Context. The Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-Rays (STIX) onboard Solar Orbiter was designed to observe solar flares in the X-ray range of 4-150 keV, providing spectral, temporal and spatial information. Besides 30 imaging detectors, STIX has two additional detectors, the coarse flare locator (CFL) and the background (BKG) detector. Flares observed from Earth are classified using their peak X-ray flux observed by the GOES satellites. Roughly half of all flares observed by STIX are located on the backside of the Sun. These flares lack a GOES-class classification. Aims. In this paper, we describe the calibration of the BKG detector aperture sizes. Using the calibrated measurements of the BKG detector, we explore the relationship between the peak flux for flares jointly observed by STIX and GOES. This allows us to estimate the GOES flare classes of backside flares using STIX measurements. Methods. We looked at the 500 largest flares observed by both STIX and GOES in the time range Feb. 21 to Apr. 23. Aperture size calibration is done by comparing 4-10 keV counts of the BKG detector with the CFL measurements. In a second step, we correlate the calibrated STIX BKG peak flux with the GOES peak flux for individual flares. Results. We calibrated the BKG detector aperture sizes of STIX. Further, we showed that for the larger flares a close power law fit exists between the STIX BKG and GOES peak flux with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.97. This correlation provides a GOES proxy with a one sigma uncertainty of 11%. We were able to show that the BKG detector can reliably measure a broad range of GOES flare classes from roughly B5 up to at least X85 (assuming a radial distance of 1AU), making it an interesting detector-concept for future space weather missions. Long, powerful soft detection forward error correction codes are typically constructed by concatenation of shorter component codes that are decoded through iterative Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) procedures. The current gold-standard is Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, which are built from weak single parity check component codes that are capable of producing accurate SO. Due to the recent development of SISO decoders that produce highly accurate SO with codes that have multiple redundant bits, square product code constructions that can avail of more powerful component codes have been shown to be competitive with the LDPC codes in the 5G New Radio standard in terms of decoding performance while requiring fewer iterations to converge. Motivated by applications that require more powerful low-rate codes, in the present paper we explore the possibility of extending this design space by considering the construction and decoding of cubic tensor codes.

Here, we present a new thermomechanical geodynamic, numerical implementation that incorporates Maxwell viscoelastic rheology accounting for temperature-dependent power-law dislocation creep and pressure-sensitive, non-associated Drucker-Prager brittle failure, as well as for volumetric stresses and strains during viscoplastic flow, a departure from the traditional incompressible assumptions. In solving for energy conservation, we incorporate the heat source term resulting from irreversible mechanical deformations, which embodies viscoelastic and viscoplastic work, and by considering the total stress tensor and total inelastic strain rate tensors, including dilatant plasticity effects for lithospheric-scale applications, instead of only the shear terms as is usually assumed for incompressible materials. This form of the work term thus allows to consider, volumetric deformation and to couple the energy equation to the constitutive description, and hence the stress balance, via the evolving temperature field. Code design enables us to switch individual features of this general rheology ``on or off'' and thus to benchmark this implementation with published numerical experiments of crustal-scale shortening experiments. We investigate whether ``brittle-plastic'' compressibility can promote or inhibit localization of deformation and thermal evolution during compression for crustal, and upper mantle rheology. For both crustal-scale and lithospheric-scale experiments, we establish that the feedback from volumetric dissipation, while contributing to temperature increase along with shear dissipation, can potentially slow down heat production per unit time, depending on the choice of boundary conditions. Our new implementation can be used to address buckling problems and collision tectonics.

We introduce an algorithm for approximating the codebook probability that is compatible with all successive cancellation (SC)-based decoding algorithms, including SC list (SCL) decoding. This approximation is based on an auxiliary distribution that mimics the dynamics of decoding algorithms with an SC decoding schedule. Based on this codebook probability and SCL decoding, we introduce soft-output SCL (SO-SCL) to generate both blockwise and bitwise soft-output (SO). Using that blockwise SO, we first establish that, in terms of both block error rate (BLER) and undetected error rate (UER), SO-SCL decoding of dynamic Reed-Muller (RM) codes significantly outperforms the CRC-concatenated polar codes from 5G New Radio under SCL decoding. Moreover, using SO-SCL, the decoding misdetection rate (MDR) can be constrained to not exceed any predefined value, making it suitable for practical systems. Proposed bitwise SO can be readily generated from blockwise SO via a weighted sum of beliefs that includes a term where SO is weighted by the codebook probability, resulting in a soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoder. Guessing Codeword Decoding (GCD) is a recently proposed soft-input forward error correction decoder for arbitrary binary linear codes. Inspired by recent proposals that leverage binary linear codebook structure to reduce the number of queries made by Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND), for binary linear codes that include a full-message single parity-check (SPC) bit, we show that it is possible to reduce the number of queries made by GCD by a factor of up to 2 with the greatest guesswork reduction realized at lower SNRs, without impacting decoding precision. Codes without a full-message SPC can be modified to include one by changing a column of the generator matrix to obtain a decoding complexity advantage, and we demonstrate that this can often be done without losing decoding precision. To practically avail of the complexity advantage, a noise effect pattern generator capable of producing sequences for given Hamming weights, such as the landslide algorithm developed for ORBGRAND, is necessary., Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures

We introduce a novel approach to error correction decoding in the presence of additive alpha-stable noise, which serves as a model of interference-limited wireless systems. In the absence of modifications to decoding algorithms, treating alpha-stable distributions as Gaussian results in significant performance loss. Building on Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND), we consider two approaches. The first accounts for alpha-stable noise in the evaluation of log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) that serve as input to Ordered Reliability Bits GRAND (ORBGRAND). The second builds on an ORBGRAND variant that was originally designed to account for jamming that treats outlying LLRs as erasures. This results in a hybrid error and erasure correcting decoder that corrects errors via ORBGRAND and corrects erasures via Gaussian elimination. The block error rate (BLER) performance of both approaches are similar. Both outperform decoding assuming that the LLRs originated from Gaussian noise by 2 to 3 dB for [128,112] 5G NR CA-Polar and CRC codes.

Large language models have drastically changed the prospects of AI by introducing technologies for more complex natural language processing. However, current methodologies to train such LLMs require extensive resources including but not limited to large amounts of data, expensive machinery, and lengthy training. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new tokenization method inspired by universal Lempel-Ziv-Welch data compression that compresses repetitive phrases into multi-word tokens. With MultiTok as a new tokenizing tool, we show that language models are able to be trained notably more efficiently while offering a similar accuracy on more succinct and compressed training data. In fact, our results demonstrate that MultiTok achieves a comparable performance to the BERT standard as a tokenizer while also providing close to 2.5x faster training with more than 30% less training data.

Context. Green valley (GV) galaxies are objects defined on a color-magnitude, or color-mass, diagram which are associated with a transition from a star-forming to a quiescent state (quenching), or vice versa (rejuvenation). Aims. We study the sub-mm emission of galaxies in the GV and link it with their physical evolutionary properties. Methods. We exploit a semi-analytic model (SAM) for galaxy evolution which includes a detailed treatment of dust production and evolution in galactic contexts. We model the observational properties of simulated galaxies by post-processing the SAM catalogs with the spectral synthesis and radiative transfer code GRASIL. Results. Our model produces a clear bimodality (and thus a GV) in the color-mass diagram, although some tensions arise when compared to observations. After having introduced a new criterion for identifying the GV in any dataset, we find that most blue and GV galaxies in our model are emitters at $250\,{\mu \rm m}$ (with fluxes $\geq 25\,{\rm mJy}$), in keeping with GAMA results. In the color-$S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ diagram, GV galaxies exhibit intermediate colors yet maintain significant sub-mm fluxes. This occurs because, while specific star formation rates drop sharply during quenching, the dust content remains relatively high during the GV transition, powering sub-mm emission. Rejuvenating galaxies in the GV, which were previously red, have experienced a star formation burst that shifts their color to green, but their $S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ fluxes remain low due to still low dust mass. Conclusions. Our galaxy evolution model highlights the delay between star formation and dust evolution, showing that sub-mm emission is not always a safe indicator of star formation activity, with quenching (rejuvenating) GV galaxies featuring relatively large (low) sub-mm emission., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. In general, large solar flares are more efficient at accelerating high-energy electrons than microflares. Nonetheless, we sometimes observe microflares that accelerate electrons to high energies. We statistically characterize 39 microflares with strikingly hard spectra in the hard X-ray (HXR) range, which means that they are efficient in accelerating high-energy electrons. We refer to these events as "hard microflares." The statistical analysis is built upon spectral and imaging information from STIX, combined with EUV and magnetic field maps from SDO. The key observational result is that all hard microflares in this dataset have one of the footpoints rooted directly within a sunspot (either in the umbra or the penumbra). This clearly indicates that the underlying magnetic flux densities are large. For the events with the classic two-footpoints morphology, the absolute value of the mean line-of-sight magnetic flux density (and vector magnetic field strength) at the footpoint rooted within the sunspot ranges from 600 to 1800 G (1500 to 2500 G), whereas the outer footpoint measures from 10 to 200 G (100 to 400 G), therefore about 10 times weaker. Approximately 78% of hard microflares, which exhibited two HXR footpoints, have similar or even stronger HXR flux from the footpoint rooted within the sunspot. This contradicts the magnetic mirroring scenario. In addition, about 74% of the events could be approximated by a single loop geometry, demonstrating that hard microflares typically have a relatively simple morphology. We conclude that all hard microflares are rooted in sunspots, which implies that the magnetic field strength plays a key role in efficiently accelerating high-energy electrons, with hard HXR spectra associated with strong fields. This paper presents several methods for minimizing packet service time in networks using 5G and beyond. We propose leveraging network coding alongside Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) to reduce service time as well as optimizing Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) selection based on the service time. Our network coding approach includes a method to increase the number of packets in flight, adhering to the current standard of the 16 HARQ process limit, demonstrating that these strategies can enhance throughput and reduce latency. Experimental results show that network coding reduces service times by up to 7% in low SNR regimes, with greater reduction across all SNR as the number of packets in flight increases, suggesting that future 6G standards should consider increasing the number of HARQ processes for better performance.

