The phenomenon that is happening now is very much attracting the attention of many people, one of which is in the world of music, there are many changes that occur from time to time. This paper aims to analyze several new variants of music or renewal of old music that are present in the Middle East community. There are many factors that influence the entry of this new variant of music, one of which is the modernization system from the government. There are many goals that are presented for the procurement of new music in the form of concerts, a lot of speculation comes both positive and negative because of the emergence of a new culture that has never been present among Middle Eastern people. In the phenomenon of modernization in the Middle East, there is an interesting thing, namely the existence of internal and external factors for the emergence of this latest musical variant. There are many inner conflicts that are felt by young people about government policies, so they use social media for communication to discuss the new order regarding the new variant of music.

The Italian school legislation supports the educational use of music from preschool to lower secondary school for the improvement of skills included in the student’s profile at the end of the first cycle of education. In the framework of inclusive education, musical teaching is part of the school’s commitment to promote the development of academic skills, executive functions, self-regulation as well as emotional, affective, and social dimensions. All those elements are needed for improving learning and developing attitudes towards the consideration of the differences. This work presents an umbrella review of the evidence on the effectiveness of educational musical activities for the improvement of cognitive skills, socio-emotional skills, and school performance from pupils attending K-12 as well as the factors that are relevant for improving the quality of music interventions in school. The review includes meta-analyses already conducted on the effectiveness of music and presents the method adopted for searching, selecting, and coding the studies. By reviewing the evidence, it emerges the need to carry out new research in the field of music teaching that should be more rigorous in the method than the ones included in this umbrella review.

- Abstract
In the orchestral string world, the left-hand is primarily responsible for pitch while the right-hand is accountable for much of the remaining elements of music including tone, dynamics, articulations, and phrasing. While many orchestral string methods focus primarily on pitch and reading music, tone production is often neglected. Few resources address the use of the right-hand isolated from the left-hand. Those resources that are available address only one instrument at a time, so classroom use is impractical. Furthermore, many students in the United States only receive instruction from their public school teachers, who often do not have extensive experience on a student’s particular instrument. The result is dominated materials and students lacking a beautiful, resonate, stylistically appropriate sound quality. The method introduced in this document—Bowing Drills: Highly Adaptable Exercises for All Ages—develops bowing technique to the equivalent proficiency of string players’ left-hand skills. By isolating the bow with several exercises, teachers can quickly improve their students’ tone, timing, clarity, and ensemble playing. This method focuses on bowing through string crossings aimed at helping beginners who cannot read music to advanced students who are perfecting their tone. Five basic bowing patterns that isolate string crossings on adjacent strings, skipping strings, and double stops are used to improve bowing performance at increasing tempi. The patterns are highly adaptable and can be used for individual or group warm-ups and practice exercises, or to improve basic to complex orchestral bowing passages. Variations are limitless and easily adaptable. By using the concepts found in Bowing Drills, teachers can create their own exercises to address any bowing, articulation, dynamic, style, adding in the left-hand and more. Additionally, the traditional orchestra educational system in the United States is filled with barriers, including the prohibitive costs of instruments, materials, and private lessons, as well as the background knowledge needed to understand technical concepts found in many methods. Bowing Drills is a free-use resource suitable for school orchestras, private lessons, collegiate applied lessons, and more. Because there is no cost, students only need to know their open strings to play. Financial and knowledge-based barriers are removed from the method. In this document I cover the need for a new method and existing materials that can be supplemented with Bowing Drills. I will also teach the five basic bowing patterns of the method, how to adapt the patterns for your individual teaching needs, and how to isolate learned skills and scaffold in new concepts through easily memorizable exercises. Additionally, this document contains double bass-specific bowing patterns and I apply the concepts to standard double bass literature.

Institutions do not only limit their activities within the framework of their missions and visions. In addition, they continue their social responsibility activities. Social responsibility is for institutions to act in the interest of society, taking into account ethical values. Education is one of the most important social institutions that shape the fields of activity in this direction. Education is a social institution that ensures social equality and transitions between social classes. Thus, individuals can move from lower socio-economic level to upper classes. This mobility takes place not only with the functions of educational institutions but also with social responsibility projects of institutions. In this context, Trakya University carries out projects for the quality and continuity of the education life of disadvantaged students with low socio-economic level. One of these is the "You Are My Future" project. The project is based on the idea that music education plays an important role in the psychological development of the child as well as his mental functions, and the child, who provides internal satisfaction through music education, gains both a healthy spiritual development and a proper personality structure. This project study is presented as a case study. In this study, with the project titled “You are My Future”, which was carried out within Trakya University, it was investigated how positive changes in disadvantaged children by taking instrument and singing training.

DISCOURSE analysis , *SOCIAL context , *GESTURE , *MAGIC , *SONGS - Abstract
The word, materialized in music, produces effects, either of enchantment or strangeness, on the subjects who hear it. From specific production conditions, music fulfills, over time, the role of transmission of values, customs and habits. Thus, it is commonly used within the family for entertainment, educational activities, games, theater, reading, dynamics, among others. Thinking about the countless meanings that are inscribed in these songs, this work proposes a gesture of listening to the sayings that materialize in children’s songs, having as theoreticalmethodological support the Discourse Analysis of the French line, founded by Michel Pêcheux in the 1960s in France. From this perspective, we take the analytic corpus composed of clippings of discursive sequences of two children’s songs – O pobre e o rico and Com quem será? – for a better understanding of the functioning of memory in the stabilization of certain senses about the subject-child today. Through a critical look, we are interested in this gesture of analysis to produce the questioning of the obviousness of these statements about the child, relatively stable in the social environment, in view of new forms of possible readings on this theme. - Abstract
This study aims to increase the understanding of eurhythmic teaching practices trough the ex- periences of eurhythmic teachers. Drawing on a phenomenological perspective, the research focuses on what emerges from these experiences, as teachers share their insights on eurhyth- mics. Previous studies have explored the impact of eurhythmic teaching on children’s musical expression, instrument and vocal training and the role of the body in a musical learning. Using a phenomenological perspective, the conducted semi-structured interviews with experiences of eurhythmic teachers were analyzed thematically. Key findings illustrate how teachers experi- ence eurhythmics, including the immeasurable, to dare to try the unknown, and entirety. More- over, the findings highlight the importance of practical, embodied experiences of eurhythmics, with a focus on transitions between moments as well as the moments themselves. Discussion of the results situates them in the context of previous research, emphasizing the role of body movement in musical understanding and the unique characteristics of eurhythmic methodology.

- Abstract
Despite the Philippines’ wonderful indigenous music and talents, Manila Baptist and Los Angeles Baptist churches do not utilize indigenous sounds in typical worship practices. This paper contends that the untapped resources of cultural sounds may contribute to a dynamic worship experience that resonates more effectively as Filipino. This study investigates the absence of indigenous sound in two Filipino Baptist churches from Los Angeles and Manila (QC). It analyzes relevant ethnic music components and each church’s response to the fusion of indigenous and traditional music in the worship experience. The explanatory sequential mixed method will focus on an artistic-creative study to determine the inclusion or exclusion of indigenous sounds in the present worship styles practiced in the Philippine urban Baptist church. The research will consider what ethnic musical expressions are adaptable in urban Philippine Baptist churches through a historical overview, analysis of emerging music trends, interviews of church musicians, and comparison of perspectives between Filipino ministries in Los Angeles and Manila. The research will finish with a template for introducing cultural sounds to their worship music. The author hopes that the results of this study will encourage local churches to embrace Filipino sounds and integrate their uniqueness into the worship expressions of the congregation. The research hopes that the training experience will continue to prompt creative and original music to flourish in future Filipino Baptist communities, encouraging a more intuitive connection among fellow Filipinos and a heartfelt response to the gospel through music and culture—“kayang gawin!” (it can be done!).

