Janus membranes with asymmetric surface wettability have been extensively utilized in various fields, including fog harvesting, because of their novel liquid transport properties. However, Janus membranes have an inherent disadvantage in terms of aerodynamic efficiency in harvesting fog because of the clogged water bridges caused by the small pore size. In the present work, we applied Janus wettability to mesh geometry with systematically varying hole sizes. For a clogged mesh with a small hole size, capillary water transport to the mesh back via the wettability gradient in the direction of fog flow helps harvest more fog by enhancing water drainage, similarly to the Janus membrane. The advantage of the capillary water transport extends to a clog-free mesh with larger hole sizes but more preferably to a Janus mesh with a superhydrophilic back, which presents the highest level of fog-harvesting yield because of the fast shedding frequency and short onset time. In contrast, a Janus mesh with a superhydrophobic front, which also has a wettability gradient along the fog flow, produces a lower fog-harvesting performance, particularly at slow fog speeds, because of the dropwise deposition of large water drops that locally disturb fog flow around a protruding water surface. On the other hand, the other type of Janus mesh with a superhydrophilic front is observed to minimize this disadvantage in the local fog flow by virtue of the filmwise deposition. It is also found that some Janus treatments can help protect mesh holes from clogging up by either forming a thin water meniscus or resisting water transport through the mesh holes.

Liquid mobility is ubiquitous in nature, with droplets emerging at all size scales, and artificial surfaces have been designed to mimic such mobility over the past few decades. Meanwhile, millimeter-sized droplets are frequently used for wettability characterization, even with facial mask applications, although these applications have a droplet-size target range that spans from millimeters to aerosols measuring less than a few micrometers. Unlike large droplets, microdroplets can interact sensitively with the fibers they contact with and are prone to evaporation. However, wetting behaviors at the single-microfiber level remain poorly understood. Herein, we characterized the wettability of fibrous layers, which revealed that a multiscale landscape of droplets ranged from the millimeter to the micrometer scale. The contact angle (CA) values of small droplets on pristine fibrous media showed sudden decrements, especially on a single microfiber, owing to the lack of air cushions for the tiny droplets. Moreover, droplets easily adhered to the pristine layer during droplet impact tests and then yielding widespread areas of contamination on the microfibers. To resolve this, we carved nanowalls on the pristine fibers by plasma etching, which effectively suppressed such wetting phenomena. Significantly, the resulting topographies of the microfibers managed the dynamic wettability of droplets at the multiscale, which reduced the probability of contamination with impact droplets and suppressed the wetting transition upon evaporation. These findings for the dynamic wettability of fibrous media will be useful in the fight against infectious droplets.

Controlling the dimensional aspect of conductive coordination polymers is currently a key scientific interest. Herein, solution-based dimension control strategies are proposed for copper chloride thiourea (CuCl-TU) coordination polymers that enable centimeter-scale, 2D nanosheet formation for use as transparent electrodes. Low sulfur fuel oils (LSFOs) with less than 0.5% sulfur content have been mandated for marine vessels by the International Maritime Organization since 2020. However, owing to the low dispersibility and high viscosity of LSFOs, their oceanic spills are difficult to clean using conventional response systems. In this study, we propose a superhydrophilic and hygroscopic ramie to clean spilled LSFO. To this end, a raw ramie fiber, which is intrinsically hydrophobic, was treated using a mild alkali to remove its waxy, rough, and gummy veneer and reveal a smooth surface. This substantially improved its hygroscopic nature, superhydrophilicity, and water-retention, while preserving its mechanical durability in dry and wet environments. The hygroscopic ramie exhibited underwater superoleophobicity and self-cleaning abilities against highly adhesive LSFOs. Two proofs-of-concept are demonstrated in this study-an oil-proof glove for maximizing oil repellency and a direct oil-scooping device for simple and continuous recovery of spilled oil with high efficiency.

