Landau band crossings typically stem from the intra-band evolution of electronic states in magnetic fields and enhance the interaction effect in their vicinity. Here in the extreme quantum limit of topological insulator HfTe5, we report the observation of a topological Lifshitz transition from inter-band Landau level crossings using magneto-infrared spectroscopy. By tracking the Landau level transitions, we demonstrate that band inversion drives the zeroth Landau bands to cross with each other after 4.5 T and forms one-dimensional Weyl mode with fundamental gap persistently closed. The unusual reduction of the zeroth Landau level transition activity suggests a topological Lifshitz transition at 21 T which shifts the Weyl mode close to Fermi level. As a result, a broad and asymmetric absorption feature emerges due to the Pauli blocking effect in one dimension, along with a distinctive negative magneto-resistivity. Our results provide a strategy for realizing one-dimensional Weyl quasiparticles in bulk crystals.

Topological crystalline insulator surface states can acquire an energy gap when time reversal symmetry is broken by interfacing with a magnetic insulator. Such hybrid topological-magnetic insulator structures can be used to generate novel anomalous Hall effects and to control the magnetic state of the insulator in a spintronic device. In this work, we successfully observe the energy gap of topological surface states in proximity with a magnetic insulator using magnetooptical Landau level spectroscopy. The measurements are carried out on Pb1-xSnxSe – EuSe heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy exhibiting record mobility and a low Fermi energy. Through temperature dependent measurements combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the origin of this gap is likely related to quantum confinement, which allows us to conclude that the magnetic proximity effect is weak in this system. The recovered energy gap sets an upper limit for the Fermi level needed to observe the quantized anomalous Hall effect using magnetic proximity heterostructure

We report the physicochemical analysis of Co-based pyrrolidinium analogues: (C4H10N)2CoCl4 and (C4H10N)2CoBr4. The results confirm that introducing mobile organic cations into an inorganic network might construct compounds with multiple properties.

During the last few years, a large number of mononuclear Co(ii) complexes of various coordination geometries have been explored as potential single ion magnets (SIMs). In the work presented herein, the Co(ii) S = 3/2 tetrahedral [Co{(OPPh2)(EPPh2)N}(2)], E = S, Se, complexes (abbreviated as CoO2E2), bearing chalcogenated mixed donor-atom imidodiphosphinato ligands, were studied by both experimental and computational techniques. Specifically, direct current (DC) magnetometry provided estimations of their zero-field splitting (zfs) axial (D) and rhombic (E) parameter values, which were more accurately determined by a combination of far-infrared magnetic spectroscopy and high-frequency and -field EPR spectroscopy studies. The latter combination of techniques was also implemented for the S = 3/2 tetrahedral [Co{((EPPr2)-Pr-i)(2)N}(2)], E = S, Se, complexes, confirming the previously determined magnitude of their zfs parameters. For both pairs of complexes (E = S, Se), it is concluded that the identity of the E donor atom does not significantly affect their zfs parameters. High-resolution multifrequency EPR studies of CoO2E2 provided evidence of multiple conformations, which are more clearly observed for CoO2Se2, in agreement with the structural disorder previously established for this complex by X-ray crystallography. The CoO2E2 complexes were shown to be field-induced SIMs, i.e., they exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization in the presence of an external DC magnetic field. Advanced quantum-chemical calculations on CoO2E2 provided additional insight into their electronic and structural properties.

