Infrared absorption spectroscopy study of endohedral water molecule in a solid mixture of H$_2$O@C$_{60}$ and C$_{60}$ was carried out at liquid helium temperature. From the evolution of the spectra during the ortho-para conversion process, the spectral lines were identified as para- and ortho-water transitions. Eight vibrational transitions with rotational side peaks were observed in the mid-infrared: $\omega_1$, $\omega_2$, $\omega_3$, $2\omega_1$, $2\omega_2$, $\omega_1 +\omega_3$, $\omega_2 +\omega_3$, and $2\omega_2+\omega_3$. The vibrational frequencies $\omega_2$ and 2$\omega_2$ are lower by 1.6\% and the rest by 2.4\%, as compared to free \water/. A model consisting of a rovibrational Hamiltonian with the dipole and quadrupole moments of water interacting with the crystal field was used to fit the infrared absorption spectra. The electric quadrupole interaction with the crystal field lifts the degeneracy of the rotational levels. The finite amplitudes of the pure $v_1$ and $v_2$ vibrational transitions are consistent with the interaction of the water molecule dipole moment with a lattice-induced electric field. The permanent dipole moment of encapsulated \water/ is found to be $0.5\pm 0.1$ D as determined from the far-infrared rotational line intensities. The translational mode of the quantized center of mass motion of \water/ in the molecular cage of C$_{60}$ was observed at 110cm$^{-1}$ (13.6meV).

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34GHz to 448GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89-224GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166-448GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100mK. LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 micro K-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5 deg. at 100GHz. LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite CMB polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA's H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34GHz and 448GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy's foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5Kelvin for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun-Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for three years. An international collaboration between Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. There is a great interest in the scientific community to perform calorimetry on samples having mass in the nanogram range. A detailed knowledge of the energy (heat) exchange in the fast growing family of micro- and nano-systems could provide valuable information about the chemistry and physics at the nano-scale. The possibility to have an atomically flat thermal probe represents an added value, because it provides the unique opportunity to perform Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) together with calorimetry. Here we report the fabrication, characterization, and calibration of atomically flat, single-crystalline gold film thermometers on mica substrate. Gold re-crystallization has been obtained, and successively the thermometer surface has been studied by Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). The thermometer calibration demonstrates a heat exchange coefficient of 2.1 x 10^(-7) W/K and a performance about 10 times better than previous sensors based on Si substrates. The experimental setup allows the simultaneous investigation of heat exchange and surface physics on the same sample.

We report on the heterogeneous nucleation of catalyst-free InAs nanowires on Si (111) substrates by chemical beam epitaxy. We show that nanowire nucleation is enhanced by sputtering the silicon substrate with energetic particles. We argue that particle bombardment introduces lattice defects on the silicon surface that serve as preferential nucleation sites. The formation of these nucleation sites can be controlled by the sputtering parameters, allowing the control of nanowire density in a wide range. Nanowire nucleation is accompanied by unwanted parasitic islands, but by careful choice of annealing and growth temperature allows to strongly reduce the relative density of these islands and to realize samples with high nanowire yield.

We have observed the quantum Hall effect (QHE) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in highly disordered graphene at magnetic fields up to 65 T. Disorder was introduced by hydrogenation of graphene up to a ratio H/C $\approx 0.1\%$. The analysis of SdH oscillations and QHE indicates that the topological part of the Berry phase, proportional to the pseudo-spin winding number, is robust against introduction of disorder by hydrogenation in large scale graphene.

