Abstract

Minimization of the cost of generation for any utilities is crucial to ensure the utilities will be able to maintain continuous supply and their survivability. Non-optimal amount of power generated by all generating stations in a country will possibly lead to monetary loss and ineffective operation of the power system. Thus, a robust and reliable optimization technique is the prerequisite to ensuring the lowest cost of generation can be achieved. This paper proposes a hybridized optimization technique that integrates the element of evolutionary programming (EP) into the barnacle mating optimizer (BMO), termed Hybrid Evolutionary Programming-Barnacles Mating Optimization (HEBMO). HEBMO is utilized to address the convex economic dispatch in a power transmission system. Its implementation on the IEEE 30-Bus Reliability Test System (RTS) in addressing the convex ED is remarkable, through the comparison with the traditional EP and BMO. The cost of generations in chosen cases such as base case conditions, stress conditions due to real power, and reactive power increments revealed the superiority of the proposed HEBMO over EP and BMO. 31. Swarm Intelligence Approach for Angle Stability Improvement of PSS and SVC-Based SMIB

Abstract

This paper discusses the effect of multi-objective function in angle stability improvement for a single machine connected to an infinite bus system (SMIB). Minimum damping ratio, ξminand maximum damping factor, σmaxwhich are commonly used to indicate oscillatory stability condition in power system are merge in certain ratio to produce a multi-objective function, FMO. This new index brings the advantages of the two indices without compromising the weakness of the index involved. In this study, FMOis applied to tune parameters of static var compensator with proportional-integral-derivative controller (SVC-PID) to improve damping efficiency in SMIB. The result is compared with a system connected to power system stabilizer attached with lead lag controller (PSS-LL). The parameters of SVC-PID and PSS-LL are optimized by particle swarm optimization method. Validation based on speed response, phase plane and determination of eigenvalues confirms that the proposed FMOis more effective for solving angle stability problems compared to single objective function.

Abstract

As the load demand in a power system increases, power system operators struggle to maintain the power system to be operated within its acceptable limits. If no mitigation actions are taken, a power system may suffer from voltage collapse, which in turn leads to blackout. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices can be employed to help improve the voltage profile of the power system. This paper presents the implementation of Chaotic Immune Symbiotic Organism Search (CISOS) optimization technique to solve optimal Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) in a power system for voltage profile improvement. Validation process are conducted on IEEE 26-bus RTS resulting in the capability of CISOS in solving the allocation problem with a better voltage profile. Comparative studies conducted with respect to Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Evolutionary Programming (EP) has revealed the superiority of CISOS over PSO and EP in solving the optimal allocation problem by producing optimal solution with a better voltage profile. The results and information obtained from this study can help power system operator in terms of optimal compensation in power system as well as improving the operation of a power system.

Abstract

The increasing electricity demand in transmission system has caused the power transmission system experiencing stress condition. This phenomenon has forced the system to need urgent additional supply to maintain system adequacy, in particular the de-regulated power system environment. Distributed generation (DG) has been identified as one of the possible solutions to address this issue. DG installation has the capability to reduce transmission loss and improve the voltage profile. This paper presents evolutionary programming (EP) technique for optimizing the sizing and locations in DG installation. In this study, several DGs have been installed to address the voltage profile improvement and loss minimization; implemented on the IEEE 30-Bus Reliability Test System (RTS). Results obtained from the study revealed that, installation of multi-DGs in a transmission system has significantly minimized the transmission loss along with voltage profile improvement.

Abstract

The energy and natural resources ministry (KeTSA) of Malaysia has introduced the net energy metering (NEM) 3.0, which provides anopportunity for consumers to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems toreduce electricity bills. The NEM 3.0 introduces three new initiatives that offer 500 MW quota from 2021 till 2023. NEM has been implemented since2016, replacing the feed-in tariff (FiT) strategy by promoting the users toutilize the generated energy in the first place before selling any surplus to theutility. As in the FiT strategy, users can only sell the generated energy at afixed rate without utilizing it. This paper presents the comparative studybetween NEM and FiT for 496 kWp solar photovoltaic systemin UiTMSegamat, Johor in the perspective of economy and energy practice basedonthe simulation result of MATLAB/Simulink software.