The replacement of pyridine by 1-methyl-imidazol in the arms of a N

Large separation of magnetic levels and slow relaxation in metal complexes are desirable properties of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Spin-phonon coupling (interactions of magnetic levels with phonons) is ubiquitous, leading to magnetic relaxation and loss of memory in SMMs and quantum coherence in qubits. Direct observation of magnetic transitions and spin-phonon coupling in molecules is challenging. We have found that far-IR magnetic spectra (FIRMS) of Co(PPh3)2X2 (Co-X; X = Cl, Br, I) reveal rarely observed spin-phonon coupling as avoided crossings between magnetic and u-symmetry phonon transitions. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) gives phonon spectra. Calculations using VASP and Phonopy programs gave phonon symmetries and movies. Magnetic transitions among zero-field split (ZFS) levels of the S = 3/2 electronic ground state were probed by INS, high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR), FIRMS, and frequency-domain FT terahertz EPR (FD-FT THz-EPR), giving magnetic excitation spectra and determining ZFS parameters (D, E) and g values. Ligand-field theory (LFT) was used to analyze earlier electronic absorption spectra and give calculated ZFS parameters matching those from the experiments. DFT calculations also gave spin densities in Co-X, showing that the larger Co(II) spin density in a molecule is, the larger its ZFS magnitude is. The current work reveals dynamics of magnetic and phonons excitations in SMMs. Studies of such couplings in the future would help understand how spin-phonon coupling may lead to magnetic relaxation and develop guidance to control such coupling.

Three new coordination polymers, one-dimensional ones [Co(5,6-(Me)2-bzim)2(dca)2] (1) and [Co(5-Mebzim)2(dca)2]n (2) and two-dimensional polymer [Co(2-Mebzim)(dca)2]n (3), show DC magnetic data consistent with the S = 3/2 spin system with large zero-field splitting D > 0, which was confirmed by high-field HF EPR and FIRMS measurements. The experimental spectra of all complexes were simulated with axial g tensor components, a very large positive D value and different E/D ratios. These systems exhibit a slow magnetic relaxation under the moderate DC magnetic field with two relaxation channels. The high-frequency relaxation time develops according to combined Raman and phonon bottleneck relaxation mechanisms resulting from the unexpected thermal reciprocating behaviour when the low temperature relaxation time for the HF channel during cooling is shortened.

Coordination complexes that possess large magnetic anisotropy (otherwise known as zero-field splitting, ZFS) have possible applications in the field of magnetic materials, including single molecule magnets (SMMs). Previous studies have explored the role of coordination number and geometry in controlling the magnetic anisotropy and SMM behavior of high-spin (

High-Frequency and -Field EPR (HFEPR) studies of Fe(TPP)X (X = F, Cl, Br; I, TPP2−= meso-tetraphenylporphyrinate dianion) and far-IR magnetic spectroscopic (FIRMS) studies of Fe(TPP)Br and Fe(TPP)I have been conducted to probe magnetic intra- and inter-Kramers doublet transitions in these S = 5/2 metalloporphyrin complexes, yielding zero-field splitting (ZFS) and g parameters for the complexes: Fe(TPP)F, D = +4.67(1) cm−1, E = 0.00(1) cm−1, g⊥ = 1.97(1), g|| = 2.000(5) by HFEPR; Fe(TPP)Cl, D = +6.458(2) cm−1, E = +0.015(5) cm−1, E/D = 0.002, g⊥ = 2.004(3), g|| = 2.02(1) by HFEPR; Fe(TPP)Br, D = +9.03(5) cm−1, E = +0.047(5) cm−1, E/D = 0.005, giso = 1.99(1) by HFEPR and D = +9.05 cm−1, giso = 2.0 by FIRMS; Fe(TPP)I, D = +13.84 cm−1, E = +0.07 cm−1, E/D = 0.005, giso = 2.0 by HFEPR and D = +13.95 cm−1, giso = 2.0 by FIRMS (the sign of E was in each case arbitrarily assigned as that of D). These results demonstrate the complementary nature of field- and frequency-domain magnetic resonance experiments in extracting with high accuracy and precision spin Hamiltonian parameters of metal complexes with S > 1/2. The spin Hamiltonian parameters obtained from these experiments have been compared with those obtained from other physical methods such as magnetic susceptibility, magnetic Mossbauer spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and variable-temperature and -field magnetic circular dichroism (VT-VH MCD) experiments. INS, Mossbauer and MCD give good agreement with the results of HFEPR/FIRMS; the others not as much. The electronic structure of Fe(TPP)X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) was studied earlier by multi-reference ab initio methods to explore the origin of the large and positive D-values, reproducing the trends of D from the experiments. In the current work, a simpler model based on Ligand Field Theory (LFT) is used to explain qualitatively the trend of increasing ZFS from X = F to Cl to Br and to I as the axial ligand. Tetragonally elongated high-spin d5 systems such as Fe(TPP)X exhibit D > 0, but X plays a key role. Spin delocalization onto X means that there is a spin–orbit coupling (SOC) contribution to D from X•, as opposed to none from closed-shell X−. Over the range X = F, Cl, Br, I, X• character increases as does the intrinsic SOC of X• so that D increases correspondingly over this range.

