This volume assembles twelve interdisciplinary essays that were originally presented at the Second International Conference on Word and Music Studies at Ann Arbor, MI, in 1999, a conference organized by the International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA).The contributions to this volume focus on two centres of interest. The first deals with general issues of literature and music relations from culturalist, historical, reception-aesthetic and cognitive points of view. It covers issues such as conceptual problems in devising transdisciplinary histories of both arts, cultural functions of opera as a means of reflecting postcolonial national identity, the problem of verbalizing musical experience in nineteenth-century aesthetics and of understanding reception processes triggered by musicalized fiction. The second centre of interest deals with a specific genre of vocal music as an obvious area of word and music interaction, namely the song cycle. As a musico-literary genre, the song cycle not only permits explorations of relations between text and music in individual songs but also raises the question if, and to what extent words and/or music contribute to creating a larger unity beyond the limits of single songs. Elucidating both of these issues with stimulating diversity the essays in this section highlight classic nineteenth- and twentieth-century song cycles by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss and Benjamin Britten and also include the discussion of a modern successor of the song cycle, the concept album as part of today's popular culture.

Die Grundlage für den vorliegenden Band bilden literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge, die im Rahmen der Tagung «Dialog der Künste: Literatur und Musik» im März 2017 an der Universität Lodz präsentiert wurden. Der Band folgt dem Konzept von Literatur und Musik als korrespondierende Künste in Anlehnung an Oskar Walzels These von der «wechselseitigen Erhellung der Künste» aus dem Jahr 1917. Diese gründet in Horazʼ Idee von einer heteronomen Natur der Künste und hebt das kreative, dialogische Potenzial des Vergleichs hervor. Durch vielfache Korrespondenzen wird Musik zum Anlass für poetologische bzw. metatextuelle und semantische Reflexion. Die Beiträge befassen sich mit den Wechselverhältnissen zwischen Literatur und Musik, die zum einen die Thematisierung von unterschiedlich funktionalisierten Musik-Zitaten betreffen und zum anderen auch strukturell-rhetorische Analogien erfassen.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen musikalische Aspekte von Rilkes Werk im Kontext einer literarischen Moderne, in der die Musik insgesamt eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Biographische Faktoren werden dabei ebenso einbezogen wie literarische, philosophische und ästhetische Traditionen. Die Untersuchungen befassen sich mit Rilkes Musik-Reflexionen, den Neuen Gedichten, den Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge, einigen späten Gedichten und der Rilke-Rezeption im Surrealismus. Ein wichtiges Anliegen besteht darin, Rilkes ambivalentes Verhältnis zur Musik von einseitigen Bewertungen zu befreien und sowohl Rilkes Begeisterung für die Musik als auch seine Skepsis gegenüber dieser Kunst als produktive Impulse für sein Gesamtwerk darzustellen. The essays in this volume explore musical aspects of Rilke's works in the context of a modernist aesthetic in which music plays a key role. Biographical angles are taken into account alongside a focus on literary, philosophical and aesthetic traditions. The articles discuss Rilke's overt reflections upon music, its role in the New Poems, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, and some of the late poetry, as well as the reception of Rilke within Surrealism. One of the main ambitions of this volume is to liberate Rilke's ambivalent attitude towards music (the subject of many scholarly controversies) from the one-sided evaluations that have hitherto prevailed. Rilke's enthusiasm for music, as well as his scepticism towards it, must both be seen as productive impulses for his works.

Friedrich Hölderlin gründete seine Poetik vom „Wechsel der Töne“ auf musikalischen Gesetzen und entnahm der Musik seine Metaphern, von der Hymne an die Göttin der Harmonie zur „Auflösung der Dissonanzen“ Hyperions, von den „reinen Melodien“ und dem „Saitenspiel“ zum „blinden Sänger“, von den „Nachtgesängen“ zu den „vaterländischen Gesängen“. Die außerordentliche Faszination, die sein Werk im 20. Jahrhundert auf Komponisten unterschiedlicher geographischer Herkunft und ästhetischer Orientierung ausübte, führte zu einer Flut von Vertonungen seiner Gedichte, zu Dramatisierungen seiner Texte, zu Instrumentalwerken und vielen anderen Formen der musikalischen Kreativität. Unter dieser Voraussetzung versucht der vorliegende Band – Ergebnis eines mehrjährigen Austauschs unter Germanisten, Musikwissenschaftlern und Philosophen – einerseits die musikalischen Grundlagen von Hölderlins Werk, andererseits den fruchtbaren Dialog der Komponisten mit dem Dichter näher zu bestimmen und dadurch Formen des interdisziplinären Dialogs zu praktizieren.

Réfléchir sur les rapports entre parole et musique dans les mondes hispaniques signifie se pencher sur cette histoire que nous connaissons encore peu et mal. Mais c'est également une invitation à penser et à repenser les modalités d'échange et de métissage à l'intérieur de la culture ibérique et hispano-américaine, et les relations d'opposition et complémentarité entre les formes poétiques savantes et populaires.

Le débat est continu sur la question de la primauté du texte par rapport à la musique et sur une difficile entente entre le librettiste et le musicien. Cet ouvrage interroge aussi le rôle du vaudeville dans le théâtre au XVIIIe siècle, les rapports entre la métrique musicale et la métrique littéraire et la réflexion sur la difficulté de la traduction des textes chantés. Addressing a range of music examples and texts, the fifteen essays in this volume explore the interaction between both conceptions of time and space and the intermedial relationship between words and music. This intermedial experimentation may serve to adopt the spatio-temporal attributes of the other medium or to comment on a form's own mediality. It has much to say about processes of literary and musical composition and reception, the role of tradition and intertextuality, and the medial constellation in which these works situate themselves. The articles here collected testify to the success of the first conference of the Word and Music Association Forum, founded in 2009 to offer graduate students and post-docs a forum for presenting and discussing work in word and music studies.

