During magnetic reconnection in collisionless space plasma, the electron fluid decouples from the magnetic field within narrow current layers, and theoretical models for this process can be distinguished in terms of their predicted current layer widths. From theory, the off-diagonal stress in the electron pressure tensor is related to thermal non-circular orbit motion of electrons around the magnetic field lines. This stress becomes significant when the width of the reconnecting current layer approaches the small characteristic length scale of the electron motion. To aid in situ spacecraft and numerical investigations of reconnection, the structure of the electron diffusion region is here investigated using the Terrestrial Reconnection EXperiment (TREX). In agreement with the closely matched kinetic simulations, laboratory observations reveal the presence of electron-scale current layer widths. Although the layers are modulated by a current-driven instability, 3D simulations demonstrate that it is the off-diagonal stress that is responsible for breaking the frozen-in condition of the electron fluid., Comment: Reviewed and accepted to the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics. Magnetic reconnection is explored on the Terrestrial Reconnection Experiment (TREX) for asymmetric inflow conditions and in a configuration where the absolute rate of reconnection is set by an external drive. Magnetic pileup enhances the upstream magnetic field of the high density inflow, leading to an increased upstream Alfven speed and helping to lower the normalized reconnection rate to values expected from theoretical consideration. In addition, a shock interface between the far upstream supersonic plasma inflow and the region of magnetic flux pileup is observed, important to the overall force balance of the system, hereby demonstrating the role of shock formation for configurations including a supersonically driven inflow. Despite the specialised geometry where a strong reconnection drive is applied from only one side of the reconnection layer, previous numerical and theoretical results remain robust and are shown to accurately predict the normalized rate of reconnection for the range of system sizes considered. HARMONI is a visible and NIR integral field spectrograph, providing the E-ELT's core spectroscopic capability at first light. HARMONI will work at the diffraction limit of the E-ELT, thanks to a Classical and a Laser Tomographic AO system. In this paper, we present the system choices that have been made for these SCAO and LTAO modules. In particular, we describe the strategy developed for the different Wave-Front Sensors: pyramid for SCAO, the LGSWFS concept, the NGSWFS path, and the truth sensor capabilities. The performance of adaptive optics systems is partially dependant on the algorithms used within the real-time control system to compute wavefront slope measurements. We demonstrate use of a matched filter algorithm for the processing of elongated laser guide star (LGS) Shack-Hartmann images, using the CANARY adaptive optics instrument on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope and the European Southern Observatory Wendelstein LGS Unit placed 40m away. This algorithm has been selected for use with the forthcoming Thirty Meter Telescope, but until now had not been demonstrated on-sky. From the results of a first observing run, we show that the use of matched filtering improves our adaptive optics system performance, with increases in on-sky H-band Strehl measured up to about a factor of 1.1 with respect to a conventional centre of gravity approach. Canary is the Multi-Object Adaptive Optics (MOAO) pathfinder for the future MOAO-assisted Integral-Field Units (IFU) proposed for Extremely Large Telescopes (ELT). The MOAO concept relies on tomographically reconstructing the turbulence using multiple measurements along different lines of sight. Tomography requires the knowledge of the statistical turbulence parameters, commonly recovered from the system telemetry using a dedicated profiling technique. For demonstration purposes with the MOAO pathfinder Canary , this identification is performed thanks to the Learn & Apply (L&A) algorithm, that consists in model- fitting the covariance matrix of WFS measurements dependent on relevant parameters: $C_n^2(h)$ profile, outer scale profile and system mis-registration. We explore an upgrade of this algorithm, the Learn 3 Steps (L3S) approach, that allows one to dissociate the identification of the altitude layers from the ground in order to mitigate the lack of convergence of the required empirical covariance matrices therefore reducing the required length of data time-series for reaching a given accuracy. For nominal observation conditions, the L3S can reach the same level of tomographic error in using five times less data frames than the L&A approach. The L3S technique has been applied over a large amount of Canary data to characterize the turbu- lence above the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). These data have been acquired the 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th September 2013 and we find 0.67"/8.9m/3.07m/s of total seeing/outer scale/wind-speed, with 0.552"/9.2m/2.89m/s below 1.5 km and 0.263"/10.3m/5.22m/s between 1.5 and 20 km. We have also de- termined the high altitude layers above 20 km, missed by the tomographic reconstruction on Canary , have a median seeing of 0.187" and have occurred 16% of observation time.

CANARY is the multi-object adaptive optics (MOAO) on-sky pathfinder developed in the perspective of Multi-Object Spectrograph on Extremely Large Telescopes~(ELTs). In 2013, CANARY was operated on-sky at the William Herschel telescope~(WHT), using three off-axis natural guide stars~(NGS) and four off-axis Rayleigh laser guide stars~(LGS), in open-loop, with the on-axis compensated turbulence observed with a H-band imaging camera and a Truth wave-front sensor~(TS) for diagnostic purposes. Our purpose is to establish a reliable and accurate wave-front error breakdown for LGS MOAO. This will enable a comprehensive analysis of \cana on-sky results and provide tools for validating simulations of MOAO systems for ELTs. To evaluate the MOAO performance, we compared the CANARY on-sky results running in MOAO, in Single Conjugated Adaptive Optics~(SCAO) and in Ground Layer Adaptive Optics~(GLAO) modes, over a large set of data acquired in 2013. We provide a statistical study of the seeing. We also evaluated the wave-front error breakdown from both analytic computations, one based on a MOAO system modelling and the other on the measurements from the CANARY TS. We have focussed especially on the tomographic error and we detail its vertical error decomposition~(VED). We show that CANARY obtained 30.1\%, 21.4\% and 17.1\% H-band Strehl ratios in SCAO, MOAO and GLAO respectively, for median seeing conditions with 0.66" of total seeing including 0.59" at the ground. Moreover, we get 99\% of correlation over 4,500 samples, for any AO modes, between two analytic computations of residual phase variance. Based on these variances, we obtain a reasonable Strehl-ratio~(SR) estimation when compared to the measured IR image SR. We evaluate the gain in compensation for the altitude turbulence brought by MOAO when compared to GLAO.

In preparation of future Multi-Object Spectrographs (MOS) whose one of the major role is to provide an extensive statistical studies of high redshifted galaxies surveyed, the demonstrator Canary has been designed to tackle technical challenges related to open-loop Adaptive-Optics (AO) control with jointed Natural Guide Star (NGS) and Laser Guide Star (LGS) tomography. We have developed a Point Spread Function (PSF)-Reconstruction algorithm dedicated to MOAO systems using system telemetry to estimate the PSF potentially anywhere in the observed field, a prerequisite to post- process AO-corrected observations in Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS). In this paper we show how to handle off-axis data to estimate the PSF using atmospheric tomography and compare it to a classical approach that uses on-axis residual phase from a truth sensor observing a natural bright source. We have reconstructed over 450 on-sky Canary PSFs and we get bias/1-${\sigma}$ standard-deviation (std) of 1.3/4.8 on the H-band Strehl ratio (SR) with 92.3% of correlation between reconstructed and sky SR. On the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), we get respectively 2.94 mas, 19.9 mas and 88.3% for the bias, std and correlation. The reference method achieves 0.4/3.5/95% on the SR and 2.71 mas/14.9 mas/92.5% on the FWHM for the bias/std/correlation.

Recent advances in adaptive optics (AO) have led to the implementation of wide field-of-view AO systems. A number of wide-field AO systems are also planned for the forthcoming Extremely Large Telescopes. Such systems have multiple wavefront sensors of different types, and usually multiple deformable mirrors (DMs). Here, we report on our experience integrating cameras and DMs with the real-time control systems of two wide-field AO systems. These are CANARY, which has been operating on-sky since 2010, and DRAGON, which is a laboratory adaptive optics real-time demonstrator instrument. We detail the issues and difficulties that arose, along with the solutions we developed. Laser Guide Stars (LGS) have greatly increased the sky-coverage of Adaptive Optics (AO) systems. Due to the up-link turbulence experienced by LGSs, a Natural Guide Star (NGS) is still required, preventing full sky-coverage. We present a method of obtaining partial tip-tilt information from LGSs alone in multi-LGS tomographic LGS AO systems. The method of LGS up-link tip-tilt determination is derived using a geometric approach, then an alteration to the Learn and Apply algorithm for tomographic AO is made to accommodate up-link tip-tilt. Simulation results are presented, verifying that the technique shows good performance in correcting high altitude tip-tilt, but not that from low altitudes. We suggest that the method is combined with multiple far off-axis tip-tilt NGSs to provide gains in performance and sky-coverage over current tomographic AO systems., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 11th March 2016

InGaN nanowires are suitable building blocks for many future optoelectronic devices. We show that a linear grading of the indium content along the nanowire axis from GaN to InN introduces an internal electric field evoking a photocurrent. Consistent with quantitative band structure simulations we observe a sign change in the measured photocurrent as a function of photon flux. This negative differential photocurrent opens the path to a new type of nanowire-based photodetector. We demonstrate that the photocurrent response of the nanowires is as fast as 1.5 ps.

We present recent results from the initial testing of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based tomographic reconstructor Complex Atmospheric Reconstructor based on Machine lEarNing (CARMEN) on Canary, an Adaptive Optics demonstrator operated on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope, La Palma. The reconstructor was compared with contemporaneous data using the Learn and Apply (L&A) tomographic reconstructor. We find that the fully optimised L&A tomographic reconstructor outperforms CARMEN by approximately 5% in Strehl ratio or 15nm rms in wavefront error. We also present results for Canary in Ground Layer Adaptive Optics mode to show that the reconstructors are tomographic. The results are comparable and this small deficit is attributed to limitations in the training data used to build the ANN. Laboratory bench tests show that the ANN can out perform L&A under certain conditions, e.g. if the higher layer of a model two layer atmosphere was to change in altitude by ~300~m (equivalent to a shift of approximately one tenth of a subaperture)., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report on the first demonstration of p-type doping in large area few-layer films of (0001)-oriented chemical vapor deposited (CVD) MoS2. Niobium was found to act as an efficient acceptor up to relatively high density in MoS2 films. For a hole density of 4 x 1020 cm-3 Hall mobility of 8.5 cm2V-1s-1 was determined, which matches well with the theoretically expected values. XRD and Raman characterization indicate that the film had good out-of-plane crystalline quality. Absorption measurements showed that the doped sample had similar characteristics to high-quality undoped samples, with a clear absorption edge at 1.8 eV. This demonstration of p-doping in large area epitaxial MoS2 could help in realizing a wide variety of electrical and opto-electronic devices based on layered metal dichalcogenides.

Multi-object adaptive optics (MOAO) has been demonstrated by the CANARY instrument on the William Herschel Telescope. However, for proposed MOAO systems on the next generation Extremely Large Telescopes, such as EAGLE, many challenges remain. Here we investigate requirements that MOAO operation places on deformable mirrors (DMs) using a full end-to-end Monte-Carlo AO simulation code. By taking into consideration a prior global ground-layer (GL) correction, we show that actuator density for the MOAO DMs can be reduced with little performance loss. We note that this reduction is only possible with the addition of a GL DM, whose order is greater than or equal to that of the original MOAO mirrors. The addition of a GL DM of lesser order does not affect system performance (if tip/tilt star sharpening is ignored). We also quantify the maximum mechanical DM stroke requirements (3.5 $\mu$m desired) and provide tolerances for the DM alignment accuracy, both lateral (to within an eighth of a sub-aperture) and rotational (to within 0.2$^\circ$). By presenting results over a range of laser guide star asterism diameters, we ensure that these results are equally applicable for laser tomographic AO systems. We provide the opportunity for significant cost savings to be made in the implementation of MOAO systems, resulting from the lower requirement for DM actuator density., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the magnetic and the electronic properties of the prototype dilute magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As using infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Trends in the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ with respect to the IR spectral weight are examined using a sum-rule analysis of IR conductivity spectra. We find non-monotonic behavior of trends in $T_C$ with the spectral weight to effective Mn ratio, which suggest a strong double-exchange component to the FM mechanism, and highlights the important role of impurity states and localization at the Fermi level. Spectroscopic features of the IR conductivity are tracked as they evolve with temperature, doping, annealing, As-antisite compensation, and are found only to be consistent with an Mn-induced IB scenario. Furthermore, our detailed exploration of these spectral features demonstrates that seemingly conflicting trends reported in the literature regarding a broad mid-IR resonance with respect to carrier density in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As are in fact not contradictory. Our study thus provides a consistent experimental picture of the magnetic and electronic properties of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As.