We unveil a new scenario for the formation of dissipative localised structures in nonlinear systems. Commonly, the formation of such structures arises from the connection of a homogeneous steady state with either another homogeneous solution or a pattern. Both scenarios, typically found in cavities with normal and anomalous dispersion, respectively, exhibit unique fingerprints and particular features that characterise their behaviour. However, we show that the introduction of a periodic non-Hermitian modulation in Kerr cavities hybridises the two established soliton formation mechanisms, embodying the particular fingerprints of both. In the resulting novel scenario, the stationary states acquire a dual behaviour, playing the role that was unambiguously attributed to either homogeneous states or patterns. We present an experiment investigating the rotational Doppler effect using a single trapped ion excited by two copropagating vortex laser beams. The setup isolates the azimuthal gradients of the fields, eliminating longitudinal and curvature effects. We provide a detailed characterization of the phenomenon by deterministically positioning a single ion across the beams, achieving a signal which depends on the angular velocity of the ion and the difference of optical orbital angular momentum between the two beams. The interpretation of the measurements is supported by numerical simulations and by a simplified analytical model. Our results reveal key properties of the rotational Doppler effect, showing that it increases approaching the center of the beam and that it is independent of the waist of the beam. This offers insights into the feasibility of super-kicks or super-Doppler shifts for sensing and manipulating atomic motion transverse to the beams' propagation direction., Comment: 5+6 pages, 2+4 figures

We establish that it is possible to extract accurate blockwise and bitwise soft output from Guessing Codeword Decoding with minimal additional computational complexity by considering it as a variant of Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding. Blockwise soft output can be used to control decoding misdetection rate while bitwise soft output results in a soft-input soft-output decoder that can be used for efficient iterative decoding of long, high redundancy codes.

We use regression discontinuity design and difference-in-differences methods to estimate the impact of a one-time hiring subsidy for low-educated unemployed youths in Belgium during the recovery from the Great Recession. Within a year of unemployment, the subsidy increases job-finding in the private sector by 10 percentage points. Over six years, high school graduates secure 2.8 more quarters of private employment. However, they transition from public jobs and self-employment, resulting in no net increase in overall employment, albeit with better wages. High school dropouts experience no lasting benefits. Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) significantly impact patients' ability to speak, affecting their quality of life. Commonly used metrics for assessing pathological speech are subjective, prompting the need for automated and unbiased evaluation methods. This study proposes a self-supervised Wav2Vec2-based model for phone classification with HNC patients, to enhance accuracy and improve the discrimination of phonetic features for subsequent interpretability purpose. The impact of pre-training datasets, model size, and fine-tuning datasets and parameters are explored. Evaluation on diverse corpora reveals the effectiveness of the Wav2Vec2 architecture, outperforming a CNN-based approach, used in previous work. Correlation with perceptual measures also affirms the model relevance for impaired speech analysis. We study homotopy theory of the category of spectral sequences with respect to the class of weak equivalences given by maps which are quasi-isomorphisms on a fixed page. We introduce the category of extended spectral sequences and show that this is bicomplete by analysis of a certain linear presheaf category modelled on discs. We endow the category of extended spectral sequences with various model category structures, restricting to give the almost Brown category structures on spectral sequences of our earlier work. One of these has the property that spectral sequences is a homotopically full subcategory. By results of Meier, this exhibits the category of spectral sequences as a fibrant object in the Barwick-Kan model structure on relative categories, that is, it gives a model for an infinity category of spectral sequences. We also use the presheaf approach to define two d\'ecalage functors on spectral sequences, left and right adjoint to a shift functor, thereby clarifying prior use of the term d\'ecalage in connection with spectral sequences., Comment: 46 pages

