We present an experimental demonstration of a single-shot, non-destructive electron beam diagnostic based on the ionization of a low-density pulsed gas jet. In our study, 7~MeV electron bunches from a radio frequency (RF) photoinjector, carrying up to 100 pC of charge, traversed a localized distribution of nitrogen gas (N$_2$). The interaction of the electron bunches with the N$_2$ gas generated a correlated signature in the ionized particle distribution, which was spatially magnified using a series of electrostatic lenses and recorded with a micro-channel-plate detector. Various modalities, including point-to-point imaging and velocity mapping, are investigated. A temporal trace of the detector current enabled the identification of single- and double-ionization events. The characteristics of the ionization distribution, dependence on gas density, total bunch charge, and other parameters, are described. Approaches to scaling to higher electron bunch density and energy are suggested. Additionally, the instrument proves useful for comprehensive studies of the ionization process itself., Comment: Phys. The temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) at weakly relativistic beam energies ($\lesssim$ 100 keV) suffers from space-charge induced electron pulse broadening. We describe the implementation of a radio frequency (RF) cavity operating in the continuous wave regime to compress high repetition rate electron bunches from a 40.4 kV DC photoinjector for ultrafast electron diffraction applications. Active stabilization of the RF amplitude and phase through a feedback loop based on the demodulated in-phase and quadrature components of the RF signal is demonstrated. This scheme yields 144$\pm$19 fs RMS temporal resolution in pump-probe studies., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The development of long, tunable structures is critical to increasing energy gain in laser-driven dielectric accelerators (DLAs). Here we combine pulse-front-tilt illumination with slab-geometry structures assembled by precisely aligning off-the-shelf 4~mm long transmission gratings to achieve up to 200 keV energy modulation for 6 MeV injected electrons. The effective interaction length is longer than 1~mm, limited by dephasing of the accelerated particles in the structure. The piezo-based independent mounting system for the gratings allows tuning of the gap and field distribution inside the structure., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In this work, non-destructive virtual diagnostics are applied to retrieve the electron beam time of arrival and energy in a relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) beamline using independently-measured machine parameters. This technique has the potential to improve temporal resolution of pump and probe UED scans. Fluctuations in time of arrival have multiple components, including a shot-to-shot jitter and a long-term drift which can be separately addressed by closed loop feedback systems. A linear-regression-based model is used to fit the beam energy and time of arrival and is shown to be able to predict accurately behavior for both on long and short time scales. More advanced time-series analysis based on machine learning techniques can be applied to improve this prediction further., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures, recent research efforts have been directed towards the long sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real-time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, the correlation between structure, function and previously hidden metastable or nonequilibrium states of matter. Ultrafast electron pulses play an essential role in this scientific endeavor, and their generation has been facilitated by rapid technical advances in both ultrafast laser and particle accelerator technologies. This review presents a summary of the remarkable developments in this field over the last few decades. The physics and technology of ultrafast electron beams is presented with an emphasis on the figures of merit most relevant for ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments. We discuss recent developments in the generation, manipulation and characterization of ultrashort electron beams aimed at improving the combined spatio-temporal resolution of these measurements. The fundamentals of electron scattering from atomic matter and the theoretical frameworks for retrieving dynamic structural information from solid-state and gas-phase samples are described, together with essential experimental techniques and several landmark works. Ultrafast electron probes with ever improving capabilities, combined with other complementary photon-based or spectroscopic approaches, hold tremendous potential for revolutionizing our ability to observe and understand energy and matter at atomic scales., Comment: Manuscript submitted to Review of Modern Physics

Extremely high beam-to-radiation energy conversion efficiencies can be obtained in a THz FEL using a strongly tapered helical undulator at the zero-slippage resonant condition, where a circular waveguide is used to match the radiation group velocity to the electron beam longitudinal velocity. In this paper we report on the first electro-optic sampling (EOS) based measurements of the broadband THz FEL radiation pulses emitted in this regime. The THz field waveforms are reconstructed in the spatial and temporal domains using multi-shot and single-shot EOS schemes respectively. The measurements are performed varying the input electron beam energy in the undulator providing insights on the complex dynamics in a waveguide FEL.