The EAGLE and EVE Phase A studies for instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) originated from related top-level scientific questions, but employed different (yet complementary) methods to deliver the required observations. We re-examine the motivations for a multi-object spectrograph (MOS) on the E-ELT and present a unified set of requirements for a versatile instrument. Such a MOS would exploit the excellent spatial resolution in the near-infrared envisaged for EAGLE, combined with aspects of the spectral coverage and large multiplex of EVE. Periodic structures of GdN particles encapsulated in a single crystalline GaN matrix were prepared by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution X-ray diffractometery shows that GdN islands, with rock salt structure are epitaxially oriented to the wurtzite GaN matrix. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction allows for the study of island formation dynamics, which occurs after 1.2 monolayers of GdN coverage. Magnetometry reveals two ferromagnetic phases, one due to GdN particles with Curie temperature of 70K and a second, anomalous room temperature phase., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Resonant tunneling diodes are formed using AlN/GaN core-shell nanowire heterostructures grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy on n-Si(111) substrates. By using a coaxial geometry these devices take advantage of non-polar (m-plane) nanowire sidewalls. Device modeling predicts non-polar orientation should enhance resonant tunneling compared to a polar structure and that AlN double barriers will lead to higher peak-to-valley current ratios compared to AlGaN barriers. Electrical measurements of ensembles of nanowires show negative differential resistance appearing only at cryogenic temperature. Individual nanowire measurements show negative differential resistance at room temperature with peak current density of 5*10^5 A/cm^2., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report infrared studies of the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) in GaAs doped with either magnetic (Mn) or non-magnetic acceptors (Be). We observe a resonance with a natural assignment to impurity states in the insulating regime of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As, which persists across the IMT to the highest doping (16%). Beyond the IMT boundary, behavior combining insulating and metallic trends also persists to the highest Mn doping. Be doped samples however, display conventional metallicity just above the critical IMT concentration, with features indicative of transport within the host valence band.

