2. Translation and Cross‐Cultural Adaptation of the Osteoarthritis Knowledge Scale Into Turkish.

Abstract

Background: The Osteoarthritis Knowledge Scale (OAKS) is a validated tool for assessing knowledge about hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, to date, there has been no translation and adaptation of the OAKS for the Turkish population. Objectives: To translate and cross‐culturally adapt the OAKS into Turkish and to assess its psychometric properties in the Turkish population with and without hip or knee OA. Methods: The OAKS was translated following accepted guidelines. A validation study assessed internal consistency, test–retest reliability and measurement error. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assess the factor structure. Results: A total of 278 participants (n = 70 with hip OA, n = 105 with knee OA, and n = 103 without OA) were included. Internal consistency was 0.72, 0.79 and 0.79 for participants with hip OA, knee OA, and no OA, respectively. The test–retest intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.72 (95% CI; 0.45–0.85), 0.89 (95% CI; 0.82–0.93) and 0.88 (95% CI; 0.79–0.93) for participants with hip OA, knee OA and no OA, respectively. It had three principal components accounting for 57.2% of the total variance. Conclusions: The Turkish version of the OAKS is a reliable and valid tool for measuring OA knowledge in the Turkish population, including those with and without hip and knee OA. Test–retest reliability was below acceptable levels in the population with hip OA only. Therefore, we recommend that the ICC be interpreted with caution when used in this population. Abstract

Study Design Biomechanical study. Purpose This study investigates the benefits of supplemental hook fixation (SHF) on short-segment pedicle instrumentation (SSPI) in relation to anterior strut graft positioning. In addition, it seeks to determine whether the integrity of the posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) affects the stability of the spinal construct. Overview of Literature Implant and/or bone failure with progressive kyphotic deformity after SSPI is common. To prevent this, several approaches are available, including SHF, anterior strut grafting, use of longer spinal constructs, and extension of the fusion to additional adjacent segments. Methods A total of eight calf spines were instrumented with SSPI (n=4) and SHF (n=4) with strain gauges on the implants. Strain measurements were performed under axial compression in the following order: intact spine, corpectomy, ventral positioned strut grafting, posterior positioned strut grafting, ventral positioned grafting with resected PLC, and corpectomy with resected PLC. Results The SHF group showed slightly lower strain values than SSPI in instrumented corpectomy-only specimens, but there were no statistically significant differences between them (p >0.05). The SHF group was significantly more stable than SSPI when strut grafting is employed, regardless of the location of the grafts (p =0.000). In the SSPI group, ventral positioning of the graft contributed significantly to the stability (p =0.000). There was no statistically significant difference between the ventral or posterior positioning of the graft in the SHF group (p =0.187). In addition, the integrity of the PLC did not affect stability in either group (p >0.005). Conclusions Although not statistically significant, our investigation demonstrated that the most stable method was the SHF along with ventral positioned strut graft. However, if the SSPI is the treatment of choice, ventral positioned strut graft support will be useful in minimizing the risk of implant failure and progressive kyphotic deformity.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to determine the differences and consistencies in the morphological and angular interpretations of standard USG images. Therefore, it was aimed to show the correlations of orthopaedic doctors with different periods of experience in hip ultrasound measurements taken with the Graf method. Materials and methods The study included 210 infants randomly selected from those who presented at our hospital for DDH screening. A total of 6 ultrasound images were taken for each hip. These images were evaluated by two paediatric orthopaedic professors, two orthopaedic specialists and two orthopaedic residents. The correlations of these measurements between all the doctors were evaluated statistically. Results In beta angle evaluation, agreement between all the evaluators was at the level of 0.054. No agreement was seen between the two residents or between the two specialists (p = 0.003, p = 0.998, p = 0.998, respectively). Abstract

Background: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules is an easy and cost-effective method. The increase in malignancy rates of the excised nodules due to the high sensitivity and specificity rates of the FNAC is remarkable. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of FNAC in the evaluation of thyroid nodules by comparing the results with histopathologic evaluation and comparing the consistency of the results with the literature. Materials and Methods: In this study, 1607 FNACs of 1333 patients which were classified according to the Bethesda system and 126 histopathological evaluations obtained from this group were evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 51.24 (range: 17-89, 17% male and 83% female). The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy rates were evaluated. Results: The sensitivity was 87.1% and specificity was 64.6%. The positive and negative predictive value and accuracy rates were 76.1%, 79.5%, and 77.3%, respectively. Conclusions: In our study, the evaluation of thyroid FNAC samples with Bethesda system highly correlated with the results of histopathological diagnosis. However, combination of additional and advanced diagnostic methods such as immunocytochemical studies and molecular pathology techniques enhance the prognostic value of FNAC in patients with atypia of undetermined significance or follicular lesion of undetermined significance, lesions suspicious for malignancy, and suspected follicular neoplasm.