Particle accelerators for high energy physics will generate TeV-scale particle beams in large, multi-Km size machines colliding high brightness beams at the interaction point [1-4]. The high luminosity in such machines is achieved by producing very small asymmetric beam size at the interaction point, with short durations to minimize beam-beam effects. Tuning energy, timing and position of the beam for optimal performance will require high-precision controls of amplitude and phase of high-frequency electromagnetic fields and real-time processing of complex algorithms. The stability of the colliding beams has a large impact on the collider's effective luminosity. Therefore, the technology readiness level of diagnostic and control systems will be a major consideration in the collider design. The technical requirements of such systems depend on the specifics of beam parameters, such as transverse and longitudinal dimensions, charge/pulse and beam pulse format, which are driven by the accelerating technology of choice. While feedback systems with single bunch position monitor resolution below 50 nm and latency <300 ns have been demonstrated in beam test facilities, many advanced collider concepts make use of higher repetition rates, brighter beams and higher accelerating frequencies, and will require better performance, up to 1-2 order of magnitude, demanding aggressive R&D to be able to deliver and maintain the targeted luminosity., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

C$^3$ is an opportunity to realize an e$^+$e$^-$ collider for the study of the Higgs boson at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV, with a well defined upgrade path to 550 GeV while staying on the same short facility footprint. C$^3$ is based on a fundamentally new approach to normal conducting linear accelerators that achieves both high gradient and high efficiency at relatively low cost. Given the advanced state of linear collider designs, the key system that requires technical maturation for C$^3$ is the main linac. This white paper presents the staged approach towards a facility to demonstrate C$^3$ technology with both Direct (source and main linac) and Parallel (beam delivery, damping ring, ancillary component) R&D. In dielectric laser-driven accelerators (DLA), careful tuning of drive-laser wavelength and structure periodicity is typically required in order to hit the resonant condition and match the phase velocity of the accelerating wave to the electron beam velocity. By aggressively detuning (up to 30 mrad) the angle of incidence of the drive laser on a double grating DLA structure, we show that it is possible to recover resonant phase matching and maximize the energy modulation of an externally injected 6 MeV beam in a 800 nm period structure driven using a 780 nm laser. These results show that it is possible to power DLA structures away from their design working point, and excite accelerating fields in the gap with phase profiles that change by a relatively large amount period-to-period. This flexibility is a key feature of DLAs and a critical element in the realization of phase-modulation based ponderomotive focusing to demonstrate MeV energy gain and large capture in a single DLA stage., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

In order to demonstrate acceleration of electrons to relativistic scales by an on chipdielectric laser accelerator (DLA), a ponderomotive focusing scheme capable of capturingand transporting electrons through nanometer-scale apertures over extended interactionlengths has been proposed. We present a Matlab-based numerical code (SHarD) utilizinga spatial harmonic expansion of the fields within the dielectric structure to simulate theevolution of the beam phase space distribution in this scheme. The code can be usedto optimize key-parameters for the accelerator performance such as the final energy,transverse spot size evolution and total number of electrons accelerated through currentlyfabricated structures. In this paper, we use an envelope equation-based approach to obtain analytical scaling laws for the shortest pulse length achievable using radiofrequency (RF) based bunch compression. The derived formulas elucidate the dependencies on the electron beam energy and beam charge and reveal how to obtain bunches containing 1 million electrons with single-digit fs pulse lengths; relativistic energies are strongly desirable. The effect of the non-linearities associated with the RF curvature and the beam propagation in a drift is shown to strongly limit the attainability of extreme compression ratios. Using an additional higher frequency RF cavity is proposed as a method to linearize the bunch compression and enable the generation of ultrashort beams in the sub-femtosecond regime., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

Plasma accelerators can generate ultra high brightness electron beams which open the door to light sources with smaller physical footprint and properties un-achievable with conventional accelerator technology. In this paper we show that electron beams from Plasma WakeField Accelerators (PWFAs) can generate few-cycle coherent tunable soft X-ray pulses with TW peak power and a duration of tens of attoseconds, an order of magnitude more powerful, shorter and with better stability than state-of-the-art X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). Such a light source would significantly enhance the ability to experimentally investigate electron dynamics on ultrafast timescales, having broad-ranging impact across multiple scientific fields. Rather than starting from noise as in typical XFELs, the X-rays emission in this approach is driven by coherent radiation from a pre-bunched, near Mega Ampere (MA) current electron beam of attosecond duration. This relaxes the restrictive tolerances which have hindered progress towards utilizing plasma accelerators as coherent X-ray drivers thus far, presenting a new paradigm for advanced-accelerator light source applications.

