3. A Novel Method for Characterizing Fatigue Delamination Growth Under Mode I Using the Double Cantilever Beam Specimen

Abstract

A novel method is proposed to obtain Mode I delamination growth rate from a Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimen. In the proposed method, Unidirectional (UD) DCB specimens are tested in fatigue at different initial maximum energy release rates levels. The growth rate data obtained in the first increments of crack growth at each maximum energy release rate level are used to generate a Paris Law equation, which characterizes delamination growth rate without fiber-bridging, and can also be used to determine a delamination onset curve. The remaining delamination growth rate data from each test are used to determine a modified Paris law, which characterizes the delamination growth rate in a DCB specimen, explicitly accounting for fiber-bridging. The proposed expression captures well the scatter in experimental data obtained using the DCB specimens, suggesting its adequacy. The Paris Law characterizing delamination growth rate without fiber-bridging predicts higher delamination growth rates for the same maximum energy release rate applied, leading to a conservative estimate for delamination growth. This is particularly relevant, since in generic ply interfaces, fiber-bridging is less predominant than in UD DCB specimens. Failing to account for fiber-bridging in UD DCB specimens may underestimate the delamination growth rate, yielding non-conservative predictions.

L'opera presenta 13 specie di frutta originaria della penisola italiana: pero e melo (Pomacee), Agrumi, Fico, Frutta secca (castagno, noce (Il NOCE Capitolo III), mandorlo, nocciolo, pistacchio), Drupacee (ciliegio, albicocco, pesco e susino). Le varietà descritte sono più di 5000: quelle più diffuse hanno una scheda molto ampia con relative foto, quelle meno diffuse sono descritte più sinteticamente anche se con riferimenti bibliografici precisi, per chi volesse approfondirne la conoscenza. L'opera è un censimento pressoché completo di tutti i fruttiferi autoctoni e rappresenta un lavoro di notevole rilevanza scientifica

Abstract

The acute γ-irradiation (0, 20, 30, 40 Gy) of two white wine grape varieties, Trebbiano Romagnolo and Albana, during in vitro proliferation was tested. Trebbiano R. had a higher in vitro proliferation rate, but also showed a higher number of cultures with vitrification and morphological abnormalities. Abstract

La Società Agricola “Officina del Sole” rappresenta un tipico esempio di azienda agricola multifunzionale. Sita a Montegiorgio (FM), si estende su una superficie di circa 40 ha in zona collinare. Acquisita nel 2009 da una giovane imprenditrice locale, l’azienda, dapprima destinata alla quasi totale coltivazione della vite e in parte riservata a seminativo, è attualmente oggetto di un progetto che coinvolge lo spin-off HORT dell’Università Politecnica delle Marche e il Dipartimento di Colture Arboree della Facoltà di Agraria di Bologna, i quali hanno curato la progettazione dell’intera area, ponendo particolare attenzione all’analisi del territorio in cui l’azienda si inserisce, riproducendone quindi i tratti distintivi e caratteristici e tenendo conto della vocazionalità del territorio per la scelta delle colture. Per queste ragioni, è stata proposta una ripartizione colturale che ha previsto l’inserimento di vitigni e varietà di olivo e fruttiferi locali, volti a valorizzare il territorio, in termini di sostenibilità ambientale, economica e sociale, in quanto le colture si inseriscono perfettamente nel paesaggio e costituiscono parte integrante di percorsi didattici e socio-ricreativi proposti per incentivare l’offerta turistica della zona. Agriturismo, beauty farm, cantina, frantoio e fattoria didattica sono alcune fra le più importanti attività che l’azienda attiverà.

