Abstract

BackgroundPatients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) have a life-limiting illness and short prognosis and experience many debilitating symptoms from early in the illness. Innovations such as remote symptom monitoring are needed to enable patients to maintain wellbeing and manage symptoms in a proactive and timely manner. The Advanced Symptom Management System (ASyMS) has been successfully used to monitor symptoms associated with cancer. ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of using an ASyMS adapted for use by patients with MPM, called ASyMSmeso, enabling the remote monitoring of symptoms using a smartphone. MethodsThis was a convergent mixed methods study using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) at key time points over a period of 2-3 months with 18 patients. The Sheffield Profile for Assessment and Referral for Care (SPARC), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) measure for eHealth, and Lung Cancer Symptom Scale-Mesothelioma (LCSS-Meso) were the PROMs used in the study. Patients were also asked to complete a daily symptom questionnaire on a smartphone throughout the study. At the end of the study, semistructured interviews with 11 health professionals, 8 patients, and 3 carers were conducted to collect their experience with using ASyMSmeso. ResultsEighteen patients with MPM agreed to participate in the study (33.3% response rate). The completion rates of study PROMs were high (97.2%-100%), and completion rates of the daily symptom questionnaire were also high, at 88.5%. There were no significant changes in quality of life, as measured by LCSS-Meso. There were statistically significant improvements in the SPARC psychological need domain (P=.049) and in the “Usefulness” domain of the TAM (P=.022). End-of-study interviews identified that both patients and clinicians found the system quick and easy to use. For patients, in particular, the system provided reassurance about symptom experience and the feeling of being listened to. The clinicians largely viewed the system as feasible and acceptable, and areas that were mentioned included the early management of symptoms and connectivity between patients and clinicians, leading to enhanced communication. ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that remote monitoring and management of symptoms of people with MPM using a mobile phone are feasible and acceptable. The evidence supports future trials using remote symptom monitoring to support patients with MPM at home.

Abstract

Spectral lightcurves consisting of time series single-pixel spectral measurements of spacecraft are used to infer the spacecraft's attitude and rotation. Two methods are used. One based on numerical optimisation of a regularised least squares cost function, and another based on machine learning with a neural network model. The aim is to work with minimal information, thus no prior is available on the attitude nor on the inertia tensor. The theoretical and practical aspects of this task are investigated, and the methodology is tested on synthetic data. Abstract

This paper presents a data processing pipeline designed to extract information from the hyperspectral signature of unknown space objects. The methodology proposed in this paper determines the material composition of space objects from single pixel images. Two techniques are used for material identification and classification: one based on machine learning and the other based on a least square match with a library of known spectra. From this information, a supervised machine learning algorithm is used to classify the object into one of several categories based on the detection of materials on the object. The behaviour of the material classification methods is investigated under non-ideal circumstances, to determine the effect of weathered materials, and the behaviour when the training library is missing a material that is present in the object being observed. Abstract

Hyperspectral Imaging is a crucial tool in remote sensing which captures far more spectral information than standard color images. However, the increase in spectral information comes at the cost of spatial resolution. Super-resolution is a popular technique where the goal is to generate a high-resolution version of a given low-resolution input. The majority of modern super-resolution approaches use convolutional neural networks. However, convolution itself is a linear operation and the networks rely on the non-linear activation functions after each layer to provide the necessary non-linearity to learn the complex underlying function. This means that convolutional neural networks tend to be very deep to achieve the desired results. Recently, self-organized operational neural networks have been proposed that aim to overcome this limitation by replacing the convolutional filters with learnable non-linear functions through the use of MacLaurin series expansions. This work focuses on extending the convolutional filters of a popular super-resolution model to more powerful operational filters to enhance the model performance on hyperspectral images. We also investigate the effects that residual connections and different normalization types have on this type of enhanced network. Despite having fewer parameters than their convolutional network equivalents, our results show that operational neural networks achieve superior super-resolution performance on small hyperspectral image datasets. Abstract

PurposeTo improve the outcomes of patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LL), the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib was examined in the Children's Oncology Group phase III clinical trial AALL1231, which also attempted to reduce the use of prophylactic cranial radiation (CRT) in newly diagnosed T-ALL.Patients and methodsChildren and young adults with T-ALL/T-LL were randomly assigned to a modified augmented Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster chemotherapy regimen with/without bortezomib during induction and delayed intensification. Multiple modifications were made to the augmented Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster backbone used in the predecessor trial, AALL0434, including using dexamethasone instead of prednisone and adding two extra doses of pegaspargase in an attempt to eliminate CRT in most patients.ResultsAALL1231 accrued 824 eligible and evaluable patients from 2014 to 2017. The 4-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) for arm A (no bortezomib) versus arm B (bortezomib) were 80.1% ± 2.3% versus 83.8% ± 2.1% (EFS, P = .131) and 85.7% ± 2.0% versus 88.3% ± 1.8% (OS, P = .085). Patients with T-LL had improved EFS and OS with bortezomib: 4-year EFS (76.5% ± 5.1% v 86.4% ± 4.0%; P = .041); and 4-year OS (78.3% ± 4.9% v 89.5% ± 3.6%; P = .009). No excess toxicity was seen with bortezomib. In AALL0434, 90.8% of patients with T-ALL received CRT. In AALL1231, 9.5% of patients were scheduled to receive CRT. Evaluation of comparable AALL0434 patients who received CRT and AALL1231 patients who did not receive CRT demonstrated no statistical differences in EFS (P = .412) and OS (P = .600).ConclusionPatients with T-LL had significantly improved EFS and OS with bortezomib on the AALL1231 backbone. Systemic therapy intensification allowed elimination of CRT in more than 90% of patients with T-ALL without excess relapse.

Abstract

The recently described pushframe imager, a parallelized single pixel camera capturing with a pushbroom-like motion, is intrinsically suited to both remote-sensing and compressive sampling. It optically applies a 2D mask to the imaged scene, before performing light integration along a single spatial axis, but previous work has not made use of the architecture's potential for taking measurements sparsely. In this paper we develop a strongly performing static binarized noiselet compressive sampling mask design, tailored to pushframe hardware, allowing both a single exposure per motion time-step, and retention of 2D correlations in the scene. Results from simulated and real-world captures are presented, with performance shown to be similar to that of immobile -- and hence inappropriate for satellite use -- whole-scene imagers. A particular feature of our sampling approach is that the degree of compression can be varied without altering the pattern, and we demonstrate the utility of this for efficiently storing and transmitting multi-spectral images., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

In this paper we present an evolution of the single-pixel camera architecture, called 'pushframe', which addresses the limitations of pushbroom cameras in space-based applications. In particular, it is well-suited to observing fast moving scenes while retaining high spatial resolution and sensitivity. We show that the system is capable of producing colour images with good fidelity and scalable resolution performance. The principle of our design places no restriction on the spectral range to be captured, making it suitable for wide infrared imaging.