Here we report on measurements of the spin-Seebeck effect of GaMnAs over an extended temperature range alongside the thermal conductivity, specific heat, magnetization, and thermoelectric power. The amplitude of the spin-Seebeck effect in GaMnAs scales with the thermal conductivity of the GaAs substrate and the phonon-drag contribution to the thermoelectric power of the GaMnAs, demonstrating that phonons drive the spin redistribution. A phenomenological model involving phonon-magnon drag explains the spatial and temperature dependence of the measured spin distribution., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

The spin-Seebeck effect was recently discovered in a metallic ferromagnet and consists of a thermally generated spin distribution that is electrically measured utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect. Here this effect is reproduced experimentally in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, GaMnAs, which allows for flexible design of the magnetization directions, a larger spin polarization, and measurements across the magnetic phase transition. The spin-Seebeck effect in GaMnAs is observed even in the absence of longitudinal charge transport. EAGLE is the multi-object, spatially-resolved, near-IR spectrograph instrument concept for the E-ELT, relying on a distributed Adaptive Optics, so-called Multi Object Adaptive Optics. This paper presents the results of a phase A study. Using 84x84 actuator deformable mirrors, the performed analysis demonstrates that 6 laser guide stars and up to 5 natural guide stars of magnitude R<17, picked-up in a 7.3' diameter patrol field of view, allow us to obtain an overall performance in terms of Ensquared Energy of 35% in a 75x75 mas^2 spaxel at H band, whatever the target direction in the centred 5' science field for median seeing conditions. We describe a systematic study of the exchange coupling between a magnetically hard metallic ferromagnet (MnAs) and a magnetically soft ferromagnetic semiconductor (GaMnAs) in bilayer and trilayer heterostructures. An exchange spring model of MnAs/GaMnAs bilayers accounts for the variation of the exchange bias field with layer thickness and composition. We also present evidence for hole-mediated interlayer exchange coupling in MnAs/p-GaAs/\GaMnAs trilayers and study the dependence of the exchange bias field on the thickness of the spacer layer., Comment: Submitted tp Phys. Heavily-alloyed, 100 nm Ga1-xMnxAs (x>0.1) films are obtained via low temperature molecular beam epitaxy utilizing a combinatorial technique which allows systematic control of excess arsenic during growth. Reproducible, optimized electronic, magnetic and structural properties are found in a narrow range of stoichiometric growth conditions. The Curie temperature of stoichiometric material is 150-165 K and independent of x within a large window of growth conditions while substitutional Mn content increases linearly, contradicting the prediction of the Zener Model of hole-mediated ferromagnetism., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We develop a quantitatively predictive theory for impurity-band ferromagnetism in the low-doping regime of GaMnAs and compare with experimental measurements of a series of samples whose compositions span the transition from paramagnetic insulating to ferromagnetic conducting behavior. The theoretical Curie temperatures depend sensitively on the local fluctuations in the Mn-hole binding energy, which originates from disorder in the Mn distribution as well as the presence of As antisite defects. The experimentally-determined hopping energy at the Curie temperature is roughly constant over a series of samples whose conductivities vary more than 10^4 and whose hole concentrations vary more than 10^2. Thus in this regime the hopping energy is an excellent predictor of the Curie temperature for a sample, in agreement with the theory., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Using five independent analytic and Monte Carlo simulation codes, we have studied the performance of wide field ground layer adaptive optics (GLAO), which can use a single, relatively low order deformable mirror to correct the wavefront errors from the lowest altitude turbulence. GLAO concentrates more light from a point source in a smaller area on the science detector, but unlike traditional adaptive optics, images do not become diffraction-limited. Rather the GLAO point spread function (PSF) has the same functional form as a seeing-limited PSF, and can be characterized by familiar performance metrics such as Full-Width Half-Max (FWHM). The FWHM of a GLAO PSF is reduced by 0.1" or more for optical and near-infrared wavelengths over different atmospheric conditions. For the Cerro Pachon atmospheric model this correction is even greater when the image quality is worst, which effectively eliminates "bad-seeing" nights; the best seeing-limited image quality, available only 20% of the time, can be achieved 60 to 80% of the time with GLAO. This concentration of energy in the PSF will reduce required exposure times and improve the efficiency of an observatory up to 30 to 40%. These performance gains are relatively insensitive to a number of trades including the exact field of view of a wide field GLAO system, the conjugate altitude and actuator density of the deformable mirror, and the number and configuration of the guide stars., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in PASP

