of these species to stressful summertime conditions. Our results show pre‐exposure to realistic MHWs can influence CTmax values but generalities are difficult to make across groups or based on assumed thermal safety margins. We show CTmax is a labile trait and exposure to MHWs, can erode the resilience of an individual or population to subsequent thermal challenges. This leaves uncertainty within frameworks built to understand where and when MHWs will be most impactful. Further experimentation across a wider range of species and thermal challenges is needed to better understand the dynamic nature of CTmax and field validation is needed to determine the responses of individuals and populations within complex natural systems. The smooth-shelled blue mussel, Mytilus edulis is part of the Mytilus species complex, encompassing at least three putative species: M. edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis , and Mytilus trossulus. These three species occur on both sides of the Atlantic and hybridize in nature, and both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis are important aquaculture species. They are also invasive species in many parts of the world. Here, we present a chromosome-level assembly of M. edulis. We used a combination of PacBio sequencing and Dovetail's Omni-C technology to generate an assembly with 14 long scaffolds containing 94% of the predicted length of the M. edulis genome (1.6 out of 1.7 Gb). Assembly statistics were as follows: total length = 1.65 Gb, N50 = 116 Mb, L50 = 7, and L90 = 13. BUSCO analysis showed 92.55% eukaryote BUSCOs identified. AB- Initio annotation using RNA-seq from mantle, gills, muscle, and foot predicted 47,128 genes. These gene models were combined with IsoSeq validation resulting in 45,379 full CDS protein sequences and 129,708 isoforms. Using GBS and shotgun sequencing, we also sequenced several eastern Canadian populations of Mytilus to characterize single-nucleotide as well as structural variance. This high-quality genome for M. edulis provides a platform to develop tools that can be used in breeding, molecular ecology and evolution to address questions of both commercial and environmental perspectives. As climate change intensifies heatwaves, quantifying associated mortality within ectothermic populations is crucial for effective conservation. Thermal tolerance landscape (TTL) models are useful predictive tools that assume exponentially decreasing survival durations in individuals with increasing temperatures. This assumption has been validated through regression analyses on data from constant temperature experiments, primarily focusing on adult‐stage individuals. However, this approach does not allow for direct model validation with data from dynamic, real‐world heatwave events and overlooks early recruitment stage vulnerabilities. This study aimed to address these gaps using the blue mussel Mytilus, a foundation species forming extensive reefs along temperate coasts, as a model organism. We monitored survival rates of mussels (juveniles and adults) under constant heatwave (CHW) conditions in a laboratory experiment and under dynamic heatwave (DHW) scenarios simulated in an outdoor mesocosm experiment. Post‐heatwaves, we also assessed recruitment rates within the mesocosms. TTL models were parametrised by employing Approximate Bayesian Computation with Sequential Monte Carlo (ABC‐SMC) on each dataset separately. The parameter distributions were similar across both experiments, and the ABC‐SMC model predictions closely matched the observed survival declines, validating these models. In comparison, we found a lower predictive performance when using a Bayesian regression approach. Additionally, our best‐fit model predicted that warming across the non‐fatal DHW regimes would increase sublethal effects on mussels. The observed impact on the recruitment stage was more pronounced, with the recruitment rate following an exponential decay as sublethal effects increased. Our model projected minor (<4%) sublethal effects in adult mussels during the century's five warmest summer temperature regimes, corresponding to 0%–32% declines in recruitment rates. Our research extends the TTL model validation, demonstrates the resilience of subtidal Baltic Mytilus to future extreme heatwaves and offers an approach to predict heatwave‐induced population mortalities, applicable to other species and sensitive systems. Four species of shellfish, blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), zhikong scallops (Chlamys farreri), and Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), were exposed to decoupled carbonate system variables to investigate the impacts of different seawater carbonate parameters on the CO2 excretion process of mariculture shellfish. Six experimental groups with two levels of seawater pH (pH 8.1 and pH 7.7) and three levels of total alkalinity (TA = 1000, 2300, and 3600 μmol/kg, respectively) were established, while pH 8.1 and TA = 2300 μmol/kg was taken as control. Results showed that the CO2 excretion rates of these tested shellfish were significantly affected by the change in carbonate chemistry (P < 0.05). At the same TA level, animals incubated in the acidified group (pH 7.7) had a lower CO2 excretion rate than those in the control group (pH 8.1). In comparison, at the same pH level, the CO2 excretion rate increased when seawater TA level was elevated. No significant correlation between the CO2 excretion rate and seawater pCO2 levels (P > 0.05) was found; however, a significant correlation (P < 0.05) between CO2 excretion rate and TA-DIC (the difference between total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon) was observed. Blue mussel has a significantly higher CO2 excretion rate than the other three species in the CO2 excretions per unit mass of soft parts, with no significant difference observed among these three species. However, in terms of CO2 excretion rate per unit mass of gills, abalone has the highest CO2 excretion rate, while significant differences were found between each species. Our studies indicate that the CO2 buffering capacity impacts the CO2 excretion rate of four shellfish species largely independent of pCO2. Since CO2 excretion is related to acid–base balancing, the results imply that the effects of other carbonate parameters, particularly the CO2 buffering capacity, should be studied to fully understand the mechanism of how acidification affects shellfish. Consuming poisoned shellfish can lead to severe health problems and even death. Alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in Korea, and PSP is detected more in a wider area. However, the association between toxic dinoflagellates and shellfish poisoning is unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the toxicity, detoxification, and compositional differences in PSP in Mytilus edulis exposed to PSP caused by A. catenella and A. pacificum. High-performance liquid chromatography with post-column oxidation was used to analyze PSP toxicity in poisoned M. edulis. PSP in M. edulis increased as the A. catenella and A. pacificum cell density increased. However, the cell density of A. catenella peaked faster than that of A. pacificum, and a high level of toxicity was detected. In the detoxification experiment, PSP in M. edulis decreased rapidly within 24 h in filtered seawater. However, PSP was continuously detected without decreasing below the detection limit until the last day of the experiment. In addition, the carbamate composition (GTX1+4) was detected as the main toxic composition in poisoned M. edulis, unlike in vegetative cells. GTX1+4 can poison shellfish quickly when toxic dinoflagellates appear in the marine environment. However, poisoned shellfish take a long time to be completely detoxified. Moreover, if shellfish continuously feed on poisonous dinoflagellates, their toxicity can increase rapidly due to biotransformation. Metabolic rate is a crucial trait shaping organismal physiology, adaptability, and ecological roles, with extensive studies on its allometric relationship with body size. Larger organisms have lower mass-specific metabolic rates, a pattern observed across taxa and ontogeny. Despite numerous hypotheses, no universally accepted theory exists on the biological mechanisms of metabolic allometry, particularly for suborganism-level. We investigated the relationship between body size and metabolic rate as well as mitochondrial characteristics in isolated gill tissue of the marine mussel Mytilus edulis. Results indicated that metabolic allometry patterns observed at the organismal level did not manifest at the tissue level. Our study also revealed that while the density of mitochondria in gill tissue did not differ significantly between large and small individuals, area and perimeter of mitochondrial cross-sections increased significantly with body mass. This finding contrasts with mammalian data, suggesting potential phylogenetic differences. Larger mussels exhibited higher mitochondrial activity, supporting a link between mitochondrial morphology, activity, and growth rates. Our results highlight the importance of mitochondria in mollusk metabolism and growth, warranting further exploration into the mechanisms translating mitochondrial characteristics into growth rates. In recent decades, mussel beds in the northern Atlantic and Scandinavia have declined rapidly in extent due to anthropogenic impacts, similar to many other marine habitats. In this study, a large‐scale restoration experiment was conducted to identify major challenges that arise during restoration efforts on shallow subtidal mussel beds. Suspension‐grown mussels (Mytilus edulis) were relayed in two different treatments either directly on bare bottom sandy sediments, or on coir nets (Net), used as a proxy for suitable byssal attachment substrate. The treatments were monitored for 1.5 years and coverage (%), biomass (WW), and population dynamics were quantified. Two main challenges of shallow bed restoration were identified: (1) Lack of suitable attachment substrate resulting in dislodgment of individuals during storm events. The Net treatment had significantly higher coverage and biomass of Mytilus at the end of the monitoring period, clearly demonstrating the importance of suitable substrate at physically exposed locations. (2) High mortality of juvenile mussels. Population dynamics revealed a high mortality of juvenile Mytilus, which resulted in almost complete loss of relayed Mytilus individuals less than 30 mm within the first season. This was most likely due to high meso‐predator densities, as a result of declining top‐predator populations. The high mortality of juvenile Mytilus prevented successful annual recruitment, thereby making the population unsustainable long‐term. Both challenges need to be addressed to create stable beds during restoration. The blue mussels Mytilus edulis and Mytilus trossulus are ecologically and economically important species distributed widely across the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding their behavioral and physiological disparities is crucial for assessing their ecological success and aquacultural value. The recent finding of non-native M. trossulus in the White Sea raises concerns regarding its potential competition with native M. edulis and its prospective spread in light of climate change and surface water freshening. We investigated the responses of M. edulis and M. trossulus to salinity variations by examining shell closure thresholds and tissue levels of 35 metabolic intermediates in mussels acclimated to different salinities (25, 16, and 10). The salinity threshold for valve closure was similar in both studied species, but M. trossulus consistently opened at lower salinities (by 0.2-0.7 practical salinity units) compared to M. edulis. Salinity-induced changes in metabolite levels were similar between the two species. Taurine emerged as the dominant osmolyte, comprising over 50% of the total free amino acid pool, with aspartate and glycine contributing 15-30%. Concentrations of taurine, glycine, and total free amino acids declined with decreasing salinity. Taurine to glycine ratios were higher in M. edulis and increased in both species with declining salinity. Acclimation salinity significantly influenced urea cycle intermediates and methionine sulfoxide content, a cellular biomarker of amino acid oxidation. Species-specific differences were observed in purine metabolism, with higher levels of GMP and AMP found in M. edulis. Likewise, aromatic amino acids and histidine levels were higher in M. edulis compared to M. trossulus. However, no evidence suggests superior adaptation of M. trossulus metabolism to hypoosmotic stress compared to M. edulis. Further research is necessary to elucidate the functional implications of subtle metabolic differences between these Mytilus congeners and their ecological consequences in changing marine environments. Climate change may exacerbate the impact of invasive parasites from warmer climates through pre‐existing temperature adaptations. We investigated temperature impacts on two closely related marine parasitic copepod species that share the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) as host: Mytilicola orientalis has invaded the system from a warmer climate <20 years ago, whereas its established congener Mytilicola intestinalis has had >90 years to adapt. In laboratory experiments with temperatures 10–26°C, covering current and future temperatures as well as heat waves, the development of both life cycle stages of both species accelerated with increasing temperature. In the parasitic stages, the growth of the established invader increased evenly from 10°C to 22°C, whereas the recent invader barely grew at all at 10°C and grew faster already at 18°C. In contrast, temperature had little effect on the transition success between life cycle stages. However, the highest temperature (26°C) limited the egg development success of the established invader and the host entry success of both species, whereas the infection success of the established invader increased at 18°C and 22°C. In general, our experiments indicate that the main effect of temperature on both species is through development speed and not life cycle stage transition success. Based on regional long‐term temperature data and predictions, the numbers of completed life cycles per year will increase for both parasites. The established invader seems better adapted for low current temperatures (around 10°C), whereas the more recent invader barely develops at these temperatures but can cope in high temperatures (around 26°C). To understand the seasonality of spermatogenesis in cultured males of Mytilus edulis from a cold‐ocean environment, we investigated the cellular transitions occurring within the spermatogenic epithelium of the testicular acini during early and advancing spermatogenesis, with specific reference to the histology of the epithelium, gene specific spermatogenic response, condition, culture environment, and season. A combination of histological evaluation, qPCR analysis, and in situ hybridization was used to examine the cellular transitions taking place in the germinal epithelium from late winter through to a seasonal spawn in summer. We observed clear seasonal transitionary changes in the spermatogenic cell population making up the germinal epithelium (i.e., spermatogonial stem cells, spermatocytes, spermatids, and spermatozoa) extending from February to July. These seasonal transitions in spermatogenic cell type coincided with significant variation in the spatiotemporal expression of two molecular markers for spermatogenesis (i.e., Kelch‐like protein 10 [KLHL10] and Armadillo repeat‐containing protein 4 isoform X2 [ARMC4]) but not for expression of a gamete‐specific Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (MT‐COI). The spatiotemporal expression of these genes is directly linked to the cellular changes taking place in the germinal epithelium during spermatogenesis. These observations not only corresponded to seasonal changes in physiological condition but also environmental temperature and chlorophyll a, thus further supporting the link between male gametogenesis and environment in higher latitude regions. The increase in hypoxia events, a result of climate change in coastal and fjord ecosystems, impacts the health and survival of mussels. These organisms deploy physiological and molecular responses as an adaptive mechanism to maintain cellular homeostasis under environmental stress. However, the specific effects of hypoxia on mussels of socioeconomic interest, such as Mytilus chilensis, are unknown. Using RNA-seq, we investigated the transcriptomic profiles of the gills, digestive gland, and adductor muscle of M. chilensis under hypoxia (10 days at 2 mg L−1) and reoxygenation (10 days at 6 mg L−1). There were 15,056 differentially expressed transcripts identified in gills, 11,864 in the digestive gland, and 9862 in the adductor muscle. The response varied among tissues, showing chromosomal changes in Chr1, Chr9, and Chr10 during hypoxia. Hypoxia regulated signaling genes in the Toll-like, mTOR, citrate cycle, and apoptosis pathways in gills, indicating metabolic and immunological alterations. These changes suggest that hypoxia induced a metabolic shift in mussels, reducing reliance on aerobic respiration and increasing reliance on anaerobic metabolism. Furthermore, hypoxia