Spin–Phonon coupling plays a critical role in magnetic relaxation in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and molecular qubits. Yet, few studies of its nature have been conducted. Phonons here refer to both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. In the current work, we show Spin–Phonon couplings between IR-active phonons in a lanthanide molecular complex and Kramers doublets (from the crystal field). For the SMM Er[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3) (1, Me = methyl), the couplings are observed in the far-IR magnetospectroscopy (FIRMS) of crystals with coupling constants ≈ 2−3 cm(−1). In particular, one of the magnetic excitations couples to at least two phonon excitations. The FIRMS reveals at least three magnetic excitations (within the (4)I(15/2) ground state/manifold; hereafter, manifold) at 0 T at 104, ∼180, and 245 cm(−1), corresponding to transitions from the ground state, M(J) = ±15/2, to the first three excited states, M(J) = ±13/2, ±11/2, and ±9/2, respectively. The transition between the ground and first excited Kramers doublet in 1 is also observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy, moving to a higher energy with an increasing magnetic field. INS also gives complete phonon spectra of 1. Periodic DFT computations provide the energies of all phonon excitations, which compare well with the spectra from INS, supporting the assignment of the inter-Kramers doublet (magnetic) transitions in the spectra. The current studies unveil and measure the Spin–Phonon couplings in a typical lanthanide complex and throw light on the origin of the Spin–Phonon entanglement.

We measured the infrared vibrational properties of two copper-containing coordination polymers, [Cu(pyz)2(2-HOpy)2](PF6)2 and [Cu(pyz)1.5(4-HOpy)2](ClO4)2, under different external stimuli in order to explore the microscopic aspects of spin-lattice coupling. While the temperature and pressure control hydrogen bonding, an applied field drives these materials from the antiferromagnetic → fully saturated state. Analysis of the pyrazine (pyz)-related vibrational modes across the magnetic quantum-phase transition provides a superb local probe of magnetoelastic coupling because the pyz ligand functions as the primary exchange pathway and is present in both systems. Strikingly, the PF6- compound employs several pyz-related distortions in support of the magnetically driven transition, whereas the ClO4- system requires only a single out-of-plane pyz bending mode. Bringing these findings together with magnetoinfrared spectra from other copper complexes reveals spin-lattice coupling across the magnetic quantum-phase transition as a function of the structural and magnetic dimensionality. Coupling is maximized in [Cu(pyz)1.5(4-HOpy)2](ClO4)2 because of its ladderlike character. Although spin-lattice interactions can also be explored under compression, differences in the local structure and dimensionality drive these materials to unique high-pressure phases. Symmetry analysis suggests that the high-pressure phase of the ClO4- compound may be ferroelectric.

