Search

The intertwining between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom can give rise to unusual macroscopic quantum states, including high-temperature superconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effects. Recently, a charge density wave (CDW) is observed in the kagome antiferromagnet FeGe, indicative of possible intertwining physics. An outstanding question is that whether magnetic correlation is fundamental for the spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking orders. Here, utilizing elastic and high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, we discover a charge dimerization superlattice that coexists with the 2$\times$2$\times$1 CDW in the kagome sublattice. Most interestingly, between the magnetic and CDW transition temperature, the phonon dynamical structure factor shows a giant phonon-energy hardening and a substantial phonon linewidth broadening near the charge-dimerization wavevectors, both signaling the spin-phonon coupling. Topological semimetals are a frontier of quantum materials. In multi-band electronic systems, topological band-crossings can form closed curves, known as nodal lines. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling and/or symmetry-breaking operations, topological nodal lines can break into Dirac/Weyl nodes and give rise to novel transport properties, such as the chiral anomaly and giant anomalous Hall effect. Recently the time-reversal symmetry-breaking induced Weyl fermions are observed in a kagome-metal Co3Sn2S2, triggering interests in nodal-line excitations in multiband kagome systems. Here, using first-principles calculations and symmetry based indicator theories, we find six endless nodal lines along the stacking direction of kagome layers and two nodal rings in the kagome plane in nonmagnetic Ni3 In2 S2 . The linear dipsersive electronic structure, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, induces large magnetoresistance up to 2000% at 9 T. The combination of non-trivial band topology and symmetry breaking phases gives rise to novel quantum states and phenomena such as topological superconductivity, quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion electrodynamics. Evidence of intertwined charge density wave (CDW) and superconducting order parameters has recently been observed in a novel kagome material AV3Sb5 (A=K,Rb,Cs) that features a Z2 topological invariant in the electronic structure. However, the origin of the CDW and its intricate interplay with topological state has yet to be determined. Here, using hard x-ray scattering, we demonstrate a three-dimensional (3D) CDW with 2*2*2 superstructure in (Rb,Cs)V3Sb5. Unexpectedly, we find that the CDW fails to induce acoustic phonon anomalies at the CDW wavevector but yields a novel Raman mode which quickly damps into a broad continuum below the CDW transition temperature. Our observations exclude strong electron-phonon coupling driven CDW in AV3Sb5 and point to an unconventional and electronic-driven mechanism that couples the CDW and the topological band structure.

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid epitomizes an entangled topological state, for which two flavors of fractionalized low-energy excitations are predicted: the itinerant Majorana fermion and the Z2 gauge flux. Detection of these excitations remains challenging, because of their fractional quantum numbers and non-locality. It was proposed recently that fingerprints of fractional excitations are encoded in the phonon spectra of Kitaev quantum spin liquids through a novel fractional-excitation-phonon coupling. Here, we uncover this effect in $\alpha$-RuCl3 using inelastic X-ray scattering with meV resolution. At high temperature, we discover interlaced optical phonons intercepting a transverse acoustic phonon between 3 and 7 meV. Upon decreasing temperature, the optical phonons display a large intensity enhancement near the Kitaev energy, JK~8 meV, that coincides with a giant acoustic phonon softening near the Z2 gauge flux energy scale. This fractional excitation induced phonon anomalies uncover the key ingredient of the quantum thermal Hall effect in $\alpha$-RuCl3 and demonstrates a proof-of-principle method to detect fractional excitations in topological quantum materials.