appeared to suppress the immune response, potentially increasing disease susceptibility, with negative implications for the mussel culture industry and natural bed populations. Quantifying the response of marine mussel plaque attachment to wet surfaces remains a significant challenge to a mechanistic understanding of plaque adhesion. Here, we develop a novel, customized microscope system, combined with two-dimensional in situ digital image correlation (DIC), to quantify the in-plane deformation of a deformable substrate that interacts with a mussel plaque under directional tension. By examining the strain field within the substrate, we acquired an understanding of the mechanism by which in-plane traction forces are transmitted from the mussel plaque to the underlying substrate. Finite-element (FE) models were developed to assist in the interpretation of the experimental measurement. Our study revealed a synergistic effect of pulling angle and substrate stiffness on plaque detachment, with mussel plaques anchoring to a 'stiff' substrate at small pulling angles, i.e. natural anchoring angles, having mechanical advantages with higher load-bearing capacity and less plaque deformation. We identify two distinct failure modes, i.e. shear-traction-governed failure (STGF) and normal-traction-governed failure (NTGF). It was found that increasing the stiffness of the substrate or reducing the pulling angle results in a change of the failure mode from NTGF to STGF. Our findings offer new insights into the mechanistic understanding of mussel plaque–substrate interaction, providing a plaque-inspired strategy to develop high-performance and artificial wet adhesion. In the Wadden Sea, intertidal mussel beds of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) form distinct epibenthic communities and local hotspots of high biomass and biodiversity. To detect and evaluate natural and anthropogenic processes, a ground-based monitoring program started over 25 years ago in the German Wadden Sea. In this study, we describe the potential of drones and machine learning approaches for a remote sensing-based integration into an existing monitoring program of intertidal mussel beds. A fixed wing drone was used to cover an area of up to 39ha in a single flight, with an overall time saving potential of 50%. Applying machine learning approaches, a detailed extraction of the intertidal blue mussel bed coverage with an overall accuracy (OA) up to 95.6% was reached, applying a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The application of a multispectral sensor improved the classification performance. Compared to ground-based monitoring, the drone-based method provided significantly more information on the area extension, coverage, and associated algae of the mussel beds. The results show that drones can provide a non-invasive way to survey large and difficult to access areas providing detailed maps of mussel beds and their internal structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of functional dispersal barriers in the marine environment can be used to inform a wide variety of management actions, such as marine spatial planning, restoration efforts, fisheries regulations, and invasive species management. Locations and causes of dispersal barriers can be studied through various methods, including movement tracking, biophysical modeling, demographic models, and genetics. Combining methods illustrating potential dispersal, such as biophysical modeling, with realized dispersal through, e.g., genetic connectivity estimates, provides particularly useful information for teasing apart potential causes of observed barriers. In this study, we focus on blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) in the Skagerrak—a marginal sea connected to the North Sea in Northern Europe—and combine biophysical models of larval dispersal with genomic data to infer locations and causes of dispersal barriers in the area. Results from both methods agree; patterns of ocean currents are a major structuring factor in the area. We find a complex pattern of source‐sink dynamics with several dispersal barriers and show that some areas can be isolated despite an overall high dispersal capability. Microplastics (MPs) pollution has wreaked havoc on biodiversity and food safety globally. The false ingestion of MPs causes harmful effects on organisms, resulting in a decline in biodiversity. The present review comprehended the current knowledge of MP contamination in Crustacea and Mollusca from 75 peer‐reviewed articles published in Asia between 2015 and 2023. A total of 79 species (27 Crustacea and 52 Mollusca) have been recorded to be contaminated with MPs. Out of the total 27 species of Crustacea, Metopograpsus quadridentatus (327.56 MPs/individual) and Balanus albicostatus (0.42 MPs/individual) showed the highest and lowest contamination, respectively. Out of the total 52 species of Mollusca, Dolabella auricularia (2325 MPs/individual) and Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus edulis (0.2 MPs/individual) showed the highest and lowest contamination, respectively. In terms of country‐wise MP contamination, China has the highest number of contaminated species in both phylums among Asia. Findings of pollution indices revealed a very high risk of MP contamination in all the countries. Fiber was reported predominantly in both groups. Blue and black‐colored MPs having <500 μm and <500 μm–1 mm size were found dominantly in Crustacea and Mollusca, respectively. Polypropylene was recorded as the dominant plastic polymer in both Crustacea and Mollusca. In essence, this review has provided a comprehensive insight into MP concentration in Crustacea and Mollusca of Asia, highlighting variations among species and geographic locations. This understanding is crucial for tackling urgent environmental challenges, safeguarding human health, and promoting global sustainability initiatives amid the escalating issue of plastic pollution. Background: Disseminated neoplasia (DN) is a proliferative cell disorder of the circulatory system of bivalve mollusks. The disease is transmitted between individuals and can also be induced by external chemical agents such as bromodeoxyuridine. In Mya arenaria, we have cloned and characterized an LTR-retrotransposon named Steamer. Steamer mRNA levels and gene copy number correlates with DN and can be used as a marker of the disease. So far, the only mollusk where a retrotransposon expression relates to DN is Mya arenaria. On the other hand, it has been reported that the Chilean blue mussel Mytilus chilensis can also suffers DN. Our aim was to identify retrotransposons in Mytilus chilensis and to study their expression levels in the context of disseminated neoplasia. Results: Here we show that 7.1% of individuals collected in August 2018, from two farming areas, presents morphological characteristics described in DN. Using Steamer sequence to interrogate the transcriptome of M. chilensis we found two putative retrotransposons, named Steamer-like elements (MchSLEs). MchSLEs are present in the genome of M. chilensis and MchSLE1 is indeed an LTR-retrotransposon. Neither expression, nor copy number of the reported MchSLEs correlate with DN status but both are expressed at different levels among individual animals. We also report that in cultured M. chilensis haemocytes MchSLEs1 expression can be induced by bromodeoxyuridine. Conclusions: We conclude that SLEs present in Mytilus chilensis are differentially expressed among individuals and do not correlate with disseminated neoplasia. Treatment of haemocytes with a stressor like bromodeoxyuridine induces expression of MchSLE1 suggesting that in Mytilus chilensis environmental stressors can induce activation of LTR-retrotransposon. Foundation species that modify their habitat can facilitate other species, including other foundation species. Most studies focus solely on a single foundation species, overlooking such facilitation cascades. In this study, we investigated the interactions between the two coastal foundation species Mytilus edulis (blue mussel) and Lanice conchilega (sand mason worm). We investigated whether these species engage in facilitative interactions or if their association simply reflects a shared ecological niche on the soft-sediment intertidal flats of the Dutch Wadden Sea. To do so, we performed species distribution modeling, manipulative field experiments, and field surveys. We found a positive association between both foundation species, with a 2.45 times higher occurrence of both species compared to a random distribution. In addition, these species partially occupied the same ecological niche. We demonstrated that L. conchilega provided settlement substrate for