Nowadays, social media is the ground for political debate and exchange of opinions. There is a significant amount of research that suggests that social media are highly polarized. A phenomenon that is commonly observed is the echo chamber structure, where users are organized in polarized communities and form connections only with similar-minded individuals, limiting themselves to consume specific content. In this paper we explore a way to decrease the polarization of networks with two echo chambers. Particularly, we observe that if some users adopt a moderate opinion about a topic, the polarization of the network decreases. Based on this observation, we propose an efficient algorithm to identify a good set of K users, such that if they adopt a moderate stance around a topic, the polarization is minimized. Our algorithm employs a Graph Neural Network and thus it can handle large graphs more effectively than other approaches

Optical sensing technologies are emerging technologies used in cancer surgeries to ensure the complete removal of cancerous tissue. While point-wise assessment has many potential applications, incorporating automated large area scanning would enable holistic tissue sampling. However, such scanning tasks are challenging due to their long-horizon dependency and the requirement for fine-grained motion. To address these issues, we introduce Memorized Action Chunking with Transformers (MACT), an intuitive yet efficient imitation learning method for tissue surface scanning tasks. It utilizes a sequence of past images as historical information to predict near-future action sequences. In addition, hybrid temporal-spatial positional embeddings were employed to facilitate learning. In various simulation settings, MACT demonstrated significant improvements in contour scanning and area scanning over the baseline model. In real-world testing, with only 50 demonstration trajectories, MACT surpassed the baseline model by achieving a 60-80% success rate on all scanning tasks. Our findings suggest that MACT is a promising model for adaptive scanning in surgical settings.

Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. In this paper we study the problem of shape part retrieval in the point cloud domain. Shape retrieval methods in the literature rely on the presence of an existing query object, but what if the part we are looking for is not available? We present Part Retrieval Pipeline (PReP), a pipeline that creatively utilizes metric learning techniques along with a trained classification model to measure the suitability of potential replacement parts from a database, as part of an application scenario targeting circular economy. Through an innovative training procedure with increasing difficulty, it is able to learn to recognize suitable parts relying only on shape context. Thanks to its low parameter size and computational requirements, it can be used to sort through a warehouse of potentially tens of thousand of spare parts in just a few seconds. We also establish an alternative baseline approach to compare against, and extensively document the unique challenges associated with this task, as well as identify the design choices to solve them.

Interpretability is a topic that has been in the spotlight for the past few years. Most existing interpretability techniques produce interpretations in the form of rules or feature importance. These interpretations, while informative, may be harder to understand for non-expert users and therefore, cannot always be considered as adequate explanations. To that end, explanations in natural language are often preferred, as they are easier to comprehend and also more presentable to end-users. This work introduces an early concept for a novel pipeline that can be used in text classification tasks, offering predictions and explanations in natural language. It comprises of two models: a classifier for labelling the text and an explanation generator which provides the explanation. The proposed pipeline can be adopted by any text classification task, given that ground truth rationales are available to train the explanation generator. Our experiments are centred around the tasks of sentiment analysis and offensive language identification in Greek tweets, using a Greek Large Language Model (LLM) to obtain the necessary explanations that can act as rationales. In this paper, we introduce a synergistic approach between artificial intelligence and system operators through an innovative digital twin architecture, integrated with an active learning framework, to enhance short-term load forecasting. Central to this architecture is the incorporation of sophisticated data pipelines, facilitating the real-time ingestion, processing and analysis of grid-related data. Utilizing a recurrent neural network architecture, our model generates day-ahead load forecasts together with prediction confidence intervals, strengthening system operator trust in the model's predictive reliability and enhancing their ability to respond to evolving grid conditions effectively. The active learning framework iteratively refines the predictions by incorporating real-time feedback based on forecast uncertainty, utilizing newly available data to continuously enhance forecasting accuracy and confidence. This AI-assisted strategy is exemplified in a case study of the Greek transmission system. It demonstrates the potential to transform short-term load forecasting, thereby increasing the reliability and operational efficiency of modern power grids. This approach marks a significant step forward in the digitalization and intelligent management of power systems.

This study explores the interaction between aggregators and building occupants in activating flexibility through Demand Response (DR) programs, with a focus on reinforcing the resilience of the energy system considering the uncertainties presented by Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Firstly, it introduces a methodology of optimizing aggregated flexibility provision strategies in environments with limited data, utilizing Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) and clustering techniques to identify building occupants' activity patterns. Secondly, the study assesses the disaggregated flexibility provision of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems during DR events, employing machine learning and optimization techniques for precise, device-level analysis. The first approach offers a non-intrusive pathway for aggregators to provide flexibility services in environments of a single smart meter for the whole building's consumption, while the second approach maximizes the amount of flexibility in the case of dedicated metering devices to the HVAC systems by carefully considering building occupants' thermal comfort profiles. Through the application of data-driven techniques and encompassing case studies from both industrial and residential buildings, this paper not only unveils pivotal opportunities for aggregators in the balancing and emerging flexibility markets but also successfully develops and demonstrates end-to-end practical tools for aggregators.

