Building accidents and fatalities are prevalent, especially in rising nations like Ghana, despite rapid technical developments. Weak regulations, training, and change resistance typically undermine traditional safety measures. This study aimed to identify potential obstacles that prevent the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in construction health and safety in Ghana. A survey research approach was employed to get the study population, which consisted of 110 construction experts made up of project managers, site engineers, skilled workers, and safety officers complete the questionnaire. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square, and regression. According to varied demographic responses, AI increases design and engineering, safety and security, and human resources efficiency, decision-making, and safety. Lack of innovation culture, training, and regulation harms health and safety. Using AI promises to overcome these hurdles by minimising risks, improving worker well-being, and safe work environment. The Ghanaian industry study focus and small sample size may prejudice, as the limitations of the study. Samples must be larger and more diversified to generalise. The practical implication is that Ghanaian builders may use the study’s findings. Understanding AI’s potential and limitations helps them develop AI solutions and problem-solving methodologies. Safety, cost, and worker well-being can improve. The successful integration of AI in construction health and safety can affect society. AI can reduce workplace accidents and improve productivity, well-being, and healthcare costs. This work adds to the growing body of knowledge on AI’s building safety applications in emerging economies like Ghana. It identifies environmental restrictions and enables governments, industry leaders, and researchers to develop and implement AI solutions.

The occurrence of variations in building construction contracts is a subject that needs some attention in public sector projects. They are, almost all the time, detrimental rather than beneficial variations. The paper aimed to identify the nature of variations in government-initiated building projects over fourteen years, from 2000 to 2014, in the Central Region and their impacts. Preliminary counts of documents revealed that a total of 348 projects were executed over the period. The data collection process started by first sorting out files, contract documents, and payment certificates for the period under consideration. These documents were scrutinised one after the other to detect possible variations. The inclusion criterion for selecting a project was if a project had any form of variation(s) recorded. After thoroughly examining these 348 project documents, 84 were found to have variations. The study identified additional works and substitutions as the most inherent variations in public building projects in the Central Region. About 85 % of the variations found in the 84 projects with various forms of variations were additional works and substitutions. It was revealed that the cost of multiple variations was higher than single variations. Projects with multiple variations had high percentage variation and durations than others. Percentage variation in some instances was 400 %. The study identified that multiple variations were more costly than single variations. The highest variation cost identified was (USD 211 864.41 or EUR 183 150.18) for one project. The study identified the nature of variations that usually occurred in government building projects and their association with both cost and time. The study asserts that the presence of multiple change orders has substantial financial significance and should be diligently avoided through efficient project initiation and planning.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are construction workers’ most prevalent occupational diseases due to awkward body posture, high repetition of work and vibration. The study sought to examine the different types of ergonomic moves that could improve construction workers’ performance. Findings show that majority of the workers were males and their trade groups cut across different trade groups (masonry, carpentry, plumbing, and electricals). There was a scarcity of civil engineers and quantity surveyors in almost all the construction firms. The most influential factors that contributed to musculoskeletal injuries among construction workers were extreme temperature, static posture and exertion of force at work. These factors have contributed to the loss of concentration and absenteeism at work, which have also led to delays in the execution of work. Further findings show that engineering control measures should be employed, and training and education should also be given to workers to prevent MSDs among employees to enable them to work smarter but not harder to improve their performance. Employers should include education and specific task training in the company’s policy for all newly employed personnel. Workers should also be monitored to ensure that they take a recess during the day’s work.

The construction industry is known for its task-related risks and hazards contributing to occupational stress and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The study sought to identify the impact of MSDs among concrete mixer operators and workers in the construction industry in the Central Region of Ghana. The population for the study was made up of 28 concrete mixer operators and 187 workers. Out of the 215 questionnaires administered, 206 questionnaires were returned which represented 95.8 % of the response rate. Descriptive statistics and Relative Importance Index (RII) were used for the data analysis. Findings show that most of the workers were young males and worked for a longer period a day. Force movement, repetition, awkward bending and fixed body postures were the major factors leading to the development of MSDs and contributed to frequent absenteeism and poor performance of workers. Further findings show that back pain, waist pain and shoulder pain were the major self-reported MSD complaints. Risk assessment should be conducted on all site hazards and ergonomic tools/equipment should be introduced to reduce the impact of MSDs on workers.

