Abstract

Paramagnetic (open-shell) systems, including transition metal ions, radical intermediates and defect centres, are often involved in catalytic transformations. Despite the prevalence of such species in catalysis, there are relatively few studies devoted to their characterisation, compared to their diamagnetic counterparts. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) is an ideal technique perfectly suited to characterise such reaction centres, providing valuable insights into the molecular and supramolecular structure, the electronic structure, the dynamics and even the concentration of the paramagnetic systems under investigation. Furthermore, as EPR is such a versatile technique, samples can be measured as liquids, solids (frozen solutions and powders) and single crystals, making it ideal for studies in heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzyme catalysis. Coupled with the higher resolving power of the pulsed, higher frequency and hyperfine techniques, unsurpassed detail on the structure of these catalytic centres can be obtained. In this Chapter, we provide an overview to demonstrate how advanced EPR methods can be successfully exploited in the study of open-shell paramagnetic reaction centres in heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzymatic catalysts, including heme-based enzymes for use in biocatalysts, polymerisation based catalysts, supported microporous heterogeneous catalytic centres to homogeneous metal complexes for small molecule actions.

Abstract

Recent laboratory studies have demonstrated that isoprene oxidation products can partition to atmospheric aerosols by reacting with condensed phase sulfuric acid, forming low-volatility organosulfate compounds. We have identified organosulfate compounds in free tropospheric aerosols by single particle mass spectrometry during several airborne field campaigns. One of these organosulfates is identified as the sulfate ester of IEPOX, a second generation oxidation product of isoprene. The patterns of IEPOX sulfate ester in ambient data generally followed the aerosol acidity and N[O.sub.x] dependence established by laboratory studies. Detection of the IEPOX sulfate ester was most sensitive using reduced ionization laser power, when it was observed in up to 80% of particles in the tropical free troposphere. Based on laboratory mass calibrations, IEPOX added >0.4% to tropospheric aerosol mass in the remote tropics and up to 20% in regions downwind of isoprene sources. In the southeastern United States, when acidic aerosol was exposed to fresh isoprene emissions, accumulation of IEPOX increased aerosol mass by up to 3%. The IEPOX sulfate ester is therefore one of the most abundant single organic compounds measured in atmospheric aerosol. Abstract

This article addresses the need for new data on indirect effects of natural and anthropogenic aerosol particles on atmospheric ice clouds. Simultaneous measurements of the concentration and composition of tropospheric aerosol particles capable of initiating ice in cold (cirrus) clouds are reported. Measurements support that cirrus formation occurs both by heterogeneous nucleation by insoluble particles and homogeneous (spontaneous) freezing of particles containing solutions. Heterogeneous ice nuclei concentrations in the cirrus regime depend on temperature, relative humidity, and the concentrations and physical and chemical properties of aerosol particles. Abstract

Small volatile sulphate particles are the most common type of aerosol in the marine boundary layer, while most of the aerosol mass is made up of larger sizes of sea salt particles. Mid-sized aerosols scatter the sun's radiation and so are very relevant to climatic changes. Evidence from the Southern Ocean indicates that these aerosols in the marine boundary layer contain sea-salt and these can account for most of the aerosol-scattered light.

Abstract

Remote sensing measurements of temperature fluctuations on isentropic surfaces, as well as in situ measurements, are used to show that even high-resolution trajectory calculations seriously underestimate the rate of change of temperature experienced by air parcels. Rapid temperature fluctuations will affect the nucleation of polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) droplets and could promote the formation of metastable phases in PSCs. Meso-scale temperature fluctuations are large enough to produce significant departures from equilibrium in established PSCs. The large cooling rates experienced by air parcels have important implications for denitrification and dehydration: nearly all condensation nuclei should be activated when a PSC is first formed and mass must be redistributed to larger aerosols during the evolution of a PSC if denitrification is to occur.

A highly crystalline cobalt-substituted aluminophosphate with an AEN topology, labeled CoIST-2, has been synthesized and characterized by powder XRD, TG/DSC, diffuse reflectance UV- vis spectroscopy, FTIR, EPR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Both water and methylamine were shown to play a complementary role as dual template and space-filling agents during the hydrothermal synthesis of this material.

Abstract

A detailed study of the selective oxidation of cyclohexane has been performed using bimetallic gold–palladium catalysts supported on magnesium oxide. Mono-metallic supported gold or palladium catalysts show limited activity for cyclohexane oxidation. However, a significantly enhanced catalytic performance is observed when supported gold–palladium alloy catalysts are used for this particular reaction. This synergy is observed for alloys spanning a wide range of gold-to-palladium molar ratios. Mechanistic studies reveal a promotion effect that occurs from alloying palladium with gold on the supported catalyst, which significantly improves the homo-cleavage of the O–O bond in cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, an important intermediate species in cyclohexane oxidation.

Abstract

Molybdenum blue (MB), a multivalent molybdenum oxide with a nano-ring morphology is well-known in analytical chemistry but, to date it has been largely ignored in other applications. In the present work, MB has been characterized by STEM-HAADF imaging for the first time, showing the nano-ring morphology of this complex molybdenum oxide and the ordered super-molecular framework crystals that can result from the self-assembly of these MB nano-ring units. The potential of MB as an oxidation catalyst has also been investigated, where it is shown to have excellent catalytic activity and stability in the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone which are important intermediates in the production of nylon.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of applying the C-13-octanoic acid breath test for assessment of gastric emptying in ponies by investigating the pattern of C-13 enrichment in breath following the administration of a test meal +/- C-13-octanoic acid. After a 14 h fast, the ponies received either no meal (Test I) or a standardised test meal labelled with 0 mg (Test 11), 125 mg (Test III), 250 mg (Test IV) or 500 mg (Test V) C-13-octanoic acid. For each test (I-V), exhaled breath samples were collected in duplicate at 1 h and immediately before ingestion of the test meal and at frequent intervals thereafter for 12 ll, Breath samples were analysed by continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry, Three indices of breath C-13-enrichment were computed; half dose recovery time (t1/2), gastric emptying coefficient (GEC) and time to peak breath C-13-enrichment t(max), For Tests I and II, the ratio of (CO2)-C-13:(CO2)-C-12 remained stable for the duration of the sampling period. For Tests III, IV and V, an increase in the ratio of (CO2)-C-13:(CO2)-C-12 was detected. The test was reproducible within individuals, and intersubject variation was low, Further validation studies of this noninvasive technique are justified.