Micrometer sized FeAl particles were added on 304 stainless steel surfaces to prepare rough surfaces with irregular patterns to make the surface super hydrophilic in order to effectively coat catalyst carrier alumina slurry on them. This method was compared with other conventional methods as follows. Micromachining and acid etching were firstly tried to prepare regular patterned surfaces with square micropillar arrays. Sand blasting was then tried to create micro roughness of the surface by removing materials from the surface. These methods were not so successful with contact angles higher than 50° for concentrated alumina slurry on the treated surfaces. In contrast to this, micrometer sized FeAl particles added 304 stainless steel surfaces showed excellent wettability with contact angles as low as 15° for concentrated alumina slurry on the treated surface. It was also observed that FeAl treated stainless steel surfaces were stable up to 700 °C, indicating good adhesion between the catalyst support substrate and catalyst carrier layer at high temperatures.

Nanostructured glass with subwavelength hollow nanopillars of diameters of sub-65 nm was fabricated, showing high optical transmittance and ultralow diffuse reflectance. A simple process involving single-step plasma etching was used on a glass slide coated with a SiO2 sacrificial film. First, SiO2 nanodot structures were formed using plasma-induced anisotropic etching with CF4 plasma. The SiO2 nanodot array then became a secondary etching mask to form hollow nanopillars on the glass. The hollow structures formed at the upper part reaching up to the apex of the nanopillar had a lower solid fraction, while the lower part had a higher fraction. The refractive index (RI) gradually increased from 1.09 (near the value for air) to 1.42 (near the value for glass). Geometry-induced RI gradient enhanced light transmi, while it significantly reduced diffuse reflectance, particularly in the shorter wavelengths, thus suppressing the haziness or milky appearance of the nanostructured glass. Soft, stretchable, conductive thin films have propelled to the forefront of applications in stretchable sensors for on-skin health monitoring. Stretchable conductive films require high conformability, stretchability, and mechanical/chemical stability when integrated into the skin. Here, we present a highly stretchable, conductive, and transparent natural rubber/silver nanowire (AgNW)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite film. Overcoating the PEDOT:PSS layer results in outstanding mechanical robustness and chemical stability by suppressing the mechanical and chemical degradation of the nanowire networks. Moreover, the introduction of the organic surface modifier enhances the bonding strength between the natural rubber substrate and AgNW at the interface. The highly conformable composite films are integrated into multifunctional on-skin sensors for monitoring various human motions and biological signals with low-power consumption. We believe that the highly stretchable, robust, and conformable natural rubber/AgNW/PEDOT:PSS composite film can offer new opportunities for next-generation wearable sensors for body motion and physiological monitoring.

Nanostructured cellulose fabric with an air-bubble-enhanced anti-oil fouling property is introduced for quick oil-cleaning by water even with the surface fouled by oil before water contact under a dry state. It is very challenging to recover the super-hydrophilicity because once the surface is oil-fouled, it is hard to be re-wetted by water. Anti-oil-fouling under a dry state was realized through two main features of the nanostructured, porous fabric: a low solid fraction with high-aspect-ratio nanostructures significantly increasing the retracting forces, and trapped multiscale air bubbles increasing the buoyancy and backpressure for an oil-layer rupture. The nanostructures were formed on cellulose-based rayon microfibers through selective etching with oxygen plasma, forming a nanoscale open-pore structure. Viscous crude oil fouled on a fabric under a dry state was cleaned by immersion into water owing to a higher water affinity of the rayon material and low solid fraction of the high-aspect-ratio nanostructures. Air bubbles trapped in dry porous fibers and nanostructures promote oil detachment from the fouled sites. The macroscale bubbles add buoyancy on top of the oil droplets, enhancing the oil receding at the oil-water-solid interface, whereas the relatively smaller microscale bubbles induce a backpressure underneath the oil droplets. The oil-proofing fabric was used for protecting underwater conductive sensors, allowing a robot fish to swim freely in oily water.

