Free-electron-lasers fill a critical gap in the space of THz-sources as they can reach high average and peak powers with spectral tunability. Using a waveguide in a THz FEL significantly increases the coupling between the relativistic electrons and electromagnetic field enabling large amounts of radiation to be generated in a single passage of electrons through the undulator. In addition to transversely confining the radiation, the dispersive properties of the waveguide critically affect the velocity and slippage of the radiation pulse which determine the central frequency and bandwidth of the generated radiation. In this paper, we characterize the spectral properties of a compact waveguide THz FEL including simultaneous lasing at two different frequencies and demonstrating tuning of the radiation wavelength in the high frequency branch by varying the beam energy and ensuring that the electrons injected into the undulator are prebunched on the scale of the resonant radiation wavelength.

Production of hard X-ray via inverse Compton scattering at photon energies below 100 keV range aimed at potential applications in medicine and material research is reported. Experiments have been performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Accelerator Test Facility, employing the counter collision of a 70 MeV, 0.3 nC electron beam with a near infra-red Nd: YAG laser (1064 nm wavelength) pulse containing ~ 100 mJ in a single shot basis. The radiation distribution of the scattered photon beam is assessed to be sufficiently quasi monochromatic to produce clear contrast from the Au K- edge at 80.7 keV.

With the growing number of cancer cases and deaths around the world, fast, non-invasive, and inexpensive screening is paramount. We examine the feasibility of such cancer detection using the X-ray scattering properties of nails in the canine model. A total of 945 samples taken from 266 dogs were measured, with 84 animals diagnosed with cancer. To analyze the obtained X-ray diffraction patterns of keratin, we propose a method based on the two-dimensional Fourier transformation of the images. We compare 745 combinations of data preprocessing steps and machine learning classifiers and determine the corresponding performance metrics. Excellent classification results are demonstrated, with sensitivity or specificity achieving 100% and the best value for balanced accuracy being 87.5%. We believe that our approach can be extended to human samples to develop a non-invasive, convenient, and cheap method for early cancer detection.

Using a waveguide in a THz FEL has been shown to maximize the coupling and enable efficient extraction of relativistic electron beam energy from a single passage through a tapered helical undulator. An oscillator configuration can further boost energy extraction above the single-pass limits and open the door toward very high average power THz sources. Embedding the undulator in an oscillator cavity is particularly useful in combination with high repetition rate electron sources, even if at reduced peak brightness, since recycling a fraction of the radiation as an intense seed can compensate for lower single-pass gain. In this paper, we investigate the efficiency scaling of a tapering-enhanced waveguide oscillator, showcasing its capability for frequency-tuning operation and high-efficiency operation at different wavelengths. Using a thermionic-driven beamline equipped with compression elements, numerical start-to-end simulation results indicate a 16% efficiency at 200 GHz and a 2.1% efficiency at 1.5 THz, resulting in kW-level average power out-coupled in radiation pulses with few hundred μJ energy and tens of MW peak power.

In the field of beam physics, two frontier topics have taken center stage due to their potential to enable new approaches to discovery in a wide swath of science. These areas are: advanced, high gradient acceleration techniques, and x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs). Further, there is intense interest in the marriage of these two fields, with the goal of producing a very compact XFEL. In this context, recent advances in high gradient radio-frequency cryogenic copper structure research have opened the door to the use of surface electric fields between 250 and 500 MV m-1. Such an approach is foreseen to enable a new generation of photoinjectors with six-dimensional beam brightness beyond the current state-of-the-art by well over an order of magnitude. This advance is an essential ingredient enabling an ultra-compact XFEL (UC-XFEL). In addition, one may accelerate these bright beams to GeV scale in less than 10 m. Such an injector, when combined with inverse free electron laser-based bunching techniques can produce multi-kA beams with unprecedented beam quality, quantified by 50 nm-rad normalized emittances. The emittance, we note, is the effective area in transverse phase space (x, px/mec) or (y, py/mec) occupied by the beam distribution, and it is relevant to achievable beam sizes as well as setting a limit on FEL wavelength. These beams, when injected into innovative, short-period (1–10 mm) undulators uniquely enable UC-XFELs having footprints consistent with university-scale laboratories. We describe the architecture and predicted performance of this novel light source, which promises photon production per pulse of a few percent of existing XFEL sources. We review implementation issues including collective beam effects, compact x-ray optics systems, and other relevant technical challenges. To illustrate the potential of such a light source to fundamentally change the current paradigm of XFELs with their limited access, we examine possible applications in biology, chemistry, materials, atomic physics, industry, and medicine—including the imaging of virus particles—which may profit from this new model of performing XFEL science.

Recently, considerable work has been directed at the development of an ultracompact X-ray free-electron laser (UCXFEL) based on emerging techniques in high-field cryogenic acceleration, with attendant dramatic improvements in electron beam brightness and state-of-the-art concepts in beam dynamics, magnetic undulators, and X-ray optics. A full conceptual design of a 1 nm (1.24 keV) UCXFEL with a length and cost over an order of magnitude below current X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has resulted from this effort. This instrument has been developed with an emphasis on permitting exploratory scientific research in a wide variety of fields in a university setting. Concurrently, compact FELs are being vigorously developed for use as instruments to enable next-generation chip manufacturing through use as a high-flux, few nm lithography source. This new role suggests consideration of XFELs to urgently address emerging demands in the semiconductor device sector, as identified by recent national need studies, for new radiation sources aimed at chip manufacturing. Indeed, it has been shown that one may use coherent X-rays to perform 10–20 nm class resolution surveys of macroscopic, cm scale structures such as chips, using ptychographic laminography techniques. As the XFEL is a very promising candidate for realizing such methods, we present here an analysis of the issues and likely solutions associated with extending the UCXFEL to harder X-rays (above 7 keV), much higher fluxes, and increased levels of coherence, as well as methods of applying such a source for ptychographic laminography to microelectronic device measurements. We discuss the development path to move the concept to rapid realization of a transformative XFEL-based application, outlining both FEL and metrology system challenges.

