BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a major driver of heterotopic ossification (HO), a condition of abnormal bone growth in a site that is not normally mineralized. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will examine recent findings on the roles of inflammation and the immune system in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). FOP is a genetic condition of aggressive and progressive HO formation. We also examine how inflammation may be a valuable target for the treatment of HO. Rationale/Recent findings: Multiple lines of evidence indicate a key role for the immune system in driving FOP pathogenesis. Critical cell types include macrophages, mast cells, and adaptive immune cells, working through hypoxia signaling pathways, stem cell differentiation signaling pathways, vascular regulatory pathways, and inflammatory cytokines. In addition, recent clinical reports suggest a potential role for immune modulators in the management of FOP. FUTURE PERSPECTIVES: The central role of inflammatory mediators in HO suggests that the immune system may be a common target for blocking HO in both FOP and non-genetic forms of HO. Future research focusing on the identification of novel inflammatory targets will help support the testing of potential therapies for FOP and other related conditions.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign, self-limiting, and nonneoplastic lesion involving the skeletal muscle or soft tissue, rarely occurring in the head and neck. It is relatively rare in clinical practice, and it is difficult to distinguish specific cases from musculoskeletal conditions, which poses unique challenges for clinical diagnosis and treatment. We reported that a 9-year-old boy suffered from local and nontraumatic MO of the trapezius muscle. Given the rarity of this case, the present article detailed the diagnosis and treatment of this rare case and reviewed the relevant literature on MO, focusing on the clinical, pathological, and radiographic characteristics of MO. Myositis ossificans (MO) is characterized by benign heterotopic ossificans in soft tissues like muscles, which can be classified into nonhereditary MO and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Although MO has been studied for decades, no research reviewed and analyzed the features of publications in this field quantitatively and qualitatively. Using bibliometrics tools (bibliometrix R package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace), we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 1280 articles regarding MO in the Web of Science Core Collection database from 1993 to 2022. The annual number of publications and related research areas in the MO field increased gradually in the past 20 years. The USA contributed the most percentage (42.58%) of articles. The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and the Journal Bone published the most articles among all institutions and journals. Kaplan FS and Shore EM from UPenn were the top two scholars who made the largest contributions to this field. Keyword analysis showed that research hotspots changed from traumatic MO and clinical management of MO to the genetic etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of FOP. This study can provide new insights into the research trends of MO and helps researchers grasp and determine future study directions more easily.

