9. Numerical simulation on feasibility of rain enhancement by hygroscopic seeding over kochi area, shikoku, Japan in early Summer

Abstract

To investigate the feasibility of rain enhancement by cloud seeding over the target area in early summer, the effects of salt micro-powder (MP) seeding and hygroscopit flare (HF) seeding on the initial cloud microphysical structures were investigated using a detailed bin microphysics parcel model with the background atmospheric aerosol data collected from ground-based monitoring observations carried out on the windward side of the target area and seeding aerosol data collected from the coordinated flghts of seeding helicopter and in-situ measurement aircraft.Numerical seeding experiments show that size distributions of cloud droplets are broadened and onset of the rain drop formation is fastened by MP and HF seeding although MP seeding shows more remarkable seeding effects than HF seeding. MP seeding increases the mean droplet size and decreases total number concentration of cloud droplets whereas HF seeding does vice versa. According to the relationship between the increase/decrease ratio of cloud droplet number concentration and the increase/decrease ratio of surface precipitation by hygroscopic seeding obtained in previous studies, it is shown that MP seeding has a positive seeding effect, and HF seeding has a negative effect. In the numerical seeding experiments, although a range of variation in the number concentration and hygroscopicity of background aerosol particles, the amount of seeding material applied, and the change in the physico-chemical properties of the seeding aerosols for an improvement of seeding effects were also considered, the outline of the results described above remained unchanged., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer in directly linked porphyrin-ferrocene dyads was studied by fematosecond up-conversion and pump-probe techniques. Three different variants of porphyrin-ferrocene dyads were designed and variations in these systems of the [S.sub.2]-[S.sub.1] IC rates have a large impact in determining whether the main reaction pathway of ET is from the [S.sub.2] or [S.sub.1] state.

Abstract

Cell-based assays have become increasingly important in the preclinical studies for biopharmaceutical products such as specialty peptides, which are of interest owing to their high substrate specificity. However, many of the latter are membrane impermeable and must be physically introduced into cells to evaluate their intracellular activities. We previously developed a “cell-resealing technique” that exploited the temperature-dependent pore-forming activity of the streptococcal toxin, streptolysin O (SLO), that enabled us to introduce various molecules into cells for evaluation of their intracellular activities. In this study, we report a new cell resealing method, the listeriolysin O (LLO)-mediated resealing method, to deliver mid-sized, membrane-impermeable biopharmaceuticals into cells. We found that LLO-type resealing required no exogenous cytosol to repair the injured cell membrane and allowed the specific entry of mid-sized molecules into cells. We use this method to introduce either a membrane-impermeable, small compound (8-OH-cAMP) or specialty peptide (Akt-in), and demonstrated PKA activation or Akt inhibition, respectively. Collectively, the LLO-type resealing method is a user-friendly and reproducible intracellular delivery system for mid-sized membrane-impermeable molecules into cells and for evaluating their intracellular activities.

29. Optical and microphysical properties of upper clouds measured with the Raman lidar and hydrometeor videosonde: a case study on 29 March 2004 over Tsukuba, Japan

Abstract

Optical and microphysical properties of the upper clouds at an altitude range of 5-11 km were measured over Tsukuba, Japan, on 29-30 March 2004 using a ground-based Raman lidar and a balloon-borne hydrometeor videosonde (HYVIS). The Raman lidar measured the vertical distributions of the particle extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficients, depolarization ratio, and extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) at 532 nm; further, it measured the water vapor mixing ratio. The HYVIS measured the vertical distributions of the particle size, shape, cross-sectional area, and number concentration of the cloud particles by taking microscopic images. The HYVIS measurement showed that the cloud particles were ice crystals whose shapes were columnar, bulletlike, platelike, and irregular, and 7-400 [micro]m in size. The Raman lidar measurement showed that the depolarization ratio ranged from 0% to 35% and the lidar ranged from 0.3 to 30 sr for the clouds in ice-saturated air. The comparison between the measured data and theoretical calculations of the cloud optical properties suggests that the observed variations in the depolarization ratio and lidar ratio were primarily due to the variation in the proportion of the horizontally oriented ice crystals in the clouds. The optical thickness of the cloud obtained from the lidar was about 2 times lower than that calculated from the HYVIS data, and the maximum extinction coefficient was about 5 times lower than the HYVIS data. The most probable reason for the differences is the horizontal inhomogeneities of the cloud properties between the measurements sites for the two instruments.

Abstract

Compared with other rat strains, the inbred FOK rat is extremely heat tolerant. This increased heat tolerance is due largely to the animal's enhanced saliva spreading abilities. The aims of the present study were to 1) quantify the heat tolerance capacity of FOK rats and 2) determine the regulatory mode of the enhanced salivary cooling in these animals. Various strains of rats were acutely exposed to heat. In the heat-intolerant strains, saliva spreading was insufficient and the core temperature ([T.sub.c]) rose rapidly. In contrast, FOK rats maintained an elevated [T.sub.c] plateau (39.5 [+ or -] 0.7[degrees]C) for 5-6 h over a wide range of ambient temperatures ([T.sub.a]) (37.5-42.5[degrees]C). In hot environments the FOK rats secreted copious amounts of saliva and spread it over more than the entire ventral body surface. FOK rats had a low [T.sub.c] threshold for salivation, and the salivation rate increased linearly in proportion to the [T.sub.c] deviation from the threshold. No strain difference or temperature effect was observed in the saliva secretion rate from in vitro submandibular glands perfused by sufficient doses of ACh. These results suggest that 1) the ability of FOK rats to maintain a moderate steady-state hyperthermia (39.5 [+ or -] 0.7[degrees]C) over a wide [T.sub.a] range is enabled by a lowered threshold [T.sub.c] for salivation and functional negative-feedback control of saliva secretion and 2) strain differences in ability to endure heat stress are mainly attributable to changes in the thermoregulatory control system rather than altered secretory abilities of the salivary glands. body temperature regulation; salivation; heat stress; rat model; genotypic adaptation; biodefense

Abstract

The singlet-singlet energy-transfer processes in four trimeric porphyrin arrays are analysed to explore the effective energy transfer functional unit in S1- and S2-excited states. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and femtosecond up-conversion fluorescence measurement of these porphyrin trimers revealed the very efficient S1-S1 intermolecular energy-transfer reactions.

Observations from model simulation and the Winter Icing and Storms Project (WISP) describes the mesoscale and microscale structure and the development of a shallow upslope cloud in the Colorado Front Range, where supercooled liquid water is produced. This supercooled water is formed by upslope flow over the gently rising terrain, upglide flow within a frontal transition zone and due to turbulent mixing in the boundary layer in the cloud.
