1. PROXI: Challenging the GNNs for Link Prediction

Abstract

Over the past decade, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have transformed graph representation learning. In the widely adopted message-passing GNN framework, nodes refine their representations by aggregating information from neighboring nodes iteratively. While GNNs excel in various domains, recent theoretical studies have raised concerns about their capabilities. GNNs aim to address various graph-related tasks by utilizing such node representations, however, this one-size-fits-all approach proves suboptimal for diverse tasks. Motivated by these observations, we conduct empirical tests to compare the performance of current GNN models with more conventional and direct methods in link prediction tasks. Introducing our model, PROXI, which leverages proximity information of node pairs in both graph and attribute spaces, we find that standard machine learning (ML) models perform competitively, even outperforming cutting-edge GNN models when applied to these proximity metrics derived from node neighborhoods and attributes. This holds true across both homophilic and heterophilic networks, as well as small and large benchmark datasets, including those from the Open Graph Benchmark (OGB). Moreover, we show that augmenting traditional GNNs with PROXI significantly boosts their link prediction performance. Our empirical findings corroborate the previously mentioned theoretical observations and imply that there exists ample room for enhancement in current GNN models to reach their potential.

2. Equilibrium Contact Angles and Dewetting in Capillaries

Abstract

In this work, we extend the model of contact angles that we have previously developed for sessile drops on a wetted surface to the case of a meniscus in a capillary. The underlying physics of our model describe the intermolecular forces between the fluid and the surface of the capillary that result in the formation of a thin, non-removable fluid layer that coats the capillary wall. We describe the shape of the meniscus using a Young-Laplace equation and an incompressible, two-phase, CFD calculation, both modified to take into account intermolecular forces using the disjoining pressure model. We find that our numerical solutions of the Young-Laplace equation and equilibrium meniscus shapes obtained by CFD agree well with each other. Furthermore, for capillaries that are sufficiently larger than the thickness of the non-removable film, our numerical solutions agree well with the effective contact angle model that we previously developed for sessile drops. Finally, we observe that it is possible to tune the disjoining pressure model parameters so that the intermolecular forces between the liquid and solid molecules becomes so strong compared to the surface tension that our formula for effective contact angle gives an imaginary solution. We analyze this situation using CFD and find that it corresponds to dewetting, where the bulk liquid detaches from the walls of the capillary leaving behind the non-removable thin liquid film., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

4. Analyzing the relationship between gene expression and phenotype in space-flown mice using a causal inference machine learning ensemble

Abstract

Abstract Spaceflight has several detrimental effects on human and rodent health. For example, liver dysfunction is a common phenotype observed in space-flown rodents, and this dysfunction is partially reflected in transcriptomic changes. Studies linking transcriptomics with liver dysfunction rely on tools which exploit correlation, but these tools make no attempt to disambiguate true correlations from spurious ones. In this work, we use a machine learning ensemble of causal inference methods called the Causal Research and Inference Search Platform (CRISP) which was developed to predict causal features of a binary response variable from high-dimensional input. We used CRISP to identify genes robustly correlated with a lipid density phenotype using transcriptomic and histological data from the NASA Open Science Data Repository (OSDR). Our approach identified genes and molecular targets not predicted by previous traditional differential gene expression analyses. These genes are likely to play a pivotal role in the liver dysfunction observed in space-flown rodents, and this work opens the door to identifying novel countermeasures for space travel.