Myositis ossificans, a benign tumor composed of spindle cells and osteoblasts, can clinically and radiologically mimic osteosarcoma. While recognition and accurate diagnosis of myositis ossificans can be a challenge, this is critical as it may allow a conservative surgical approach to maximize functional outcomes. Herein, we present a patient with surface myositis ossificans confirmed genetically by the presence of COL1A1::USP6 gene fusion, along with a literature review. Due to the enhanced visualization of the bone matrix, computed tomography (CT) imaging may be a superior imaging modality to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Staged biopsies with samples obtained from the periphery and center of the lesions may allow pathologists to discern the zonal distribution histologically. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry fluorescence in situ hybridization and molecular testing can aid in the distinction of myositis ossificans from mimics. Because of their resemblance to other bone tumors, these cases of myositis ossificans highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach integrating clinical, radiologic, and pathologic analysis and involving serial imaging, sampling, and judicious use of ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular testing. Introduction: A soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst is an extremely rare tumor. The objective of the article is to present the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of a very unusual neoplasm of soft tissues. Case report: A 13-year-old male patient presented a painful, mobile, and rapidly growing mass on the posteromedial aspect of his left knee. Imaging studies revealed a mass that arose from the medial surface of the distal sartorius muscle, with extension to the subcutaneous fat tissue. It was a well-circumscribed solid tumor with a peripheral rim calcification on plain film, computerized tomography, and ultrasound (zonal phenomenon). On magnetic resonance imaging, a heterogenous mass on T1-weighted images (WI) and T2-WI was seen, with a peripheral hypointense rim in both sequences. An outstanding edema on T2-WI extending to the soft tissue and muscles of the medial compartment of the knee was detected. The mass was resected, and the "tumoral mimickers" histopathological and molecular (next-generation sequencing) diagnoses confirmed a soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst. A follow-up showed that the patient was free of disease 12 months after surgery. Conclusion: Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare tumor. Objectives: To evaluate the natural history and to highlight the possible masqueraders causing diagnostic delay and iatrogenic interventions in Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). Methods: Patient details with suspected FOP were retrieved from the patient registry from 2012 through 2021. Clinical records, X-rays, clinical photographs, and molecular testing results were captured. Follow-up was recorded where available. Results: A total of 16 patients with a clinical diagnosis of FOP were found. Twelve patients with both clinical and molecular records were included in this study. The median age of onset and diagnosis was 1.5 y and 6.5 y respectively with a median diagnostic delay of 3.5 y. The disease course was progressive in ten patients. Seven out of twelve patients were subjected to invasive procedures due to misdiagnosis, which exacerbated their disease progression. Conclusions: Clinical suspicion followed by molecular testing is straightforward for a confirmed diagnosis of FOP. It is not only diagnostic, cost-effective, and saves time but also avoids unnecessary interventions in these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Case: A 62-year-old woman receiving romosozumab for 3 months underwent extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) for lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis. From 1 week after surgery, she experienced gradually increasing pain from the right groin to the front of the thigh. Examination revealed ossifying myositis in bilateral psoas major muscles. Etidronate treatment was initiated, improving pain after 4 days. Computed tomography showed lesion disappearance by 3 months after surgery. Conclusion: We report a rare case of myositis ossificans in bilateral psoas major muscles following XLIF surgery, possibly influenced by intraoperative manipulation and romosozumab treatment. Introduction: Quadriceps contusion is a common injury in contact sports like football, rugby, and basketball, resulting from a direct blow to the anterior thigh. This causes muscle damage, bleeding, and inflammation. While often considered minor, poor management can lead to complications, delayed recovery, and impaired athletic performance. Purpose: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness and the role of orthobiologic treatments such as PRP in enhancing healing and functional recovery for a swift return to sport. Summary: Quadriceps contusion, resulting from direct trauma to the quadriceps muscle group, leads to hematoma formation and varying degrees of injury severity. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, often supported by ultrasound and MRI to assess the extent of muscle damage. Treatment is typically non-operative, involving rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, and a gradual return to activity. One significant complication is myositis ossificans, characterized by abnormal bone formation within the muscle, which can cause chronic pain and restricted movement. Recent advances, such as ultrasound-guided PRP injections, offer promising results by enhancing healing, relieving pain, and accelerating functional recovery. PRP therapy, particularly popular among athletes, promotes tissue repair by stimulating cell regeneration and reducing inflammation, helping speed up recovery and potentially lowering the risk of complications like myositis ossificans. Although preliminary evidence supports the effectiveness of PRP in helping athletes return to play sooner, more research is needed to validate its full impact on musculoskeletal injuries. Continued exploration of nonoperative treatment and rehabilitation protocols is also necessary to ensure optimal outcomes. Preventive strategies, including the use of protective gear and conditioning exercises to strengthen muscles, are critical in reducing the risk of injury and enhancing athletic performance.

A 36-year-old male had insidious onset pain and swelling in the left thigh without any relevant history of trauma, surgery, or familial causes. On clinical examination a bony mass was palpable in the left thigh and movements of the limb were quite painful to the patient. The mass became more prominent on adduction of the left hip. CT and MRI were strongly suggestive of Myositis ossificans of the adductor longus. Surgical removal of the bony mass of size 1.8 × 2.5 × 8.5cm was performed and the patient has recovered fully postoperatively. Such a presentation of well-circumscribed bony mass at a heterotopic location away from the large joints and without any relevant history for onset is worth mentioning adding to the novelty of the report.

