Majorana fermions act as their own antiparticle, and they have long been thought to be confined to the realm of pure theory. However, interest in them has recently resurfaced, as it was realized through the work of Kitaev that some experimentally accessible condensed matter systems can host these exotic excitations as bound states on the boundaries of 1D chains, and that their topological and non-abelian nature holds promise for quantum computation. Unambiguously detecting the experimental signatures of Majorana bound states has turned out to be challenging, as many other phenomena lead to similar experimental behaviour. Here, we computationally study a ring comprised of two Kitaev model chains with tunnel coupling between them, where an applied magnetic field allows for Aharonov-Bohm interference in transport through the resulting ring structure. We use a non-equilibrium Green's function technique to analyse the transport properties of the ring in both the presence and absence of Majorana zero modes. Further, we show that these results are robust against weak disorder in the presence of an applied magnetic field. This computational model suggests another signature for the presence of these topologically protected bound states can be found in the magnetic field dependence of devices with loop geometries., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Gate patterning on semiconductors is routinely used to electrostatically restrict electron movement into reduced dimensions. At cryogenic temperatures, where most studies are carried out, differential thermal contraction between the patterned gate and the semiconductor often lead to an appreciable strain modulation. The impact of such modulated strain to the conductive channel buried in a semiconductor has long been recognized, but measuring its magnitude and variation is rather challenging. Here we present a way to measure that modulation in a gate-defined GaAs-based one-dimensional channel by applying resistively-detected NMR (RDNMR) with in-situ electrons coupled to quadrupole nuclei. The detected strain magnitude, deduced from the quadrupole-split resonance, varies spatially on the order of $10^{-4}$, which is consistent with the predicted variation based on an elastic strain model. We estimate the initial lateral strain $\epsilon_{xx}$ developed at the interface to be about $3.5 \times 10^{-3}$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We observe variation in the resistively-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) lineshapes in quantum Hall breakdown. The breakdown is locally occurred in a gate-defined quantum point contact (QPC) region. Of particular interest is the observation of a dispersive lineshape occured when the bulk 2D electron gas (2DEG) is set to $\nu_{\rm{b}} = 2$ and the QPC filling factor to the vicinity of $\nu_{\rm{QPC}} = 1$, strikingly resemble the dispersive lineshape observed on a 2D quantum Hall state. This previously unobserved lineshape in a QPC points to simultaneous occurrence of two hyperfine-mediated spin flip-flop processes within the QPC. Those events give rise to two different sets of nuclei polarized in the opposite direction and positioned at a separate region with different degree of electronic polarizations., Comment: Accepted as a rapid communication in PRB

We discuss the role of electron-electron and electron-phonon correlations in current flow in the Coulomb Blockade regime, focusing specifically on nontrivial signatures arising from the break-down of mean-field theory. By solving transport equations directly in Fock space, we show that electron-electron interactions manifest as gateable excitations experimentally observed in the current-voltage characteristic. While these excitations might merge into an incoherent sum that allows occasional simplifications, a clear separation of excitations into slow `traps' and fast `channels' can lead to further novelties such as negative differential resistance, hysteresis and random telegraph signals. We outline the qualitatively different physics behind charging-induced current asymmetries in molecular conductors operating in the weakly interacting self-consistent field (SCF) and the strongly interacting Coulomb Blockade (CB) regimes. A conductance asymmetry arises in SCF because of the unequal mean-field potentials that shift a closed-shell conducting level differently for positive and negative bias. A very different current asymmetry arises for CB due to the unequal number of open-shell excitation channels at opposite bias voltages. The CB regime, dominated by single charge effects, typically requires a computationally demanding many-electron or Fock space description. However, our analysis of molecular Coulomb Blockade measurements reveals that many novel signatures can be explained using a {{simpler}} orthodox model that involves an incoherent sum of Fock space excitations and {\it{hence treats the molecule as a metallic dot or an island}}. This also reduces the complexity of the Fock space description by just including various charge configurations only, thus partially underscoring the importance of electronic structure, while retaining the essence of the single charge nature of the transport process. We finally point out, however, that the inclusion of electronic structure and hence well-resolved Fock space excitations is crucial in some notable examples., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We identify experimental signatures in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of weakly contacted molecules directly arising from excitations in their many electron spectrum. The current is calculated using a multielectron master equation in the Fock space of an exact diagonalized model many-body Hamiltonian for a prototypical molecule. Using this approach, we explain several nontrivial features in frequently observed I-Vs in terms of a rich spectrum of excitations that may be hard to describe adequately with standard one-electron self-consistent field (SCF) theories., Comment: Significantly different content -- inadequacy of SCF approach described with simple model, and a whole new class of experiments showing gate modulated current steps discussed in terms of excitations in the molecular many-body space