The FAST beamline is the injector for the planned Gamma-Ray Electron ENhanced Source (GREENS) program, which aims to achieve the demonstration and first application of a high-efficiency, high-average-power free-electron laser at 515 nm. FAST-GREENS requires high 5D peak brightness; transverse normalized projected emittances of 3 mm-mrad and a peak current of 600 A are the minimum beam requirements for the FEL to reach the 10% efficiency goal. In this work, studies of the low-energy section of the FAST beamline are presented toward these ends, including preliminary measurements of beam compression and beam emittance. An effort toward developing a high-fidelity simulation model that could be later optimized for FAST-GREENS is presented.

Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) is an emerging compact X-ray source technology, where the small source size and high spectral brightness are of interest for multitude of applications. However, to satisfy the practical flux requirements, a high-repetition-rate ICS system needs to be developed. To this end, this paper reports the experimental demonstration of a high peak brightness ICS source operating in a burst mode at 40 MHz. A pulse train interaction has been achieved by recirculating a picosecond CO2 laser pulse inside an active optical cavity synchronized to the electron beam. The pulse train ICS performance has been characterized at 5- and 15- pulses per train and compared to a single pulse operation under the same operating conditions. With the observed near-linear X-ray photon yield gain due to recirculation, as well as noticeably higher operational reliability, the burst-mode ICS offers a great potential for practical scalability towards high duty cycles.

A timing method for experiments on the interaction of a near-infrared laser and an ultra-relativistic electron beam via a semiconductor plasma switch is experimentally validated. As an intermediate medium, a thin Si plate is excited by the energetic, intense electron beam to produce a semiconductor plasma, which in turn deflects counter-colliding laser light having 1 μm wavelength. An electron beam of sub-nC charge sufficiently induces the needed electron number density gradient of 1 × 1020 cm−3 per tens of μm length at the interaction point. Demonstration during an inverse Compton scattering experiment by a counter-colliding electron beam of 300 pC and 70 MeV with an Nd: YAG laser at a wavelength of 1 μm is reported. Synchronized, independently tunable and focused $\mu$J-class laser pulses areused to release multiple electron populations via photo-ionization inside anelectron-beam driven plasma wave. By varying the laser foci in the laboratoryframe and the position of the underdense photocathodes in the co-moving frame,the delays between the produced bunches and their energies are adjusted. Theresulting multibunches have ultra-high quality and brightness, allowing forhitherto impossible bunch configurations such as spatially overlapping bunchpopulations with strictly separated energies, which opens up a new regime forlight sources such as free-electron-lasers.

The production of high spectral brilliance radiation from electron beam sources depends critically on the electron beam qualities. One must obtain very high electron beam brightness, implying simultaneous high peak current and low emittance. These attributes are enabled through the use of very high field acceleration in a radio-frequency (rf) photoinjector source. Despite the high fields currently utilized, there is a limit on the achievable peak current in high brightness operation, in the range of tens of Ampere. This limitation can be overcome by the use of a hybrid standing wave/traveling wave structure; the standing wave portion provides acceleration at a high field from the photocathode, while the traveling wave part yields strong velocity bunching. This approach is explored here in a C-band scenario, at field strengths (>100 MV/m) at the current state-of-the-art. It is found that one may arrive at an electron beam with many hundreds of Amperes with well-sub-micron normalized emittance. This extremely compact injector system also possesses attractive simplification of the rf distribution system by eliminating the need for an rf circulator. We explore the use of this device in a compact 400 MeV-class source, driving both inverse Compton scattering and free-electron laser radiation sources with unique, attractive properties.

The development of novel high-gradient accelerating structures operating at THz frequencies is critical for future free-electron lasers and TeV scale linear colliders. To reach high energies with reasonable length requires high accelerating gradients of ~100 MV/m. The main limitation to reaching these high-energy gradients is the vacuum RF breakdown phenomenon, which disrupts normal accelerator operations. For stable operations and to understand the breakdown microscopic dynamics, a new device capable of detecting the breakdown occurrences is required. In this paper, we provide the design of a pulse length monitor based on an analog to digital converter for fast signal digitization without the need to use high-speed digitizers to be used in a commercial mm-wave heterodyne spectrometer.

The capability of accelerating electron bunches at high repetition rate is one of the key performance criteria for all high average power particle accelerator applications. High gradient laser-driven acceleration holds the potential for greatly reducing size and costs of future machines, but typically requires very high peak laser powers. On the other hand, MHz pulse trains of TW-class laser beams are much beyond the state of the art, so that laser recycling and recirculation is a necessary step to bridge that gap. In this experiment we demonstrate for the first time an inverse free electron laser accelerator (IFEL) operating within an active optical cavity showing the ability to laser-accelerate electron bunch trains in burst mode at >20 MHz repetition rate. The experimental setup, synchronization challenges and acceleration results are presented. It is found that careful control of the dispersive properties of the cavity is required in order to sustain high accelerating gradients over many passes in the laser pulse train.