In this work, we introduce a new technique for taking a single-secret sharing scheme with a general access structure and transforming it into an individually secure multi-secret sharing scheme where every secret has the same general access structure. To increase the information rate, we consider Individual Security which guarantees zero mutual information with each secret individually, for any unauthorized subsets. Our approach involves identifying which shares of the single-secret sharing scheme can be replaced by linear combinations of messages. When $m-1$ shares are replaced, our scheme obtains an information rate of $m/|S|$, where $S$ is the set of shares. This provides an improvement over the information rate of $1/|S|$ in the original single-secret sharing scheme.

The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a significant advancement in digital technology, with its rapidly growing network of interconnected devices. This expansion, however, brings forth critical challenges in data security and reliability, especially under the threat of increasing cyber vulnerabilities. Addressing the security concerns, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is commonly employed for secure encryption in IoT systems. Our study explores an innovative use of AES, by repurposing AES padding bits for error correction and thus introducing a dual-functional method that seamlessly integrates error-correcting capabilities into the standard encryption process. The integration of the state-of-the-art Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoder (GRAND) in the receiver's architecture facilitates the joint decoding and decryption process. This strategic approach not only preserves the existing structure of the transmitter but also significantly enhances communication reliability in noisy environments, achieving a notable over 3 dB gain in Block Error Rate (BLER). Remarkably, this enhanced performance comes with a minimal power overhead at the receiver - less than 15% compared to the traditional decryption-only process, underscoring the efficiency of our hardware design for IoT applications. This paper discusses a comprehensive analysis of our approach, particularly in energy efficiency and system performance, presenting a novel and practical solution for reliable IoT communications.

Quantifying cyber risks is essential for organizations to grasp their vulnerability to threats and make informed decisions. However, current approaches still need to work on blending economic viewpoints to provide insightful analysis. To bridge this gap, we introduce QBER approach to offer decision-makers measurable risk metrics. The QBER evaluates losses from cyberattacks, performs detailed risk analyses based on existing cybersecurity measures, and provides thorough cost assessments. Our contributions involve outlining cyberattack probabilities and risks, identifying Technical, Economic, and Legal (TEL) impacts, creating a model to gauge impacts, suggesting risk mitigation strategies, and examining trends and challenges in implementing widespread Cyber Risk Quantification (CRQ). Network slicing has emerged as an integral concept in 5G, aiming to partition the physical network infrastructure into isolated slices, customized for specific applications. We theoretically formulate the key performance metrics of an application, in terms of goodput and delivery delay, at a cost of network resources in terms of bandwidth. We explore an un-coded communication protocol that uses feedback-based repetitions, and a coded protocol, implementing random linear network coding and using coding-aware acknowledgments. We find that coding reduces the resource demands of a slice to meet the requirements for an application, thereby serving more applications efficiently. Coded slices thus free up resources for other slices, be they coded or not. Based on these results, we propose a hybrid approach, wherein coding is introduced selectively in certain network slices. This approach not only facilitates a smoother transition from un-coded systems to coded systems but also reduces costs across all slices. Theoretical findings in this paper are validated and expanded upon through real-time simulations of the network.

To meet the challenges of high-resolution molecular spectroscopy, increasingly sophisticated spectroscopic techniques were developed. For a long time FTIR and laser-based spectroscopies were used for these studies. The recent development of dual-comb spectroscopy at high-resolution makes this technique a powerful tool for gas phase studies. We report on the use and characterization of the IRis-F1, a tabletop mid-infrared dual-comb spectrometer, in the newly developed step-sweep mode. The resolution of the wavenumber axis is increased by step-wise tuning (interleaving) and accurate measurement of the laser center wavelength and repetition frequency. Doppler limited measurements of N2O and CH4 reveal a wavenumber accuracy of 1E-4 cm-1 on the covered range of > 50 cm-1. Measured half-widths of absorption lines show no systematic broadening, indicating a negligible instrument response function. Finally, measurements of nitrogen pressure broadening coefficients in the v4 band of methane show that quantum cascade laser dual-comb spectroscopy in step-sweep mode is well adapted for measurements of precision spectroscopic data, in particular line shape parameters.