Objectives: The effects of chronic music auditory stimulation on the cardiovascular system have been investigated in the literature. However, data regarding the acute effects of different styles of music on cardiac autonomic regulation are lacking. The literature has indicated that auditory stimulation with white noise above 50 dB induces cardiac responses. We aimed to evaluate the acute effects of classical baroque and heavy metal music of different intensities on cardiac autonomic regulation. Study design: The study was performed in 16 healthy men aged 18-25 years. All procedures were performed in the same soundproof room. We analyzed heart rate variability (HRV) in time (standard deviation of normal-to-normal R-R intervals [SDNN], root-mean square of differences [RMSSD] and percentage of adjacent NN intervals with a difference of duration greater than 50 ms [pNN50]) and frequency (low frequency [LF], high frequency [HF] and LF/HF ratio) domains. HRV was recorded at rest for 10 minutes. Subsequently, the volunteers were exposed to one of the two musical styles (classical baroque or heavy metal music) for five minutes through an earphone, followed by a five-minute period of rest, and then they were exposed to the other style for another five minutes. The subjects were exposed to three equivalent sound levels (60- 70dB, 70-80dB and 80-90dB). The sequence of songs was randomized for each individual. Results: Auditory stimulation with heavy metal music did not influence HRV indices in the time and frequency domains in the three equivalent sound level ranges. The same was observed with classical baroque musical auditory stimulation with the three equivalent sound level ranges. Conclusion: Musical auditory stimulation of different intensities did not influence cardiac autonomic regulation in men.

- Abstract
Music education programs positively impact the lives of students both socially and emotionally. As the following research suggests, music may have an even greater impact on students with disabilities or exceptionalities. Due to the lack of accessibility, funding, time, training, and other issues, opportunities in music education programs may be limited to groups of students who may not fit the standard music education student profile. As teachers of common core classes may struggle to accommodate students with exceptionalities and may feel as if they are lacking in resources or other needed preparation to adequately serve these students, these struggles are also present in the music classroom. This can potentially inhibit an exceptional student from being involved in a music program or limit the student’s opportunity to participate. The aim of this study is to show why students with exceptionalities may be limited in their involvement in music programs and to help uncover issues that may impede students with exceptionalities from readily participating in music programs to the same extent as students without disabilities. The study’s purpose is to inform music educators and decision makers that music is an all-encompassing subject that should be accessible to all students.

This article analyzes the arrival and reception of the punk movement in the city of Medellín. It takes its music, aesthetics, and symbolism as historical records in order to thus show the reality of a sector of the city’s marginal youth during the 80s. It shows how neglect on the part of the state, the breakdown of traditional institutions, the levels of poverty, and the overwhelming violence in that decade led young people to seek new means of expression and socialization. In that context, certain youths sought an outlet in music. Music permitted many of them to self-determine their lives and through it and its ideological content they renewed forms of political and social representation. In this sense, punk represents a cultural rupture that marks the establishment of a new path for excluded youths.

- Abstract
Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 is widely considered to be a canonic work within chamber string repertoire. Composed when Mendelssohn was just sixteen years old, the Octet was described as “a different kind of art” by contemporary Louis Spohr because of its use of eight independent parts coming together in a collaborative nature rather than approaching the work as two quartets in an antiphonal setting. Knowing that Mendelssohn himself arranged a portion of this work for full orchestra, it is not a leap for this work to be transcribed in other capacities. Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 lends itself very well to a transcription utilizing a double woodwind quintet in the same collaborative nature for which Mendelssohn originally conceived the piece. With only two original compositions exclusively for winds and only a small percentage of the works in his canon previously transcribed or arranged for winds, this transcription lends an additional opportunity for winds players to experience Mendelssohn. Every effort was made to retain the original intent and maintain compositional integrity with Mendelssohn’s efforts. Adjustments to voicing due to registration, chord voicings due to personnel and instrument limitations, and slight rhythm alterations due to instrument facility were the primary deviations from the composer’s efforts.