In systems with time-reversal symmetry, the orbital magnetization is zero in equilibrium. Recently, it has been proposed that the orbital magnetization can be induced by an electric current in a helical crystal structure in the same manner as that in a classical solenoid. In this paper, we extend this theory and study the current-induced orbital magnetization in a broader class of systems without inversion symmetry. First, we consider polar metals which have no inversion symmetry. We find that the current-induced orbital magnetization appears in a direction perpendicular to the electric current even without spin-orbit coupling. Using the perturbation method, we physically clarify how the current-induced orbital magnetization appears in polar metals. As an example, we calculate the current-induced orbital magnetization in SnP, and find that it might be sufficiently large for measurement. Next, we consider a two-dimensional system without inversion symmetry. We establish a method to calculate the current-induced orbital magnetization in the in-plane direction by using real-space coordinates in the thickness direction. By applying this theory to surfaces and interfaces of insulators, we find that an electric current along surfaces and interfaces induces an orbital magnetization perpendicular to the electric current., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Phys. Topological states in quantum materials are defined by non-trivial topological invariants, such as the Chern number, which are properties of their bulk wave functions. A remarkable consequence of topological wave functions is the emergence of edge modes, a phenomenon known as bulk-edge correspondence, that gives rise to quantized or chiral physical properties. While edge modes are widely presented as signatures of non-trivial topology, how bulk wave functions can manifest explicitly topological properties remains unresolved. Here, using high-resolution inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (IXS) combined with first principles calculations, we report experimental signatures of chiral wave functions in the bulk phonon spectrum of BaPtGe, which we show to host a previously undiscovered twofold degenerate quadruple Weyl node. The chirality of the degenerate phononic wave function yields a non-trivial phonon dynamical structure factor, S(Q,$\omega$), along high-symmetry directions, that is in excellent agreement with numerical and model calculations. The chiral crystal is characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and an inversion center, resulting in the inequivalent right- and left-handed structures. In the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the spin and momentum of electrons are locked in the reciprocal space with the help of the spin-orbit interaction. To reveal the spin textures of chiral crystals, here we investigate the spin and electronic structure in p-type semiconductor elemental tellurium with a chiral crystal structure by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data demonstrate that the highest valence band crossing the Fermi level has a spin component parallel to the electron momentum around the BZ corners. Significantly, we have also confirmed that the spin polarization is reversed in the crystal with the opposite chirality. The results indicate that the spin textures of the right- and left-handed chiral crystals are hedgehog-like, leading to unconventional magnetoelectric effects and nonreciprocal phenomena., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Longwave Infrared Camera (LIR) onboard Akatsuki first revealed the global structure of the thermal tides in the upper cloud layer of Venus. The data were acquired over three Venusian years, and the analysis was done over the areas from the equator to the mid-latitudes in both hemispheres and over the whole local time. Thermal tides at two vertical levels were analyzed by comparing data at two different emission angles. Dynamical wave modes consisting of tides were identified; the diurnal tide consisted mainly of Rossby-wave and gravity-wave modes, while the semidiurnal tide predominantly consisted of a gravity-wave mode. The revealed vertical structures were roughly consistent with the above wave modes, but some discrepancy remained if the waves were supposed to be monochromatic. In turn, the heating profile that excites the tidal waves can be constrained to match this discrepancy, which would greatly advance the understanding of the Venusian atmosphere., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

In the Large helical device, a change of energetic particle mode is observed as He concentration is varied in ion-ITB type experiments, having constant electron density and input heating power but with a clear increase of central ion temperature in He rich discharges. This activity consists of bursty, but damped energetic interchange modes (EICs, X Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114 p.155003 (2015)), whose occurrence rate is dramatically lower in the He-rich discharges. Mechanisms are discussed for the changes in drive and damping of the modes with He concentration. These EIC bursts consist of marked changes in the radial electric field, which is derived from the phase velocity of turbulence measured with the 2D phase contrast imaging (PCI) system. Similar bursts are detected in edge fast ion diagnostics. Ion thermal transport by gyro-Bohm scaling is recognised as a contribution to the change in ion temperature, though fast ion losses by these EIC modes may also contribute to the ion temperature dependence on He concentration, most particularly controlling the height of an "edge-pedestal" in the $T_{i}$ profile. The steady-state level of fast ions is shown to be larger in Helium rich discharges on the basis of a compact neutral particle analyser (CNPA), and the fast-ion component of the diamagnetic stored energy. These events also have an influence on turbulence and transport. The large velocity shear induced produced during these events transiently improves confinement and suppresses turbulence, and has a larger net effect when bursts are more frequent in Hydrogen discharges. This exactly offsets the increased gyro-Bohm related turbulence drive in Hydrogen which results in the same time-averaged turbulence level in Hydrogen as in Helium.