Time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy is used to monitor the room temperature electron spin dynamics of optical telecommunication wavelength AlInGaAs multiple quantum wells lattice-matched to InP. We found that electron spin coherence times and effective g-factors vary as a function of aluminum concentration. The measured electron spin coherence times of these multiple quantum wells, with wavelengths ranging from 1.26 microns to 1.53 microns, reach approximately 100 ps at room temperature, and the measured electron effective g-factors are in the range from -2.3 to -1.1., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the Curie temperature and hole density of (Ga,Mn)As while systematically varying the As-antisite density. Hole compensation by As-antisites limits the Curie temperature and can completely quench long-range ferromagnetic order in the low doping regime of 1-2% Mn. Samples are grown by molecular beam epitaxy without substrate rotation in order to smoothly vary the As to Ga flux ratio across a single wafer. This technique allows for a systematic study of the effect of As stoichiometry on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As. For concentrations less than 1.5% Mn, a strong deviation from Tc ~ p^0.33 is observed. Our results emphasize that proper control of As-antisite compensation is critical for controlling the Curie temperatures in (Ga,Mn)As at the low doping limit., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We investigate electrically-induced spin currents generated by the spin Hall effect in GaAs structures that distinguish edge effects from spin transport. Using Kerr rotation microscopy to image the spin polarization, we demonstrate that the observed spin accumulation is due to a transverse bulk electron spin current, which can drive spin polarization nearly 40 microns into a region in which there is minimal electric field. Using a model that incorporates the effects of spin drift, we determine the transverse spin drift velocity from the magnetic field dependence of the spin polarization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Recent measurements of coherent electron spin dynamics reveal an antiferromagnetic s-d exchange coupling between conduction band electrons and electrons localized on Mn{2+} impurities in GaMnAs quantum wells. Here we discuss systematic measurements of the s-d exchange interaction in GaMnAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with different confinement potentials using time-resolved Kerr rotation. Extending previous investigations of the dependence of the s-d exchange, N{0}alpha, on well width, we find that its magnitude also depends on well depth. Both phenomena reduce to a general dependence on confinement energy, described by a band-mixing model of confinement-induced kinetic exchange in the conduction band., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

A method for producing a laser guide star wavefront sensor for adaptive optics with reduced focal anisoplanatism is presented. A theoretical analysis and numerical simulations have been carried out and the results are presented. The technique, named SPLASH (Sky-Projected Laser Array Shack-Hartmann), is shown to suffer considerably less from focal anisoplanatism than a conventional laser guide star system. We investigate electron spin dynamics in narrow two-dimensional n-InGaAs channels as a function of the channel width. The spin relaxation times increase with decreasing channel width, in accordance with recent theoretical predictions based on the dimensionally-constrained D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism. Surprisingly, the suppression of the relaxation rate, which is anticipated for the one-dimensional limit, is observed for widths that are an order of magnitude larger than the electron mean free path. We find the spin precession length and the channel width to be the relevant length scales for interpreting these results., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the Gregory-Laflamme instability for black strings carrying KK-momentum along the internal direction. We demonstrate a simple kinematical relation between the thresholds of the classical instability for the boosted and static black strings. We also find that Sorkin's critical dimension depends on the internal velocity and in fact disappears for sufficiently large boosts. Our analysis implies the existence of an analogous instability for the five-dimensional black ring of Emparan and Reall. Recently certain non-supersymmetric solutions of type IIb supergravity were constructed [hep-th/0504181], which are everywhere smooth, have no horizons and are thought to describe certain non-BPS microstates of the D1-D5 system. We demonstrate that these solutions are all classically unstable. The instability is a generic feature of horizonless geometries with an ergoregion. We consider the endpoint of this instability and argue that the solutions decay to supersymmetric configurations. The effect of uniaxial tensile strain on spin coherence in n-type GaAs epilayers is probed using time-resolved Kerr rotation, photoluminescence, and optically-detected nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. The bandgap, electron spin lifetime, electron g-factor, and nuclear quadrupole splitting are simultaneously imaged over millimeter scale areas of the epilayers for continuously varying values of strain. All-optical nuclear magnetic resonance techniques allow access to the strain induced nuclear quadrupolar resonance splitting in field regimes not easily addressable using conventional optically-detected nuclear magnetic resonance., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Described here is the design and commissioning of a coronagraph facility for the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope (WHT) and its Nasmyth Adaptive Optics system for Multi-purpose Instrumentation (NAOMI). The use of the NAOMI system gives an improved image resolution of ~0.15 arcsecs at a wavelength of 2.2um. This enables the Optimised Stellar Coronagraph for Adaptive optics (OSCA) to suppress stellar light using smaller occulting masks and thus allows regions closer to bright astronomical objects to be imaged. OSCA provides a selection of 10 different occulting masks with sizes of 0.25 - 2.0 arcsecs in diameter, including two with full greyscale Gaussian profiles. There is also a choice of different sized and shaped Lyot stops (pupil plane masks). Computer simulations of the different coronagraphic options with the NAOMI segmented mirror have relevance for the next generation of highly segmented extremely large telescopes., Comment: 9 pages, 16 figures. Semiconductor microcavities offer unique means of controlling light-matter interactions, which have led to the development of a wide range of applications in optical communications and inspired proposals for quantum information processing and computational schemes. Studies of spin dynamics in microcavities - a new and promising research field - have revealed novel effects such as polarization beats, stimulated spin scattering, and giant Faraday rotation. Here, we study the electron spin dynamics in optically-pumped GaAs microdisk lasers with quantum wells (QWs) and interface-fluctuation quantum dots (QDs) in the active region. In particular, we address the question of how the electron spin dynamics are modified by the stimulated emission in the disks, and observe an enhancement of the spin lifetime when the optical excitation is in resonance with a high quality (Q ~ 5000) lasing mode. Spin-orbit coupling in semiconductors relates the spin of an electron to its momentum and provides a pathway for electrically initializing and manipulating electron spins for applications in spintronics and spin-based quantum information processing. This coupling can be regulated with quantum confinement in semiconductor heterostructures through band structure engineering. Here we investigate the spin Hall effect and current-induced spin polarization in a two-dimensional electron gas confined in (110) AlGaAs quantum wells using Kerr rotation microscopy. In contrast to previous measurements, the spin Hall profile exhibits complex structure, and the current-induced spin polarization is out-of-plane. The experiments map the strong dependence of the current-induced spin polarization to the crystal axis along which the electric field is applied, reflecting the anisotropy of the spin-orbit interaction. Growth of GaMnAs by molecular beam epitaxy is typically performed at low substrate temperatures (250C) and high As overpressures leading to the incorporation of excess As and Mn interstitials, which quench optical signals such as photoluminescence (PL). We report on optical-quality Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/Al(0.4)Ga(0.6)As quantum wells (QWs) with x < 0.2% grown at a substrate temperature of 400C. Electrical and structural measurements demonstrate that this elevated temperature reduces As defects while allowing the substitutional incorporation of Mn into Ga sites. From a combination of Hall and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements we estimate that at least 70-90% of the Mn incorporates substitutionally in all samples studied. The incorporation behavior shows both a substrate temperature and QW width dependence. The lower defect density of these heterostructures, compared to typical lower temperature grown GaMnAs, enables the observation of both polarization-resolved PL and coherent electron spin dynamics, from which the conduction band exchange parameter is extracted. No evidence of long-range Mn spin coupling is observed, whereas negative effective Curie temperatures indicate spin heating due to photoexcitation. The electron spin lifetime is maximized for light Mn doping and shows little magnetic field dependence indicating that the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism is dominant in these structures. PL spectra reveal a low energy peak from shallow donors, which because of the paramagnetic behavior of its PL polarization, we ascribe to Mn interstitials., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, and 1 table