In order to better understand the musical properties which elicit an increased sensation of wanting to move when listening to music – groove – we investigate the effect of adding syncopation to simple piano melodies, under the hypothesis that syncopation is correlated to groove. Across two experiments we examine listeners’ experience of groove to synthesized musical stimuli covering a range of syncopation levels and densities of musical events, according to formal rules implemented by a computer algorithm that shifts musical events from strong to weak metrical positions. Results indicate that moderate levels of syncopation lead to significantly higher groove ratings than melodies without any syncopation or with maximum possible syncopation. A comparison between the various trans-formations and the way they were rated shows that there is no simple relation between syncopation magnitude and groove.

- Abstract
[EN] This project has consisted in the creation of eight posters illustrating operas. Eight composers were selected, Mozart, Bizet, Rossini, Offenbach, Donizetti, Gounod and Verdi, to span a range of styles, genres and themes within the world of opera. Exhaustive research of each opera preceded the creation of the posters, making the illustrations the synthesis of each work's plot and its most salient features. The box at the bottom of each poster displays a brief explanation of the opera's context, plot and composer, along with interesting facts about the piece, with the intention of heightening the viewers' appreciation of the work, both in the case of veteran opera-goers or newcomers to the opera or classical music scenes. The designs have been created digitally using separate layers of flat ink, to obtain the photolith film necessary to reproduce the posters with the serigraphy technique. The CMYK color model was chosen for its visual effects, and because it provides for a relatively simple printing process.

- Abstract
The purpose of the study is to present the typology of contemporary methods of playing the flute, classifying them based on the properties of musical expressiveness. The empirical and theoretical approaches to the study were used as the research method. The results of a comprehensive study of experimental pieces for solo flute by foreign authors of the second half of the 20th century indicate new performing techniques become an integral part of the new music and modern composition techniques. In conclusion, the received results are relevant for writing compositions for wind instruments with the use of contemporary playing techniques.

- Abstract
This research was conducted in order to provide information about the effect of sound waves in the growth settings of alfalfa (also known as lucerne) and lentils. Humans have researched about the effect of sound on humans and other animals since the beginning of our time. One of humanity’s oldest research on effects of sound is human communication. In order to expand the research of the effect of sound, this thesis expands to the area of plants. The method used consisted of playing Korobeiniki – also known as the theme song from Tetris – recorded in two versions. One version was played in piano and the second version was played in sine waves, to compare the two different frequency spectrums’ effect on plant growth. Test groups were based on the version that was played; the first group was exposed to piano while the second one was exposed to sine waves. One control group without music was used as well. Among two test groups and one control group, alfalfa and lentils grew in three batches in each group. With each batch having a unique result, the research resulted in a non-generalisable fashion, which suggests further research is vital in order to provide a conclusion which is based on more of a quantitative outcome.

[EN] Applying illustration as a means to represent the aesthetics of a musical movement is the proposal of this work. The next project is an illustrated book that shows us the importance of clothing, clothing as the second skin that defines us and allows us to communicate visually. Through a return to the past, specifically to the England of the 70s it is decided to analyze the aesthetics of glam or glitter rock. The fact that this musical style gave more importance to his stylo than to his music has been the starting point of this project. The proposal is proposed not only as a book with descriptive and didactic function but also visual for the reader to connect and arouse an interest in the aesthetics of the illustrations. Divided into 8 chapters analyzes the most extravagant fashion of 8 precursor icons of this musical subgenre. The purpose of the project is to self-edit a book for a general public in order to demonstrate the social impact that this subgenre had.