Conductive composite materials have attracted considerable interest of researchers for application in stretchable sensors for wearable health monitoring. In this study, highly stretchable and conductive composite films based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiopehe):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (CMC-PEDOT:PSS) were fabricated. The composite films achieved excellent electrical and mechanical properties by optimizing the lab-synthesized PEDOT:PSS, dimethyl sulfoxide, and glycerol content in the CMC matrix. The optimized composite film exhibited a small increase of only 1.25-fold in relative resistance under 100% strain. The CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite film exhibited outstanding mechanical properties under cyclic tape attachment/detachment, bending, and stretching/releasing tests. The small changes in the relative resistance of the films under mechanical deformation indicated excellent electrical contacts between the conductive PEDOT:PSS in the CMC matrix, and strong bonding strength between CMC and PEDOT:PSS. We fabricated highly stretchable and conformable on-skin sensors based on conductive and stretchable CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite films, which can sensitively monitor subtle bio-signals and human motions such as respiratory humidity, drinking water, speaking, skin touching, skin wrinkling, and finger bending. Because of the outstanding electrical properties of the films, the on-skin sensors can operate with a low power consumption of only a few microwatts. Our approach paves the way for the realization of low-power-consumption stretchable electronics using highly stretchable CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite films.

Liquids can be sculpted by spreading along predefined rough hydrophilic lanes surrounded by superhydrophobic backgrounds. We find that two distinct types of liquid spreading arise depending on the lane width. While only a fringe film wicks into the nanoroughness of very narrow lanes, a thick bulk film spreads along wide lanes. We theoretically analyze the spreading rates of films, which change power laws in the course of spreading, and corroborate the theory with experiments.

Capillary water bridges clogged in the holes of mesh-type fog harvesters have previously been considered only as a drawback because they decrease fog-harvesting yield by hindering airflow in front of the clogged mesh in the usual wind conditions. In this study, we show that the role of a clogged water bridge may not be entirely negative and can contribute to increased fog harvesting by increasing the effective shade coefficient in a special condition with high fog inertia. As the fog speed close to the mesh or the plate increases, clogged mesh as well as the impermeable solid plate are found to produce high fog-harvesting efficiency owing to the high inertia of fog particles that impact the blocked wall. For fast fog speeds (∼4 m s−1) near the mesh, our results show that the fog-harvesting efficiency is proportional to the effective shade coefficient because fog flow circumventing the mesh is limited owing to high fog inertia. We analyzed the clogging effect on fog-harvesting performance by distinguishing between self-clogging and non-self-clogging patterns based on the water bridge stability clogged in mesh holes.

The pitcher plant has evolved its hierarchically grooved peristome to enhance a water-based slippery system for capturing insects with oil-covered footpads. Based on this, we proposed a hierarchically porous oil scoop (HPOS) with capillary-induced oil peel-off ability for repeatable spilled oil recovery. As the HPOS scoops oil-water mixture, water passes through the hole while the oil is confined within a curved geometry. The filter in HPOS has three levels of porous structures; (1) 3D-printed mesh structure with sub-millimeter scale hole to filter out oil from an oil–water mixture, (2) internal micropore in fibers enhancing capillarity and water transport, (3) O2 plasma-induced high-aspect-ratio nanopillar structures imposing anti-oil-fouling property with capillary-induced oil peeling. As the oil-contaminated HPOS makes contact with water, water meniscus rises and peels off the oil immediately at the air-water interface. The oil-peel-off ability of the HPOS would prevent pores from clogging by oils for reuse. Smart surfaces in nature have been extensively studied to identify their hierarchical structures in micro-/nanoscale to elucidate their superhydrophobicity with varying water adhesion. However, mimicking hybrid features in multiscale requires complex, multi-step processes. Here, we proposed a one-step process for the fabrication of hierarchical structures composed in micro-/nanoscales for superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable water adhesion. Hierarchical patterns were fabricated using a plasma-based selective etching process assisted by a dual scale etching mask. As the metallic mesh is placed above the substrate, it serves the role of dual scale etching masks on the substrate: microscale masks to form the micro-wall network and nanoscale masks to form high-aspect-ratio nanostructures. The micro-walls and nanostructures can be selectively hybridized by adjusting the gap distance between the mesh and the target surface: single nanostructures on a large area for a larger gap distance and hybrid/hierarchical structures with nanostructures nested on micro-walls for a shorter gap distance. The hierarchically nanostructured surface shows superhydrophobicity with low water adhesion, while the hybrid structured surface becomes become superhydrophobic with high adhesion. These water adhesion tunable surfaces were explored for water transport and evaporation. Additionally, we demonstrated a robust superhydrophobic surface with anti-reflectance over a large area.