M. edulis spat, increasing densities by 400 times compared to bare plots. Furthermore, M. edulis reefs facilitated L. conchilega occurrence in the wake of the reef. Biogenic reef development revealed that this interspecific facilitation resulted in spatial habitat heterogeneity. Therefore, we conclude that interspecific facilitation can significantly enhance the occurrence of these two important intertidal foundation species. Mytilus edulis is a commercially and ecologically important species found along the east coast of the United States. Ecologically, M. edulis improves water quality through filtration feeding and provides habitat formation and coastal protection through reef formation. Like many marine calcifiers, ocean warming, and acidification are a growing threat to these organisms—impacting their morphology and function. Museum collections are useful in assessing long-term environmental impacts on organisms in a natural multi-stressor environment, where acclimation and adaptation can be considered. Using the American Museum of Natural History collections ranging from the early 1900s until now, we show that shell porosity changes through time. Shells collected today are significantly more porous than shells collected in the 1960s and, at some sites, than shells collected from the early 1900s. The disparity between porosity changes matches well with the warming that occurred over the last 130 years in the north Atlantic suggesting that warming is causing porosity changes. However, more work is required to discern local environmental impacts and to fully identify porosity drivers. Since, porosity is known to affect structural integrity, porosity increasing through time could have negative consequences for mussel reef structural integrity and hence habitat formation and storm defenses. Opportunistic pathogens have been associated with yield-limiting factors in bivalve hatcheries. Numerous natural compounds are being investigated for their beneficial effects and potential to enhance larval resistance without requiring antibiotics. One of those is the use of marennine, a blue pigment, originating from the diatom Haslea ostrearia, which has demonstrated a positive effect on larvae survival. The aim of this study was to highlight the protective effect of marennine on Mytilus edulis larvae during bacterial challenges in relation to a potential modification of the marennine-treated larvae microbiota. D-larvae and post-larvae were exposed for 96 h to Vibrio splendidus (106 cell mL−1) with and without mareninne (500 µg L−1). The presence of marennine increased the survival rate of D-larvae exposed to the pathogen. The molecular analysis of the larvae microbiota diversity indicated a modification in the D-larval microbiota's richness related to survival rates of larvae. The ionic properties of strontium (Sr), a significant artificial radionuclide in the marine environment, were estimated using a stable nuclide-substituting experimental system under controlled laboratory conditions. The bio-accumulation of Sr and its impacts, as well as any possible hidden mechanisms, were evaluated based on the physiological alterations of the sentinel blue mussel Mytilus edulis. The mussels were exposed to a series of stress-inducing concentrations, with the highest solubility being 0.2 g/L. No acute lethality was observed during the experiment, but sublethal damage was evident. Sr accumulated in a tissue-specific way, and hemolymph was the target, with the highest accumulating concentration being 64.46 µg/g wet weight (ww). At the molecular level, increases in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and changes in ROS components (H2O2, O2−, and -OH) and antioxidant system activity indicated that the redox equilibrium state in hemocytes was disturbed. Furthermore, the rise in the hemocyte micronucleus (MN) rate (4‰ in the high-concentration group) implied DNA damage. At the cellular level, the structures of hemocytes were damaged, especially with respect to lysosomes, which play a crucial role in phagocytosis. Lysosomal membrane stability (LMS) was also affected, and both acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activities were reduced, resulting in a significant decline in phagocytosis. The hemolymph population structure at the organ level was disturbed, with large changes in hemocyte number and mortality rate, along with changes in component ratios. These toxic effects were evaluated by employing the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework. The increase in hard artificial structures in the marine environment is contributing to ocean sprawl. As well as adding hard structure to the seabed, mussel aquaculture adds rope droppers and anchor lines to the water column, where such structure would otherwise be absent. This paper aims to monitor the effects of mussel headlines on the pelagic fish community over time, as well as to investigate whether there is an interaction between the age of cultivated mussels with the number of epibiota species and the abundance of pelagic fishes. Two surveys were carried out: a time series monitoring survey to assess whether the mussel headlines change the surrounding fish species relative to control areas over time, and a fish aggregation device effect survey to investigate whether older and larger mussels support greater abundances of pelagic fishes and epibiota. The most abundant fish species was Atlantic horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus, with significantly greater numbers recorded around ropes growing older mussels. Results from the surveys show that the physical farm infrastructure has provided a substrate for colonisation by a variety of epibiota: A total of 21 species were recorded growing on the mussel ropes. Furthermore, the older and larger the mussels become, the greater the numbers of epibiota taxa that can colonise, coupled with a greater abundance of pelagic fish recorded around the ropes. The sustainable development of offshore Blue Industries is essential to produce renewable resources. This study brings essential evidence for marine managers and regulators that offshore mussel farming can provide benefits for pelagic and benthic species of both conservation and commercial importance while producing sustainable protein to feed a growing population. Blastocystis sp. is the most common single-celled eukaryote colonizing the human gastrointestinal tract worldwide. Because of the proven zoonotic potential of this protozoan, sustained research is therefore focused on identifying various reservoirs of transmission to humans, and in particular animal sources. Numerous groups of animals are considered to be such reservoirs due to their handling or consumption. However, some of them, including mollusks, remain underexplored. Therefore, a molecular epidemiological survey conducted in wild mussels was carried out in Northern France (Hauts-de-France region) to evaluate the frequency and subtypes (STs) distribution of Blastocystis sp. in these bivalve mollusks. For this purpose, 100 mussels (Mytilus edulis) were randomly collected in two sampling sites (Wimereux and Dannes) located in the vicinity of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The gills and gastrointestinal tract of each mussel were screened for the presence of Blastocystis sp. by real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay followed by direct sequencing of positive PCR products and subtyping through phylogenetic analysis. In parallel, sequences of potential representative Blastocystis sp. isolates that were previously obtained from temporal surveys of seawater samples at marine stations offshore of Wimereux were integrated in the present analysis. By taking into account the qPCR results from all mussels, the overall prevalence of the parasite was shown to reach 62.0%. In total, more than 55% of the positive samples presented mixed infections. In the remaining mussel samples with a single sequence, various STs including ST3, ST7, ST14, ST23, ST26 and ST44 were reported with varying frequencies. Such distribution of STs coupled with the absence of a predominant ST specific to these bivalves strongly suggested that mussels might not be natural hosts of Blastocystis sp. and might rather be carriers of parasite isolates from both human and animal (bovid and birds) waste. These data from mussels together with the molecular identification of isolates from marine stations were subsequently discussed along with the local geographical context in order to clarify the circulation of this protozoan in this area. The identification of human and animal STs of Blastocystis sp. in mussels emphasized the active circulation of this protozoan in mollusks and suggested