Les premières années du séminaire interuniversitaire Paroles & Musiques, crée en 2007, ont permis de rapprocher les universités Paris-Sorbonne et Sorbonne Nouvelle, comme de croiser diverses disciplines : musicologie, études théâtrales et cinématographiques, esthétique et communication. De l'état des lieux aux perspectives de recherche, des expériences créatrices individuelles aux interventions plus synthétiques ou théoriques, les présents articles reflètent la richesse des langues et des langages artistiques.

En grec ancien, il n'y avait pas de distinction nette entre poésie et musique. Le terme de môusiké rassemblait tous les arts des muses : la poésie, la musique, la danse, et même l'éducation élémentaire. Les huit auteurs de ce volume s'intéressent à l'importance de la musicalité dans la poésie comme de la poésie dans la musique. Les principales questions abordées concernent l'évolution du rapport fondateur entre poésie et musicalité, les raisons de ces modifications, la recherche de concepts pour saisir ce lien. Issus de la journée d'études éponyme (8 décembre 2005, à Rouen, Centre de recherches sur l'Autriche et l'Allemagne), les articles composant cet ouvrage se réfèrent à des oeuvres littéraires comme celles de Rilke, Woolf, Celan, Bachmann, Stramm, Ball, Hausmann, Blümmer, Schwitters, Kling.

Michèle Reverdy, née en 1943, ancienne étudiante des classes de Claude Ballif et Olivier Messiaen, apparaît aujourd'hui comme une personnalité dans le domaine de la composition, notamment dans le domaine vocal et l'opéra. Elle a toujours proclamé son attachement à la littérature, au théâtre, à la peinture, et son oeuvre en est d'autant plus riche.

Word and music studies is a relatively young discipline that has nonetheless generated a substantial amount of work. Recent studies in the field have embraced music in literature (word music, formal parallels to music in literature, verbal music), music and literarature (vocal music) and literature in music (programme music). Other positions have been defined in which song exists as an analysable category distinct from words and music and requiring its own grammar. Much of the literature has tended to focus on readings of the literary text, pushing theoretical and analytical concerns in music to one side, a trend that is as apparent among musicologists as among literary historians. The essays presented here from the third Liverpool Music Symposium seek accordingly to redress this situation. Contributors tackle the study of words and music from a number of standpoints, examining artists as diverse as Eminem, Patti Smith and Arnold Schoenberg.

The nine interdisciplinary essays in this volume were presented in 2003 in Berlin at the Fourth International Conference on Word and Music Studies, which was sponsored by The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA). The nine articles in this volume cover two areas: “Surveying the Field” and “Music and the Spoken Word”. Topics include postmodernism, philosophy, German literary modernism, opera, film, the Lied, radio plays, and “verbal counterpoint”. They cover the works of such philosophers, critics, literary figures, and composers as Argento, Beckett, Deleuze, Guattari, Feldman, Glenn Gould, Nietzsche, Schubert, Strauss, Wagner, and Wolfram. Three films are discussed: Casablanca, The Fisher King, and Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould.

While Fernando Ortiz's contribution to our understanding of Cuba and Latin America more generally has been widely recognized since the 1940s, recently there has been renewed interest in this scholar and activist who made lasting contributions to a staggering array of fields. Essays on the synthesis of the musical and literary arts in German Romanticism.The interrelationship between music and literature reached its zenith during the Romantic era, and nowhere was this relationship more pronounced than in Germany. Many representatives of literary and philosophical German Romanticism held music to be the highest and most expressive, quintessentially Romantic art form, able to convey what cannot be expressed in words: the ineffable and metaphysical. The influence was reciprocal, with literature providing a rich source of inspiration for German composers of both instrumental and vocal music, giving rise to a wealth of new forms and styles. The essays in this volume are selected from papers presented at an international, interdisciplinary conference held at University College Dublin in December 2000, and include contributions from Germanists, musicologists, comparatists, and performance artists. This interdisciplinarity makes for informed and complementary approaches and arguments. The essays cover not only the'Romantic'nineteenth century (commencing with the early Romanticism of the Jena circle), but also look ahead to the legacy, reception, and continuation of German Romanticism in the modern and postmodern ages. Alongside new readings of familiar and established writers and composers such as Goethe, Hoffmann, Wagner, and Schubert, a case is made for other figures such as Wackenroder, Novalis, Schlegel, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, and Berlioz, as well as less-known figures such as Ritter, Schneider, and Termen, and for a reconsideration of questions of categorization. This collection of 19 essays is the first one devoted to function-oriented analyses of intermedial interrelationships in literature, art, music, and film. The contributors — among others, Werner Wolf, James Heffernan, Walter Bernhart, Siglind Bruhn, Claus Clüver, Valerie Robillard, and Tamar Yacobi — are leading international scholars in the field of intermediality. The common basis of the essays in this volume — ranging from intermedial studies of medieval liturgical practices, early cinema, modernist art, ekphrasis, music and literature, art and literature, film and literature, hymns, and pop music, to the musical and technological aspects of Concrete poetry — is the ambition to pay attention to the cultural contexts that enhance the significance of these intermedial works and trends under examination. Since the contributions cover different types of intermedial endeavours from various periods and times, a kind of historicizing perspective is outlined. So, in pursuit of a still lacking coherent historical survey of cultural functions of intermediality, this volume might be recognized as a step towards such a Funktionsgeschichte for intermedial exploration.