This study explored the optimum conditions to achieve superhydrophobicity in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in terms of crystallinity and microstructure. Surface superhydrophobicity was achieved by nanostructures induced by oxygen plasma etching and the recovery process of low surface energy through thermal aging of various PETs; semi-crystalline biaxial PET (B-PET) film, amorphous PET (A-PET) film, and semi-crystalline PET (F-PET) fabric. Under the anisotropic plasma etching, the nanostructures on the B-PET film were the longest, followed by the F-PET fabric, which developed a hierarchical micro/nanostructure, then the A-PET film. During thermal aging at 80 °C near Tg, the plasma-treated A-PET film recovered its superhydrophobicity within 3 h, while the plasma-treated B-PET film did not exhibit superhydrophobicity. At 130 °C, higher than Tg, the plasma-treated B-PET film recovered its superhydrophobicity within 1 h, but the plasma-treated A-PET film became opaque as its nanostructures deformed, decreasing its superhydrophobicity. The plasma-treated F-PET fabric exhibited faster recovery and greater superhydrophobicity than the plasma-treated B-PET film, due to its hierarchical micro/nanostructure. In addition, hydrophobic recovery during thermal aging was proved with a decrease in surface polar groups, lowering the surface energy using XPS analysis. Therefore, by designing the ratio of crystal to amorphous regions and surface micro/nanostructures, one can rapidly fabricate superhydrophobic PETs without additional surface finishing.

Two levels of nanostructures, consisting of slanted nanostructure and nanogroove, were fabricated on polymeric surface through a single step oxygen plasma processing with tuning incident angles. A polymeric sheet embedded with the SiO2 nanospheres was exposed to the oxygen plasma through Faraday cages to induce anisotropic etching. The nanopillars were slanted by changing the relative angle between plasma ions and polymer substrate from 10 to 80°. The nanogrooves were also formed among the slanted nanopillars along the trajectory of plasma ions. Together with the nanogrooves, the slanted nanopillars enhanced unidirectional water spreading. The wetting behaviors, with gradual transformation through four stages with different degree of hydrophilicity (super-, strong, moderate, and mild hydrophilicity), were observed. The surface with moderate hydrophilicity showed strong asymmetric wetting for unidirectional water spreading, against the gravity force, at very high velocity (up to 1.5 ∼ 4.17 mm/sec). This easy and simple fabrication method of slanted nanostructures could be utilized in a wide range of applications requiring long-lasting hydrophilicity with asymmetric wetting, such as, microfluidic, oil–water separation, water-harvesting, and biomedicines.

Drug-eluting stents (DESs) are used to treat cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. The anti-proliferative drug released from the DES suppress the proliferation of smooth muscle cells and reduced in-stent restenosis. However, a burst release of the drug in the early stages and degradation morphology of the polymer coating represent major disadvantages, which might increase the incidence of in-stent restenosis and/or thrombosis under in vivo clinical studies. To solve these problems, in this study, a double-layer coating system composed of poly(lactide) (PLLA) bottom layer and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) top layer are used for the fabrication of DES. PLLA bottom layer was firstly coated on the metal surface followed by oxygen ion beam treatment. It was found that increasing the ion beam exposure time, increased the roughness of PLLA surface with a nanoscale pocket (or hole)-like structure. The top layer coating represented a mixture of PLGA and paclitaxel (PTX) with 5, 10, and 20% PTX contents. The coating was performed through ultrasonic spray technique, and the morphology showed not only a smooth and uniform surface but also no irregularities were observed at zero day. The drug release and degradation morphology for single-layer (PLGA/PTX) and double-layer (PLLA/PLGA/PTX) coatings were compared. The drug release from the double-layer stainless steel (SS) group showed a slower and controlled drug release for all PTX content samples as compared to single-layer SS group. Moreover, the degradation morphology of double-layer SS group presented a smoother and uniform surface after 12 weeks of degradation under physiological conditions. Therefore, an oxygen ion beam technique with double-layer coating system could effectively control the drug release, i.e., prevent initial burst drug release, and improve the degradation morphology of biodegradable polymer-based DESs.