Abstract

South Africa is among the world's top eight tuberculosis (TB) burden countries, and despite a focus on HIV-TB co-infection, most of the population living with TB are not HIV co-infected. The disease is endemic across the country, with 80-90% exposure by adulthood. We investigated epidemiological risk factors for (TB) in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa: an understudied TB endemic region with extreme TB incidence (926/100,000). We leveraged the population's high TB incidence and community transmission to design a case-control study with similar mechanisms of exposure between the groups. We recruited 1,126 participants with suspected TB from 12 community health clinics and generated a cohort of 774 individuals (cases = 374, controls = 400) after implementing our enrollment criteria. All participants were GeneXpert Ultra tested for active TB by a local clinic. We assessed important risk factors for active TB using logistic regression and random forest modeling. We find that factors commonly identified in other global populations tend to replicate in our study, e.g. male gender and residence in a town had significant effects on TB risk (OR: 3.02 [95% CI: 2.30-4.71]; OR: 3.20 [95% CI: 2.26-4.55]). We also tested for demographic factors that may uniquely reflect historical changes in health conditions in South Africa. We find that socioeconomic status (SES) significantly interacts with an individual's age (p = 0.0005) indicating that protective effect of higher SES changed across age cohorts. We further find that being born in a rural area and moving to a town strongly increases TB risk, while town birthplace and current rural residence is protective. These interaction effects reflect rapid demographic changes, specifically SES over recent generations and mobility, in South Africa. Our models show that such risk factors combined explain 19-21% of the variance (r2) in TB case/control status.

6. Training at Lockheed Martin Space: A Kirkpatrick Evaluation of Current Practices and Impact on Employee Retention

Abstract

The study conducted a survey to assess employee perceptions of online training practices at the Space Business Area at Lockheed Martin Corp (LMC), specifically within the Space Business Area (BA), to evaluate current training and its correlation with employee retention. Utilizing the New World Kirkpatrick Model (NWKM), the survey measured four levels: Level 1 (Engagement, Relevance, and Customer Satisfaction), Level 2 (Attitude, Confidence, and Commitment), Level 3 (On-The-Job Behaviors and Drivers), Level 4 (Leading Indicators & Organizational Results) and Level 4 (Individual Results & Retention). Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate training at each level, and multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the impact of current online training practices on employee retention. The sample included 72 employees, but results were limited to Space BA, and constraints were placed on recruitment and data collection. The survey responses revealed moderate levels of engagement and satisfaction with training, with 66% indicating lower engagement due to job priorities, irrelevance, and lack of incentives. Engagement increased with job tenure, especially among those in their 2nd to 5th year. While 28% found the training relevant, newer and older employees perceived it as more useful despite minimal incentives. High commitment to training was reported by 71%, with lower commitment linked to unclear expectations, lack of support, and confidence issues. Training positively impacted job behavior, with 57% applying what they learned, influenced by resources, accountability, and peer support. However, 43% struggled with application due to other priorities and lack of support. The overall organizational impact was moderately positive, with 65% rating the online training at a 6 or higher (on a scale of 10). Positive impacts were noted in quality of work, customer satisfaction, peer relationships, and productivity, but not on the participant perceptions of organizational mission. In light of the issues with normality and homogeneity in the data that require caution in the interpretation of the findings, the regression model showed a weak but significant effect of training on retention, with no statistical significance found in the individual impact of Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 on retention. Exploratory analysis of the impact of a select set of factors from each level revealed that commitment to applying training to work and seeing positive results from the training are factors and intermediary outcomes that can influence employee retention. More exploratory analysis indicated that training impact perceptions varied with job tenure, with newer employees reporting the highest ratings, followed by longer-tenured employees, while those with 1-5 years reported the lowest ratings, largely because this group often reported having higher and competing priorities at work. Finally, the findings in this study reveal that factors from Levels 1, 2, and 3 were weakly associated with retention and that higher commitment to training and more personal results observed after training are specific factors that were found to be correlated with higher intention to stay on the job. Overall, these findings imply that effective training programs should be relevant, engaging, and aligned with job responsibilities and organizational goals. Providing incentives, clear expectations, resources, and accountability is crucial. Training should be adaptable to different job tenures, with continuous evaluation and feedback to identify areas for improvement. Ensuring training is useful and worthwhile can enhance its impact on job behavior and organizational effectiveness, ultimately improving job performance, satisfaction, and retention based on the results of the exploratory regression analysis. 7. Asynchronous and Blended Learning: A Study of Middle School Student Achievement and Growth in Reading during a Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic affected schools worldwide. When schools shut down, teachers and students had no choice but to go to remote learning. A school in a rural setting participated in blended learning where students did a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning. The subject of this study was two sixth grade groups of students with the focus being their scores of reading achievement. One classroom conducted traditional face-to-face learning during the 2019-2020 year before the pandemic, while the other conducted blended learning during the 2020-2021 school year during the pandemic. T-tests were used to analyze the means and change scores for each group based on their scores from the district benchmark STAR Reading pretest in the fall and posttest in the winter. The results showed that students who participated in the face-to-face instruction had lower growth than the blended learning students from the pre- to posttest; however, the students who participated in the blended learning had lower pre- and posttest scores, but they showed significant growth from fall to winter. This study concluded that blended learning can be as, if not more, effective in middle school reading instruction. Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate whether the implementation of a belongingness strategy positively influences student performance in an online higher education environment. Belonging is defined as a student’s sense of being accepted, respected, encouraged and supported in their college environment by both peers and faculty. This study’s problem relates to the lack of belongingness which ultimately impedes a student’s ability to thrive academically. Researchers have investigated the relationship between a student’s sense of belonging and their academic performance and how the lack of a sense of belonging leads to disengagement and negative implications. The current literature is predominantly anecdotal, and we found that most studies did not conduct quantitative analyses. To address the gap in the literature, our methodology utilized student performance metrics which were assessed for a six-month period in 2021 prior to the implementation of a belongingness strategy and for a six-month period in 2022 after the implementation. The results of the empirical analysis (t-test) indicated that the student performance metrics increased with the implementation of the belongingness strategy, with all metrics having a p value of less than .05. The conclusion of this study is that students’ sense of belongingness positively impacts academic performance.

