Abstract

In collaborated online technique traffic prediction methods is proposed with distributed context aware random forest learning algorithm .The random forest is ensemble classifier which learns different traffic and context model form distributed traffic patterns. One major challenge in predicting traffic is how much to rely on the prediction model constructed using historical data in the real-time traffic situation, which may differ from that of the historical data due to the fact that traffic situations are numerous and changing over time. The proposed algorithm is online predictor of real-time traffic, the global prediction is achieved with less convergence time .The distributed scenarios (traffic data and context data) are collected together to improve the learning accuracy of classifier. The conducted experimental results on prediction of traffic dataset prove that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the existing algorithm.

Abstract

The existing knowledge based on the physical characteristics of rubber-based seismic isolators and the validity of assumptions involved in design can be strengthened with shake table tests and field monitoring during earthquakes. Existing structures can be retrofitted with seismic isolators and successful examples are coming up day by day. This paper presents the results of analytical and experimental investigations of a one-third scaled model of a reinforced concrete soft first-storied structure mounted on natural rubber-based isolators and subjected to uniaxial seismic motion. Translational and rocking responses of the scaled model were measured under four different synthetic time histories, covering a wide range of frequencies. Through base isolation, the time period of the horizontal mode is far removed from the peak spectrum but the rocking modes may well be entrapped in the peak region. Hence, a simplified fail-safe system for protection against overturning was also studied. 14. Passive control of seismic response of piping systems

Abstract

Passive energy dissipating devices, such as elastoplastic dampers (EPDs) can be used for eliminating snubbers and reducing the response of piping systems subjected to seismic loads. Cantilever and three-dimensional piping systems were tested with and without EPD on shaker table. Using a finite element model of the piping systems, linear and nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out using Newmark's time integration technique. Equivalent linearization technique, such as Caughey method, is used to evaluate the equivalent damping of the piping systems supported on elastoplastic damper. An iterative response spectrum method is used for evaluating response of the piping system using this equivalent damping. The analytical maximum response displacement obtained at the elastoplastic damper support for the two piping systems is compared with experimental values and time history analysis values. It has been concluded that the iterative response spectrum technique using Caughey equivalent damping is simple and results in reasonably acceptable response of the piping systems supported on EPD. Abstract

The seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames designed for gravity loads is evaluated experimentally using a shake table. Two 1:3 scale models of one-bay, three-storied space frames, one without infill and the other with a brick masonry infill in the first and second floors, are tested under excitation equivalent to the spectrum given in IS 1893-2002. From the measured response of the models during excitation, the shear force, interstory drift, and stiffness are evaluated. The effect of masonry infill on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames is also investigated. Then, the frames are tested to failure. Severe damage is observed in the columns in the ground floor. The damaged columns are strengthened by a reinforced concrete jacket. The frames are again tested under the same earthquake excitations. The test results showed that the retrofitted frames could sustain low to medium seismic forces due to a significant increase in strength and stiffness. Abstract

Development of new technologies for seismic protection will better support the sustainable urban systems. The paper aims in bringing out the efficacy of a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) device in seismic protection of simply supported short span bridges for strong ground motions. The damper cum restraining device with re-centering capabilities, developed within the laboratory has been pilot tested to verify its performance before actual implementation in the site. Experimental and analytical investigations were carried out on an equivalent Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) system for a particular narrow band spectrum representing strong ground motion. From the studies it is found that the developed smart damper is very effective for seismic performance enhancement of critical facilities like bridges thus offering great benefits for the sustainable development of urban systems.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates the usefulness of viscous fluid dampers (VFDs) with toggle bracing mechanism in controlling the vibration of three-storey frame model by comparing their performance with buildings having only diagonally placed VFDs. It has been shown from the studies carried out that provision of VFDs with toggle bracing mechanism at ground floor level would act like vibration dampers. This results in controlling the vibration levels at higher floor levels. The optimum distribution of VFDs with toggle bracing mechanism in three-storey moment resistant steel framed buildings has been studied. For this building frame the placement of VFDs with toggle brace mechanism along the height of the building is found to be effective. The results suggest that the bracing system proposed in this paper can be effectively used in retrofitting of existing buildings and in performance based design of new ones for earthquake loads.