Purpose Despite the rapid development of fused deposition modeling (FDM), the insufficient mechanical strength of the printed objects is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for practical applications. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to emphasize on the importance of homogeneous heating condition and heating effect in the improvement of the mechanical strength of objects. Design/methodology/approach The authors first analyze the problem of the present heating system under a heating bed and chamber by using a commonly used home FDM printer. Next, they investigate the heating effect on the mechanical properties of FDM-printed objects in terms of layer thickness, heating duration and additional pressure with heating. The printed objects are treated in a mold by forced convection heating. Findings As the layer thickness decreases, the mechanical performance of the FDM-printed objects is remarkably enhanced by thermal heating because of the result of strong interfacial bonding among the rasters and layers. In addition, longer heating duration and higher external pressure play pivotal roles in the mechanical performance by reducing voids in the internal structure of the printed objects, leading to high densification and complete filling at the interfaces. Originality/value The present findings, for the first time, show that controlling uniform heat transfer is highly important for the mechanical performance of FDM three-dimensional printed objects. The authors suggest that the future developed home or personal FDM types should consider the homogeneous temperature environment during the printing process by properly heating the inside chamber. In addition, the results indicate the effectiveness of heating and pressure treatment to the objects for the reinforced mechanical performance and better surface finish.

Carbon-encapsulated gold nanoparticles (CEGNs) were synthesized by plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering using C2H2 and Ar mixtures as the precursor. The morphology, microstructure and optical property of the CEGNs were characterized using TEM, SEM, and UV–Vis absorption spectrum. The results show that the gold NPs with narrow size distribution ranging from 7 nm to 20 nm were encapsulated by amorphous carbon nanospheres. The fraction of C2H2 in the gas mixture of C2H2 and Ar seemed to have a significant influence on the gold particle size and distribution of the as-made CEGNs. As the fraction of the C2H2 increased from 5% to 10%, the average particle size decreased from about 13 nm to 7 nm and the carbon nanospheres with single gold NPs core evolved to the carbon chain with multi-cores. In addition, carbon-encapsulated silver nanoparticles (CESNs) were also prepared by the same method. This indicates that the plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering may be one of the best ways for the deposition of the carbon-encapsulated metal nanoparticles (CEMNs). The UV–Vis absorption spectra of the CEGNs and CESNs reveal strong absorption bands due to the surface plasma resonance of the nanoparticles, implying that the as-made CEMNs could be applied in optical limiting devices.

High-aspect-ratio nanostructures formed on a transparent polymer can be easily damaged after several cycles of anti-fogging testing, resulting in a reduction in optical transmittance. To ensure the robust wetting and optical properties of the transparent polycarbonate, we controlled the nanostructure geometries by adding the inert argon gas to oxygen gas during plasma-based selective ion etching process, resulting in both better transparency and longer-lasting anti-fogging properties. We confirmed that the size of the metallic clusters as a self-etching mask is strongly related to the aspect ratio of the final nanostructures. Since metallic clusters with relatively large diameters were formed with the addition of argon gas to oxygen gas, the robustness of the polycarbonate wettability and transparency instilled by the robust nanostructures was improved, as indicated by cyclic anti-fogging testing.