We have measured the internal proper motions of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers associated with Cepheus A (Cep A) HW2 using Very Long Baseline Interferometery (VLBI) observations. We conducted three epochs of VLBI monitoring observations of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers in Cep A-HW2 with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) over the period between 2006-2008. In 2006, we were able to use phase-referencing to measure the absolute coordinates of the maser emission with an accuracy of a few milliarcseconds. We compared the maser distribution with other molecular line observations that trace the rotating disk. We measured the internal proper motions for 29 methanol maser spots, of which 19 were identified at all three epochs and the remaining ten at only two epochs. The magnitude of proper motions ranged from 0.2 to 7.4 km/s, with an average of 3.1 km/s. Although there are large uncertainties in the observed internal proper motions of the methanol maser spots in Cep A, they are well fitted by a disk that includes both rotation and infall velocity components. The derived rotation and infall velocities at the disk radius of 680 au are 0.5 +- 0.7 and 1.8 +- 0.7 km/s, respectively. Assuming that the modeled disk motion accurately represents the accretion disk around the Cep A-HW2 high-mass YSO, we estimated the mass infall rate to be 3 x 10^{-4} n_8 Msun/yr (n_8 is the gas volume density in units of 10^{8} cm^{-3}). The combination of the estimated mass infall rate and the magnitude of the fitted infall velocity suggests that Cep A-HW2 is at an evolutionary phase of active gas accretion from the disk onto the central high-mass YSO. The infall momentum rate is estimated to be 5 x 10^{-4} n_8 Msun/yr km/s, which is larger than the estimated stellar radiation pressure of the HW2 object, supporting the hypothesis that this object is in an active gas accretion phase., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Hydrogen is one of the few molecules which has been incarcerated in the molecular cage of C$_{60}$ and forms endohedral supramolecular complex H$_2$@C$_{60}$. In this confinement hydrogen acquires new properties. Its translational motion becomes quantized and is correlated with its rotations. We applied infrared spectroscopy to study the dynamics of hydrogen isotopologs H$_2$, D$_2$ and HD incarcerated in C$_{60}$. The translational and rotational modes appear as side bands to the hydrogen vibrational mode in the mid infrared part of the absorption spectrum. Because of the large mass difference of hydrogen and C$_{60}$ and the high symmetry of C$_{60}$ the problem is identical to a problem of a vibrating rotor moving in a three-dimensional spherical potential. The translational motion within the C$_{60}$ cavity breaks the inversion symmetry and induces optical activity of H$_2$. We derive potential, rotational, vibrational and dipole moment parameters from the analysis of the infrared absorption spectra. Our results were used to derive the parameters of a pairwise additive five-dimensional potential energy surface for H$_2$@C$_{60}$. The same parameters were used to predict H$_2$ energies inside C$_{70}$[Xu et al., J. Chem. Phys., {\bf 130}, 224306 (2009)]. We compare the noise in interferometric measurements of the Vela pulsar from ground- and space-based antennas with theoretical predictions. The noise depends on both the flux density and the interferometric phase of the source. Because the Vela pulsar is bright and scintillating, these comparisons extend into both the low and high signal-to-noise regimes. Furthermore, our diversity of baselines explores the full range of variation in interferometric phase. We find excellent agreement between theoretical expectations and our estimates of noise among samples within the characteristic scintillation scales. Namely, the noise is drawn from an elliptical Gaussian distribution in the complex plane, centered on the signal. The major axis, aligned with the signal phase, varies quadratically with the signal, while the minor axis, at quadrature, varies with the same linear coefficients. For weak signal, the noise approaches a circular Gaussian distribution. Both the variance and covariance of the noise are also affected by artifacts of digitization and correlation. In particular, we show that gating introduces correlations between nearby spectral channels.

We present measurements of the linear diameter of the emission region of the Vela pulsar at observing wavelength lambda=18 cm. We infer the diameter as a function of pulse phase from the distribution of visibility on the Mopra-Tidbinbilla baseline. As we demonstrate, in the presence of strong scintillation, finite size of the emission region produces a characteristic W-shaped signature in the projection of the visibility distribution onto the real axis. This modification involves heightened probability density near the mean amplitude, decreased probability to either side, and a return to the zero-size distribution beyond. We observe this signature with high statistical significance, as compared with the best-fitting zero-size model, in many regions of pulse phase. We find that the equivalent full width at half maximum of the pulsar's emission region decreases from more than 400 km early in the pulse to near zero at the peak of the pulse, and then increases again to approximately 800 km near the trailing edge. We discuss possible systematic effects, and compare our work with previous results.