The author of this article shows the double function, music has in Eliot's 'The Mill on the Floss': a language of love, passion and desperation, and a gateway to the world of imagination and pleasure. Recalling Eliot's musical ability, the article reveals how the writer enhances the novel's aesthetic qualities by interweaving opera pieces with the episodes of the novel, and bases each episode on the act of an opera. - Abstract
Feliks Nowowiejski (1877-1946), a Polish composer whose name is synonymous with Polish patriotic music, including the country’s second unofficial anthem, contributed to the twentieth-century cello repertoire with his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in E Minor, op.55. Except for Jan Maklakiewicz’s Cello Concerto on Gregorian Themes, Nowowiejski’s composition was the first known significant Polish cello concerto written in the twentieth century. Composed right before World War II, the concerto represents the neoclassical style of Nowowiejski’s last years. Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), known for her violin compositions and string quartets, was a major representative of the Polish neoclassical style. Her Cello Concerto no.1, composed several years after World War II, represents the neoclassical style following the oppressive restrictions of the communist government. This document will explore and analyze these two concertos through the prism of the composers' experiences and influences. It also means to compare the concertos through a historical, stylistic, and compositional perspective. The Nowowiejski concerto has as of yet not received much attention. There is no publication of the composition, nor are there any recordings. The author of this document’s utmost hope is that this will change as more study is devoted to the life and compositions of this Warmian composer.

- Abstract
For decades, conservatories have divided singing into two tracks: classical (voce chiusa) or musical theater (CCM). Young singers are forced to decide which track they will continue on—seemingly for the rest of their careers. But the demand for a single skill set does not reflect today’s job market nor the vocal demands singers will face throughout their careers. Singers, instead, must be readily able to compete at high levels on more than one track. Yet the majority of programs have not restructured to accommodate this change. Such recalcitrance is detrimental to singers as they navigate high-stakes, high-pressure careers with little to no knowledge of crucial skills they may need. Often this can lead to over-singing, poor vocal health, and sometimes the end of a career. I propose a way in which both tracks—voce chiusa and CCM—can be used symbiotically. This combinatorial approach is good for future careers, but more importantly, it is beneficial to a singer’s intrinsic laryngeal muscle development. Finding a healthy belt for voce chiusa-trained singers is equally beneficial as finding a strong head-voice for CCM singers. This synthesis of vocal techniques actually yields a super-technique—a more flexible, healthy, and individualized sound that is unified through the use of the breath. This document is an exposition of the pedagogical benefits of learning both traditional, voce chiusa and CCM repertoire concurrently in vocal training. I also offer repertoire that supports this combinatorial approach in order to make its utility in the voice studio more accessible. This repertoire features pedagogically semi-equivalent song pairings with a focus on the soprano Fach. I will highlight the major areas of equivalence and pedagogical efficacy shared by the voce chiusa and CCM repertoire paired. Twenty-five style pairings are offered as a sample of the future catalog I hope to aggregate for all major voice types. The purpose of the catalog is to incorporate pluralistic style in the studio by combining the pedagogical methods of voce chiusa and CCM singing in order to train singers to have greater vocal development, flexibility, and health.

- Abstract
This document investigates the prevalence of ethno-nationalist ideology in the Balkan neo-folk music genres Pop-folk and its predecessor, Turbo-folk, under influences of globalization and queer culture. Turbo-Folk and Pop-folk are deeply embedded in the socio-political and historical structures of the Balkan region. Religion, ethno-nationalism, gender politics, and globalization intertwine within every facet of the music production - music videography, lyrics and language, musical elements such as vocal techniques, instrumentation, melodic structures, and rhythms. Ultimately, Serbian ethno-nationalism is the backbone of both genres, even though it appears on the surface to have become a Pan-Balkan genre through the far-reaching appeal of Pop-folk. Serbian ethno-nationalist ideology uses elements of globalization and queer culture to assert modernity while retaining the socio-historical patriarchal matrices of power of the Serbian Nation-State through subliminal messages hidden in the music.