A voidless Cu/PET substrate is fabricated by producing a superhydrophilic PET surface comprised of nanostructures with large width and height and then by Cu electroless plating. Effect of PET surface nanostructure size on the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET substrate is studied. The fabricated Cu/PET substrate exhibits a maximum peel strength of 1300 N m −1 without using an interlayer, and virtually no increase in electrical resistivity under the extreme cyclic bending condition of 1 mm curvature radius after 300 k cycles. The authors find that there is an optimum nanostructure size for the highest Cu/PET adhesion strength, and the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET flexible substrate depends on the PET surface nanostructure size. Thus, this work presents the possibility to produce flexible metal/polymer electronic substrates that have excellent interfacial adhesion between the metal and polymer and high fatigue resistance against repeated bending. Such metal/polymer substrates provides new design opportunities for wearable electronic devices that can withstand harsh environments and have extended lifetimes.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a promising alternative transparent electrode to replace conventional indium tix oxide (ITO) for flexible and stretchable electronics. For their applications in optoelectronic devices, realizing both high conductivity and transmittance for the films is of great necessity as a suitable high performance transparent electrode. Here, we demonstrate simultaneously enhanced electrical and optical properties of PEDOT:PSS films prepared on chitosan bio-substrates by using an organic surface modifier, 11-aminoundecanoic acid (11-AA). The sheet resistance of PEDOT:PSS films decreases from 1120.8 to 292.8 Ω/sq with an increase in a transmittance from 75.9 to 80.4% by 11-AA treatment on the chitosan films. The functional groups of 11-AA effectively enhance the adhesion property at the interface between the chitosan substrate and PEDOT:PSS by forming strong interfacial bondings and decrease insulating PSS from PEDOT:PSS films. The wearable heater devices and on-skin sensors based on the 11-AA-treated PEDOT:PSS on the chitosan bio-substrates are successfully fabricated, showing the excellent thermal and sensing performances. The 11-AA surface-modification approach for highly conductive PEDOT:PSS on chitosan bio-substrates presents a great potential for applications toward transparent, flexible and stretchable electronics.

Nanostructured transparent glass surfaces with self-cleaning and anti-fogging properties were fabricated using a non-lithographic, anisotropic etching technique. The superhydrophilic glass surface was achieved by nanostructuring pre-deposited SiO2 film in a glow discharge chamber. For superhydrophobicity, the surface energy of the nanostructured glass was lowered by treatment with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl trichlorosilane. The self-cleaning and anti-fogging behavior was compared for glasses with different wettabilities by measuring the optical transmittance as well as the surface morphology and contact angles. In measuring the anti-fogging behavior, we included the effects of air flow impinging on the glass surface to emulate many practical situations. The superhydrophobic glass was superior to the superhydrophilic glass when considering both the self-cleaning and anti-fogging behavior with durability, particularly under air flow. The work can be used to fabricate transparent glass products for which minimizing surface contamination is crucial, e.g., eyeglasses, solar cells, and optical instruments.

A one-step maskless oxygen plasma etching process is investigated to nanopattern conjugated polymer dodecylbenzenesulfonate doped polypyrrole (PPy(DBS)) and to examine the effects of nanostructures on the inherent tunable wettability of the surface and the droplet mobility. Etching characteristics such as the geometry and dimensions of the nanostructures are systematically examined for the etching power and duration. The mechanism of self-formation of vertically aligned dense-array pillared nanostructures in the one-step maskless oxygen plasma etching process is also investigated. Results show that lateral dimensions such as the periodicity and diameter of the pillared nanostructures are insensitive to the etching power and duration, whereas the length and aspect ratio of the nanostructures increase with them. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and thermal treatment of the polymer reveal that the codeposition of impurities on the surface resulting from the holding substrate is the primary reason for the self-formation of nanostructures during the oxygen plasma etching, whereas the local crystallinity subject to thermal treatment has a minor effect on the lateral dimensions. Retaining the tunable wettability (oleophobicity) for organic droplets during the electrochemical redox (i.e., reduction and oxidization) process, the nanotextured PPy(DBS) surface shows significant enhancement of droplet mobility compared to that of the flat PPy(DBS) surface with no nanotexture by making the surface superoleophobic (i.e., in a Cassie-Baxter wetting state). Such enhancement of the tunable oleophobicity and droplet mobility of the conjugated polymer will be of great significance in many applications such as microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip devices, and water/oil treatment.

