Abstract

The employees of the only newspaper published entirely in Basque (Euskaldunon Egunkaria), shut down by a judicial order for alleged terrorist connections, managed to publish another newspaper (Egunero) the day after the police intervention (February 21, 2003), and continued publishing a daily issue for four months, until the foundation of a new standard newspaper in Basque (Berria). This study analyses how a group of former employees of a media organization, dispossessed of all its premises and economic funds, managed to publish a new temporary newspaper for four months, in the context of an uncertain judicial situation. Los empleados del único diario publicado integramente en euskera (Euskaldunon Egunkaria), cerrado por una orden judicial por supuestas conexiones con ETA, lograron publicar un nuevo periódico (Egunero) el día después de la intervención policial (21 de febrero de 2003) y continuaron publicándolo durante cuatro meses, hasta la fundación de un nuevo diario estándar en euskera (Berria). Esta investigación analiza cómo un grupo de ex empleados de un medio de comunicación, desposeído de todas sus instalaciones y fondos económicos, logró publicar un nuevo periódico provisional en un contexto excepcional y una situación judicial incierta. Euskara hutsean argitaratutako egunkari bakarra (Euskaldunon Egunkaria) agindu judizial bidez itxi eta biharamunean (2003ko otsailaren 21ean), bertako langileek beste egunkari bat (Egunero) ateratzea lortu zuten eta, ondorengo lau hilabeteetan, egunero argitaratu zuten, euskarazko egunkari estandar berria (Berria) sortu zuten arte. Ikerketa honetan aztertzen da komunikabide bateko langile-ohien talde bat, euren egoitzak eta diru kontuak itxita zeuzkatela, nola moldatu zen lau hilabetez behin-behineko egunkari bat argitaratzeko ziurgabetasun handiko egoera judizial baten erdian.

9. Supporting German occupiers: the pro-Vichy stance of the Basque newspaper 'Eskualduna'.

Abstract

Eskualduna, a weekly newspaper edited in Bayonne and the oldest and most influential Basque language media publication of the time, was shut down in 1944 by the new post-liberation French authorities because of its pro-Vichy and pro-German stance, while its editor, the priest Sauveur Aroçarena, was arrested and convicted. This article examines the basis of the accusation under which Eskualduna was seized, i.e. to what extent its editorial approach favored the Vichy regime led by Marshall Pétain and the German occupation. For this purpose, a sample of 32 editorial articles signed by Aroçarena after four landmarks of the war (declaration of war in 1939, first German occupation in 1940, occupation of Vichy France in 1942 and Normandy landings in 1944) has been analyzed following source analysis methodology. The analysis of Eskualduna's editorials has been contextualized within the reality of the Basque society's attitude towards German occupation in order to understand that Eskualduna's position was in harmony with its community's way of experiencing the war, the regime and the occupation. This research confirms that Eskualduna had overall a pro-Vichy stance, and points out that this approach was framed within a discourse of French patriotism, defense of Catholicism, personality cult and affirmation of Basque identity [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. No more bullets for ETA: the loss of internal support as a key factor in the end of the Basque group’s campaign.

Abstract

The Basque separatist organisation ETA laid down its arms in 2011 after 40 years of an armed campaign for independence. It was not a consequence of political negotiations. The Basque group did not achieve its goals. Yet, it unilaterally decided to end its armed activity forever. This article analyses why and how ETA ended its armed campaign. It clarifies the events from the collapse of the last peace process in June 2007 to the announcement of the definitive end of ETA’s campaign in October 2011. It identifies the causal factors that led the Basque group towards its end. This article contends that the end of ETA’s campaign is a case of transformation triggered by its constituency’s withdrawal of support for the armed struggle. The leadership and social base of the political movement to which ETA belongs concluded that political violence was not effective anymore and, furthermore, was damaging for the Basque pro-independence movement. After an internal struggle, in which the faction advocating for exclusively political means prevailed, ETA was driven towards a unilateral abandonment of armed struggle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