Abstract Background This review aims to study the clinical characteristics, diagnostic results, treatments, and outcomes in patients with heterotopic ossification following COVID-19 infection. Methods A literature search for eligible articles was conducted using MEDLINE/Pubmed, Global Health, and Scopus databases (January 12th, 2023), including all case reports and case series from any country and language. The criteria for inclusion in this review were cases of COVID-19 infection subsequently developing heterotopic ossification. Results This systematic review analysed 15 reports (n = 20 patients) documenting cases of heterotopic ossification following COVID-19 infection. 80% of the patients were male, with a median age of 59 years. All patients required intensive care unit stay with an average duration of 48.5 days. Mechanical ventilation was necessary for all patients and 30% of them underwent tracheostomy. Common symptoms included stiffness and pain, most frequently affecting multiple locations (70%), with the hips and shoulders being predominantly involved. X-rays were the most commonly used imaging modality, followed by computed tomography. Although treatment was given, some of the patients continued to experience symptoms, particularly stiffness. Conclusion 20 patients who developed heterotopic ossification after COVID-19 have been reported, the majority of which had at least two independent risk factors for this condition. The link between those two clinical entities is therefore uncertain, requiring further investigation. It is nonetheless important to suspect heterotopic ossification in patients with severe COVID-19 infection, prolonged immobilisation, mechanical ventilation, who develop joint pain and stiffness, as this condition can significantly impact patients’ quality of life. Myositis ossificans is delineated and distinguished by the generation and deposition of cartilaginous and osseous soft tissues. It generally occurs in the lower extremities and is caused by direct trauma. During the different developmental stages of maturation, the lesion has different radiological appearances that can be confused with sarcomas. Here, we present the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented to the outpatient clinic with a painful mass in the lateral chest wall that had rapidly expanded and increased in size. The patient had no history of trauma. Chest computed tomography revealed an intramuscular mass in the lateral chest wall; postcontrast images demonstrated heterogeneous enhancement and peripheral calcification. The patient was then referred to our center for subsequent assessment and examinations. Pathological examination findings confirmed the diagnosis of myositis ossificans. Surgical resection was performed after obtaining patient consent. The symptoms experienced by the patient were successfully relieved, and no evidence of recurrence was observed during the 2-year follow-up period. Knowledge of the atypical locations of myositis ossificans, calcification patterns at different stages, and radiopathological correlations can help accurately diagnose myositis ossificans and avoid unnecessary medical imaging and interventions.

FOP is a rare genetic condition, described mainly in man and cats, characterized by progressive, painful debilitation and shortened lifespan. A 10-month-old neutered male Savannah cat was referred for progressive gait abnormalities and multifocal firm masses within the soft-tissues that were unresponsive to previous treatment. Diagnosis of FOP was based on histopathological evaluation of intralesional biopsies, which revealed osteo-cartilaginous metaplasia and fibrocellular proliferation with intralesional chondrogenesis and endochondral ossification. The cat was managed with 5 mg/kg BID enrofloxacin and hydrotherapy for 3 years until acute death. During that three-year period, the cat displayed consistent improvement in endurance, quality of life, and range of motion. Postmortem histopathology further confirmed the diagnosis of FOP via identification of intramuscular and intra-fascial ossification with lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, degeneration, and regeneration of adjacent myocytes. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of long-term enrofloxacin treatment and hydrotherapy for the management of FOP in a cat, leading to improved mobility and survival time, and the first report of FOP in an exotic breed cat.

AbstractAltered bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is associated with many musculoskeletal diseases. However, it remains unknown whether BMP dysfunction has direct contribution to debilitating pain reported in many of these disorders. Here, we identified a novel neuropathic pain phenotype in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare autosomal-dominant musculoskeletal disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification. Ninety-seven percent of these patients carry an R206H gain-of-function point mutation in the BMP type I receptor ACVR1 (ACVR1 R206H ), which causes neofunction to Activin A and constitutively activates signaling through phosphorylated SMAD1/5/8. Although patients with FOP can harbor pathological lesions in the peripheral and central nervous system, their etiology and clinical impact are unclear. Quantitative sensory testing of patients with FOP revealed significant heat and mechanical pain hypersensitivity. Although there was no major effect of ACVR1 R206H on differentiation and maturation of nociceptive sensory neurons (iSNs) derived from FOP induced pluripotent stem cells, both intracellular and extracellular electrophysiology analyses of the ACVR1 R206H iSNs displayed ACVR1-dependent hyperexcitability, a hallmark of neuropathic pain. Consistent with this phenotype, we recorded enhanced responses of ACVR1 R206H iSNs to TRPV1 and TRPA1 agonists. Thus, activated ACVR1 signaling can modulate pain processing in humans and may represent a potential target for pain management in FOP and related BMP pathway diseases.