We have examined a potential new and simple method for patterning a copper circuit on PET substrate by copper electroless plating, without the pretreatment steps (i.e., sensitization and activation) for electroless plating as well as the etching processes of conventional circuit patterning. A patterned mask coated with a catalyst material, Ag, for the reduction of Cu ions, is placed on a PET substrate. Subsequent oxygen plasma treatment of the PET substrate covered with the mask promotes the selective generation of anisotropic pillar- or hair-like nanostructures coated with co-deposited nanoparticles of the catalyst material on PET. After oxygen plasma treatment, a Cu circuit is well formed just by dipping the plasma-treated PET into a Cu electroless plating solution. By increasing the oxygen gas pressure in the chamber, the height of the nanostructures increases and the Ag catalyst particles are coated on not only the top but also the side surfaces of the nanostructures. Strong mechanical interlocking between the Cu circuit and PET substrate is produced by the large surface area of the nanostructures, and enhances peel strength. Results indicate this new simple two step (plasma surface modification and pretreatment-free electroless plating) method can be used to produce a flexible Cu circuit with good adhesion.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been fabricated for several applications in clothing, biomedical and engineering fields. However, the durability of the nanostructure itself and the over-coating can be easily damaged during usage by deformation and delamination, respectively. Herein, a robust method to fabricate a superhydrophobic fabric with durable mechanical and chemical properties with a thermally enhanced hydrophobic ageing process is reported. A superhydrophobic PET fabric with a static contact angle of over 160° is fabricated by selective oxygen plasma etching, followed by a heating process, i.e. non-chemical finishing. XPS and XRD analysis indicate that a quick hydrophobic ageing occurred due to the reorientation of the PET polymer chains and an increase in newly formed crystallites on the PET surface after the thermal process. Water vapor transmission rate as well as air permeability of the plasma-etched and heated PET fabric sustain similar levels as those of untreated PET fabrics. In addition, the superhydrophobic PET fabric shows strong durability for washing, mechanical robustness and self-cleaning ability even after the surface nanostructures' damage. Thermal hydrophobic ageing process for nanostructured superhydrophobic textiles uses no chemicals for surface finishing, which results in improved wearing comfort and human/environment friendliness, thus attracting attention from the textile or biomedical goods and related industries.

Single-atom catalysts are heterogeneous catalysts with atomistically dispersed atoms acting as a catalytically active center, and have recently attracted much attention owing to the minimal use of noble metals. However, a scalable and inexpensive support that can stably anchor isolated atoms remains a challenge due to high surface energy. Here, copper-halide polymer nanowires with sub-nanometer pores are proposed as a versatile support for single-atom catalysts. The synthesis of the nanowires is straightforward and completed in a few minutes. Well-defined sub-nanometer pores and a large free volume of the nanowires are advantageous over any other support material. The nanowires can anchor various atomistically dispersed metal atoms into the sub-nanometer pores up to ≈3 at% via a simple solution process, and this value is at least twice as big as previously reported data. The hydrogen evolution reaction activity of -18.0 A mgPt-1 at -0.2 V overpotential shows its potential for single-atom catalysts support.

Recently, various nanotechnologies have been utilized with regard to membrane modification due to their high activities and the low cost of the nanomaterials involved. In order to enhance the hydrophobicity of the membrane surface for membrane distillation applications by decreasing the surface energy, a radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) process is suggested with surface nanostructuring and a subsequent hydrophobic coating step. In this research, a commercial PVDF membrane was modified by plasma treatments with the two different gases of O 2 and CF 4 . The water contact angles of the active layers increased from 73 to 117 and 101° and the fluxes of the treated membranes increased to 63 and 27.9% as compared to a virgin PVDF membrane when the feed used was D.I. water by the O 2 and CF 4 plasma modifications, respectively. Defluorination at the long exposure time (120 min) of the plasma treatment and increase of the overall hydrophobicity (the decrease of the contact angle hysteresis) by the HMDSO coating were the reasons of the flux variations for the plasma modified membranes.

Hemiwicking refers to the spreading of a liquid on a rough hydrophilic surface driven by capillarity. Here, we construct scaling laws to predict the velocity of hemiwicking on a rough substrate and experimentally corroborate them with various arrangements and dimensions of micropillar arrays. At the macroscopic scale, where the wetting front appears parallel to the free surface of the reservoir, the wicking distance is shown to grow diffusively, i.e. like $t^{1/2}$ with $t$ being time. We show that our model is consistent with pillar arrays of a wide range of pitch-to-height ratios, either square or skewed. At the microscopic scale, where the meniscus extension from individual pillars at the wetting front is considered, the extension distance begins to grow like $t$ but the spreading slows down to behave like $t^{1/3}$ when the meniscus is far from the pillar. Our microscopic flow modelling allows us to find pillar spacing conditions under which the assumption of densely spaced pillars is valid.

