Abstract

The renaissance of neural architecture search (NAS) has seen classical methods such as genetic algorithms (GA) and genetic programming (GP) being exploited for convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures. While recent work have achieved promising performance on visual perception tasks, the direct encoding scheme of both GA and GP has functional complexity deficiency and does not scale well on large architectures like CNN. To address this, we present a new generative encoding scheme -- $symbolic\ linear\ generative\ encoding$ (SLGE) -- simple, yet powerful scheme which embeds local graph transformations in chromosomes of linear fixed-length string to develop CNN architectures of variant shapes and sizes via evolutionary process of gene expression programming. In experiments, the effectiveness of SLGE is shown in discovering architectures that improve the performance of the state-of-the-art handcrafted CNN architectures on CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 image classification tasks; and achieves a competitive classification error rate with the existing NAS methods using less GPU resources., Comment: Accepted at IEEE SSCI 2020 (7 pages, 3 figures)

Abstract

A novel and efficient method for the synthesis of sulfenamides with an S−N bond, which have attracted attention as industrial reagents and biologically active substances, is described herein. The reactions of benzoazole‐2‐thiones with various primary or secondary amines in the presence of triphenylbismuth dichloride at 60 °C in DMSO under aerobic conditions afforded the corresponding sulfenamides in moderate‐to‐excellent yields. This reaction is the first example of an efficient S−N bond formation reaction utilizing a low‐toxicity pentavalent organobismuth reagent under mild reaction conditions. The reaction will likely be applied to develop bioactive compounds with medicinal value or compounds with industrial utility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Adoption of Emergency Action Plans in Secondary Schools: A Study of School Nurses' Knowledge and Behavior

Abstract

Background: The adoption of an emergency action plan for athletics (AEAP) minimizes the consequences of injuries. School nurses may play an important role in the adoption of an AEAP. The purpose of our study was to describe school nurse's knowledge and perceptions related to AEAP adoption. Methods: An online survey, following the Precaution-Adoption Process Model, examining respondents' readiness to act, was distributed to 1228 school nurses to evaluate their knowledge and perception of an AEAP, with N = 131 (10.6%) responding. Results: Sixty-one school nurses were unaware of AEAP adoption at their school. A lack of athletic training services at the school was associated with not adopting an AEAP. The most frequently reported barrier to adopting an AEAP related to finances. When nurses reported perceiving more barriers to adopting an AEAP, their schools were less likely to adopt one. Conclusions: A large number of nurses were unaware if their school adopted an AEAP. There is a need to improve nurses' knowledge and perceptions to promote AEAP development.

Abstract

Organotitanium compounds find application in diverse reactions, including carbon–carbon bond formation and oxidation. While titanium (IV) compounds have been used in various applications, the potential of bis(cyclopentadienyl)diaryltitanium in cross-coupling reactions remains unexplored. This study focuses on Sonogashira-type cross-coupling reactions involving terminal alkynes and organotitanium compounds. Diaryltitanocenes were synthesized using titanocene dichloride with lithium intermediates derived from aryl iodide. Under open-flask conditions, reactions of diphenyltitanocenes with ethynylbenzene in the presence of 20 mol% Pd(OAc)2 in DMF produced coupling products in a remarkable 99% yield. Various diaryltitanocenes and alkynes under standard conditions yielded corresponding cross-coupling products with moderate to good yields. Notably, the Sonogashira-type alkynylation proceeds under mild conditions, including open-flask conditions, and without the need for a base. Furthermore, this cross-coupling is atom-economical and involves the active participation of both aryl groups of the diaryltitanocene. Remarkably, this study presents the first example of a Sonogashira-type cross-coupling using titanium compounds as pseudo-halides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