Precession of electrically-excited spins in the absence of applied magnetic fields is directly observed by Kerr rotation microscopy. Measurements of coherent electron spin dynamics in Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/Al(0.4)Ga(0.6)As quantum wells with 0.0006% < x < 0.03% show an antiferromagnetic (negative) exchange bewteen s-like conduction band electrons and electrons localized in the d-shell of the Mn2+ impurities. The magnitude of the s-d exchange parameter, N0 alpha, varies as a function of well width indicative of a large and negative contribution due to kinetic exchange. In the limit of no quantum confinement, N0 alpha extrapolates to -0.09 +/- 0.03 eV indicating that antiferromagnetic s-d exchange is a bulk property of GaMnAs. Measurements of the polarization-resolved photoluminescence show strong discrepancy from a simple model of the exchange enhanced Zeeman splitting, indicative of additional complexity in the exchange split valence band., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and one action figure

A ring structure fabricated from GaAs is used to achieve interference of the net spin polarization of conduction band electrons. Optically polarized spins are split into two packets by passing through two arms of the ring in the diffusive transport regime. Optical pumping with circularly polarized light on one arm establishes dynamic nuclear polarization which acts as a local effective magnetic field on electron spins due to the hyperfine interaction. This local field causes one spin packet to precess faster than the other, thereby controlling the spin interference when the two packets are combined., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We use time-resolved Kerr rotation to demonstrate the optical and electronic tuning of both the electronic and local moment (Mn) spin dynamics in electrically gated parabolic quantum wells derived from II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductors. By changing either the electrical bias or the laser energy, the electron spin precession frequency is varied from 0.1 to 0.8 THz at a magnetic field of 3 T and at a temperature of 5 K. The corresponding range of the electrically-tuned effective electron g-factor is an order of magnitude larger compared with similar nonmagnetic III-V parabolic quantum wells. Additionally, we demonstrate that such structures allow electrical modulation of local moment dynamics in the solid state, which is manifested as changes in the amplitude and lifetime of the Mn spin precession signal under electrical bias. Time-resolved optical measurements of electron spin dynamics in modulation doped InGaAs quantum wells are used to explore electron spin coherence times and spin precession frequencies in a regime where an out of plane magnetic field quantizes the states of a two-dimensional electron gas into Landau levels. Oscillatory features in the transverse spin coherence time and effective g-factor as a function of applied magnetic field exhibit a correspondence with Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, illustrating a coupling between spin and orbital eigenstates. We present a theoretical model in which inhomogeneous dephasing due to the population of different Landau levels limits the spin coherence time and captures the essential experimental results., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Spin dynamics of optically excited electrons confined in asymmetric coupled quantum wells are investigated through time resolved Faraday rotation experiments. The inter-well coupling is shown to depend on applied electric field and barrier thickness. We observe three coupling regimes: independent spin precession in isolated quantum wells, incoherent spin transfer between single-well states, and coherent spin transfer in a highly coupled system. We utilize a focused beam of Ga+ ions to define magnetization pinning sites in a ferromagnetic epilayer of (Ga,Mn)As. The nonmagnetic defects locally increase the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energies, by which a domain wall is pinned at a given position. We demonstrate techniques for manipulating domain walls at these pinning sites as probed with the giant planar Hall effect (GPHE). The polarization of conduction electron spins due to an electrical current is observed in strained nonmagnetic semiconductors using static and time-resolved Faraday rotation. The density, lifetime, and orientation rate of the electrically-polarized spins are characterized by a combination of optical and electrical methods. In addition, the dynamics of the current-induced spins are investigated by utilizing electrical pulses generated from a photoconductive switch. We demonstrate the epitaxial growth of optical-quality electrically-gated III-V ferromagnetic quantum structures. Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals that initially unpolarized photoexcited holes in a GaAs quantum well become spin-polarized opposite to the magnetization of an adjacent digital ferromagnetic layer in the AlGaAs barrier. A vertical bias is used to tune the spin polarization from -0.4 to 6.3 percent at T = 5 K and B = 1 kG during which the luminescence becomes quenched, indicating that the polarization is mediated by wave function overlap between heavy holes in the quantum well and Mn-ions in the barrier. Polarization is observed under negligible current flow and is insensitive to the initial spin orientation of the carriers, differentiating the effect from both electrical and optical spin injection., Comment: 13 pages, 1 table, 3 figures (color)