Functional leg length discrepancy results from soft tissue tightness or weakness across any joint in the lower extremity or spine. Herein, we present a 23-year-old female patient with leg length discrepancy due to a nontraumatic myositis ossificans (MO). Interpretation of the imaging findings is quite decisive in diagnosing soft tissue pathologies. It is particularly valid for MO to differentiate from other malignant or infectious lesions. There is no consensus on the treatment of nontraumatic MO. Although there are studies stating the contrary, surgical interventions should be considered as second option for patients who failed with nonsurgical treatments such as physical therapy. Macrophages play crucial roles in many human disease processes. However, obtaining large numbers of primary cells for study is often difficult. We describe 2D and 3D methods for directing human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into macrophages (iMACs). iMACs generated in 2D culture showed functional similarities to human primary monocyte-derived M2-like macrophages, and could be successfully polarized into a M1-like phenotype. Both M1- and M2-like iMACs showed phagocytic activity and reactivity to endogenous or exogenous stimuli. In contrast, iMACs generated by a 3D culture system showed mixed M1- and M2-like functional characteristics. 2D-iMACs from patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), an inherited disease with progressive heterotopic ossification driven by inflammation, showed prolonged inflammatory cytokine production and higher Activin A production after M1-like polarization, resulting in dampened responses to additional LPS stimulation. These results demonstrate a simple and robust way of creating hiPSC-derived M1- and M2-like macrophage lineages, while identifying macrophages as a source of Activin A that may drive heterotopic ossification in FOP.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder that leads to heterotopic ossification (HO), resulting in progressive restriction of physical function. In this study, low-dose, whole-body computed tomography (WBCT) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were evaluated to determine the preferred method for assessing total body burden of HO in patients with FOP. This was a non-interventional, two-part natural history study in patients with FOP (NCT02322255; date of registration: December 2014). In Part A (described here), WBCT and DXA scans were individually assessed for HO presence and severity across 15 anatomical regions. All images were independently reviewed by an expert imaging panel. Ten adult patients were enrolled across four sites. The sensitivity to HO presence and severity varied considerably between the two imaging modalities, with WBCT demonstrating HO in more body regions than DXA (76/138 [55%] versus 47/113 [42%]) evaluable regions). Inability to evaluate HO presence, due to overlapping body regions (positional ambiguity), occurred less frequently by WBCT than by DXA (mean number of non-evaluable regions per scan 1.2 [standard deviation: 1.5] versus 2.4 [1.4]). Based on the increased sensitivity and decreased positional ambiguity of low-dose WBCT versus DXA in measuring HO in patients with FOP, low-dose WBCT was chosen as the preferred imaging for measuring HO. Therefore, low-dose WBCT was carried forward to Part B of the natural history study, which evaluated disease progression over 36 months in a larger population of patients with FOP.