Using in situ low-energy electron microscopy and density functional theory, we studied the growth structure and work function of bilayer graphene on Pd(111). Low-energy electron diffraction analysis established that the two graphene layers have multiple rotational orientations relative to each other and the substrate plane. We observed heterogeneous nucleation and simultaneous growth of multiple, faceted layers prior to the completion of second layer. We propose that the facetted shapes are due to the zigzag-terminated edges bounding graphene layers growing under the larger overlying layers. We also found that the work functions of bilayer graphene domains are higher than those of monolayer graphene, and depend sensitively on the orientations of both layers with respect to the substrate. Based on first-principles simulations, we attribute this behavior to oppositely oriented electrostatic dipoles at the graphene/Pd and graphene/graphene interfaces, whose strengths depend on the orientations of the two graphene layers., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We report the observation of quantized translational and rotational motion of molecular hydrogen inside the cages of C60. Narrow infrared absorption lines at the temperature of 6K correspond to vibrational excitations in combination with translational and rotational excitations and show well resolved splittings due to the coupling between translational and rotational modes of the endohedral H2 molecule. A theoretical model shows that H2 inside C60 is a three-dimensional quantum rotor moving in a nearly spherical potential. The theory provides both the frequencies and the intensities of the observed infrared transitions. In February 1997, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) mission. Approximately twenty-five percent of the mission time was dedicated to the VSOP Survey of bright compact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at 5 GHz. This paper, the fifth in the series, presents images and models for the remaining 140 sources not included in Paper III, which contained 102 sources. For most sources, the plots of the uv-coverage, the visibility amplitude versus uv-distance, and the high resolution image are presented. Model fit parameters to the major radio components are determined, and the brightness temperature of the core component for each source is calculated. We present the results of the multi-frequency observations of radio outburst of the microquasar Cyg X-3 in February and March 2006 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, and the Yamaguchi 32-m telescope. Since the prediction of a flare by RATAN-600, the source has been monitored from Jan 27 (UT) with these radio telescopes. At the eighteenth day after the quench of the activity, successive flares exceeding 1 Jy were observed successfully. The time scale of the variability in the active phase is presumably shorter in higher frequency bands. We also present the result of a follow-up VLBI observation at 8.4 GHz with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) 2.6 days after the first rise. The VLBI image exhibits a single core with a size of <8 mas (80 AU). The observed image was almost stable, although the core showed rapid variation in flux density. We present the results of six-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 3C~66A. The high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) maps obtained at multi-frequency (2.3, 8.4, and 22.2 GHz) simultaneously enabled us to identify the brightest compact component with the core. We find that the spectrum of the core can be reasonably fitted by the synchrotron self-absorption model. Our VLBA maps show that the jet of 3C~66A has two bendings at about 1.2 and 4 mas from the core. We also give possible identifications of our jet components with the components in previous VLBA observations by analysing their proper motions. In February 1997 the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-borne element for the VSOP mission. HALCA provided linear baselines three-times greater than that of ground arrays, thus providing higher resolution and higher AGN brightness temperature measurements and limits. Twenty-five percent of the scientific time of the mission was devoted to the ``VSOP survey'' of bright, compact, extra-galactic radio sources at 5 GHz. A complete list of 294 survey targets were selected from pre-launch surveys, 91% of which were observed during the satellite's lifetime. The major goals of the VSOP Survey are statistical in nature: to determine the brightness temperature and approximate structure, to provide a source list for use with future space VLBI missions, and to compare radio properties with other data throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. All the data collected have now been analysed and is being prepared for the final image Survey paper. In these papers we present details of the mission, images of the sources, and some statistics of the contributions and completeness plus some statistics of the images and brightness temperatures. We report the first high-field x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron x-rays and pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 30 T. Lattice deformation due to a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4 is studied. It has been found that the Bragg reflection profile at 32 K changes significantly at around 27 T due to the structural transition. In the vicinity of the transition field the low-field and the high-field phases are observed simultaneously as the two distinct Bragg reflection peaks: This is a direct evidence of the fact that the field-induced valence state transition is the first order phase transition. A second generation near-term space VLBI mission, VSOP-2, is being planned for a launch in 2010 or soon after. The scientific objectives are very high angular resolution imaging of astrophysically exotic regions, including the cores, jets, and accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN), water maser emissions, micro-quasars, coronae of young stellar objects, etc. A highest angular resolution of about 40 microarcseconds is achieved in the 43 GHz band. Engineering developments are in progress for the deployable antenna, antenna pointing, high data rate transmission, cryogenic receivers, accurate orbit determination, etc., to realize this mission. As presented by Hirabayashi et al. (2004) these proceedings, the VSOP-2 mission is currently being planned. Various kinds of developments are being made for the misson, and here we introduce the large antenna, fast switching scheme using CMG, low noise receivers, gigabit data transmission, and high data rate sampling on-board. We are also studying the system configuration of the VSOP-2 satellite and the orbit appropriate for the expected launch vehicle, the M-V rocket. VSOP-2 science goals include imaging the accretion disks around the massive blackholes in the nuclei of the active galaxies, studies of magnetic field orientation and evolution in jets, and the highest resolution studies of spectral line masers and mega-masers. The VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Programme) mission is a Japanese-led project to study radio sources with sub-milliarcsec angular resolution, using an orbiting 8-m telescope on board the satellite HALCA with a global earth-based array of telescopes. A major program is the 5 GHz VSOP Survey Program, which we supplement here with VLBA observations to produce a complete and flux-density limited sample. Using statistical methods of analysis of the observed visibility amplitude versus projected (u,v) spacing, we have determined the angular size and brightness temperature distribution of bright AGN radio cores. On average, the cores have a diameter (full-width, half-power) of 0.20 mas which contains about 20% of the total source emission, and (14+/-6)% of the cores are <0.04 mas in size. About (20+/-5)% of the radio cores have a source frame brightness temperature 10^{13}K, and (3+/-2)% have 10^{14}K. A model of the high brightness temperature tail suggests that the radio cores have a brightness temperatures approx 10^{12}K, and are beamed toward the observer with an average bulk motion of v/c=0.993 +/- 0.004., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 1 table Accepted ApJ