In this paper, we discuss effects of space charge fields on imaging performance in a single shot time-resolved electron microscope (TEM). Using a Green's function perturbation method, we derive analytical estimates for the effects of space charge nonlinearity on the image formation process and the associated aberration coefficients. The dependence of these coefficients on the initial beam phase space distribution is elucidated. The results are validated by particle tracking simulations and provide fundamental scaling laws for the trade-off between temporal and spatial resolution in single-shot time-resolved TEM., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Quasi-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are a key platform for exploring emergent nanoscale phenomena arising from complex interactions. Access to the underlying degrees-of-freedom on their natural time scales motivates the use of advanced ultrafast probes sensitive to self-organised atomic-scale patterns. Here, we report the first ultrafast investigation of TaTe2, which exhibits unique charge and lattice trimer order characterised by a transition upon cooling from stripe-like chains into a $(3 \times 3)$ superstructure of trimer clusters. Utilising MeV-scale ultrafast electron diffraction, we capture the photo-induced TaTe2 structural dynamics -- exposing a rapid $\approx\!1.4$ ps melting of its low-temperature ordered state followed by recovery via thermalisation into a hot cluster superstructure. Density-functional calculations indicate that the initial quench is triggered by intra-trimer Ta charge transfer which destabilises the clusters, unlike melting of charge density waves in other TaX2 compounds. Precise manipulation of high brightness electron beams requires detailed knowledge of the particle phase space shape and evolution. As ultrafast electron pulses become brighter, new operational regimes become accessible with emittance values in the picometer range, with enormous impact on potential scientific applications. Here we present a new characterization method for such beams and demonstrate experimentally its ability to reconstruct the 4D transverse beam matrix of strongly correlated electron beams with sub-nanometer emittance and sub-micrometer spot size, produced with the HiRES beamline at LBNL. Our work extends the reach of ultrafast electron accelerator diagnostics into picometer-range emittance values, opening the way to complex nanometer-scale electron beam manipulation techniques.

One of the frontiers of modern electron scattering instrumentation is improving temporal resolution in order to enable the observation of dynamical phenomena at their fundamental time-scales. We analyze how a radiofrequency cavity can be used as an electron longitudinal lens in order to produce a highly magnified temporal replica of an ultrafast process, and, in combination with a deflecting cavity, enable streaked electron images of optical-frequency phenomena. We present start-to-end simulations of an MeV electron beamline for two variations of this idea (a `magnifying-glass' and a `point-projection' configuration) showing the feasibility for an electron probe to achieve single shot 1.4 fs(rms) temporal resolution., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Dielectric laser acceleration draws upon nano-fabrication techniques to build photonic structures for high gradient electron acceleration. At the small spatial scales characteristic of these structures conventional accelerator techniques become ineffective at stabilizing the beam dynamics. Instead we propose a scheme to stabilize the motion by directly modulating the drive laser, in analogy to a radio-frequency-quadrupole. Here we present a design for a programmable `lattice' being built at UCLA's Pegasus laboratory. One of the frontiers in electron scattering is to couple ultrafast temporal resolution with highly localized probes to investigate the role of microstructure on material properties. Here, taking advantage of the unprecedented average brightness of the APEX electron gun providing relativistic electron pulses at high repetition rates, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of ultrafast relativistic electron beams with picometer-scale emittance and their ability to probe nanoscale features on materials with complex microstructures. At the sample plane, the APEX beam is tightly focused by a custom in-vacuum lens system based on permanent magnet quadrupoles, and its evolution around the waist is tracked by a knife-edge technique, allowing accurate reconstruction of the beam shape and local density. We then use the focused beam to characterize a Ti-6 wt\% Al polycrystalline sample by correlating the diffraction and imaging modality, showcasing the capability to locate grain boundaries and map adjacent crystallographic domains with sub-micron precision. This work provides a new paradigm for ultrafast electron instrumentation, demonstrating the ability to generate relativistic beams with ultrasmall transverse phase space volumes enabling novel characterization techniques such as relativistic ultrafast electron nano-diffraction and ultrafast scanning transmission electron microscopy.