The rate of construction accidents in the Ghanaian construction industry is not encouraging. The study sought to identify the factors affecting the effective health and safety practices in the construction industry within the Cape Coast Metropolis. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the construction firms and ‘Yamane formula’ to arrive at the number of respondents (44) for the study. Structured questionnaires were distributed among site engineers, site supervisors, safety officers, quantity surveyors, foremen, chief masons and chief carpenters. Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for the data analysis and results were presented in a form of descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings show that the level of health and safety practices within the Metropolis was high and the factors that affected the implementation of health and safety programmes were severe among the firms. Few of the company’s health and safety programmes were effective and this calls for the strengthenig of the construction sector policy by the ministries responsible for implementation.

Skilled labour shortage is the shortfall of workforce in specific trades or shortage of workforce with requisite skills. The paper seeks to identify areas where there are skilled labour shortages in the building construction industry within the Central Region. A survey research approach was employed to get the study population that consisted of project managers, site engineers, site foremen and engineers working with contactors. Questionnaires were designed based on the research specific objectives and used as the main instrument for data collection. Findings from the study revealed that the shortage of skilled manpower was from painters and decorators, electricians and tile workers. Further findings showed that skilled labour shortage was caused by socio–economic conditions, external forces, job attractiveness, job characteristics, job satisfaction, industry limitations and personal factors. Employees should be encouraged to develop their trade competences and change their attitude to work, while employers should build their manpower base through training.