a significant environmental contamination of fecal origin. This study has provided new insights into the host/carrier range and transmission of Blastocystis sp. and emphasized its potential as an effective sentinel species for water quality and environmental contamination. This review provides an overview of 15 years of munitions research by the Institute of Toxicology and Pharmacology for Natural Scientists, University Medical School Schleswig‐Holstein, Kiel, Germany. As early as 2009, it was possible to detect the TNT metabolite 4‐ADNT in a quantity of 250 ng/g (wet weight) in blue mussels collected directly on munition items in the Kolberger Heide dumping area (Bight of Kiel, Baltic Sea, Germany). Based on these results, biomonitoring with blue mussels was established, in which uncontaminated mussels were exposed at certain distances from munition items and then retrieved after a few weeks in order to then be analyzed in the laboratory for energetic compounds (EC) including TNT and metabolites thereof. In following studies – in addition to mussels – also fish, sediments, water samples and passive samplers from specific locations were examined for the presence of EC. The study areas included dumping site regions from both the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, and were then extended to appropriate shipwrecks in the North Sea. The field studies were completed with laboratory investigations, which dealt with the development of a molecular biomarker as a kind of "early warning system" and with aspects of microbial degradation of EC. Finally, risk assessments for the marine environment and the human seafood consumer were carried out. A five-day in situ experiment was conducted in plastic enclosures to investigate the effects of different densities of the mussel Mytilus edulis, and sampling time on water variables, and phytoplankton community structure in Sanggou Bay (Shandong, China). The tested mussel densities were low (LD300: 300 g/m3), medium (MD600: 600 g/m3), high (HD900: 900 g/m3), and sampling times were at 6:00 and 17:00 h. Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer a promising path to enhance climate-resilient shorelines. For instance, the creation of mussel beds in subtidal sandy shore systems provides a versatile strategy for coastal management, reinforcing coastal defense and fostering biodiversity, ultimately strengthening the resilience and well-being of coastal communities. This study analysed the changes in seabed dynamics and surrounding benthic communities as a result of the formation of mussel beds (Mytilus edulis) using an aquaculture longline system. Therefore, a comprehensive monitoring approach at two sites characterized by distinct hydrodynamic conditions was applied over a three-year period. To assess the effects, a before/after control/impact design (BACI) was employed. Seabed dynamics were evaluated by observing mussel bed persistence, erosion/deposition, and sediment composition. The influence on the benthic community included assessments of community structure and biodiversity. Finally, the impact of mussels, hydrodynamic conditions, and their interactions on seabed dynamics and benthic communities was examined using linear mixed models (LMMs). Factors such as mussel presence, Lanice conchilega abundance, shell cover, and sediment composition played a role in shaping the distinct characteristics observed between two different sites: a site that lies at a location that is more sheltered from hydrodynamic conditions, and a second site that is exposed to higher current and wave conditions. The sheltered site exhibited higher species density, richness, biomass, and diversity compared to the exposed site. In relation to the mussel bed development, mussel patches were found at both sites (with higher occurrence at the sheltered site) in the 2nd and 3rd years (mainly in summer towards early winter). The influence of mussels on sediment deposition was noticeable at the sheltered site, albeit lacking statistical significance, suggesting their potential role in erosion/deposition mechanisms. Also, a higher proportion of very fine sand was observed in the mussel bed compared to the bare sand. However, due to the absence of higher-density permanent mussel beds and irregular sedimentation/erosion patterns throughout the study period, no significant effect of the mussel beds on the community structure or diversity was found. In order to achieve a sustained and dense mussel bed and maximize the potential impact of mussels in combating climate change (e.g., shore protection and biodiversity enrichment), additional measures to increase coastal resilience against harsh hydrodynamic conditions may be necessary.

Simple Summary: The genetic pool of invasive species greatly influences their ability to establish and spread. The blue mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, originating from the Mediterranean, are major invaders worldwide. Our study examined their genetic diversity and structure in Chile, comparing them with native populations. We used mitochondrial DNA to analyze the genetic traits and origins of invasive populations. Two lineages of M. galloprovincialis were identified, i.e., NW Atlantic and Mediterranean. Although recently introduced, no genetic structure was found in Chilean populations. However, a mixture of lineages increased the genetic diversity along the coast. The invasion coastal extent remains small (~100 km), suggesting their recent introduction. The expansion of these populations may encounter natural barriers; nevertheless, it is advisable to monitor these species' distribution. The genetic characteristics of invasive species have a significant impact on their ability to establish and spread. The blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), native to the Mediterranean Sea, is a leading invasive species of intertidal coasts throughout much of the world. Here, we used mitochondrial DNA sequence data to investigate the genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure of invasive (M. galloprovincialis) versus native (Mytilus chilensis) populations of blue mussels in Chile. We evaluated whether genetic diversity in invasive populations could be explained by the genetic characteristics of the native sources from which they might be derived. A phylogenetic analysis confirmed two lineages of the invasive M. galloprovincialis, i.e., the NW Atlantic and the Mediterranean lineages. We found no evidence of genetic structure in the invasive range of M. galloprovincialis in Chile, most probably because of its recent arrival. We did, however, detect a spatial mixture of both M. galloprovincialis lineages at sampling locations along the Chilean coast, giving rise to higher levels of genetic diversity in some areas compared to the population of native M. chilensis. The coastal area of the invasion is still small in extent (~100 km on either side of two large ports), which supports the hypothesis of a recent introduction. Further expansion of the distribution range of M. galloprovincialis may be limited to the north by increasing water temperatures and to the south by a natural biogeographic break that may slow or perhaps stop its spread. We investigated trophic transfer of cadmium (Cd) through an Arctic marine food web in Hudson Bay and compared it with mercury (Hg), a metal known to strongly biomagnify. We evaluated blue mussel, sea urchin, common eider, sculpin, Arctic cod, and ringed seal for the influence of dietary and biological variables on variation in Cd and Hg concentrations. Age and size influenced metal concentrations among individuals within a vertebrate species. Consumer carbon and sulfur isotope values were correlated with their Cd and Hg concentrations, indicating habitat-specific feeding influenced metal bioaccumulation. Trophic transfer patterns for Cd depended on the vertebrate tissue, with food web biodilution observed for the muscle but not the liver. Liver Cd concentrations were higher in ringed seal and some common eider relative to prey. In contrast, we observed mercury biomagnification for both tissues. Hybridization among related species is now recognized as common but it remains unclear how hybrid zones persist for prolonged periods. Here, we test the hypothesis that selection in different components of the life cycle may stabilize a hybrid zone. A hybrid zone occurs in southwest England between the marine mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Previous studies have found strong directional selection against alleles from M. edulis occurs among hybrids in the adult stage. Traditional hybrid zone models argue that alleles that are selected within the hybrid zone are replaced by migration from