7. Early age hydration and application of blended magnesium potassium phosphate cements for reduced corrosion of reactive metals

Abstract

Magnesium potassium phosphate cements (MKPC) were investigated to determine their efficacy towards retardation of reactive uranium metal corrosion. Optimised low-water content, fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS) blended MKPC formulations were developed and their fluidity, hydration behaviour, strength and phase assemblage investigated. In-situ time resolved synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction was used to detail the early age (~60 h) phase assemblage development and hydration kinetics, where the inclusion of BFS was observed to delay the formation of struvite-K by ~14 h compared to FA addition (~2 h). All samples set within this period, suggesting the possible formation of a poorly crystalline binding phase prior to struvite-K crystallisation. Long-term corrosion trials using metallic uranium indicated that MKPC systems are capable of limiting uranium corrosion rates (reduced by half), when compared to a UK nuclear industry grout, which highlights their potential application radioactive waste immobilisation.

Abstract

A study conducted on the far-field emission properties of two-dimensional photonic crystal-based organic waveguide lasers is presented. The observed far-field pattern is a consequence of the out-of-plane diffractive coupling of the laser emission that is generated in the plane of the waveguide. The findings led to the conclusion that devices possessing periodicity breaks or defects in the two-dimensional grating generate laser emissions that are scattered in the waveguide's plane.

14. Stepwise observation and quantification and mixed matrix membrane separation of CO2 within a hydroxy-decorated porous host

Abstract

The identification of preferred binding domains within a host structure provides important insights into the function of materials. State-of-the-art reports mostly focus on crystallographic studies of empty and single component guest-loaded host structures to determine the location of guests. However, measurements of material properties (e.g., adsorption and breakthrough of substrates) are usually performed for a wide range of pressure (guest coverage) and/or using multi-component gas mixtures. Here we report the development of a multifunctional gas dosing system for use in X-ray powder diffraction studies on Beamline I11 at Diamond Light Source. This facility is fully automated and enables in situ crystallographic studies of host structures under (i) unlimited target gas loadings and (ii) loading of multi-component gas mixtures. A proof-of-concept study was conducted on a hydroxyl-decorated porous material MFM-300(V-III) under (i) five different CO2 pressures covering the isotherm range and (ii) the loading of equimolar mixtures of CO2/N-2. The study has successfully captured the structural dynamics underpinning CO2 uptake as a function of surface coverage. Moreover, MFM-300(V-III) was incorporated in a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) with PIM-1 in order to evaluate the CO2/N-2 separation potential of this material. Gas permeation measurements on the MMM show a great improvement over the bare PIM-1 polymer for CO2/N-2 separation based on the ideal selectivity.

Abstract

Surface plasmon-polariton rendered an augmented Raman spectroscopic technique used for vibrational spectral analysis of size-specific silicon clusters, Si4, Si6 and Si7. These resulting vibrational frequencies corresponded to those calculated for optimal spectral characteristics. Structural characterization in ground states of energy identified Si4 as a planar rhombus, Si6 as a disoriented octahedron and Si7 as a pentagonal bipyramid. Hartree-Fock method and Moller-Plesset perturbation theory were used to determine the structures and frequencies of these ground state isomers.

The evolution of disorder in response to period adaptation in a hexagonal magnetic bubble array is shown to arise from the proliferation of dislocations and to proceed by means of intermediate states of steadily decreasing hexatic order to an amorphous final state. Remarkably, each dislocation core imposes a size adjustment on bubbles decorating its constituent pair of five- and sevenfold coordinated sites. Topological disorder thus induces intrinsic polydispersity and converts the initially unimodal size distribution into a trimodal one. Abstract

End of Project Report Teagasc acknowledges with gratitude grant aid under the EU Framework Programme (EU FAIR contract No. CT-95-0085). The nutritional benefits of fish oils are generally attributed to their content of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Diets rich in these fatty acids are known to reduce the risk of coronary thrombosis, and are recommended to those who are susceptible to atherosclerosis. In addition, some of these long chain PUFAs play an important role in early infant nutrition, in the development of vital human organs such as the neural tube. However, practical difficulties arise in achieving an adequate daily intake of fish oils to obtain these physiological benefits. Per capita fish consumption is low in many countries, especially of oily fish with high levels of omega-3 PUFAs. Fish oil, while available as a dietary supplement, is not universally appealing in that form. Attempts to incorporate fish oil into food formulations have had limited success mainly because of fishy flavours coming through in the consumer products. Fish oil is particularly susceptible to oxidation, which results in fishy, painty and metallic flavours. Hence the main aim of this study was the development of a dried ingredient in which the formulation and related processing conditions were optimised to protect the fish oil from oxidation. Protection of any sensitive oil may be achieved by means of microencapsulation, whereby oil is dispersed as very fine droplets in emulsions. During subsequent spray drying the droplets are effectively sealed inside a protective coating of protein surrounded by carbohydrate. The objective was, therefore, to evaluate microencapsulation as a means of extending the shelf-life of fish oil in powder form thus increasing its versatility as a nutritional ingredient in food formulations. Abstract

Objective: To investigate the puncture resistance of a recently introduced non-latex, nitrile dental glove in comparison with a latex glove worn during routine clinical dental procedures.Setting: Dentists in general dental practice working within the UK during 1999.Subjects and Methods: 2,020 gloves worn by five general dental practitioners were examined for punctures following standard clinical use by a water inflation method. Procedures undertaken during glove usage and length of time worn were recorded.Results: Following clinical use, 1.9% of the latex gloves and 5.3% of the nitrile gloves had punctures, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.0001). The puncture resistance of the nitrile gloves was superior to the puncture resistance of previously tested worn non-latex (vinyl) gloves. There was no evidence of a statistically significant difference between operators for the percentage or incidence of punctured gloves (P = 0.787) after correcting for glove type. No statistically significant difference was noted between incidence of puncture in the control, unused gloves (n = 200 for each type) and the gloves examined following clinical use (P = 0.907 for nitrile, P = 0.613 for latex).Conclusion: No increase in the number of punctures was noted following clinical use for either glove type. Abstract

To achieve optimal performance in gas storage and delivery applications, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) must combine high gravimetric and volumetric capacities. One potential route to balancing high pore volume with suitable crystal density is interpenetration, where identical nets sit within the void space of one another. Herein, we report an interpenetrated MIL-53 topology MOF, named GUF-1, where one-dimensional Sc(μ2-OH) chains are connected by 4,4′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dibenzoate linkers into a material that is an unusual example of an interpenetrated MOF with a rod-like secondary building unit. A combination of modulated self-assembly and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are used to optimise the porosity of GUF-1; H2adsorption isotherms reveal a moderately high Qstfor H2of 7.6 kJ/mol and a working capacity of 41 g/L in a temperature–pressure swing system, which is comparable to benchmark MOFs. These results show that interpenetration is a potentially viable route to high-performance gas storage materials comprised of relatively simple building blocks.

Abstract

Positional astronomers require a reference frame to which they can refer their observations, and which can be related, at any instant, to an inertial reference frame through dynamical theory. The exect definition of the celestial pole is of considerable practical importance, in order that proper allowance can be made for short period oscillations of observatory coordinates, and to avoid discontinuity in the reference frame as theories of the Earth's rotation are improved.
In this article the principles underlying the measurement of celestial coordinates are described, from the point of view of optical astronomy, and various complexities affecting the optimum definition of the 'ephemeris reference frame' are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