Criminal Prosecutions: Domestic, International, [...], The field of "transitional justice" refers to a range of processes and mechanisms for accountability, truth-seeking, and reconciliation that governments and communities pursue in the aftermath of major societal traumas, including civil war, mass atrocities, and authoritarianism. This relatively new field emerged in the 1980s as scholars, practitioners, and policymakers looked for guidance to support post-authoritarian and post-communist transitions to democracy in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Since then, the field has grown rapidly--so rapidly that it is outpacing its capacity to learn from past mistakes. Recent methodological advances in the study of public attitudes about transitional justice through quantitative surveys and qualitative interview methods provide unprecedented insights into how different mechanisms--including domestic and international prosecutions, truth commissions, amnesty laws, and compensation--are perceived by their intended beneficiaries. The results have been troubling. Numerous studies in diverse contexts found that some of the most well-known transitional justice mechanisms, including those employed in South Africa, Rwanda, and Cambodia, failed to achieve their objectives of peacebuilding and reconciliation. In some cases, these policies had harmful consequences for their intended beneficiaries, including retraumatization and perceived "justice gaps" between victims' preferred remedies and their actual outcomes. There is an urgent need for the field of transitional justice to learn from this growing body of empirical research to develop evidence-based policies and programs that achieve their intended objectives. This Feature critically reviews the intellectual development of the field, consolidating empirical findings of relevant studies across disciplines--law, political science, sociology, economics, public health, psychology, and anthropology--and identifying open debates and questions for future research. We focus on research about public attitudes toward transitional justice in the communities directly impacted by conflict. In addition to reviewing previous research, we present new data from original public opinion surveys in Iraq and Ukraine relevant to ongoing transitional justice efforts in those countries. We use this evidence to identify lessons learned, including mistakes, in the design and implementation of previous transitional justice processes. We conclude by discussing the normative and prescriptive implications of our findings for efforts to improve future transitional justice laws and policies.