The assembly of a Co(II) salt with two [Au(CN)2]− anions and ancillary ligands L afforded 2D complexes of the general formula {Co(L)2[Au(CN)2]2}n (where L = DMSO (1), DMF (2), Py (3) and PyPhCO (4); PyPhCO is benzoylpyridine). The structure of these complexes consists of parallel sheets, which are built from edgesharing slightly distorted square-planar {NC–Au–CN–Co}4 units with the Co(II) ions located at the corners and the [Au(CN)2]− bridging anions at the edges. Co(II) atoms exhibit a slightly tetragonally distorted CoN4X2 coordination sphere (X = O, N), where the L molecules occupy the axial positions. These molecules are oriented in such a way that they penetrate the holes of neighbouring layers, giving rise in the case of 1, 2 and 4 to AB bilayers held together by Au⋯Au aurophilic interactions, whereas in 3, there are no aurophilic interactions between neighbouring layers, so they are not arranged in pairs but equally separated. Dc magnetic properties, HFEPR (high-frequency and -field EPR) and FIRMS (far-infrared magnetic spectroscopy) measurements and ab initio calculations demonstrate that Co(II) ions in compounds 1–4 possess large and positive D values (≳+70 cm−1). The experimental D values follow the same order as that established from ab initio calculations including gold(I) atoms: D (2) > D (4) > D (3) > D (1), which highlights the important role of Au(I) in determining the anisotropy of the Co(II) ions. All the complexes show fieldinduced slow relaxation of magnetization through a predominant Raman mechanism above 3 K. Neither the anisotropy order nor the Co(II)⋯Co(II) distances are clearly correlated with the phenomenological Ueff parameter (or the Raman parameters). Description, Infrared spectroscopy in high magnetic fields reveals the lowest quantum limit in a Weyl semimetal., Topological semimetals are predicted to exhibit unconventional electrodynamics, but a central experimental challenge is singling out the contributions from the topological bands. TaAs is the prototypical example, where 24 Weyl points and 8 trivial Fermi surfaces make the interpretation of any experiment in terms of band topology ambiguous. We report magneto-infrared reflection spectroscopy measurements on TaAs. We observed sharp inter-Landau level transitions from a single pocket of Weyl Fermions in magnetic fields as low as 0.4 tesla. We determine the W2 Weyl point to be 8.3 meV below the Fermi energy, corresponding to a quantum limit—the field required to reach the lowest LL—of 0.8 tesla—unprecedentedly low for Weyl Fermions. LL spectroscopy allows us to isolate these Weyl Fermions from all other carriers in TaAs, and our result provides a way for directly exploring the more exotic quantum phenomena in Weyl semimetals, such as the chiral anomaly.

Realizing a large Landé g-factor of electrons in solid-state materials has long been thought of as a rewarding task as it can trigger abundant immediate applications in spintronics and quantum computing. Here, by using metamorphic InAsSb/InSb superlattices (SLs), we demonstrate an unprecedented high value of g ≈ 104, twice larger than that in bulk InSb, and fully spin-polarized states at low magnetic fields. In addition, we show that the g-factor can be tuned on demand from 20 to 110 via varying the SL period. The key ingredients of such a wide tunability are the wavefunction mixing and overlap between the electron and hole states, which have drawn little attention in prior studies. Our work not only establishes metamorphic InAsSb/InSb as a promising and competitive material platform for future quantum devices but also provides a new route toward g-factor engineering in semiconductor structures.

On passing from 1 to 4, the change of the counteranion decreases slightly the distortion of the CoN6 coordination polyhedron from trigonal prismatic to octahedral, with a parallel increase of the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. Compound 1 does not show slow magnetic relaxation, even in the presence of a dc magnetic field, due to fast QTM triggered by dipolar interactions. Although the complexes 2-4 show a weak frequency and temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility below 10 K at zero field, they exhibit slow relaxation and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour under the corresponding optimal field. The relaxation of the magnetization takes place mainly through a Raman relaxation process above 4 K, whereas below this temperature QTM and/or direct processes dominate. The relaxation time increases with the parallel increase of the uniaxial anisotropy on passing from 1. to 4. The width of the hysteresis for the trigonal prismatic complexes at 0.4 K decreases in the order 3 > 2 > 4 > 1, which is due to combined effects of QTM relaxation and axial anisotropy. Magnetic dilution of complexes 3 and 4 with Zn-II triggers the slow relaxation of the magnetization at zero-field, so that these complexes can be considered as "hidden mononuclear SMMs". Vibronic coupling, the interaction between molecular vibrations and electronic states, is a pervasive effect that profoundly affects chemical processes. In the case of molecular magnetic materials, vibronic, or spin-phonon, coupling leads to magnetic relaxation, which equates to loss of magnetic memory and loss of phase coherence in molecular magnets and qubits, respectively. The study of vibronic coupling is challenging, and most experimental evidence is indirect. Here we employ far-infrared magnetospectroscopy to probe vibronic transitions in in [Yb(trensal)] (where H3trensal = 2,2,2-tris(salicylideneimino)trimethylamine). We find intense signals near electronic states, which we show arise due to an “envelope effect” in the vibronic coupling Hamiltonian, and we calculate the vibronic coupling fully ab initio to simulate the spectra. We subsequently show that vibronic coupling is strongest for vibrational modes that simultaneously distort the first coordination sphere and break the C3 symmetry of the molecule. With this knowledge, vibrational modes could be identified and engineered to shift their energy towards or away from particular electronic states to alter their impact. Hence, these findings provide new insights towards developing general guidelines for the control of vibronic coupling in molecules.

We report on the synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic, thermodynamic, and electron-spin-resonance properties of the coordination complex $[{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{(\mathrm{pz})}_{3}{(4\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{HOpy})}_{4}]{({\mathrm{ClO}}_{4})}_{4}$ (pz=pyrazine; 4-HOpy=4-hydroxypyridine). This material is identified as a spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder system with exchange-coupling parameters ${J}_{rung}/{k}_{B}=12.1(1)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ and ${J}_{leg}/{k}_{B}=10.5(3)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ $[{J}_{rung}/{J}_{leg}=1.15(4)]$. For single crystals our measurements revealed two critical fields, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{c1}=4.63(5)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{c2}=22.78(5)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ (for $H\ensuremath{\parallel}{a}^{*}$), separating the gapped spin-liquid, gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid, and fully spin-polarized phase. No signature of a field-induced transition into a magnetically ordered phase was found at temperatures down to 450 mK. The material bridges an important gap by providing an excellent physical realization of an almost isotropic spin-1/2 strong-rung Heisenberg ladder system with modest exchange-coupling energy and critical-field scales.

Molecular vibrations play a key role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the vibrational properties of the molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$ by means of magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Our results allow us to unravel the vibrational decoherence pathways in combination with $ab$ $initio$ calculations including vibronic coupling. We observe field-induced spectral changes near 63 and 370 cm$^{-1}$ that are modeled in terms of $f$-manifold crystal field excitations activated by odd-symmetry vibrations. The overall extent of vibronic coupling in this system is limited by a transparency window in the phonon density of states that acts to keep the intramolecular vibrations and $M_J$ levels apart. These findings advance the understanding of vibronic coupling in molecular magnets, place significant constraints on the pattern of crystal field levels in these systems, and provide a strategy for designing molecular spin qubits with improved coherence lifetimes., 22 pages

International audience; A mononuclear iron(III) porphyrin compound exhibiting unexpectedly slow magnetic relaxation, which is a characteristic of single-ion magnet behaviour, is reported. This behaviour originates from the close proximity (approximate to 550 cm(-1)) of the intermediate-spinS=3/2 excited states to the high-spinS=5/2 ground state. More quantitatively, although the ground state is mostlyS=5/2, a spin-admixture model evidences a sizable contribution (approximate to 15 %) ofS=3/2 to the ground state, which as a consequence experiences large and positive axial anisotropy (D=+19.2 cm(-1)). Frequency-domain EPR spectroscopy allowed them(S)= |+/- 1/2⟩->|+/- 3/2⟩ transitions to be directly accessed, and thus the very large zero-field splitting in this 3d(5)system to be unambiguously measured. Other experimental results including magnetisation, Mossbauer, and field-domain EPR studies are consistent with this model, which is also supported by theoretical calculations.

For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magnetoinfrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking direction, along with an additional set of optical transitions from a band gap next to the Brillouin zone center. Our work identifies ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ as a strong TI at liquid helium temperature and provides a new perspective in determining band inversion in layered topological materials.

When surface states (SSs) form in topological insulators (TIs), they inherit the properties of bulk bands, including the electron-hole (e-h) asymmetry but with much more profound impacts. Here, via combining magneto-infrared spectroscopy with theoretical analysis, we show that e-h asymmetry significantly modifies the SS electronic structures when interplaying with the quantum confinement effect. Compared to the case without e-h asymmetry, the SSs now bear not only a band asymmetry as that in the bulk but also a shift of the Dirac point relative to the bulk bands and a reduction of the hybridization gap up to 70%. The experimental discovery of Weyl semimetals offers unprecedented opportunities to study Weyl physics in condensed matters. Unique electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals such as chiral magnetic effect has been observed and presented by the axial θ E · B term in electromagnetic Lagrangian (E and B are the electric and magnetic field, respectively). But till now, the experimental progress in this direction in Weyl semimetals is restricted to the DC regime. Here we report experimental access to the dynamic regime in Weyl semimetal NbAs by combining the internal deformation potential of coupled phonons with applied static magnetic field. While the dynamic E · B field is realized, it produces an anomalous phonon activity with a characteristic angle-dependence. Our results provide an effective approach to achieve the dynamic regime beyond the widely-investigated DC limit which enables the coupling between the Weyl fermions and the electromagnetic wave for further study of novel light-matter interactions in Weyl semimetals., Unique electronmagnetic response of Weyl semimetals have only been reported in static field regime. Here, the authors report evidence of a dynamical chiral anomaly response realized by internal collective lattice deformation with an external static magnetic field in a Weyl semimetal NbAs.

Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. Accurate determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters in transition-metal complexes with large zero-field splitting (ZFS) is an actual challenge in studying magnetic and spectroscopic properties of high-spin transition metal complexes. Recent critical papers have convincingly shown that previous determinations of these parameters, based only on the magnetic data, have low accuracy and reliability. A combination of X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry seems to be a more convincing and accurate approach. However, even in this case, the accuracy of the determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters is strongly limited. In this work, we propose a purely spectroscopic approach, in which three complementary EPR spectroscopic techniques are used to unambiguously with high accuracy determine the spin Hamiltonian parameters for transition-metal complexes with S = 3/2. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by analyzing the new quasi-octahedral high-spin Co(II) complex [Co(hfac)2(bpy)] (I). Along with the conventional X-band EPR spectroscopy, we also use such advanced techniques as multi-high-frequency EPR spectroscopy (MHF-EPR) and frequency-domain Fourier-transform THz-EPR (FD-FT THz-EPR). We demonstrate that the experimental data derived from the X-band and MHF-EPR EPR spectra allow determination of the g tensor (gx = 2.388, gy = 2.417, gz = 2.221) and the ZFS rhombicity parameter E/D = 0.158. The axial ZFS parameter D = 37.1 cm-1 is measured for I with the aid of FD-FT THZ-EPR spectroscopy, which is able to detect the high-energy EPR transition between the two Kramers doublets. CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum-chemical calculations of magnetic parameters and magnetic direct current (dc) measurements are performed as well as testing options, and the results obtained in these ways are in good agreement with those derived using the proposed spectroscopic approach.

Two mononuclear cobalt(II) compounds of formula [Co(dmphen)2(OOCPh)]ClO4·1/2H2O·1/2CH3OH (1) and [Co(dmbipy)2(OOCPh)]ClO4 (2) (dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, dmbipy = 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and HOOCPh = benzoic acid) are prepared and magnetostructurally investigated. Each cobalt(II) ion is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral CoN4O2 environment. The complex cations are interlinked leading to supramolecular chains (1) and pairs (2) that grow along the crystallographic c-axis with racemic mixtures of (Δ,Λ)-Co units. FIRMS allowed us to directly measure the zero-field splitting between the two lowest Kramers doublets, which led to axial anisotropy values of 58.3 cm-1 ≤ D < 60.7 cm-1 (1) and 63.8 cm-1 ≤ D < 64.1 cm-1 (2). HFEPR spectra of polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 at low temperatures confirm the positive sign of D and provide an estimate of the E/D quotient [0.147/0.187 (1) and 0.052 (2)]. Detailed ac and dc magnetic studies reveal that 1 and 2 are new examples of field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) with small transversal anisotropy. CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations support these results. Two Orbach processes or one Orbach plus a direct relaxation mechanism provide similar agreements with the nonlinear experimental Arrhenius plots at Hdc = 500 and 2500 G for 1. Two independent relaxation processes occur in 2, but in contrast to 1, an observed linear dependence of ln(τ) vs 1/T substantiates Orbach processes against the most widely proposed Raman and direct mechanisms. The analysis of each relaxation process in 2 provided values for Ea and τ0 that are very close to those found for 1, validating the predominant role of the Orbach relaxations in both compounds and, probably, also in other cobalt(II) SIMs. A mechanism based on a spin-phonon coupling is proposed to account for the SIM behavior in 1 and 2 with any Raman or direct processes being discarded.

Oxoiron(IV) units are often implicated as intermediates in the catalytic cycles of non-heme iron oxygenases and oxidases. The most reactive synthetic analogues of these intermediates are supported by tetradentate tripodal ligands with N-methylbenzimidazole or quinoline donors, but their instability precludes structural characterization. Herein we report crystal structures of two [FeIV (O)(L)]2+ complexes supported by pentadentate ligands incorporating these heterocycles, which show longer average Fe-N distances than the complex with only pyridine donors. These longer distances correlate linearly with log k2 ' values for O- and H-atom transfer rates, suggesting that weakening the ligand field increases the electrophilicity of the Fe=O center. The sterically bulkier quinoline donors are also found to tilt the Fe=O unit away from a linear N-Fe=O arrangement by 10°.

Oxidation of distorted square-planar perfluoropinacolate Co compound [CoII(pinF)2]2−, 1, to [CoIII(pinF)2]1−, 2, is reported. Rigidly square-planar 2 has an intermediate-spin, S = 1, ground state and very large zero-field splitting (ZFS) with D = 67.2 cm−1; |E| = 18.0 cm−1, (E/D = 0.27), g⊥ = 2.10, g‖ = 2.25 and χTIP = 1950 × 10−6 cm3 mol−1. This Co(III) species, 2, reacts with ROS to oxidise two (pinF)2− ligands to form tetrahedral [CoII(Hpfa)4]2−, 3.

A Dirac-type energy spectrum was demonstrated in gapless ultrashort-period metamorphic InAsSb/InSb superlattices by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. The Fermi velocity value of 7.4 × 105 m/s in a gapless superlattice with a period of 6.2 nm is in good agreement with the results of magnetoabsorption experiments. An “inverted” bandgap opens in the center of the Brillouin zone at higher temperatures and in the superlattice with a larger period. The ARPES data indicate the presence of a surface electron accumulation layer.

Large separations between ground and excited magnetic states in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are desirable to reduce the likelihood of spin reversal in the molecules. Spin-phonon coupling is a process leading to magnetic relaxation. Both the reversal and coupling, making SMMs lose magnetic moments, are undesirable. However, direct determination of large magnetic states separations (>45 cm-1 ) is challenging, and few detailed investigations of the spin-phonon coupling have been conducted. The magnetic separation in [Co(12-crown-4)2 ](I3 )2 (12-crown-4) (1) is determined and its spin-phonon coupling is probed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and far-IR spectroscopy. INS, using oriented single crystals, shows a magnetic transition at 49.4(1.0) cm-1 . Far-IR reveals that the magnetic transition and nearby phonons are coupled, a rarely observed phenomenon, with spin-phonon coupling constants of 1.7-2.5 cm-1 . The current work spectroscopically determines the ground-excited magnetic states separation in an SMM and quantifies its spin-phonon coupling, shedding light on the process causing magnetic relaxation.

Here we report a combined use of THz-EPR and NMR spectroscopy for obtaining a detailed electronic structure of a long-known high-spin complex, cobalt(II) bis[tris(pyrazolyl)borate]. The lowest inter-Kramers transition was directly measured by THz-EPR spectroscopy, while the energies of higher Kramers doublets were estimated by a recently proposed NMR-based approach. Together, they produced magnetic parameters for a full model that explicitly includes spin–orbit coupling. This approach is applicable to all transition metal ions for which the spin–orbit coupling cannot be treated perturbatively.

Herein, we report a new trigonal prismatic cobalt(II) complex that behaves as a single molecule magnet. The obtained zero-field splitting, which is also directly accessed by THz-EPR spectroscopy (-102.5 cm-1 ), results in a large magnetization reversal barrier U of 205 cm-1 . Its effective value, however, is much lower (101 cm-1 ), even though there is practically no contribution from quantum tunneling to magnetization relaxation.
