7. Acoustic emission waveform analysis from weld defects in steel ring samples

Abstract

Acoustic emission (AE) signals from weld defects, incomplete penetration (IP), slag inclusion (SI), and porosity (PR), in longitudinal seam welding of UOE steel pipes were evaluated by using an envelope analysis system and waveform analysis system. In test results, the location accuracy of the envelope and the waveform systems during the loading tests were a few 10 mm and a few mm, respectively. AE activity and intensity and waveform type could identify the welding defect types. Three types of AE spherical radiation patterns (AERPs), a monopole mode, a tensile fracture of dipole mode, and a tensile and shear mixed of dipole mode, were observed during the test. Information from cross section observation of the IP by SEM and AERP suggested that activity and intensity of AE signals from welding defects could depend on both stress concentration of the defect and brittleness of the microstructure around the defect.

Abstract

SUMMARY: The magneto rheological elastomer (MRE) is composed of silicone elastomers and ferromagnetic powders that are responsible for its ferromagnetic and viscoelastic properties. The shape and the stiffness of the MRE change depending on the magnetic field. Therefore, it is expected to be used for artificial muscle or damping material. We developed a coupled analysis method by combining the moving particle semi‐implicit/simulation (MPS) method with the finite element method (FEM) for the design of the MRE actuator. However, this method does not take into account a rigid body. Therefore, when analyzing the coil embedded in the MRE, it was difficult to calculate parameters such as the coil rotation and position. Therefore, this paper presents a numerical method for MRE actuator analysis by coupling MPS method with FEM to arrive at a calculation method for a rigid body. Abstract

The leachability of arsenic and other constituents was studied by a diphasic distribution technique. Chemical analyses were carried out using particle-induced X-ray emission spectrometry and ion chromatography for aqueous phase. Showed that these sediments contain Hg, Se, As and Pb at different levels along with other metals. A 10-20 ppm level of As (III) was released by one of these samples into aqueous solution at higher pH values.

Abstract

To elucidate the roles of the hypothalamic peptides, GH-releasing hormone (GRH) and somatostatin (SRIH), potentially responsible for altered GH dynamics in diabetes, we studied the time courses of their changes in level associated with altered GH secretion in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Diabetic mice were used at 4, 7, and 14 days after STZ injection for analyses of 1) GH secretion in vivo, 2) hypothalamic GRH and SRIH messenger RNA (mRNA) levels, 3) pituitary GH mRNA and protein contents, and 4) pituitary GH response to GRH in vitro. GH secretion was completely suppressed 7 and 14 days after STZ injection. The hypothalamic GRH mRNA level was reduced to 59.8%, 61.2%, and 48.5% of control values at 4, 7, and 14 days, respectively. In contrast, the hypothalamic SRIH mRNA level was not altered at all of these time points. Pituitary GH mRNA and protein contents were significantly reduced to 70.2% and 61.5% of those in controls, respectively, only at 14 days. Pituitary GH responses to GRH at three doses (10, 50, and 250 nM) in vitro were remarkably increased at 4, 7, and 14 days. These findings indicate that the diabetic state rapidly and primarily inhibits hypothalamic GRH gene expression without affecting SRIH. A persistent decrease in hypothalamic GRH tone has been suggested to result in inhibition of GH synthesis in the pituitary. Enhancement of GH responsiveness to GRH may be due to the up-regulation of GRH receptors in the pituitary.

Risk communication can be regarded as a measure to prevent unnecessary conflicts and to facilitate discussion between the various parties affected by mineral development. Speakers at the round-table meeting were invited to present specific cases of discussion, negotiation, conflict or co-operation at international, national and local levels. Papers are included on Ghana, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Indonesia, Alaska's Red Dog mine, Venezuela's Los Rojas, Papua New Guinea and Japan. Issues addressed include government participation, stakeholder issues, indigenous people in the mining town, experience with local authorities, mercury and particulate contamination, co-operation between large- and small-scale miners, and local government failure in a case of arsenic poisoning.