IntroductionCircumscribed or pseudomalignant myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare and benign condition characterized by heterotopic bone formation in soft tissues. The clinical presentation of MO, imaging investigations, histological findings, and treatment strategies are unclear, especially in the pediatric population.Materials and methodsA literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar electronic databases to identify original articles and reviews in English or French of traumatic and non-traumatic MO. Studies were selected by 2 independent reviewers following the PRISMA recommendation and descriptive data were extracted. We harvest in each case the sex, age at diagnosis, location, presence of initial trauma, pre-emptive diagnosis, modalities of imagery used, realized biopsy, treatment performed, and type of follow-up.ResultsSixty pediatric cases of MO were identified between 2002 and 2023. Twenty-three patients (38.3%) were diagnosed with idiopathic/pseudomalignant and 37 patients (61.7%) with circumscribed. The mean age at diagnosis was 9.5 years (range 0.2–17 years), with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1. The initial pre-emptive diagnosis was neoplasia in 13 patients (21.7%). The biopsy was percutaneous in 9 patients (15%) and incisional in 7 patients (11.7%). Histological analysis was achieved in 35 cases (57%). Surgical excision was the first line treatment in 46.7% of patients, and non-surgical in the remaining patients. The follow-up strategy was clinical in 16 patients (26.7%) or based on imaging investigation in 23 patients (38.3%).DiscussionAlthough MO in children is described as a rare pathology, identifying the benignity of the condition is essential to avoid unnecessary invasive treatment and to avoid delaying the treatment of a potentially life-threatening entity. It seems that there is no consensus established concerning the proper imaging for diagnosis. Clinicians should acknowledge that the absence of a triggering trauma tends to direct the investigation and the management toward a surgical attitude. Conservative management is key, however, surgical excision can be proposed on matured lesions on a case-by-case basis. The absence of recurrence is not excluded. Therefore, a close clinical follow-up is suggested for all cases. The true benefit of a radiological is questioned in a question known to be self-resolving.

Periosteal fasciitis is a subtype of nodular fasciitis originating from the periosteum. The diagnosis can be challenging and requires radiologic–pathologic correlation. Advances in molecular analysis confirmed that nodular fasciitis and its related lesions harbor a USP6 gene rearrangement with one of the several potential partners. Herein, we report a case of periosteal fasciitis with metaplastic bone formation detected incidentally during a radiologic survey for breast carcinoma. Radiologic examination revealed a 2.4 cm, heterogeneous, avidly enhancing lesion of the right femoral distal metaphysis concerning for low-grade periosteal chondrosarcoma. Histological examination of a core needle biopsy revealed a tumor composed of bland spindle cells with myofibroblastic and osteoblastic phenotypes admixed with immature bone and cartilaginous elements. Molecular analysis revealed a novel STAG1::USP6 fusion that helped arrive at the right diagnosis and further expands the molecular profile of USP6 -associated neoplasms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myositis ossificans is non-neoplastic heterotopic bone forms in skeletal muscle. We recognize 3 subtypes: fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, myositis ossificans with no history of trauma (nontraumatic or pseudomalignant), and circumscribed or traumatic myositis ossificans. Traumatic myositis ossificans circumscripta has not, as far as we are aware, been previously documented as a complication of traumatic hip dislocation. We present the radiological findings of a 10-year-old girl with Thevenards syndrome, whose traumatic hip dislocation was complicated by circumstantial myositis ossificans. X-rays and computed tomography scan enabled us to diagnose by the presence of mature bone in the periphery of the lesion with a smooth contour and well separated from the bone. The treatment of dislocation and complication was nonoperatively.

Introduction: Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign, ossifying, self-limited lesion that most commonly occurs in limb musculature secondary to trauma and may cause pain, stiffness, pressure sores, or decreased range of motion. The purpose of this study is to perform microstructural analysis of myositis ossificans and determine the biomechanical impact on the adductor longus (AL) muscle. Materials and methods: In situ radiographic imaging was performed prior to additional dissection, visualization, measurement, and photography of the AL and MO. Subsequently, the MO was removed for micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. Tissue parameters were used to calculate physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) and maximal isometric force (Fmax) of the AL and determine the functional impact of the MO on the AL. Results: On in situ imaging, the MO appeared radio-dense along its perimeter and lucent at its core. AL morphology and attachments were typical. MO microarchitecture parameters and histology revealed low bone volume; decreased structural integrity; and lamellar bone formation with mature osteocytes, lacunae, and functional osteons. The MO occupied approximately 25.79% of the AL and decreased AL's Fmax from 112.726 N to 83.654 N and torque on the femur from 972.221 N·cm to 721.486 N ​cm. Conclusions: The combination of gross, radiographic, histomorphometric, histological, and biomechanical findings suggest a mature MO traumatica resulting in a functional deficit of the AL. This report may benefit healthcare providers evaluating soft tissue masses as well as bone and mineral scientists and medical educators when presented with similar research or educational cases.

BackgroundFibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare disorder marked by painful, recurrent flare-ups and heterotopic ossification (HO) in soft and connective tissues, which can be idiopathic or provoked by trauma, illness, inflammation, or surgery. There are currently no effective treatments for FOP, or for patients with FOP who must undergo surgery. Palovarotene, an investigational retinoic acid receptor-γ agonist, offers a potential avenue to prevent HO formation.Case presentationThe patient is a 32 year-old male, who at age 29 enrolled in a study evaluating palovarotene to prevent HO formation in FOP. One year after starting palovarotene, he fell resulting in a left intertrochanteric fracture. He underwent intramedullary nailing of the femur shaft with screw placement at the distal femur. After surgery, he received palovarotene at 20 mg/day for 4 weeks, then 10 mg/day for 8 weeks. Imaging 12 weeks after surgery showed new bridging HO at the site of intramedullary rod insertion and distal screw. Nine months after the left hip fracture, the patient had a second fall resulting in a subdural hematoma, left parietal bone fracture, and right intertrochanteric fracture. He underwent intramedullary nailing of the right hip, in a modified procedure which did not require distal screw placement. Palovarotene 20 mg/day was started at fracture occurrence and continued for 4 weeks, then reduced to 10 mg/day for 8 weeks. HO also formed near the insertion site of the intramedullary rod. No HO developed at the right distal intramedullary rod. After each fracture, the patient had prolonged recurrent flare-ups around the hips.ConclusionSurgery is only rarely considered in FOP due to the high risks of procedural complications and potential for inducing HO. This case emphasizes the risks of increased flare activity and HO formation from injury and surgery in patients with FOP. The efficacy of HO prevention by palovarotene could not be assessed; however, our observation that palovarotene can be administered in an individual with FOP following surgery with no negative impact on clinical fracture healing, osteointegration, or skin healing will help facilitate future trials testing the role of palovarotene as a therapy for HO.

Background. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a genetic disease of the heterotopic ossification group associated with the mutation in ACVR1/ALK2 gene. FOP is characterized by progressive heterotopic endochondral ossification of connective tissue that occurs in postnatal period. It leads to formation of qualitatively normal bone in extraskeletal areas. Congenital hallux deformity is typical for this disease. The clinical picture is characterized by aggravations that are usually caused by trauma or viral infections. Formation of Heterotopic ossificate formation can be observed during aggravations. There is no etiological treatment for FOP. Systemic glucocorticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), mast cell stabilisers, antileukotriene drugs and bisphosphonates can be used in these patients.Clinical case description. The child was born with congenital hallux deformity typical for FOP. The disease onset was noted at the age of 2 years 8 months with a tumor-like painful mass on the neck. Oncological (lymphoproliferative) disease was suspected but biopsy from the lesion did not confirm its malignant nature. The child was consulted by pediatric rheumatologist who has diagnosed FOP. Etanercept and zoledronic acid were administrated, though etanercept was later discontinued. For now, the child receives zoledronic acid infusions 2 times per year and daily NSAIDs.Conclusion. The difficulties in FOP diagnosing are associated to its sporadic nature and clinical picture similarity to other diseases. Suspected malignancy leads to biopsy that is highly undesirable in FOP patients due to high risk of iatrogenic complications.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign disorder where bone forms within muscles or other soft tissues. This condition usually follows trauma and is rare in pediatric patients. Here we present the case of a 2-year-old male who developed MO of his right elbow without obvious trauma to the area. Imaging of MO in the initial phase is highly unspecific and obtaining tissue samples through a biopsy can render misleading reports. In most cases MO is a self-limited process with complete resolution, however, some cases may present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.