13. Persistence of Matrilocal Postmarital Residence Across Multiple Generations in Southern Africa

Abstract

Factors such as subsistence turnover, warfare, or interaction between different groups can be major sources of cultural change in human populations. Global demographic shifts such as the transition to agriculture during the Neolithic and more recently the urbanization and globalization of the twentieth century have been major catalysts for cultural change. Here, we test whether cultural traits such as patri/matrilocality and postmarital migration persist in the face of social upheaval and gene flow during the past 150 years in postcolonial South Africa. The recent history of South Africa has seen major demographic shifts that resulted in the displacement and forced sedentism of indigenous Khoekhoe and San populations. During the expansion of the colonial frontier, the Khoe-San admixed with European colonists and enslaved individuals from West/Central Africa, Indonesia, and South Asia, introducing novel cultural norms. We conducted demographic interviews among Nama and Cederberg communities representing nearly 3,000 individuals across three generations. Despite the history of colonial expansion, and the subsequent incorporation of Khoe-San and Khoe-San-descendant communities into a colonial society with strong patrilocal norms, patrilocality is the least common postmarital residence pattern in our study populations today. Our results suggest that more recent forces of integration into the market economy are likely the primary drivers of change in the cultural traits examined in our study. Birthplace had a strong effect on an individual's odds of migration, distance moved, and postmarital residence form. These effects are at least partially explained by the population size of the birthplace. Our results suggest that market factors local to birthplaces are important drivers of residence decisions, although the frequency of matrilocal residence and a geographic and temporal cline in migration and residence patterns also indicate the persistence of some historic Khoe-San cultural traits in contemporary groups.

17. Public responses and parasocial relationships following senator John Fetterman’s depression disclosure

Abstract

Research has found that when a public figure discloses an illness, it can motivate members of the public to reconsider their own health behaviors, particularly when they have a parasocial relationship with the public figure. When the public figure is a politician, it is possible that partisan differences may also influence emotional, attentional, and behavioral responses to health news. We empirically examined public responses to Democrat John Fetterman’s disclosure of his treatment for depression shortly after he was inducted into the United States Senate as the junior senator from Pennsylvania in 2023. Using a survey of adult Pennsylvania residents who identified as eligible voters in April 2023, we found that 204 respondents were aware of the news of Fetterman’s diagnosis of and treatment for depression. Our data revealed that differences in demographics and parasocial relationships—both positive and negative—with Fetterman predicted different patterns of emotional responses to the news. In addition, age, anger, a negative parasocial relationship, and a positive parasocial relationship were associated with additional outcomes, including attention to news about the disclosure and depression-related information seeking. Mental health advocates could use politicians’ depression disclosures to provide information at a time when people are paying more attention to the condition; however, they may need to find other public figures to counteract negative responses to partisan officials. Policymakers could also consider funding mental health campaigns, which could be launched alongside public figure disclosures.

Abstract

Abstract Background Breast cancer's complex transcriptional landscape requires an improved understanding of cellular diversity to identify effective treatments. The study of genetic variations among breast cancer subtypes at single‐cell resolution has potential to deepen our insights into cancer progression. Methods In this study, we amalgamate single‐cell RNA sequencing data from patient tumours and matched lymph metastasis, reduction mammoplasties, breast cancer patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs), PDX‐derived organoids (PDXOs), and cell lines resulting in a diverse dataset of 117 samples with 506 719 total cells. These samples encompass hormone receptor positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive (HER2+), and triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes, including isogenic model pairs. Herein, we delineated similarities and distinctions across models and patient samples and explore therapeutic drug efficacy based on subtype proportions. Results PDX models more closely resemble patient samples in terms of tumour heterogeneity and cell cycle characteristics when compared with TNBC cell lines. Acquired drug resistance was associated with an increase in basal‐like cell proportions within TNBC PDX tumours as defined with SCSubtype and TNBCtype cell typing predictors. All patient samples contained a mixture of subtypes; compared to primary tumours HR+ lymph node metastases had lower proportions of HER2‐Enriched cells. PDXOs exhibited differences in metabolic‐related transcripts compared to PDX tumours. Correlative analyses of cytotoxic drugs on PDX cells identified therapeutic efficacy was based on subtype proportion. Conclusions We present a substantial multimodel dataset, a dynamic approach to cell‐wise sample annotation, and a comprehensive interrogation of models within systems of human breast cancer. This analysis and reference will facilitate informed decision‐making in preclinical research and therapeutic development through its elucidation of model limitations, subtype‐specific insights and novel targetable pathways. Key points Patient‐derived xenografts models more closely resemble patient samples in tumour heterogeneity and cell cycle characteristics when compared with cell lines. 3D organoid models exhibit differences in metabolic profiles compared to their in vivo counterparts. A valuable multimodel reference dataset that can be useful in elucidating model differences and novel targetable pathways.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