Abstract

To date, we could find no study concerning the relationship between mechanoreceptors in the joint capsule of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and hallux valgus deformity. We aimed to investigate the presence of mechanoreceptors in samples obtained from the first metatarsophalangeal joint capsules of patients with hallux valgus deformity to improve our understanding of the clinical and histopathological features of the disease. Samples were taken from the first metatarsophalangeal joint capsules of 13 fresh-frozen cadavers with normal anatomy (controls) and 29 patients undergoing surgery for hallux valgus (cases). For light microscopy, excised specimens were fixed in 10% formaldehyde and processed for routine histopathological investigation. All samples were dehydrated in a series of ethanol, cleared in xylene, and embedded in paraffin. Orientation of collagen fibers was determined on Masson's trichrome-stained sections, and mechanoreceptors were evaluated on S-100-immunostained sections. In the sections stained with Masson's trichrome, the orientation of collagen fibers was regular in the control group. However, coarse and disoriented collagen bundles were observed in the hallux valgus cases (P ≤ .05). S-100 immunostaining was positive in the sections of both the cases and controls. Finally, free nerve endings were more abundant in the samples obtained from the capsules of hallux valgus cases than from the control group (P ≤ .05). An increase in the number of free nerve endings within the capsules of the first metatarsophalangeal joints in feet with hallux valgus deformity might have a role in the development of clinically relevant joint pain and instability.

Abstract

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The aim of the present study was to determine the potential effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TGFB1 and IL-6 on the development and severity of the disease in patients with DDH and investigate the relationship of these two gene polymorphisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS This case control study was conducted on 105 patients diagnosed with DDH and 119 healthy control subjects of any age. The DDH patients were classified according to the Hartofilakidis and IHDI classifications for adult and pediatric patients, respectively. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood samples using the Salting-out method. TGFB1 gene p.Pro10Leu (c.29CT) (rs1800470) and IL-6 572GC (rs1800796) polymorphisms were analyzed using Sanger DNA sequencing. RESULTS There was no statistically significant relationship of TGFB1 and IL-6 SNPs for DDH. When the rs1800470 and rs1800796 polymorphisms were compared according to family history, the homozygous mutation rate of TGFB1 gene was found to be significantly higher in patients with a positive family history than in patients with a negative family history. No significant relationship was found between rs1800796 polymorphisms and family history. TGFB1 homozygous mutation rate was determined to be statistically higher in the positive family history group than control group. No similar relationship was found between the negative family history group and the control group. No statistically significant relationship was determined between rs1800470 and rs1800796 and the severity of DDH. CONCLUSIONS rs1800796 and rs1800470 polymorphisms do not appear to be major responsible genetic factors for DDH. However, the determination of a correlation between a positive family history and homozygous mutation rate of the TGFB1 gene indicates that this gene may have a greater effect on DDH development. It is well-known that many individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) progress to dementia.2 However, we do not exactly know which risk factors increase this risk and to what extent. Hypertension is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. However, the findings of this study make us consider hypotension as a new risk factor for dementia. Furthermore, a recently published 6-year prospective general population cohort study suggested that not only orthostatic hypotension (OH), but also symptoms of OH seemed to be risk factors for cognitive decline.3 Notably, in the study by Elmstahl et al3, hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) were more common in subjects with dementia. We would like to make some comments on this well-designed study.

Abstract

New acceptor‐type graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) offer candidates of cathode materials for dual‐ion batteries (DIBs), where superhalides represent the emerging anion charge carriers for such batteries. Here, the reversible insertion of [LiCl2]− into graphite from an aqueous deep eutectic solvent electrolyte of 20 m LiCl + 20 m choline chloride is reported. [LiCl2]− is the primary anion species in this electrolyte as revealed by the femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy results, particularly through the rarely observed H–O–H bending mode. The insertion of Li–Cl anionic species is suggested by 7Li magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance results that describe a unique chemical environment of Li+ ions with electron donors around. 2H nuclear magnetic resonance results suggest that water molecules are co‐inserted into graphite. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the anionic insertion of hydrated [LiCl2]− takes place at a lower potential, being more favorable. X‐ray diffraction and the Raman results show that the insertion of [LiCl2]− creates turbostratic structure in graphite instead of forming long‐range ordered GICs. The storage of [LiCl2]− in graphite as a cathode for DIBs offers a capacity of 114 mAh g−1 that is stable over 440 cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
