Abstract

Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfil ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TWp in 2021 to 8.5 TWp by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the photovoltaics community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other., Comment: 160 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

Adoption of terahertz technologies is hindered by the lack of cost-effective THz sources. Here we demonstrate a fundamentally new way to generate and control THz radiation, via spatio-temporal emissivity modulation. By patterning the optical photoexcitation of a surface-passivated silicon wafer, we locally control the free-electron density, and thereby pattern the wafer's emissivity in the THz part of the electromagnetic spectrum. We show how this unconventional source of controllable THz radiation enables a new form of incoherent computational THz imaging. We use it to image various concealed objects, demonstrating this scheme has the penetrating capability of state-of-the-art THz imaging approaches, without the requirement of femto-second pulsed laser sources. Furthermore, the incoherent nature of thermal radiation also ensures the obtained images are free of interference artifacts. Our spatio-temporal emissivity control paves the way towards a new family of long-wavelength structured illumination, imaging and spectroscopy systems.

Abstract

The Social and Emotional Health Survey-Secondary (SEHS-S) is a widely used self-report measure of adolescents' strengths and positive mental health. However, the SEHS-S does not have a proxy (i.e., parent) informant version. A parent form of the SEHS-S could allow school psychologists to gather additional information about students' strengths for intervention and assessment purposes. The development of this measure included three phases. First, we generated items and refined them in a preliminary study. Next, a subsequent confirmatory factor analysis (N = 613) identified the highest-loading items for scale construction. Finally, a validation study (N = 319) asked parents and their children to complete respective versions of the survey. The final 36-item parent measure had strong loadings and adequate model fit matching the factor structure of the self-report version. The SEHS-S-Parent also demonstrated good reliability and correlations with the self-report version, including predicting child well-being as measured by life satisfaction and emotional functioning. The finding that the child and parent self-report measures were highly correlated suggests that parents might provide helpful information about adolescents' strengths, especially when a self-report is unavailable. Limitations regarding the scale's interpretability and implications of a multi-informant approach are considered.

Abstract

We propose semi-analytical models to compute alternating current (AC) power loss in a stack of N high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x (or Y–Ba–Cu–O) tapes subjected to a time-varying magnetic field perpendicular to the tapes with zero transport current. The models take into account screening of the interior superconducting tapes of the stack from the external magnetic field. We validate the results by experiments carried out at temperature T = 77.2 K under an applied magnetic field with the amplitude of its induction B ext = 0.57 T and frequencies up to 110 Hz. As follows from our models, the AC loss per tape in stacks of N tapes decreases with N in agreement with experiments. The approach is extended to compute the AC loss for lower temperatures, larger magnetic fields strengths, and for frequencies up to several kHz. Abstract

Muons are part of natural cosmic radiation but can also be generated at spallation sources for material science and particle physics applications. Recently, pulsed muons have been used to characterize the density of free charge carriers in semiconductors and their recombination lifetime. Muon beam irradiation can also result in the formation of dilute levels of crystal defects in silicon. These crystal defects are only detected in high carrier lifetime silicon samples that are highly sensitive to defects due to their long recombination lifetimes. This work investigates the characteristics of these defects in terms of their formation, recombination activity, and deactivation. Charge carrier lifetime assessments and photoluminescence imaging have great sensitivity to measure the generated defects in high-quality silicon samples exposed to ∼4 MeV (anti)muons and their recombination activity despite the extremely low concentration. The defects reduce the effective charge carrier lifetime of both p- and n-type silicon and appear to be more detrimental to n-type silicon. Defects are created by transmission of muons through the wafer, and there are indications that slowed or implanted muons may create additional defects. In a post-exposure isochronal annealing study, we observe that annealing at temperatures of up to 450 °C does not by itself fully deactivate the defects. A recovery of charge carrier lifetime was observed when the annealing was combined with Al2O3 surface passivation, probably due to passivation of bulk defects from hydrogen from the dielectric film. Abstract

In our previously published work, we have reported colossal magnetoresistance, Andreev oscillations, ferromagnetism, and granular superconductivity in oxygen-implanted carbon fibers, graphite foils, and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. In this follow-up research, more results on these oxygen-implanted graphite samples are presented. We show results from transport measurements on oxygen-implanted diamond-like carbon thin coatings, amorphous carbon films, and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Significantly, a three-order magnitude drop in the electrical resistance of the oxygen-implanted diamond-like carbon films is observed at the 50 K temperature that we have previously reported for the transition to the superconducting state. Below 50 K, the films resistance oscillates between the high and low resistance states, less when the sample is under a transverse magnetic field. This metastability between the insulating and superconducting-like states possibly reflects the evolution of the amplitude for the superconducting order parameter also known as the longitudinal Higgs mode. Transitions to low resistance state and metastability are also observed for amorphous carbon films. Finally, the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples resistance have a thermally activated term that can be understood on the basis of the LAMH model applied to narrow SC channels in which thermal fluctuations can cause phase slips. We also find that in oxygen-implanted carbon materials, the electron charge and spin correlations do not compete and their interplay rather facilitates the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity, and thus, additional unexpected effects like Heisenberg spin waves and magneto-structural transitions are observed., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures
