The experiments presented here investigate the competing photodissociation pathways for allyl chloride upon excitation of the nominally ππ*(C=C) transition at 193 nm. The measured photofragment velocity distributions evidence C–Cl bond fission and HCl elimination. The recoil kinetic energy distribution for the HCl products is bimodal, indicating two primary processes for HCl elimination. The experimental measurements show C–Cl bond fission dominates, giving an absolute branching ratio of HCl:C–Cl=0.12±0.03 when the parent molecule is expanded through a nozzle at 200 °C. The branching ratio depends on the nozzle temperature; at 475 °C, the absolute branching ratio measured is HCl:C–Cl=0.24±0.03. We analyze the experimental results along with supporting ab initio calculations and earlier photodissociation studies of vinyl chloride in order to examine the potential influence of nonadiabaticity along the C–Cl fission reaction coordinate and its dependence on molecular conformation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. The incorporation of swine manure with tillage effectively reduces ammonia (NH3) emissions and conserves crop available nitrogen (N) but is not compatible with no-till and many other conservation tillage programs. Rolling-tine aerators potentially provide a means to enhance manure infiltration with limited disruption of the soil surface; however, the impact of the range of aerator configurations and manure placements has not been widely studied. We measured NH3 emissions, conducted presidedress nitrate (NO3) tests (PSNT), monitored corn (Zea mal,s L.) grain yield when swine manure was incorporated with combinations of two aerator toolbar offset angles (0° and 10°) and two manure placements (broadcast before aeration and banded behind aerator), and compared those measurements to unincorporated surface application and an unmanured control. Additional plots were established with five rates of mineral N fertilization to determine N response curve and estimate fertilizer N equivalent of the applied manure. Measurement of cumulative NH3 emissions using a dynamic chamber method showed that offsetting the aerator toolbar by 10° reduced emissions by 65% to 75%, with both manure placements, compared to surface application. However, no consistent reductions in NH3 emissions were observed when the toolbar was not offset. While reduction in NH3 with the offset toolbar could conserve substantial amounts of plant available N, the soil disturbance caused by the offset tines would not be compatible with most conservation tillage programs. Presidedress NO3 test values increased when NH3 emissions were reduced. In 2009, both the angled and straight aerator treatments with manure banded behind the aerator resulted in significantly higher corn grain yield than all other treatments despite reductions in NH3 emissions only when the toolbar was angled. Correlation of yield from manure application treatments with the N response curve for multiple mineral N application rates showed a greater than expected response to manure application. Yield responses are an indication that aeration has benefits in addition to N conservation. We do not recommend the rolling-tine aerator if reducing NH3 emissions in conservation tillage is the primary goal, but future study into other yield-increasing benefits of aeration is needed. The U.S. Army uses several types of tests to increase the reliability of gun-fired munitions. Systems, subsystems, and components are gun fired to assess reliability. When failures are found, root-cause investigations are completed and parts may be redesigned. For in- stance, the 155 mm projectile Excalibur uses several types of tests to find failures and build reliability. Components are tested in a rail gun, a new soft-catch gun, and in soft recovery vehicles. With the rail gun, test projectiles are fired from a worn gun tube into a trough of water The soft-catch gun, a hybrid system using both air and water, has a standard cannon tube and a series of catch tubes to stop a projectile. The third type of test, a soft recovery vehicle, uses a modified tactical Excalibur with a parachute for a soft landing. All three types of tests have on-board recorders to capture ballistic accelerations. Accelerometer data are used in failure investigations, redesign parts, and to design new projectiles. The purpose of this paper is to compare accelerations from different types of ballistic tests. Comparisons were done to determine if the tests were in the same statistical family. Comparisons are made for a United States MACS 5 charge. The maxi- mum axial forces were the same for the soft-catch gun and the soft recovery vehicle. In the balloting directions, the rail gun and soft recovery vehicle had similar forces. The set forward forces differed in all three cases, reflecting the different catch mechanisms for the projectiles. Comparisons of g-forces were also made using shock response spectra. The shock response indicated that the damage potential is greatest for the rail gun tests, consistent with an increase rate of failures for some electronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