The following technical report provides background information relating to four CVEs found in the following products: Ultraloq UL3 BT (CVE-2022-46480); Yale Conexis L1 Smart Lock (CVE-2023-26941); Yale IA-210 Intruder Alarm (CVE-2023-26942); Yale Keyless Smart Lock (CVE-2023-26943). The work discussed here was carried out by Ash Allen, Dr. Alexios Mylonas, and Dr. Stilianos Vidalis as part of a wider research project into smart device security. Responsible disclosure of all four issues has been made with the appropriate vendors, and they have been acknowledged as vulnerabilities.

Intelligent Transport Systems are crucial in the digital transformation of transportation. The EC mandates the establishment of National Access Points (NAPs) in each Member State, serving as common national interfaces for ITS data exchange. While progress has been made in standardizing NAP data, integration with operational ITS practices remain limited. This paper presents five NAP use cases from the NAPCORE (National Access Point Coordination Organization for Europe) CEF funded project. The first one outlines a National Virtual Traffic Management Center offering real time visualized KPIs supporting motorway traffic operations. The second focuses on NAP enabled Cooperative ITS and dynamic traffic management services. Next use case involves a Pan European interface, providing visualizations of data availability. The fourth use case enhances the digitization of traffic management plans, among different TMC. Finally, the fifth use case demonstrates a technical interface combining NAP traffic data with meteorological information for KPIs on extreme weather impacts on traffic., Comment: 6 pages

Monitoring noise pollution in urban areas in a more systematic manner has been gaining traction as a theme among the research community, especially with the rise of smart cities and the IoT. However, although it affects our everyday life in a profound way, monitoring indoor noise levels inside workplaces and public buildings has so far grabbed less of our attention. In this work, we report on noise levels data produced by an IoT infrastructure installed inside 5 school buildings in Greece. Virtual and augmented reality are currently enjoying a great deal of attention from the research community and the industry towards their adoption within industrial spaces and processes. However, the current design and implementation landscape is still very fluid, while the community as a whole has not yet consolidated into concrete design directions, other than basic patterns. Other open issues include the choice over a cloud or edge-based architecture when designing such systems. Within this work, we present our approach for a monitoring intervention inside a factory space utilizing both VR and AR, based primarily on edge computing, while also utilizing the cloud. We discuss its main design directions, as well as a basic ontology to aid in simple description of factory assets. Multi-target regression is useful in a plethora of applications. Although random forest models perform well in these tasks, they are often difficult to interpret. Interpretability is crucial in machine learning, especially when it can directly impact human well-being. Although model-agnostic techniques exist for multi-target regression, specific techniques tailored to random forest models are not available. To address this issue, we propose a technique that provides rule-based interpretations for instances made by a random forest model for multi-target regression, influenced by a recent model-specific technique for random forest interpretability. In this article, we investigate the model based position control of soft hydraulic actuators arranged in an antagonistic pair. A dynamical model of the system is constructed by employing the port-Hamiltonian formulation. A control algorithm is designed with an energy shaping approach which accounts for the pressure dynamics of the fluid. A nonlinear observer is included to compensate the effect of unknown external forces. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, and experiments achieve positioning accuracy of 0.043 mm with a standard deviation of 0.033 mm in the presence of constant external forces up to 1 N., Comment: Final Version of Paper, updated figures and discussion. Enabling dexterous manipulation and safe human-robot interaction, soft robots are widely used in numerous surgical applications. One of the complications associated with using soft robots in surgical applications is reconstructing their shape and the external force exerted on them. Several sensor-based and model-based approaches have been proposed to address the issue. In this paper, a shape sensing technique based on Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is proposed. The performance of this sensing technique in predicting the tip position and contact force of a soft bending actuator is highlighted by conducting a series of empirical tests. The predictions were performed based on a data-driven approach using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network. The tip position predictions indicate the importance of using EIT data along with pressure inputs. Changing the number of EIT channels, we evaluated the effect of the number of EIT inputs on the accuracy of the predictions. The least RMSE values for the tip position are 3.6 and 4.6 mm in Y and Z coordinates, respectively, which are 7.36% and 6.07% of the actuator's total range of motion. Contact force predictions were conducted in three different bending angles and by varying the number of EIT channels. The results of the predictions illustrated that increasing the number of channels contributes to higher accuracy of the force estimation. Blockchain is a linearly linked, distributed, and very robust data structure. Originally proposed as part of the Bitcoin distributed stack, it found a number of applications in a number of fields, most notably in smart contracts, social media, secure IoT, and cryptocurrency mining. It ensures data integrity by distributing strongly encrypted data in widely redundant segments. Each new insertion requires verification and approval by the majority of the users of the blockchain. Both encryption and verification are computationally intensive tasks which cannot be solved with ordinary off-the-shelf CPUs. This has resulted in a renewed scientific interest in secure distributed communication and coordination protocols. Mobile health applications are growing progressively popular and have the enormous advantage of timely diagnosis of certain conditions. However, privacy concerns have been raised as mobile health application by default have access to highly sensitive personal data. This chapter presents concisely how blockchain can be applied to mobile health applications in order to enhance privacy.

Mobile health applications are steadily gaining momentum in the modern world given the omnipresence of various mobile or WiFi connections. Given that the bandwidth of these connections increases over time, especially in conjunction with advanced modulation and error-correction codes, whereas the latency drops, the cooperation between mobile applications becomes gradually easier. This translates to reduced computational burden and heat dissipation for each isolated device at the expense of increased privacy risks. This chapter presents a configurable and scalable edge computing architecture for cooperative digital health mobile applications.