- Abstract
The musical developments of the Modernist period provided a new understanding and approach to composition. These developments are also seen in ballet, branching into several styles, with many choreographers providing their unique take to staging musical works. In this study, the modernist choreomusical relationship is examined with respect to the possibility of a page-to-stage approach in dance. This thesis examines how this approach is manifested in the complex relationships between the composer, and the choreographer. Drawing on nine examples of modernist era ballets categorised in to three styles (classical, neoclassical, and contemporary ballets), discussion of historical context, analysis of the musical and choreographic relationship, and other ideas surrounding adapting music for a visual medium are explored. This thesis also examines changing attitudes to music/dance relationships. Two lines of enquiry are followed, the first assesses, through the example of Stravinsky, Balanchine, and several other contemporaries, whether a page-to-stage approach exists for ballet. A supplementary enquiry explores how such an approach is manifested within different methods of choreography. This study finds that there are difficulties in applying the choreomusical page-to-stage approach to analysing changing attitudes to music/dance relationships. At another level, this study points to the benefit of incorporating the concept of diegesis in analysing the changing attitudes to music/dance relationships.

- Abstract
Visions from Revelation is a sketch of Revelation 4 portrayed through piano and fixed media. The pianism makes tribute to several composers. Eleven Echoes of Autumn by George Crumb influenced the inside-of-the-piano operations. In the second piece, the extended techniques go nearly as far as the musique concrète instrumentale writing in Helmut Lachen- mann’s Guero. Naturally, the concept of prepared piano in movement one comes from John Cage, but the soundscape is in the vein of Crumb’s Makrokosmos using a thimble to mute strings. The pitch organization for the movements vary. In the first movement, the pitch content is a cross between intervallic harmonic techniques and pandiatonicism. The scale is similar to D Major, but the tendency toward tritones raises the 4th scale degree while lowering the 7th. Furthermore, the scale occasionally lowers the 2nd and 6th scale degree for the sake of intervallic integrity as well as for bringing a strong pull down to the 1st and 5th scale degree. The second movement applies Messiaen’s third mode of limited transposition, which is one of the most chromatic of his modes. Using this mode and carefully designing the melodic contour, the pitch material imitates the sound quality of the inside piano operations. The third movement is more intuitive with the horizontal pitch structure, but vertically there are general guidelines. The harmonic intervals consist of minor 2nds and perfect 5ths at the beginning. By measure 71, the minor 2nds invert to major 7ths, and by measure 122, the perfect 5ths invert to perfect 4ths. Overall, this piece has a triumphal nature prompted by the programmatic material of the throne room from Revelation 4. Musically it displays virtuosic writing in the style of composers like Crumb and Lachenmann. The pitch material derives from several different 20th century techniques as well as some more intuitive approaches that evoke the triumphant feel.

- Abstract
This document presents methods to address common performance challenges faced by college-level piano performance majors by adapting techniques from the acting System of Konstantin Stanislavski, a Russian actor, director, writer, and founder of the Moscow Art Theater (MXAT) who lived from 1863-1938. The common performance challenges addressed in this study are performance anxiety, physical tension in performance, interpretation challenges, and stage presence—the “visual rhetoric” of piano playing. The methods suggested in this study are presented as sixteen Activities that are adapted from Stanislavski’s System for stage actors. Because the impact of Stanislavski’s methods on piano pedagogy is not widely understood, this study also gives background and context for the influence of Stanislavski on a generation of Russian-born and other influential pianists and teachers who became part of the American system of piano pedagogy in the first half of the twentieth century. Chapter 1 (Introduction) provides support and context for the four performance challenges addressed in the study from writings in the field of piano performance and pedagogy. This chapter also explores the relationship between acting (particularly the methods of Stanislavski) and piano performance through statements and writings by pianists and pedagogues including Theodore Leschetizky, Heinrich Neuhaus, George Kochevitsky, Rosina Lhévinne, Sviatoslav Richter, and Artur Rubenstein. Chapter 2 is a review of literature which examines five intersecting topics: (i) the key writings of Konstantin Stanislavski; (ii) writings about Stanislavski and his System; (iii) key writings on piano performance, skills, and interpretation; (iv) dissertations and theses which propose a connection between the System and music performance; and (v) dissertations and theses which propose connections and applications of the System to fields outside of music. An overview and selected biography of Stanislavski’s life and work are included in Chapter 3 along with an overview of the Stanislavski’s acting System, outlining what Stanislavski described as a lifelong process of learning and implementing his theory of performance. Following this, chapter 4 presents sixteen specific Activities adapted for college-level pianists which address performance challenges using concepts from the System such as relaxation, public solitude, attention, round-table analysis, imagination, subtext, emotion memory, communication, stage charm, and creating a score of physical actions. This document concludes with chapter 5 which provides a summary, reflections by the author on important aspects of the System and the Activities as well as recommendations for further study. This document also contains a bibliography and appendices including a glossary of key terms.