neighboring parental population into the hybrid zone. In this system, however, migration occurs out of this hybrid zone into neighboring parental populations. This hybrid zone should therefore be unstable and dissipate, yet this zone has persisted for more than 30 years. We tested and rejected the hypothesis that differences in fecundity may select for M. edulis alleles within this hybrid zone and thus counter the selection observed against these alleles among adults. We also tested the hypothesis that selection during the larval stage may counter selection against M. edulis alleles in the adult stage. We found that selection favors M. edulis alleles during the veliger stage of larval development. The direction and strength of selection during the larval stage are sufficient to counter strong selection during the adult portion of the life cycle. LTR-retrotransposons are transposable elements characterized by the presence of long terminal repeats (LTRs) directly flanking an internal coding region. They share genome organization and replication strategies with retroviruses. Steamer-like Element-1 (MchSLE-1) is an LTR-retrotransposon identified in the genome of the Chilean blue mussel Mytilus chilensis. MchSLE-1 is transcribed; however, whether its RNA is also translated and the mechanism underlying such translation remain to be elucidated. Here, we characterize the MchSLE-1 translation mechanism. We found that the MchSLE-1 5′ and 3′LTRs command transcription of sense and antisense RNAs, respectively. Using luciferase reporters commanded by the untranslated regions (UTRs) of MchSLE-1, we found that in vitro 5′UTR sense is unable to initiate translation, whereas the antisense 5′UTR initiates translation even when the eIF4E-eIF4G interaction was disrupted, suggesting the presence of an internal ribosomal entry site (IRES). The antisense 5′UTR IRES activity was tested using bicistronic reporters. The antisense 5′UTR has IRES activity only when the mRNA is transcribed in the nucleus, suggesting that nuclear RNA-binding proteins are required to modulate its activity. Indeed, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNPK) was identified as an IRES trans-acting factor (ITAF) of the MchSLE-1 IRES. Australian blue mussels (Mytilus spp.) are an increasingly important sustainable product of the Australian aquaculture industry. Although important for commercial fisheries, aquaculture may have adverse environmental and ecological impacts. This study assessed the impact of standard hatchery-imposed selection practices on the genetic diversity of farmed blue mussels. Using microsatellite markers, relatedness and genetic structure analyses showed that hatchery-reared larvae have high levels of genetic diversity without a significant decline as they move through the hatchery rearing process. Selection and/or genetic drift does appear to be operating during the hatchery rearing process, however, evidenced by an increase in relatedness among larvae over time. Significant shifts in allele frequency as well as genetic clusters provides further evidence that selection is acting on larvae due to the selection practice applied at the hatchery. Comparison of the level of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of adults from wild and farmed populations provided no evidence that farmed mussels have lower diversity, or that they are genetically swamping local natural populations. The data suggest that careful design and implementation of mussel breeding programs can maintain high genetic diversity among larvae that does not lead to genetic swamping of natural mussel populations in the surrounding area. Transplantations of organisms in aquatic ecosystems play an important role in ecological restoration and commercial practices. However, success rates of these transplantations, especially when ecosystem engineers are involved, are often low. To enhance transplantation success, the promotion of self‐facilitation between transplants that mitigate environmental stressors is crucial. Besides, spatial patterns resulting from self‐facilitation can enhance ecosystem resilience. Using blue mussels as a model organism, we explored the possibility of increasing transplantation success in a subtidal ecosystem. We used biodegradable structures ("BioShell‐SMCs") to ameliorate self‐facilitating feedback mechanisms to overcome environmental stressors in the initial post‐transplantation phase, and to increase transplantation success by implementing large‐scale spatial configurations, mimicking natural mussel bed patterns. The structures are an innovation of traditional seed mussel collectors (SMCs) used in mussel cultivation. They consist of a biodegradable net based on a compound of aliphatic polyesters, filled with empty cockle shells around a coconut fiber rope. We tested whether different spatial configurations could increase transplantation success of mussel seed: low versus high density labyrinth pattern and banded pattern. The results of this experiment showed high losses (approximately 75%), with no significant variation between configurations. The lack of migration due to unexpected retention of the biodegradable net hindered the initiation of natural aggregations, resulting in increased competition among mussels. Besides, factors such as hydrodynamic dislodgement, burial and interannual variation likely contributed to the observed losses. While the BioShell‐SMC has not demonstrated large‐scale success, this research contributes to understanding the mechanisms that underlie successful transplantation strategies in aquatic ecosystems. Nature-based solutions, such as shellfish reefs, can support natural coastal defence and be a potential solution for climate-resilient shorelines in the future. In the Belgian Part of the North Sea, the "Coastbusters" projects aim to develop nature-based coastal protection by favouring subtidal mussel bed establishment on the seafloor through typical longline aquaculture techniques. Mussel beds are dependent on environmental conditions, and both influence the physical and biogeochemical features in a soft-sediment environment. Therefore, a comprehensive ecological monitoring program is essential to assess the success of future mussel bed development and its influence on the surrounding ecosystem. For establishing a monitoring baseline of the two experimental areas, a combination of conventional benthic assessment methods (grab sampling and granulometry) and non-invasive techniques (sediment profile imaging and transect diving video surveys) were utilised. Although mussel reefs did not yet develop by the time of this study, clear differences in ecological and sedimentological characteristics were found between two experimental areas (sheltered and exposed), subjected to slightly different hydrodynamic conditions. The one sheltered by coastal sandbanks was dominated by fine-muddy sand, higher species richness, biomass, and higher biological activity (burrows, fauna, and biological beds) as observed by all methods in one or another way. Moreover, functional diversity indices revealed a higher partitioning of the total available resources, suggesting more complex ecological processes in the sheltered area. Conversely, the area more exposed to the open sea was dominated by more sandy sediments, and fewer organisms were found. The combination of those different monitoring tools provides an integrated, complementary view, from different perspectives, on the biological, physical and functional characteristics of the study areas. Blue mussels Mytilus have returned to the high Arctic region of Svalbard in the beginning of twenty-first century after being absent for almost a 1000 years. Not only M. edulis had arrived in Svalbard, but also a complex of sympatric species including M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis, M. trossulus, and some of their hybrids, which may have a wide range of origins from both sides of the North Atlantic. Mussels were first found in the sublittoral at the entrance to Isfjorden, west coast of Spitsbergen island, and are spreading in other areas, and recently were also found in the intertidal zone. Here, we report viable larvae that were recovered from within the mantle cavity of mussels from the lower intertidal shore collected in late July 2019 and 2021 in Trygghamna, Isfjorden. The identity of larval and adult mussels was confirmed by sequencing of barcode region. Larvae ranged in size from 178 to 376 µm, from mussels 21 to 57 mm in shell length, and estimated to range over 3 to 12 years. The endocrine disruptive chemical DEHP is a plasticiser often found in marine waters. Here, we assessed the effect of this additive on the number and size of eggs spawned by female