We outline the fundamental coherent radiation emission processes from a bunched charged particles beam. In contrast to spontaneous emission of radiation from a random electron beam that is proportional to the number of particles, a pre-bunched electron beam can emit spontaneously coherent radiation proportional to the number of particles - squared, through the process of (spontaneous) superradiance (SP-SR) (in the sense of Dicke's). The coherent SP-SR emission of a bunched electron beam can be even further enhanced by a process of stimulated-superradiance (ST-SR) in the presence of a seed injected radiation field. In this review, these coherent radiation emission processes for both single bunch and periodically bunched beams are considered in a model of radiation mode expansion. The general model of coherent spontaneous emission is extended to the nonlinear regime, particularly for undulator (wiggler) interaction: Tapering-Enhanced Stimulated Superradiant Amplification (TESSA). Processes of SP-SR and TESSA take place in tapered wiggler seed-injected FELs. In such FELs, operating in the X-Ray regime, these processes are convoluted with other effects. However these fundamental emission concepts are useful guidelines for the strategy of wiggler tapering efficiency and power enhancement. Based on this model, we review previous theories and experiments on coherent radiation sources based on SP-SR (coherent undulator radiation, synchrotron radiation, Smith-Purcell radiation etc.), in the THz regime and on-going works on tapered wiggler efficiency-enhancement concepts in all optical frequency regimes up to X-Rays., Comment: 109 pages, 34 figures

The operation of photoemission electron sources with wavelengths near the photoemission threshold has been shown to dramatically decrease the minimum achievable photocathode emittance, but at the cost of significantly reduced quantum efficiency (QE). In this work, we show that for femtosecond laser and electron pulses, the increase in required laser intensities due to the low QE drives the photocathode electronic distribution far from static equilibrium. We adapt an existing dynamic model of the electron occupation under high intensity laser illumination to predict the time-dependent effects of the nonequilibrium electron distribution on the QE, mean transverse energy (MTE), and emission brightness of metal phtocathodes. We find that multiphoton photoemission dramatically alters the MTE as compared to thermal equilibrium models, causing the MTE to no longer be a monotonic function of photon excess energy., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

THz radiation promises breakthrough advances in compact advanced accelerators due to the high frequency and GV/m fields achievable, orders of magnitude larger than in conventional radiofrequency (RF) based accelerators. Compared to laser-driven schemes, the large phase acceptances of THz-driven accelerators are advantageous for operation with sizable charge. Despite burgeoning research, THz sources, particularly laser-based ones, cannot yet compete with the efficiency of RF amplifiers for high average current accelerators. Nevertheless, THz-based phase space manipulation is of immediate interest for a variety of applications, including generation and diagnostics of ultrashort bunches for electron diffraction/microscopy and compact free-electron laser applications. The challenge of maintaining overlap and synchronism between an electron beam and short laser-generated THz pulse has so far limited interactions to the few mm scale. We discuss a novel scheme for simultaneous group and phase velocity matching of nearly single-cycle THz radiation with a relativistic electron beam for meter-scale interaction. We demonstrate energy modulations of up to 150 keV using modest THz pulse energies (up to 1 uJ). We apply this large and efficient energy exchange for beam compression and time-stamping of a relativistic beam, paving the way towards realizing the unique opportunities enabled by laser-based THz accelerators., Comment: Added references

Ultralow emittance ($\leq20$ nm, normalized) electron beams with $10^5$ electrons per bunch are obtained by tightly focusing an ultrafast ($\sim$ 100 fs) laser pulse on the cathode of a 1.6 cell radiofrequency photoinjector. Taking advantage of the small initial longitudinal emittance, a downstream velocity bunching cavity is used to compress the beam to $<10$ fs rms bunch length. The measurement is performed using a thick high voltage deflecting cavity which is shown to be well-suited to measure ultrashort durations of bunching beams, provided that the beam reaches a ballistic longitudinal focus at the cavity center.

We present results of an experiment where, using a 200 GW CO2 laser seed, a 65 MeV electron beam was decelerated down to 35 MeV in a 54 cm long strongly tapered helical magnetic undulator, extracting over 30$\%$ of the initial electron beam energy to coherent radiation. These results demonstrate unparalleled electro-optical conversion efficiencies for a relativistic beam in an undulator field and represent an important step in the development of high peak and average power coherent radiation sources., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

High conversion efficiency between electrical and optical power is highly desirable both for high peak and high average power radiation sources. In this paper, we discuss a new mechanism based on stimulated superradiant emission in a strongly tapered undulator whereby an optimal undulator tapering is calculated by dynamically matching the resonant energy variation to the ponderomotive decelerating gradient. The method has the potential to allow the extraction of a large fraction (~50%) of power from a relativistic electron beam and convert it into coherent narrow-band tunable radiation, and shows a clear path to very high average power radiation sources., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
