Cultural Heritage institutions have been exploring new ways of making available their catalogues in digital format. Recently, new approaches have emerged as methods to reuse and make available the contents for computational purposes. This work introduces a methodology to transform digital collections into Linked Open Data following best practices. The framework has been applied to Indigenous and Spanish colonial archives based on the collection Relaciones Geográficas of Mexico and Guatemala provided by the LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections. The first third of the twentieth-century was a golden age for Spanish Archaeology, characterised by the diversity of initiatives and its consolidation as a scientific discipline. In this context, the project of the Monumental Catalogue of Spain was developed with the aim to produce a compilation of the Spanish heritage in just one publication. In addition to collecting descriptions of archaeological sites, this work comprises interpretations of past societies in the early twentieth-century. Focusing on the volumes of the provinces of Avila, Soria and Burgos, this article analyses how women are represented in Prehistory and Iron Age contexts. To do this, we use Transkribus, a digital tool that uses Artificial Intelligence to produce semi-automatic transcripts of these volumes, and carried out a linguistic analysis of gender in Voyant Tools. The research results demonstrate the need to rethink stereotypes and create inclusive narratives., La arqueología española de principios del siglo XX se caracteriza por la diversidad de iniciativas y su consolidación como disciplina científica. En este contexto, se desarrolló el proyecto del Catálogo Monumental de España, cuyo objetivo principal era la compilación del patrimonio español en una publicación. Mapping is an established practice by which people represent, explore, and share their understandings of geography. While cartographic products have become the dominant medium for this, there are many ways of expressing spatial knowledge, providing a rich opportunity to understand different forms in which people recreate, navigate, and understand their landscape. This research explores how Nahuas in Mixtla de Altamirano, Veracruz, Mexico, build tochan, their space called “house,” and how this knowledge is transmitted orally over time. This shows the potential that oral narratives have to inform and decolonize historical and archaeological knowledge and to lead us to revaluate our own spatial thinking.

The DECM Historical Gazetteer is a digital gazetteer of historical places in Mexico available in different formats and built from detailed research. This includes a 16th century version (The DECM 16th Century Gazetteer) with the toponyms mentioned in primary sources including the Relaciones Geográficas (1577-1585) and the Suma de Visitas de los Pueblos de la Nueva España (1548-1550), as well as information on the political, religious and administrative units of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The gazetteer is composed of 71 main files with geographic information of colonial provinces, alcaldias, corregimientos, diocesis, among many others, as well as thousands of historical cities, towns, villages, and other places. This is integrated in an interoperable model containing thousands of historical locations with alternative spelling place-name variations. The dataset also includes 30 tables with additional historical information related to toponyms, languages, repositories, maps, etc.There are two versions of the DECM Historical Gazetteer: 1) The DECM Gazetteer, and 2) The DECM_16thC_Gazetteer.This is the 16th Century DECM Gazetteer. This version constitutes a subset of the main DECM Historical Gazetteer, including only the toponyms that were mentioned in the the Suma de Visita de los Pueblos and the RG reports, providing a precise window into the period when these were recorded (1548-1550/1577-1585). This dataset contains: the toponyms with coordinates, mentioned and disambiguated for each RG volume and the Suma; plus, the 30 geographical layers and 32 tables as explained above, as well as the DECM Gazetteer Registry.Content:1. The DECM Corpus is a digital corpus of the texts of Relaciones Geográficas de Nueva España (the Geographic Reports of New Spain) with different versions, including a machine ready version, a gold standard annotated dataset, and an automatically annotated version ready for text mining and machine learning experiments.

The DECM Corpus is a digital corpus of the texts of Relaciones Geográficas de Nueva España (the Geographic Reports of New Spain) with different versions, including a machine ready version, a gold standard annotated dataset, and an automatically annotated version ready for text mining and machine learning experiments.This version contains a sample of the RGs manually annotated by multiple researchers with the software of our industry partner, Tagtog. This corpus has been used to carry out the NLP and ML experiments and the files are available in JSON and TSV format. These files are composed by texts and annotations. This is also accompanied by the DECM ontology which provides an explanation of the entities and labels produced. This corpus can be used for further experimentation with Artificial Intelligence methods.

This article introduces an ongoing Digital Humanities project aimed at leveraging the benefits of Natural Language Processing, Corpus Linguistics, Machine Learning, and Spatial Analysis for advancing the computational analysis of vast historical corpora. As a case study, the project concentrates on the Relaciones Geográficas de la Nueva España (1577–1585), one of the key corpora for understanding the early colonial period of Mexico. Using a computer–assisted methodology called Geographical Text Analysis (GTA), the project offers automatic means for parsing historical texts and the markup of words referring both to place names (toponyms) and analytical concepts that are then linked to their geographic locations. Adding geospatial intelligence to the parsing of texts allows exploring hidden geographies and narratives in the historic corpus. The article provides a general overview of the corpus, describes the GTA methodology step by step, and reports on the progress achieved so far.

The aims of this poster are to present the annotation model created to deepen knowledge and understanding on economy and society during the 16th century New Spain and the use of tagtog.net (an online tool for automatic annotation) to create and curate the resources required for developing NLP tools.

High-resolution population grids built from historical census data can ease the analyses of geographical population changes, at the same time also facilitating the combination of population data with other GIS layers to perform analyses on a wide range of topics. This article reports on experiments with a hybrid spatial disaggregation technique that combines the ideas of dasymetric mapping and pycnophylactic interpolation, using modern machine learning methods to combine different types of ancillary variables, in order to disaggregate historical census data into a 200 m resolution grid. We specifically report on experiments related to the disaggregation of historical population counts from three different national censuses which took place around 1900, respectively in Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The obtained results indicate that the proposed method is indeed highly accurate, outperforming simpler disaggregation schemes based on mass-preserving areal weighting or pycnophylactic interpolation. The best results were obtained using modern regression methods (i.e., gradient tree boosting or convolutional neural networks, depending on the case study), which previously have only seldom been used for spatial disaggregation.

The workshop addressed the use of geographic information systems and other spatial technologies in humanities research, bringing together researchers and practitioners from different subfields of computer science and the geographical information sciences, interested in applying spatial methods and technology to the humanities.