mussels during a synchronised spawning event. After achieving the ripeness of the gonads, mussels of both sexes were exposed to two environmentally relevant concentrations of DEHP (nominal concentrations 0.5 and 50 µg/L) for one week. A spawning event was then induced and eggs were collected, counted, and their size measured (area and diameter). A slight but not significant effect was observed in lowering the number of eggs spawned when increasing the DEHP concentration. This effect was greater when adding spent gonads (possibly fully spawned females) to the total number of females. A significant effect of the lower dose on the average egg sizes was noticed, with a smaller area and diameter measured with respect to the control and the higher concentrated treatments. These results once again underline the importance for ecotoxicological studies to address the nonlinear dose-response effects of endocrine disruptive chemicals environmentally present at concentrations in the order of just a few µg/L that could not elicit a strong defence mechanism at low levels and be absorbed by filter feeder animals such as mussels. Our understanding of basic cellular processes has mostly been provided by mammalian cell culture, and by some non-mammalian vertebrate and few invertebrate cell culture models. Developing reliable culture conditions for non-model organisms is essential to allow investigation of more unusual cellular processes. Here, we investigate how cells isolated from different tissues of the marine mussel Mytilus edulis thrive and survive in vitro in the hope of establishing a suitable laboratory model for the investigation of cellular mechanisms specific to these bivalve mollusks. We found that cells dissociated from mantle tissue attached to the culture vessels and proliferated well in vitro, whereas cells isolated from gills, although remaining viable, did not maintain divisions over three to four weeks in culture. We used antibodies against the germ-line marker DEAD-box helicase 4 (DDX4), also known as VASA, and the epithelial cell marker cytokeratin to distinguish different cell types in culture. DDX4-positive cells were predominant in 25-day-old cultures from male mantles. Cells from other tissues remained in low numbers and did not seem to change in composition over time. The mussel industry faces challenges such as low and inconsistent levels of larvae settlement and poor-quality spat, leading to variable production. However, mussel farming remains a vital sustainable and environmentally responsible method for producing protein, fostering ecological responsibility in the aquaculture sector. We investigate the population connectivity and larval dispersion of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) in Scottish waters, as a case study, using a multidisciplinary approach that combined genetic data and particle modelling. This research allows us to develop a thorough understanding of blue mussel population dynamics in mid-latitude fjord regions, to infer gene-flow patterns, and to estimate population divergence. Our findings reveal a primary south-to-north particle transport direction and the presence of five genetic clusters. We discover a significant and continuous genetic material exchange among populations within the study area, with our biophysical model's outcomes aligning with our genetic observations. Additionally, our model reveals a robust connection between the southwest coast and the rest of the west coast. This study will guide the preservation of mussel farming regions, ensuring sustainable populations that contribute to marine ecosystem health and resilience. The study of hybrid zones offers important insights into speciation. Earlier studies on hybrid populations of the marine mussel species Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis in SW England provided evidence of admixture but were constrained by the limited number of molecular markers available. We use 57 ancestry‐informative SNPs, most of which have been mapped genetically, to provide evidence of distinctive differences between admixed populations in SW England and asymmetrical introgression from M. edulis to M. galloprovincialis. We combine the genetic study with analysis of phenotypic traits of potential ecological and adaptive significance. We demonstrate that hybrid individuals have brown mantle edges unlike the white or purple in the parental species, suggesting allelic or non‐allelic genomic interactions. We report differences in gonad development stage between the species consistent with a prezygotic barrier between the species. By incorporating results from publications dating back to 1980, we confirm the long‐term stability of the hybrid zone despite higher viability of M. galloprovincialis. This stability coincides with a dramatic change in temperature of UK coastal waters and suggests that these hybrid populations might be resisting the effects of global warming. However, a single SNP locus associated with the Notch transmembrane signalling protein shows a markedly different pattern of variation to the others and might be associated with adaptation of M. galloprovincialis to colder northern temperatures. Abstract Climate change may exacerbate the impact of invasive parasites from warmer climates through pre‐existing temperature adaptations. We investigated temperature impacts on two closely related marine parasitic copepod species that share the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) as host: Mytilicola orientalis has invaded the system from a warmer climate 90 years to adapt. In laboratory experiments with temperatures 10–26°C, covering current and future temperatures as well as heat waves, the development of both life cycle stages of both species accelerated with increasing temperature. In the parasitic stages, the growth of the established invader increased evenly from 10°C to 22°C, whereas the recent invader barely grew at all at 10°C and grew faster already at 18°C. In contrast, temperature had little effect on the transition success between life cycle stages. However, the highest temperature (26°C) limited the egg development success of the established invader and the host entry success of both species, whereas the infection success of the established invader increased at 18°C and 22°C. In general, our experiments indicate that the main effect of temperature on both species is through development speed and not life cycle stage transition success. Based on regional long‐term temperature data and predictions, the numbers of completed life cycles per year will increase for both parasites. The established invader seems better adapted for low current temperatures (around 10°C), whereas the more recent invader barely develops at these temperatures but can cope in high temperatures (around 26°C). Hence, pre‐existing temperature adaptations of the recent invader may allow the species to better cope with heat waves.

Abstract The increase in hard artificial structures in the marine environment is contributing to ocean sprawl. As well as adding hard structure to the seabed, mussel aquaculture adds rope droppers and anchor lines to the water column, where such structure would otherwise be absent. This paper aims to monitor the effects of mussel headlines on the pelagic fish community over time, as well as to investigate whether there is an interaction between the age of cultivated mussels with the number of epibiota species and the abundance of pelagic fishes. Two surveys were carried out: a time series monitoring survey to assess whether the mussel headlines change the surrounding fish species relative to control areas over time, and a fish aggregation device effect survey to investigate whether older and larger mussels support greater abundances of pelagic fishes and epibiota. The most abundant fish species was Atlantic horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus, with significantly greater numbers recorded around ropes growing older mussels. Results from the surveys show that the physical farm infrastructure has provided a substrate for colonisation by a variety of epibiota: A total of 21 species were recorded growing on the mussel ropes. Furthermore, the older and larger the mussels become, the greater the numbers of epibiota taxa that can colonise, coupled with a greater abundance of pelagic fish recorded around the ropes. The sustainable development of offshore Blue Industries is essential to produce renewable resources. This study brings essential evidence for marine managers and regulators that offshore mussel farming can provide benefits for pelagic and benthic species of both conservation and commercial importance while producing sustainable protein to feed a growing population.