The need for maintaining cell-spheroid viability and function within high-density cultures is unmet for various clinical and experimental applications, including cell therapies. One immediate application is for transplantation of pancreatic islets, a clinically recognized treatment option to cure type 1 diabetes; islets are isolated from a donor for subsequent culture prior to transplantation. However, high seeding conditions cause unsolicited fusion of multiple spheroids, thereby limiting oxygen diffusion to induce hypoxic cell death. Here we introduce a culture dish incorporating a micropyramid-patterned surface to prevent the unsolicited fusion and oxygen-permeable bottom for optimal oxygen environment. A 400µm-thick, oxygen-permeable polydimethylsiloxane sheet topped with micropyramid pattern of 400µm-base and 200µm-height was fabricated to apply to the 24-well plate format. The micropyramid pattern separated the individual pancreatic islets to prevent the fusion of multiple islets. This platform supported the high oxygen demand of islets at high seeding density at 260 islet equivalents cm-2, a 2-3-fold higher seeding density compared to the conventional islet culture used in a preparation for the clinical islet transplantations, demonstrating improved islet morphology, metabolism and function in a 4 d-culture. Transplantation of these islets into immunodeficient diabetic mice exhibited significantly improved engraftment to achieve euglycemia compared to islets cultured in the conventional culture wells. Collectively, this simple design modification allows for high-density cultures of three-dimensional cell spheroids to improve the viability and function for an array of investigational and clinical replacement tissues.

Abstract

BackgroundIn the past several decades, obesity has become a major public health issue worldwide, associated with increased rates of chronic disease and death. Like many developing nations, South Africa is experiencing rapid increases in BMI, and as a result, evidence-based preventive strategies are needed to reduce the increasing burden of overweight and obesity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of overweight and obesity among a multi-ethnic cohort from the rural Northern Cape of South Africa.MethodsThese data were collected as part of a tuberculosis (TB) case-control study, with 395 healthy control participants included in the final analysis. Overweight and obesity were defined according to WHO classification. Multivariate linear models of BMI were generated using sex, age, education level, smoking, alcohol consumption, and diabetes as predictor variables. We also used multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the relationship of these factors with overweight and obesity.ResultsThe average BMI in our study cohort was 25.2. The prevalence of overweight was 18.0% and the prevalence of obesity was 25.0%. We find that female sex, being older, having more years of formal education, having diabetes, and being in a rural area are all positively associated with BMI in our dataset. Women (OR = 5.6, 95% CI [3.3-9.8]), rural individuals (OR = 3.3, 95% CI [1.9-6.0]), older individuals (OR = 1.02, 95% CI [1-1.04]), and those with more years of education (OR = 1.2, 95% CI [1.09-1.32]) were all more likely to be overweight or obese. Alternatively, being a smoker is negatively associated with BMI and decreases one's odds of being overweight or obese (OR = 0.28, 95% CI [0.16-0.46]).ConclusionsWe observed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity in this study. The odds of being overweight and obese were higher in women, those living in rural areas, and those with more education, and increases with age. Community-based interventions to control obesity in this region should pay special attention to these groups.

Introduction: “Excited delirium” (ExD) is purported to represent a certain type of agitated state that can lead to unexpected death. The 2009 “White Paper Report on Excited Delirium Syndrome,” authored by the American College of Emergency Medicine (ACEP) Excited Delirium Task Force, continues to play a pivotal role in defining ExD. Since that report was produced, there has been an increasing appreciation that the label has been applied more often to Black people.Methods: Our aim was to analyze the language of the 2009 report, the role of potential stereotypes, and the mechanisms that may potentially encourage bias.Results: Our evaluation of the diagnostic criteria for ExD proposed in the 2009 report shows that it relies on persistent racial stereotypes: eg, unusual strength, decreased sensitivity to pain, and bizarre behavior. Research indicates that use of such stereotypes could encourage biased diagnosis and treatment.Conclusion: We suggest that the emergency medicine community avoid use of the concept ExD and that ACEP withdraw implicit or explicit support of the report.