- Abstract
This book, the first English-language translation of Acoustique des instruments de musique, Second Edition, presents the necessary foundations for understanding the complex physical phenomena involved in musical instruments. What is the function of the labium in a flute? Which features of an instrument allow us to make a clear audible distinction between a clarinet and a trumpet? With the help of numerous examples, these questions are addressed in detail. The authors focus in particular on the significant results obtained in the field during the last fifteen years. Their goal is to show that elementary physical models can be used with benefit for various applications in sound synthesis, instrument making, and sound recording. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students and researchers; however it could also be of interest for engineers, musicians, craftsmen, and music lovers who wish to learn about the basics of musical acoustics. Casts new light on the physics of musical instruments Includes up-to-date research published int he field of musical acoustics in the last fifteen years Outlines new methods developed in other fields such as complex modes and nonlinear normal modes Represents the only book on the physics of musical instruments to include practice exercises, catering to a broad audience of graduate students and researchers Brings the essential Acoustique des instruments de musique to an English audience for the first time.

- Abstract
This book provides an in-depth introduction and overview of current research in computational music analysis. Its seventeen chapters, written by leading researchers, collectively represent the diversity as well as the technical and philosophical sophistication of the work being done today in this intensely interdisciplinary field. A broad range of approaches are presented, employing techniques originating in disciplines such as linguistics, information theory, information retrieval, pattern recognition, machine learning, topology, algebra and signal processing. Many of the methods described draw on well-established theories in music theory and analysis, such as Forte's pitch-class set theory, Schenkerian analysis, the methods of semiotic analysis developed by Ruwet and Nattiez, and Lerdahl and Jackendoff's Generative Theory of Tonal Music. The book is divided into six parts, covering methodological issues, harmonic and pitch-class set analysis, form and voice-separation, grammars and hierarchical reduction, motivic analysis and pattern discovery and, finally, classification and the discovery of distinctive patterns. As a detailed and up-to-date picture of current research in computational music analysis, the book provides an invaluable resource for researchers, teachers and students in music theory and analysis, computer science, music information retrieval and related disciplines. It also provides a state-of-the-art reference for practitioners in the music technology industry.

- Abstract
This study examines the R&B protest songs performed during the Civil Rights Movement and outlines their stories and musical characteristics for the purposes of highlighting a natural alignment that existed between several of the R&B recording artists that laid the foundations of R&B music and the agendas of the African-American church during the Civil Rights Movement. This study includes lyric and music analyses of some of the more popular R&B songs released during the Civil Rights Movement between 1960-1968 in which these analyses are compared with one another to form some general themes as to how these songs outlined the stories of the Civil Rights Movement and how they display that several of R&B music’s foundational recording artists naturally aligned their music with the agendas of the African-American church during the Civil Rights Movement in spite of pursuing careers within secular music.

- Abstract
The scope of this dissertation is to provide an overview of the fundamental importance of music in the formation of the national identity of the Latvian people and how music has helped them remain and overcome extreme adversities as a nonviolent gentle nation in the Herderian sense, and how the peaceful and resilient spirit it helped create was fundamental to the restoration of independence after decades of Soviet occupation; to provide a summary of the history and literature of the pipe organ in Latvia within the wider cultural and historical context of that country; and to present the organist and composer Aivars Kalējs as a worthy representative of the values and spirit of the Latvian heritage. The analysis of three of his most significant organ compositions demonstrates how the composer’s creative process relates back to the Latvian archetypal worldview and cultural heritage: Per aspera ad astra (1989), Via dolorosa (1992), and Solitudinem faciunt (2016).