Foundation species that modify their habitat can facilitate other species, including other foundation species. Most studies focus solely on a single foundation species, overlooking such facilitation cascades. In this study, we investigated the interactions between the two coastal foundation species Mytilus edulis (blue mussel) and Lanice conchilega (sand mason worm). We investigated whether these species engage in facilitative interactions or if their association simply reflects a shared ecological niche on the soft-sediment intertidal flats of the Dutch Wadden Sea. To do so, we performed species distribution modeling, manipulative field experiments, and field surveys. We found a positive association between both foundation species, with a 2.45 times higher occurrence of both species compared to a random distribution. In addition, these species partially occupied the same ecological niche. We demonstrated that L. conchilega provided settlement substrate for M. edulis spat, increasing densities by 400 times compared to bare plots. Furthermore, M. edulis reefs facilitated L. conchilega occurrence in the wake of the reef. Biogenic reef development revealed that this interspecific facilitation resulted in spatial habitat heterogeneity. Therefore, we conclude that interspecific facilitation can significantly enhance the occurrence of these two important intertidal foundation species. Consuming poisoned shellfish can lead to severe health problems and even death. Alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in Korea, and PSP is detected more in a wider area. However, the association between toxic dinoflagellates and shellfish poisoning is unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the toxicity, detoxification, and compositional differences in PSP in Mytilus edulis exposed to PSP caused by A. catenella and A. pacificum. High-performance liquid chromatography with post-column oxidation was used to analyze PSP toxicity in poisoned M. edulis. PSP in M. edulis increased as the A. catenella and A. pacificum cell density increased. However, the cell density of A. catenella peaked faster than that of A. pacificum, and a high level of toxicity was detected. In the detoxification experiment, PSP in M. edulis decreased rapidly within 24 h in filtered seawater. However, PSP was continuously detected without decreasing below the detection limit until the last day of the experiment. In addition, the carbamate composition (GTX1+4) was detected as the main toxic composition in poisoned M. edulis, unlike in vegetative cells. GTX1+4 can poison shellfish quickly when toxic dinoflagellates appear in the marine environment. However, poisoned shellfish take a long time to be completely detoxified. Moreover, if shellfish continuously feed on poisonous dinoflagellates, their toxicity can increase rapidly due to biotransformation. Our results can help identify the mechanisms of shellfish toxicity and detoxification after PSP caused by toxic dinoflagellates.

The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is a suspension feeder which has been used in gut‐microbiome surveys. Although raw 16S sequence data are often publicly available, unifying secondary analyses are lacking. The present work analysed raw data from seven projects conducted by one group over 7 years. Although each project had different motivations, experimental designs and conclusions, all selected samples were from the guts of M. edulis collected from a single location in Long Island Sound. The goal of this analysis was to determine which independent factors (e.g., collection date, depuration status) were responsible for governing composition and diversity in the gut microbiomes. Results indicated that whether mussels had undergone depuration, defined here as voidance of faeces in a controlled, no‐food period, was the primary factor that governed gut microbiome composition. Gut microbiomes from non‐depurated mussels were mixtures of resident and transient communities and were influenced by temporal factors. Resident communities from depurated mussels were influenced by the final food source and length of time host mussels were held under laboratory conditions. These findings reinforce the paradigm that gut microbiota are divided into resident and transient components and suggest that depuration status should be taken into consideration when designing and interpreting future experiments. Ingestion of microplastics (MP) by suspension‐feeding bivalves has been well‐documented. However, it is unclear whether exposure to MP could damage the stomach and digestive gland (gut) of these animals, causing ramifications for organism and ecosystem health. Here, we show no apparent effects of nylon microfiber (MF) ingestion on the gut microbiome or digestive tissues of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. We exposed mussels to two low concentrations (50 and 100 particles/L) of either nylon MF or Spartina spp. particles (dried, ground marsh grass), ca. 250–500 μm in length, or a no particle control laboratory treatment for 21 days. Results showed that nylon MF, when aged in coarsely filtered seawater, developed a different microbial community than Spartina spp. particles and seawater, however, even after exposure to this different community, mussel gut microbial communities resisted disturbance from nylon MF. The microbial communities of experimental mussels clustered together in ordination and were similar in taxonomic composition and measures of alpha diversity. Additionally, there was no evidence of damage to gut tissues after ingestion of nylon MF or Spartina spp. Post‐ingestive particle processing likely mediated a short gut retention time of these relatively large particles, contributing to the negligible treatment effects. Muscle atrophy is a complex physiological condition caused by a variety of reasons, including muscle disuse, aging, malnutrition, chronic diseases, immobilization, and hormonal imbalance. Beyond its effect on physical appearance, this condition significantly reduces the quality of human life, thus warranting the development of preventive strategies. Although exercising is effective in managing this condition, it is applicable only for individuals who can engage in physical activities and are not bedridden. A combination of exercise and nutritional supplementation has emerged as a more advantageous approach. Here, we evaluated the effects of enzyme-assisted hydrolysates of Mytilus edulis prepared using Protamex (PMH), Alcalase (AMH), or Flavourzyme (FMH) in protecting against muscle atrophy in a dexamethasone (Dex)-induced muscular atrophy model in vitro and in vitro. Alcalase-assisted M. edulis hydrolysate (AMH) was the most efficient among the tested treatments and resulted in higher protein recovery (57.06 ± 0.42%) and abundant amino acid composition (43,158 mg/100 g; 43.16%). AMH treatment also escalated the proliferation of C2C12 cells while increasing the total number of nuclei, myotube coverage, and myotube diameter. These results were corroborated by a successful reduction in the levels of proteins responsible for muscle atrophy, including E3 ubiquitin ligases, and an increase in the expression of proteins associated with muscle hypertrophy, including myogenin and MyHC. These results were further solidified by the successful enhancement of locomotor ability and body weight in zebrafish following AMH treatment. Shellfish aquaculture farms, due to their coastal position, face the threat of exposure to harmful algal blooms. Such blooms can release, among others, paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) produced by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella and are known to cause the restriction of bivalve harvesting sites. Shellfish can accumulate PSTs in levels that are poisonous for humans, therefore making them unfit for consumption. Thus, the ability to detect PSTs before they reach the critical threshold is crucial for minimizing losses in the industry. Previous studies have demonstrated that toxic algae detection is possible with the use of an early warning system based on the valve-gaping behaviour of blue mussel Mytilus edulis. However, some studies observed the presence of toxin resistance in other species of bivalves when they are regularly exposed to PSTs. If no resistance is observed whatever the past history of the populations would be with regard to PST exposure, this species could be appropriate as a sentinel candidate. In this study, we compare the valve-gaping behaviour of two blue mussel populations with contrasting long-term histories of PSTs events (i.e., regularly vs. not previously exposed to the PSTs producer) were compared using experimental exposure of A. catenella to M. edulis. It was found that mussels from both populations exhibited similar gaping behaviour patterns when exposed to A. catenella. For both populations, the number of valve closures and closure duration tended to increase in the presence of A. catenella, which suggested an avoidance response to the toxic dinoflagellate.