The Venusian atmosphere is in a state of superrotation where prevailing westward winds move much faster than the planet's rotation. Venus is covered with thick clouds that extend from about 45 to 70 km altitude, but thermal radiation emitted from the lower atmosphere and the surface on the planet's nightside escapes to space at narrow spectral windows of the near-infrared. The radiation can be used to estimate winds by tracking the silhouettes of clouds in the lower and middle cloud regions below about 57 km in altitude. Estimates of wind speeds have ranged from 50 to 70 m/s at low to mid-latitudes, either nearly constant across latitudes or with winds peaking at mid-latitudes. Here we report the detection of winds at low latitude exceeding 80 m/s using IR2 camera images from the Akatsuki orbiter taken during July and August 2016. The angular speed around the planetary rotation axis peaks near the equator, which we suggest is consistent with an equatorial jet, a feature that has not been observed previously in the Venusian atmosphere. The mechanism producing the jet remains unclear. Our observations reveal variability in the zonal flow in the lower and middle cloud region that may provide clues to the dynamics of Venus's atmospheric superrotation., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

We theoretically study the generic behavior of the penetration depth of the edge states in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall systems. We found that the momentum-space width of the edge-state dispersion scales with the inverse of the penetration depth. As an example of well-localized edge states, we take the Bi(111) ultrathin film. Its edge states are found to extend almost over the whole Brillouin zone. Correspondingly, the bismuth (111) 1-bilayer system is proposed to have well-localized edge states in contrast to the HgTe quantum well., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Spin Hall effect in metallic Pt is studied with first-principles relativistic band calculations. It is found that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (SHC) is as large as $\sim 2000 (\hbar/e)(\Omega {\rm cm})^{-1}$ at low temperature, and decreases down to $\sim 200 (\hbar/e)(\Omega {\rm cm})^{-1}$ at room temperature. It is due to the resonant contribution from the spin-orbit splitting of the doubly degenerated $d$-bands at high-symmetry $L$ and $X$ points near the Fermi level. By modeling these near degeneracies by effective Hamiltonian, we show that SHC has a peak near the Fermi energy and that the vertex correction due to impurity scattering vanishes. It has been known that edge states of a graphite ribbon are zero-energy, localized eigen-states. We show that next nearest-neighbor hopping process decreases the energy of the edge states at zigzag edge with respect to the Fermi energy. The energy reduction of the edge states is calculated analytically by first-order perturbation theory and numerically. It has been known theoretically that localized states exist around zigzag edges of a graphite ribbon and of a carbon nanotube, whose energy eigenvalues are located between conduction and valence bands. We found that in metallic single-walled zigzag carbon nanotubes two of the localized states become critical, and that their localization length is sensitive to the mean curvature of a tube and can be controlled by the Aharonov-Bohm flux. The curvature induced mini-gap closes by the relatively weak magnetic field. Conductance measurement in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux can give information about the curvature effect and the critical states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

An anomalous magnetic flux periodicity of the ground state is predicted in two-dimensional cylindrical surface composed of square and honeycomb lattice. The ground state and persistent currents exhibit an approximate fractional period of the flux quantum for a specific Fermi energy. The period depends on the aspect ratio of the cylinder and on the lattice structure around the axis. We study the manganese oxides from the viewpoint of the strongly correlated doped Mott insulator. The magnetic ordering and the charge transport are governed by the orbital degrees of freedom, and their dimensionality is controlled by the anisotropic transfer integrals between the $e_g$ orbitals. As x increases the magnetic structure is predicted to change as $A \to F \to A \to C \to G$ (F: ferromagnet, A: layered antiferromagnet, C: rod-type antiferromagnet, G: usual antiferromagnet), in agreement with experiments. Especially the orbital is aligned as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ in the metallic A state, which explains the quasi 2D transport and no canting of the spin observed experimentally. Next we discuss the ferromagnetic state without the orbital ordering due to the quantum fluctuation. Here the interplay between the electron repulsion U and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interation $E_{LR}$ is studied with a large d model. In addition to this strong correlation, we propose that the dynamical phase separation could explain the specific heat as well as the various anomalous physical properties, e.g., resistivity, photo-emission, etc., Comment: to be published in Materials Science & Engineering B