The VSOP mission is a Japanese-led project to study radio sources with sub-milliarcsec resolution using an orbiting 8 m telescope, HALCA, along with global arrays of Earth-based telescopes. Approximately 25% of the observing time is devoted to a survey of compact AGN which are stronger than 1 Jy at 5 GHz-the VSOP AGN Survey. This paper, the third in the series, presents the results from the analysis of the first 102 Survey sources. We present high resolution images and plots of visibility amplitude versus projected baseline length. In addition, model-fit parameters to the primary radio components are listed, and from these the angular size and brightness temperature for the radio cores are calculated. For those sources for which we were able to determine the source frame core brightness temperature, a significant fraction (53 out of 98) have a source frame core brightness temperature in excess of 10^12 K. The maximum source frame core brightness temperature we observed was 1.2 X 10^13 K. Explaining a brightness temperature this high requires an extreme amount of relativistic Doppler beaming. Since the maximum brightness temperature one is able to determine using only ground-based arrays is of the order of 10^12 K, our results confirm the necessity of using space VLBI to explore the extremely high brightness temperature regime., Comment: 33 Pages, 4 Figures (included separately as jpg files). The VSOP mission is a Japanese-led project to study radio sources with sub-milliarcsecond angular resolution using an orbiting 8-m telescope, HALCA and global arrays of Earth-based telescopes. Approximately 25% of the observing time has been devoted to a survey of compact AGN at 5 GHz which are stronger than 1 Jy -- the VSOP AGN Survey. This paper, the second in a series, describes the data calibration, source detection, self-calibration, imaging and modeling, and gives examples illustrating the problems specific to space VLBI. Given the scientific goals of VSOP-2, including the possibility of observations of the shadows of black holes, we have investigated the fidelity of the recovered images given a typical uv-coverage. We investigate carbon isotope effects on the infrared bands of a laboratory analogue of carbonaceous dust, the quenched carbonaceous composite (QCC), synthesized from a plasma gas of methane with various 12C/13C ratios. Peak shifts to longer wavelengths due to the substitution of 12C by 13C are clearly observed in several absorption bands. The shifts are almost linearly proportional to the 13C fraction. New features associated with 13C are not seen, indicating that the infrared bands in the QCC are not very localized vibration modes but come from vibrations associated with rather large carbon structures. An appreciable peak shift is detected in the 6.2 micron band, which is attributed to a carbon-carbon vibration. A peak shift in an out-of-plane bending mode of aromatic C--H at 11.4 micron is also observed, while only a small shift is detected in the 3.3 micron band, which arises from a C--H stretching mode. The present experiment suggests that peak shifts in the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands, particularly in the 6.2 micron band, should be detectable in celestial objects with low 12C/13C ratios (< 10). The isotopic shifts seen in the QCC are discussed in relation to the variations in the UIR band peaks observed in post-asymptotic giant branch stars and planetary nebulae. The observed peak shift pattern of the UIR bands is qualitatively in agreement with the isotopic shifts in the QCC except for the 7.7 micron band complex although the observed shifts in the UIR bands are larger than those inferred from derived isotope ratios for individual objects. Supermassive black hole binaries may exist in the centers of active galactic nuclei like quasars and radio galaxies and mergers between galaxies may result in the formation of supermassive binaries during the course of galactic evolution. Using the very-long-baseline interferometer, we imaged the radio galaxy 3C 66B at radio frequencies and found that the unresolved radio core of 3C 66B shows well-defined elliptical motions with a period of 1.05 +/- 0.03 years, which provides a direct detection of a supermassive black hole binary., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in the Science

We describe measurements of the size of the Vela pulsar via scintillation, using both fits to the distribution of intensity and measurements of the modulation index. We briefly discuss systematic effects other than source size that can affect the distribution, including gain variations, self-noise, scintillation shot noise, and correlator saturation. Modulation index, a single number, can be biased by all of these, whereas the distribution of intensity is affected in different ways by different effects, providing means of distinguishing among them. Self-noise and gain variations are likely more important at long observing wavelengths, and correlator saturation and scintillation shot noise at short wavelengths. We find a size of about 500 km at decimeter wavelengths. Interestingly, this agrees with measurements of modulation index by Roberts & Ables at the same wavelength. Their results (and more recently that reported by Macquart et al.) suggest that size decreases with increasing wavelength. Although consistent with the observations, this conclusion is perhaps surprising from the standpoint of the traditional radius-to-frequency mapping.
