Abstract

Actinobacteria is an ancient phylum of Gram-positive bacteria with a characteristic high GC content to their DNA. The ActinoBase Wiki is focused on the filamentous actinobacteria, such as Streptomyces species, and the techniques and growth conditions used to study them. These organisms are studied because of their complex developmental life cycles and diverse specialised metabolism which produces many of the antibiotics currently used in the clinic. ActinoBase is a community effort that provides valuable and freely accessible resources, including protocols and practical information about filamentous actinobacteria. It is aimed at enabling knowledge exchange between members of the international research community working with these fascinating bacteria. ActinoBase is an anchor platform that underpins worldwide efforts to understand the ecology, biology and metabolic potential of these organisms. There are two key differences that set ActinoBase apart from other Wiki-based platforms: [1] ActinoBase is specifically aimed at researchers working on filamentous actinobacteria and is tailored to help users overcome challenges working with these bacteria and [2] it provides a freely accessible resource with global networking opportunities for researchers with a broad range of experience in this field.

Abstract

This research examines the development of intersubjectivity between improvising musicians. Drawing on Peirce’s (1935) semiotic theory of indexicality and Mead’s (1939) social behaviourist theory of emergence, this practice-based project engages a series of improvisation exercises that explore how an understanding of musical style informs the processes underlying the performance of spontaneously improvised music. A selection of recorded works are analysed subjectively through ethnographic accounts, providing a first-person insight into the processes of free improvised music as dynamically intersubjective.

We measured visual, grating, and vernier acuities and high/low spatial frequency (SF) contrast sensitivities in each eye using a staircase method. Stereoacuity was measured with the Titmus fly test. We recorded fixation eye movements (FEM) using high-resolution video-oculography. Subjects were classified as having either no nystagmus (n=18), fusion maldevelopment nystagmus syndrome (FMNS) (n=12), or nystagmus without any structural anomalies that does not meet the criteria for FMNS or infantile nystagmus (n=14).Results: Analysis of visual function by clinical amblyopia type showed that patients with strabismus/mixed amblyopia (F (2,54)=9.5, p< 0.001) were more likely to have poor stereopsis while controlling for AE grating acuity deficit. The FE of patients with anisometropia had greater contrast sensitivity deficits at low (F (2,43)=4.4, p=0.018) and high SF (F (2,42)=10.1, p< 0.001). Analysis of visual function by FEM characteristics (low SF: (F (3,43)=4.3, p=0.010) and high SF: (F (3,42)=7.1, p=0.001) showed that the FE of patients with FMNS had worse low and high SF contrast sensitivities, whereas those without FMNS had greater contrast sensitivity deficits only at high SF compared to controls. Abstract

Pseudomonas baetica strain a390T is the type strain of this recently described species and here we present its high-contiguity draft genome. To celebrate the 16th International Conference on Pseudomonas, the genome of P. baetica strain a390T was sequenced using a unique combination of Ion Torrent semiconductor and Oxford Nanopore methods as part of a collaborative community-led project. The use of high-quality Ion Torrent sequences with long Nanopore reads gave rapid, high-contiguity and -quality, 16-contig genome sequence. Whole genome phylogenetic analysis places P. baetica within the P. koreensis clade of the P. fluorescens group. Comparison of the main genomic features of P. baetica with a variety of other Pseudomonas spp. suggests that it is a highly adaptable organism, typical of the genus. This strain was originally isolated from the liver of a diseased wedge sole fish, and genotypic and phenotypic analyses show that it is tolerant to osmotic stress and to oxytetracycline., Here, we present the high-quality draft genome of Pseudomonas baetica, a bacterial pathogen that has been demonstrated to cause disease in fish cultivated in aquaculture facilities.

Abstract

Knowledge of state-specific infertility is limited. The objectives of this study were to explore state-specific estimates of lifetime prevalence of having ever experienced infertility, sought treatment for infertility, types of treatments sought, and treatment outcomes.Male and female adult residents aged 18-50 years from three states involved in the States Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technology Collaborative (Florida, Massachusetts, and Michigan) were asked state-added infertility questions as part of the 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a state-based, health-related telephone survey. Analysis involved estimation of lifetime prevalence of infertility.The estimated lifetime prevalence of infertility among 1,285 adults in Florida, 1,302 in Massachusetts, and 3,360 in Michigan was 9.7%, 6.0%, and 4.2%, respectively. Among 736 adults in Florida, 1,246 in Massachusetts, and 2,742 in Michigan that have ever tried to get pregnant, the lifetime infertility prevalence was 25.3% in Florida, 9.9% in Massachusetts, and 5.8% in Michigan. Among those with a history of infertility, over half sought treatment (60.7% in Florida, 70.6% in Massachusetts, and 51.6% in Michigan), the most common being non-assisted reproductive technology fertility treatments (61.3% in Florida, 66.0% in Massachusetts, and 75.9% in Michigan).State-specific estimates of lifetime infertility prevalence in Florida, Massachusetts, and Michigan varied. Variations across states are difficult to interpret, as they likely reflect both true differences in prevalence and differences in data collection questionnaires. State-specific estimates are needed for the prevention, detection, and management of infertility, but estimates should be based on a common set of questions appropriate for these goals.

Abstract

A pair of lab-scale, low-voltage AC and DC hardware testbed systems have been constructed to assist in the development and demonstration of microgrid technologies and control strategies. The AC and DC testbed systems can be operated independently or together as a single hybrid microgrid system. The systems have been designed to be flexible and modular. Sources and loads can be quickly reconfigured to support different experiments. The "User" control system is divided into two components: a low-level reactive layer implemented with programmable logic controllers and grid-tie inverters that have been designed for use with the AC microgrid, and a higher-level layer with a more sophisticated set of objectives. The latter takes advantage of the VOLTTRON platform for the deployment of software agents. A parallel Scenario Generation system is used to create a simulated operational environment for the systems that determines, among other things, the intensity of PV panel illumination. Additionally, the Scenario Generation system can impose fault conditions on the hardware that the User control system must diagnose and mitigate. A set of software agents and a library of supporting modules have been developed to demonstrate some of the capabilities of the system. In this approach, a Utility Agent manages the distribution infrastructure and holds double auctions in which the Utility and Homeowner Agents may participate. A Weather Agent can provide estimates of the simulated environmental variables for the Scenario Generator. Data from two test scenarios are presented. In the first, the ability of the dynamic programming-based planning of the Homeowner Agents and the bid generation algorithm to manage the states of their simulated smart appliances in accordance with the time-varying preferences of the homeowners is demonstrated. In the second, line to ground faults are triggered by the Scenario Generation system that the Utility Agent detects, isolates, and remediates through corrective control actions.