27. Analysis of Delamination Growth from Matrix Cracks in Laminates Subjected to Bending Loads

Abstract

A major source of delamination damage in laminated composite materials is from low-velocity impact. In thin composite laminates under point loads, matrix cracks develop first in the plies, and delaminations then grow from these cracks at the ply interfaces. The purpose of this study was to quantify the combined effects of bending and transverse shear loads on delamination initiation from matrix cracks. Graphite-epoxy laminates with 90 deg. plies on the outside were used to provide a two-dimensional simulation of the damage due to low-velocity impact. Three plate bending problems were considered: a 4-point bending, 3-point bending, and an end-clamped center-loaded plate. Under bending, a matrix crack will form on the tension side of the laminate, through the outer 90 deg. plies and parallel to the fibers. Delaminations will then grow in the interface between the cracked 90 deg. ply and the next adjacent ply. Laminate plate theory was used to derive simple equations relating the total strain energy release rate, G, associated with the delamination growth from a 90 deg. ply crack to the applied bending load and laminate stiffness properties. Three different lay-ups were tested and results compared. Test results verified that the delamination always formed at the interface between the cracked 90 deg. ply and the next adjacent ply. Calculated values for total G sub c from the analysis showed good agreement for all configurations. The analysis was able to predict the delamination onset load for the cases considered. The result indicated that the opening mode component (Mode I) for delamination growth from a matrix crack may be much larger than the component due to interlaminar shear (Mode II).

28. Interlaminar G(IIc) evaluation of toughened-resin matrix composites using the end-notched flexure test

Abstract

The usefulness of the end-notched flexure (ENF) test for measuring G(IIc) for toughened composites was evaluated. Calculations were made using the measured flexural compliance from the ENF test and the measured axial modulus. Tests were conducted on three different composite materials, using laminates with two different span lengths and insert sizes. The error associated with neglecting nonlinear terms in the displacement-curvature relationship was analyzed to demonstrate the influence of specimen geometry on G(IIc) measurement. It is concluded that G(IIc) measurement may vary with the method of calculation, span length, or insert thickness, but these effects are minor compared to the large differences in measurements obtained for different materials. Hence, the ENF test is a valid one for screening materials for improvements in interlaminar shear fracture toughness.

This paper presents a summary of the tests performed within a Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards collaborative test programme to examine the measurement of mode II interlaminar fracture toughness using four different test methods based on end notched flexure, stabilised end notched flexure, end loaded split, and four point end notched flexure carbon fibre reinforced epoxy specimens. Abstract

Work related stress can highly negatively affect not only company's productivity but also other aspects causing increased costs for absenteeism, increased number of work accident and near miss, higher turnover, reduced quality of products and services, reduced capability of renewal, and so on. In agreement with the Italian legislative decree 81/08 we evaluated stress level of workers of three different sanitary structures located in the middle of Italy. 305 workers (physicians, nurses, technicians, auxiliary nurse, white collars) were submitted to a questionnaire designed by our team of work. The sector reporting higher stress level was represented by nurses, the sector with lower stress level was made of technicians. We proposed a set of measures aiming to reduce the load of stress based on the assumption that in this sector is fundamental to develop strategies of intervention both at organizational and individual level.

Abstract

One hundred and twenty-two patients suffering from slight or moderate essential arterial hypertension with a previous history of myocardial infarction were selected for inclusion in this study. Patients were divided into two groups of 61 according to the type of anti-hypertensive therapy received. Patients in group 1 received nifedipine (30 mg p.d.), while patients in group 2 were treated using other anti-hypertensive therapy (diuretics, alpha-methyldopa, clonidine, indapamide). At the end of the follow-up period, which lasted 5 years, a statistically significant improvement in the following factors was observed in group 1 in comparison to the control group: (a) an improved response of both SBP (p less than 0.001) and DBP (p less than 0.001) levels to anti-hypertensive therapy; (b) a more significant diminution in the thickness of the interventricular septum (p less than 0.001) and the posterior wall of the left ventricle (p less than 0.001) assessed using ultrasonography; (c) a reduced number of cases of post-infarction angina (p less than 0.05); (d) fewer cases of recurrent infarction (p less than 0.05); (e) fewer deaths as a result of re-infarction (p less than 0.01). These results confirm that the vascular and cardioprotective effects of nifedipine give a good long-term outcome in hypertensive patients with a previous history of myocardial infarction.