Threat modeling has emerged as a key process for understanding relevant threats within businesses. However, understanding the importance of threat events is rarely driven by the business incorporating the system. Furthermore, prioritization of threat events often occurs based on abstract and qualitative scoring. While such scores enable prioritization, they do not allow the results to be easily interpreted by decision-makers. This can hinder downstream activities, such as discussing security investments and a security control's economic applicability. This article introduces QuantTM, an approach that incorporates views from operational and strategic business representatives to collect threat information during the threat modeling process to measure potential financial loss incurred by a specific threat event. It empowers the analysis of threats' impacts and the applicability of security controls, thus supporting the threat analysis and prioritization from an economic perspective. QuantTM comprises an overarching process for data collection and aggregation and a method for business impact analysis. The performance and feasibility of the QuantTM approach are demonstrated in a real-world case study conducted in a Swiss SME to analyze the impacts of threats and economic benefits of security controls. Secondly, it is shown that employing business impact analysis is feasible and that the supporting prototype exhibits great usability.

Motivated by its link with functor homology, we study the prop freely generated by the operadic suspension of the operad Com. We exhibit a particular family of generators, for which the composition and the symmetric group actions admit simple descriptions. We highlight associated subcategories of its Karoubi envelope which allows us to compute extensions groups between simple functors from free groups. We construct a particular prop structure on partitions whose composition corresponds to the Yoneda product of extensions between exterior power functors.

Modern computationally-intensive applications often operate under time constraints, necessitating acceleration methods and distribution of computational workloads across multiple entities. However, the outcome is either achieved within the desired timeline or not, and in the latter case, valuable resources are wasted. In this paper, we introduce solutions for layered-resolution computation. These solutions allow lower-resolution results to be obtained at an earlier stage than the final result. This innovation notably enhances the deadline-based systems, as if a computational job is terminated due to time constraints, an approximate version of the final result can still be generated. Moreover, in certain operational regimes, a high-resolution result might be unnecessary, because the low-resolution result may already deviate significantly from the decision threshold, for example in AI-based decision-making systems. Therefore, operators can decide whether higher resolution is needed or not based on intermediate results, enabling computations with adaptive resolution. We present our framework for two critical and computationally demanding jobs: distributed matrix multiplication (linear) and model inference in machine learning (nonlinear). Our theoretical and empirical results demonstrate that the execution delay for the first resolution is significantly shorter than that for the final resolution, while maintaining overall complexity comparable to the conventional one-shot approach. We present a framework that can exploit the tradeoff between the undetected error rate (UER) and block error rate (BLER) of polar-like codes. It is compatible with all successive cancellation (SC)-based decoding methods and relies on a novel approximation that we call codebook probability. This approximation is based on an auxiliary distribution that mimics the dynamics of decoding algorithms following an SC decoding schedule. Simulation results demonstrates that, in the case of SC list (SCL) decoding, the proposed framework outperforms the state-of-art approximations from Forney's generalized decoding rule for polar-like codes with dynamic frozen bits. In addition, dynamic Reed-Muller (RM) codes using the proposed generalized decoding significantly outperform CRC-concatenated polar codes decoded using SCL in both BLER and UER. With the exponential growth in data volume and the emergence of data-intensive applications, particularly in the field of machine learning, concerns related to resource utilization, privacy, and fairness have become paramount. This paper focuses on the textual domain of data and addresses challenges regarding encoding sentences to their optimized representations through the lens of information-theory. In particular, we use empirical estimates of mutual information, using the Donsker-Varadhan definition of Kullback-Leibler divergence. Our approach leverages this estimation to train an information-theoretic sentence embedding, called TexShape, for (task-based) data compression or for filtering out sensitive information, enhancing privacy and fairness. In this study, we employ a benchmark language model for initial text representation, complemented by neural networks for information-theoretic compression and mutual information estimations. We study the influence of micromotion on the spectrum of trapped ions with a lambda-type level scheme, leading to dark resonances due to coherent population trapping. We work with calcium ions trapped in a ring-shaped Paul trap, in which one can compensate excess micromotion for only one ion of the crystal. We observe that micromotion affects the shapes of the dark resonances and causes the appearance of "echoes" separated by intervals given by the drive frequency. We present a theoretical model that provides good fits to the measurements and can be used to estimate the amplitude of the micromotion modulation of the atomic motion. We estimate an effective temperature of the ions from the spectra and observe clear micromotion heating as well as impaired cooling for sufficiently large excess micromotion., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