This study investigated moisture management properties of a single-faced superhydrophobic fabric. A single-faced superhydrophobic lyocell fabric, where one face of the surface is superhydrophobic and the opposite face is hydrophilic, was produced by a two-step plasma process on one side of the fabric: (1) the addition of nano-scale roughness by 5 minutes of O2 plasma etching; (2) subsequent 30 seconds of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition with hexamethyldisiloxane to lower the surface energy of lyocell fibers. As a result, the superhydrophobic lyocell fabric exhibited water repellency with a static water contact angle greater than 161° on the treated surface, allowing water absorption from the untreated face. The nanometer depth of the superhydrophobic layer in the hydrophilic textile affected water absorption capacity, drying rate, vertical wicking rate, and moisture management properties. The air permeability and water vapor transmission rate of the superhydrophobic treated lyocell fabric were hardly changed. The superhydrophobic properties were maintained after a gentle wash cycle, although the level of superhydrophobicity was reduced, especially when it was washed with detergent. This superhydrophobic and moisture managing textile would be relevant for an application that requires a water repellent property on one face and water absorbing property on the opposite face, such as medical operation gowns, wound dressings, and hygienic products.

As the importance of visual aids increases, textbooks are including more figures and images to help with students' understanding. These visual aids enable students to learn concepts more effectively by hearing and seeing them simultaneously. However, for students who are visually impaired (that is, blind or have low vision), reading and understanding a textbook poses challenges. Teachers of students who are visually impaired have difficulty teaching with textbooks because they are compelled to explain and describe the complex figures and content verbally. Even after being explained, the image or concept might still remain nebulous for the student. Therefore, to help both students and their teachers, instructional materials should be prepared with easy, cheap, and customizable methods such as three-dimensional (3D) printing. Instead of seeing and hearing, students can use their sense of touch to recognize the 3D tactile aids, which might improve their learning and memory processes. Recently, 3D printing technology has emerged as an exciting technological tool for creating sophisticated and custom-made objects with relatively low-cost materials (Melchels, Feijen, & Grijpma, 2010; Peltola, Melchels, Grijpma, & Kellomaki, 2008; Pham & Gault, 1998). 3D printing is the process of fabricating 3D objects by building up materials layer by layer with a specific layer thickness in the range of 100 to 400 micrometers (^m). The most important advantage of 3D printing is its ability to build new objects in a customized way. Thus, 3D printing can be a powerful tool to make tactile patterns or objects related to textbooks. Stangl et al. tried to make 3D-printed picture books for visually impaired children (Stangl, Kim, & Yeh, 2014). They transcribed the images of the classic book Goodnight Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown, by printing features with different plastic layers. However, this study presented only plane-based shapes and not complete 3D objects. In this research, we investigate how 3D printing technology could be utilized for instructional materials that allow visually impaired students to have full access to high-quality instruction in history class. Researchers from the 3D Printing Group of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) provided the Seoul National School for the Blind with tactile instructional materials and resizable braille made by 3D printers as shown in Figure 1. The teacher provided side-by-side hands-on instruction to guide students in understanding the characteristics of the shapes and their meanings. Students also used their hands to independently explore the 3D materials, allowing them to appropriately feel the historical pictures, maps, or relics. This procedure reinforced delivery of the lecture immensely since it clarified potential misunderstanding of text descriptions. The resulting implication was that the 3D instructional materials were beneficial and more suitable to help visually impaired students successfully comprehend content taught in the classroom. METHODS Three different types of 3D printing methods were utilized: (1) fused deposition modeling (FDM); (2) three-dimensional printing (3DP); and (3) digital light processing (DLP). The 3D printing process involves multiple stages, as shown in Figure 2. All 3D printing techniques are based on the use of computer-aided design (CAD) information that describes the geometry and size of the objects to be printed. The CAD data is converted to an STL (STereoLithography) file format which has extensive triangular coordination of 3D surface geometry (Chen, Ng, & Wang, 1999). Once the file is in a printable format, the 3D model is sliced into a series of digital crosssectional layers of specific thickness. Then the designed structure is built through a layerby-layer fabrication process with each layer thickness being 100 |m.
