Abstract

This study revealed the incidence of neonatal jaundice in the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital Jakarta to be 32.1%, i.e 42.97% in low birth weight infants and 29.70% in fulllerm infants. No pathological basis was proven in many cases. The factors which may cause pathological jaundice according to the frequency are as follows: infections, anoxia and hypoxia, hemolysis due to G6PD deficiency, multiple factors and hypoglycemia etc. This study also revealed that 69.5% of jaundiced infants had bilirubin concentration of more than 10 mg%. Analysis of the factors showed that most of them were preventable.

Abstract

Within 10 years (1964 - 1974) two hundred and twenty one thalassemic children were observed in the Department of Child Health, Medical School, University of Indonesia in Jakarta. They consisted of 119 cases of thalassemia major, 95 thalassemia Hb E disease, 6 Hb H disease and 1 thalassemia Hb S disease. The main treatment of thalassemia major is still blood transfusion. Splenectomy was performed on 29 children with thalassemia major and 26 cases with thalassemia Hb E disease. Splenectomy performed on cases before hypersplenism appeared, showed better results then those late cases who have already symptoms of hypersplenism. Beside the medical points of view thalassemia has also many social aspects to be considered, those of the child itself, the parents and the society or community.

Abstract

We assessed the prevalence of HLA-B27 among ethnic Indonesian and Indonesian Chinese patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or related spondyloarthropathies, and also among healthy controls. HLA-B27 was found in 23 (62.2%) of 37 Chinese patients and 4% of 176 Chinese healthy controls (p < 0.001). In contrasts only 2 (8.3%) of 24 native Indonesian patients and 13 (9%) of 145 healthy controls were HLA-B27+, indicating the lack of association of HLA-B27 with spondyloarthropathies in native Indonesians. These findings also suggest that HLA-B27 Chinese Indonesians carry a greater relative risk of developing AS and related spondyloarthropathies than native Indonesians, although the prevalence of HLA-B27 in the general population is more than 2 times higher in native Indonesians.