The integration of artificial Intelligence (AI) in the construction industry holds significant promise for enhancing various aspects of project management and execution. AI offers unprecedented opportunities for streamlining processes, enhancing productivity, and elevating safety standards. The study explored AI implementation opportunities and how AI technologies can drive innovation, enhance decisionmaking processes, and propel the sector toward a more efficient and digitised future in the construction industry. To fill the gap, the study adopted a quantitative research approach to offer a holistic assessment of the effects and opportunities for the advancement of AI in Ghanaian construction settings. Based on the quantitative survey data obtained from 97 participants from 10 construction companies in the Central Region of Ghana and the literature review, the study revealed several benefits of AI implementation. The importance of using AI has been seen in design and planning, safety management, and the quality of delivered projects. Regression analysis also expands on the relationships between the identified AI-based efficiencies, underlining that increased utilisation can enhance productivity and safety and reduce adverse environmental impacts. Further, in the context of Ghana, the study outlined areas of importance for constructing AI in the construction industry: construction monitoring, energy efficiency, and supply chain. These findings have depicted the sector's awareness of AI and its value as a tool for improving effectiveness in operations and implementing sustainable measures. Overall, the knowledge generated by this study proves beneficial for directing strategic planning and advancing innovation in the context of the Ghanaian construction industry. In as much as it acknowledges the gap and the prevailing theoretical literature, it ushers in a guide for availing AI-driven growth in the construction sector in terms of productivity, quality, and sustainability in Ghana and the global space. The public buildings experience poor maintenance, and this is sometimes attributed to neglect and lack of funds, and this results in a decline, user dissatisfaction, and a cycle of neglect again. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the maintenance practices of some selected public buildings in the Central Region of Ghana. A mix of stratified and random sampling techniques was used to select 80 (maintenance personnel and users) respondents from the Development Offices of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) in Ghana. The questionnaires were administered online, and quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 and Microsoft Excel with descriptive statistics and correlations. The study results revealed that maintenance-related cultural factors were appreciated most as compared to other factors like teamwork and collaboration. Increased community participation may also be brought about through campaigns and partnerships. New technologies for building health monitoring were considered as appropriate investments, while funds for training the maintenance personnel were deemed necessary. The study reveals gaps in bureaucracy, planning, and roles and responsibilities in Ghana's maintenance culture. It calls for a comprehensive strategy to improve this culture, including funding, reducing red tape, embracing technology, and promoting public awareness and staff development. Clear roles and responsibilities, along with performance indicators, are also crucial. The study, targeting the Central Region, helps understand regional disparities in challenges and opportunities. It uses a mixedmethods approach and considers individual and organizational levels to understand maintenance activities in a developing environment. Although the sample size may limit generalization, the study provides valuable information for policymakers and facility managers aiming to prolong the lifespan and minimize maintenance costs of public buildings in Ghana. There is a significant change in the Ghanaian construction sector, driven by the convergence of emerging trends. The study investigated the underlying factors influencing these emerging trends in the Ghanaian construction industry, focusing on both pull and push factors. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining survey data with qualitative analysis, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the drivers shaping the industry's development. The study was conducted within three cities (Cape Coast, Kasoa, and Winneba) in the Central Region of Ghana. Fifteen (15) construction companies were purposively selected based on their interest in technological advancements within the construction ecosystem. Five (5) categories of construction professionals, project managers, quantity surveyors, architects, structural engineers, safety officers, and site supervisors employed by the aforementioned fifteen (15) construction companies were considered for the study. Data collected were analyzed utilizing SPSS software version 20. Push factors highlighted environmental degradation, technological innovation, and infrastructure renewal as significant motivators. Pull factors emphasized the industry's extrinsic motivations, including community development, cultural considerations, and economic growth. The analysis revealed that both push and pull factors play crucial roles in driving the trends within the industry. Qualitative interviews conducted as part of the study provided deeper insights, identifying six key themes: regulatory compliance and market competition, technological advancements, skill development, economic considerations, leadership and strategic vision, and customer demand. These themes underscore the complex relationship between external pressures and internal motivations. Correlation and regression analyses indicated significant relationships between trend recognition and both push and pull factors, emphasizing the interplay between external pressures and aspirational drivers in shaping industry trends. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamic forces driving change in the Ghanaian construction sector, offering substantial insights for stakeholders. These insights can help stakeholders navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities for sustainable growth and development. The findings underscore the importance of balancing technological advancements with socio-economic goals to foster a robust and forward-thinking construction industry in Ghana. Corruption in road sector procurement is becoming devastating by the day. The paper sought to identify causes, most prevalent corruption, opportunities, reasons for engaging in corruption, and measures for fighting the menace in the road sector. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the various institutions because they are the government agencies responsible for the country's rural, urban and highway networking. The selection of the respondents was done using a snowball sampling technique. Out of ninety-two questionnaires administered, eighty were returned, representing an 87% response rate. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Excel software were used for the data analysis. A conducive and enabling work environment was found to be the major cause of corruption in road procurement. The most prevalent corruption identified was indirect payments, inappropriate gifts, hospitality, entertainment, and travel. Lack of financial control was attributed to the surge in corruption in the road sector. The key reasons procurement officials engage in corruption are the benefits they gain when they succeed and the lack of monitoring, supervision, and sanctions. Respondents claimed that senior management commitment, clear communication of guidelines and policies, and taking action against perpetrators are the main measures for subduing corruption. These institutions' internal control mechanisms, institutional frameworks, and structures should be strengthened to minimise procurement corruption. The paper identifies the salient issues of corruption that future policies can help to curb. Corruption within the road sector can be suppressed by eliminating bad cultural practices and business methods. Top management would need a highlevel commitment to clamp down on illicit behaviours to set the tone for elevated ethical standards that frown upon corrupt practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is becoming an increasing public health problem. A study that reviewed patients receiving treatment in hemodialysis centers reported 79.2% of patients from Jigawa State to be managed for CKD. This study aimed to find the factors associated with CKD among adults from high-burden kidney disease areas of Jigawa State. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study design that utilized mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) of data collection (sequential explanatory) was used to study eligible respondents from the four local government areas (LGAs) reported to have a high burden of kidney disease. The modified WHO STEPS questionnaire, key informant interview, and in-depth interview guides were employed to collect information from the eligible selected community members. Multistage and purposive sampling techniques were used, and data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0 with a statistical significance set at P ≤ 0.05. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative interviews. Results: The age of the respondents ranged from 18 to 102 years, with a median of 45 (interquartile range = 30–80) years. The period prevalence over the past five years (2018–2023) of having kidney disease in the family was 67 (18.6%), while the point prevalence (currently having a patient with kidney disease) was 51 (14.1%). In terms of the distribution of cases by LGAs, Jahun reported more cases, 33.3% in the family within the last five years, followed by Hadejia 18.7%. In the same vein, respondents from Jahun 28.9% and Hadejia 16.5% reported more current cases of kidney disease in the family. The prevalence of ever had patient with chronic kidney disease in the family was significantly higher among those with systolic hypertension (BP) ≥140 mmHg (29.3%, P < 0.001). Elevated systolic BP was significantly associated with currently having a kidney disease patient (23.3%, P = 0.001). The interviews revealed late presentation and noncompliance to medications among those with risk factors as the perceived facilitators of kidney disease. Conclusions: The prevalence of kidney disease was alarming in the high-burden kidney disease areas. The government should develop a sustainable model for mass community screening of risk factors and community-based health insurance to effectively manage all identified cases.