26. Schools and COVID-19: Working through and beyond Education's Greatest Challenge. What's Next: Policy Recommendations from the Bush Institute

Abstract

Federal and state governments -- as well as philanthropists and foundations -- are being called upon to invest millions of dollars in the public-school system to help schools and districts navigate the impact of the pandemic on student success. The challenges facing education leaders are immense and complex. The learning loss for students is profound, and significant investment is warranted to aid and accelerate recovery. One clear way to support student learning during this time is to remove the burden of the health and safety aspects of pandemic planning and response from the school building so that teachers and principals can focus on what they do best -- educating the nation's children. This report outlines four conditions to thoughtfully manage investments and interventions during a fast-moving and complex challenge: (1) prioritize student academic success and engagement; (2) organize people to support campuses; (3) communicate clearly and often with principals, educators, and families; and (4) act, reflect, and adjust in regular swift cycles.

Abstract

With the increasing use of triploid fish for sport fisheries management, biologists, researchers, and managers working in field environments need practical methods to determine ploidy. Cytological methods (e.g., flow cytometry, Coulter counter) using erythrocytes are the most common for ploidy determination in fishes. However, collecting and storing erythrocytes can be logistically challenging during field work, and donor fish need to be alive or freshly killed. With rapid advances in molecular genetics, biologists, researchers, and managers may be unaware of molecular approaches for ploidy determination that could alleviate the difficulties associated with cytological methods and allow ploidy determination from archived samples (e.g., fin clips, scales, otoliths). In this study, we analyzed the agreement between molecular-based (using fin tissue) and Coulter counter-based (using blood) ploidy determinations for Walleyes Stizostedion vitreum—the first assessment of concordance between molecular and cytological methods for determining ploidy in the family Percidae. We found that agreement between these two methods was >98%. The high degree of agreement and greater ease of collecting and storing samples for molecular-based approaches relative to the traditional cytological ones support the utility of molecular methods for ploidy determination.

Abstract

This randomized trial compared the first online parent training program for an evidence-supported executive function intervention for autism to in-person parent training with the same dose and content. Parents of autistic children (8-12 years-old; Full Scale IQ above 70) were randomized to in-person (n = 51) or online (n = 46) training. Training acceptability and feasibility were rated highly by parents, without significant differences between groups. The completion rate was lower for parents in the online versus the in-person training condition, but neither the total time spent with training materials, nor parent and child outcomes differed by condition. Parents reported that training resulted in a reduction in caregiver strain (Cohen's d = 0.66) and modest improvements in child flexibility, emotional control and global EF, but not planning and organization. Dose of parent training had a significant positive effect on child planning and organization problems. These findings did not support the hypothesized superiority of online to in-person training, but they did indicate online is as effective as in-person training at helping parents learn to improve their autistic children's EF abilities and reduce their own experience of parenting strain. Implications included increased access to training for parents who experience barriers to receiving in-person care.

Abstract

The fate of hunting and gathering populations following the rise of agriculture and pastoralism remains a topic of debate in the study of human prehistory. Studies of ancient and modern genomes have found that autochthonous groups were largely replaced by expanding farmer populations with varying levels of gene flow, a characterization that is influenced by the almost universal focus on the European Neolithic.1-5 We sought to understand the demographic impact of an ongoing cultural transition to farming in Southwest Ethiopia, one of the last regions in Africa to experience such shifts.6 Importantly, Southwest Ethiopia is home to several of the world's remaining hunter-gatherer groups, including the Chabu people, who are currently transitioning away from their traditional mode of subsistence.7 We generated genome-wide data from the Chabu and four neighboring populations, the Majang, Shekkacho, Bench, and Sheko, to characterize their genetic ancestry and estimate their effective population sizes over the last 60 generations. We show that the Chabu are a distinct population closely related to ancient people who occupied Southwest Ethiopia >4,500 years ago. Furthermore, the Chabu are undergoing a severe population bottleneck, which began approximately 1,400 years ago. By analyzing eleven Eastern African populations, we find evidence for divergent demographic trajectories among hunter-gatherer-descendant groups. Our results illustrate that although foragers respond to encroaching agriculture and pastoralism with multiple strategies, including cultural adoption of agropastoralism, gene flow, and economic specialization, they often face population decline.