Background: The increasing cases of chronic kidney disease is a global public health concern. The potential link between consumption of food contaminated with heavy metals and development of end stage renal disease is becoming an emerging challenge. This study aimed to identify heavy metal contaminants in food and environmental risk factors for development of chronic kidney disease in Nigeria. Methods: Cross-sectional survey in 4 high burden local government areas of Jigawa state, northwest Nigeria. Results: The median age of the respondents was 45 years (interquartile range = 30–80) years. All the households had normal values of cadmium in the food analyzed. The majority of households (97.8%) had elevated mercury levels in analyzed food. Approximately 4.2% of households had increased lead levels. Elevated mercury levels were significantly higher in households that did not cultivate the food they consumed (median = 2.503 mg/kg, P = .05), those that did not use fertilizer on their farms (median = 2.522 mg/kg, P = .02), and those whose farms were located outside their communities (median = 2.733 mg/kg, P = .020). Households that did not use fertilizer on the farm (median = 0.027 mg/kg, P = .007), and those that primarily consumed rice (median = 0.023 mg/kg, P = .005) had significantly higher lead concentrations. Conclusions: We identified high levels of mercury in food samples of the majority of the households studied. Elevated levels of mercury were associated with food cultivation practices and fertilizer use. We recommend future studies that will identify points of food contamination and inform the development of appropriate environmental remediation measures.

Background: Dysglycaemia and diabetes mellitus (DM) are important and preventable risk factors associated with kidney diseases, cardiovascular complications, and mortality worldwide. Aim: This study aimed to identify the prevalence and factors associated with dysglycaemia and diabetes among adults in high-burden kidney disease areas of Jigawa State, Northwest Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of representative sample of 361 adults, aged ≥18 years, was conducted in four local government areas (LGAs) of Jigawa State, considered to have a high burden of kidney disease requiring hemodialysis. Data were collected using a modified World Health Organization STEPS questionnaire using a multistage sampling technique and were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 22.0, with statistical significance set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: The minimum age of the respondents was 18 and the maximum was 102 with a median of 45 (interquartile range = 30–80) years. The majority of the respondents 89.5% were >24 years of age. The prevalence of dysglycemia and DM in the high-burden LGAs was 10.5% and 3.6%, respectively. Dutse LGA had the highest prevalence of dysglycemia 16.7%, followed by Hadejia LGA with a prevalence of 12.2%. On the other hand, Hadejia LGA had the highest prevalence of DM 7.7%, followed by Jahun LGA with a prevalence of 3.3%. Age ≥40 years, family histories of diabetes, being overweight, alcohol ingestion, and previous blood sugar tests were identified as factors associated with DM. The odds of developing diabetes were significantly higher among those with a reported history of alcohol consumption, family history of diabetes, and overweight. Conclusion: Dysglycaemia and diabetes are significant public health problems, and many people who have the conditions are unaware they have them. Family history of diabetes, alcohol ingestion, and overweight are important risk factors. The government and all the relevant stakeholders should prioritize community screening and other relevant interventions for early detection and timely management of cases.

Possessing adequate knowledge of a given market or business environment is required for the success or growth of a company. The study aims at determining the variables that influence the growth of small and medium sized contractors' in Cape Coast Metropolis. A questionnaire survey was employed in the study to obtain the required data from professionals made up of building and civil engineering contractors. Out of the two hundred questionnaires administered, only one hundred and twenty-one were returned and represented 60.5%. The study identified six factors, three each from building stable teamwork and appropriate management systems) to be the most influential factors that affect the growth of building contractors in Cape Coast Metropolis. Both factors were found to be strong indicators for building contractors' growth. Hence, the need to strengthen the various factors of growth in designing a policy guideline for building contractors.