Abstract

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as traumatic events occurring before age 18, such as maltreatment, life-threatening accidents, harsh migration experiences, or violence. Screening for ACEs includes asking questions about an individuals early exposure to these types of events. ACEs screenings have potential value in identifying children exposed to chronic and significant stress that produces elevated cortisol levels (i.e., toxic stress), and its associated physical and mental health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, asthma, ADHD, anxiety, and substance dependence. However, ACEs screenings are seldom used in primary care settings. The Surgeon General of California has addressed this care gap by introducing ACEs Aware, an ACEs screening fee-for-service healthcare policy signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Since January 2020, Medi-Cal, Californias Medicaid health care program, has reimbursed primary care providers for using the Pediatric ACEs and Related Life-events Screener (PEARLS) tool to screen children and adults for ACEs during wellness visits. To achieve the goals set by the ACEs Aware state policy, it is essential to develop and test implementation strategies that are informed by the values, priorities, and resources of clinical settings, healthcare professionals, and end-users. To address this need, we partnered with a system of federally qualified health centers in Southern California on a pilot study to facilitate the implementation of ACEs screenings in five community-based clinics. The health centers had broad ideas for an implementation strategy, as well as best practices to improve adoption of screenings, such as focusing on staff training to improve clinic workflow. This knowledge was incorporated into the development of an implementation strategy template, used at the outset of this study. We used the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation and Sustainment (EPIS) framework to guide the study and inform a participatory planning process called Implementation Mapping. In this paper, we describe how Implementation Mapping was used to engage diverse stakeholders and guide them through a systematic process that resulted in the development of the implementation strategy. We also detail how the EPIS framework informed each Implementation Mapping Task and provide recommendations for developing implementation strategies using EPIS and Implementation Mapping in health-care settings.

43. Enhancing Conversations with English Language Learners in Communication Centers

Abstract

Communication centers often focus on supporting students' communicative competencies in public speaking but some centers have expanded this focus to include support for English language learners (ELLs). Armed with research on the value of conversation in language acquisition, the University Speaking Center has incorporated peer consulting of ELLs, known as conversation consultations, into its offered services and evolved over time through a collaborative process with student staff, English language instructors, and ELLs in efforts to be both effective and responsive to those who we seek to support. The motivation to support speakers in their ongoing process of becoming more confident and competent oral communicators has allowed for the development of a multifaceted model of service for ELLs at each level of language acquisition.

Abstract

Introduction Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates are lower than other recommended adolescent vaccines. Cancer survivor narratives are used to promote cancer prevention and control, but little is known about their impact on adolescent HPV vaccination. Objective This pilot study explored the feasibility and effects of a video education intervention using a cancer survivor narrative to improve parents’ attitudes toward and intentions to get the HPV vaccine. Methods This study utilized a one-group design; participants completed a pre-intervention survey, watched the video before attending their sons’ wellness visits, and completed a post-intervention survey within one week of their appointment. Using the narrative persuasion framework, we developed a 4-minute video of a local HPV-related cancer survivor to promote the HPV vaccine as cancer prevention. We recruited 37 participants between June and October 2020. Participants were parents of males ages 9-17 who had not yet initiated HPV vaccination. Results After the video, more parents agreed that HPV vaccination is safe (pre: 66% vs. post: 82%; P = .045) and that their child’s chances of getting HPV-related cancer in the future are high (pre: 24% vs. post: 46%; P = .014). Overall, 91% of parents felt the cancer survivor story helped them understand the risks of HPV cancers, and 52% said the story influenced their decision to start HPV vaccination for their child. Conclusions Our findings suggest that cancer survivor narratives influence parents’ vaccine opinions and understanding of their child’s risk of HPV infection, leading to increased parental intent to get the HPV vaccine for their adolescent males.
