Abstract

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a spherical tumor of the lacrimal gland. The tumor was removed by the Kroenlein method. We diagnosed as a B-cell lymphoma that is unclassifiable, and intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) (intermediate DLBCL/BL) based on its immunohistopathological examination and c-MYC/IgH rearrangement. We administered six cycles of dose-adjusted-EPOCH-R (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin hydrochloride, and rituximab) therapy, and remission of the lymphoma was obtained. This study aimed at revealing the effectiveness of the salt preference question in determining the daily salt intake in primary care outpatients.Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study included 1,075 outpatients (men, n=436, 40.6%) at six primary care institutions in Japan. Primary outcomes included a salty food preference assessed by using one question and a daily salt intake, assessed using early morning second urine samples. Multivariate analyses determined the relationships between the salt intake and the two salt preference levels.Results: The mean age was 67.6±14.6 years, and 594 (55.3%) preferred salty foods. Abstract

A trifluoroacetate metal-organic deposition (TFA-MOD) derived (Y0.77Gd0.23)Ba2Cu3Oy [(Y,Gd)BCO] thin film was prepared on an annealed CeO2-buffered R-Al2O3 substrate (25 × 25 mm) for high-power high-temperature superconducting (HTS) transmit filter. The fluctuation of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and the self-field critical current density (${J}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\text{sf}}$) were small, which indicated a uniform thin film. The (Y,Gd)BCO thin film showed high ${J}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\text{sf}}$ and low surface resistance (Rs). The average ${J}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\text{sf}}$ at 77 K and Rs (21.8 GHz) at 77 K were 8.9 MA/cm2 and 2.3 mΩ, respectively. The TFA-MOD derived (Y,Gd)BCO thin film on an annealed CeO2-buffered R-Al2O3 substrate is thus a promising candidate material for high-power HTS transmit filters.

Abstract

Biological evidence that can generate a DNA profile is considered highly important evidence in sexual assault cases. As ejaculate evidence is unlikely to be found on intimate swabs after 24 hours, textile evidence is of significant importance in such cases. Fabric garments may be exposed to water, potentially to remove evidence, or due to the location of a decedent. To determine the effects of exposure to various water types, semen-stained cotton underwear was exposed to tap, swimming pool, river, and ocean water for up to two weeks. For detection of semen stains, narrow-band, fixed wavelength lighting was minimally successful, while acid phosphatase testing with an extended cut-off was highly sensitive. Spermatozoa were undetectable on fabric samples soaked in ocean water for 12 hours, and swimming pool water for one week, with no upper limit of detectability noticed for tap or river water, although a decreasing trend was noted.

Abstract

An intra and inter-laboratory study using the probabilistic genotyping (PG) software STRmix™ is reported. Two complex mixtures from the PROVEDIt set, analysed on an Applied Biosystems™ 3500 Series Genetic Analyzer, were selected. 174 participants responded. For Sample 1 (low template, in the order of 200 rfu for major contributors) five participants described the comparison as inconclusive with respect to the POI or excluded him. Where LRs were assigned, the point estimates ranging from 2 × 104 to 8 × 106. For Sample 2 (in the order of 2000 rfu for major contributors), LRs ranged from 2 × 1028 to 2 × 1029. Where LRs were calculated, the differences between participants can be attributed to (from largest to smallest impact): • varying number of contributors (NoC), • the exclusion of some loci within the interpretation, • differences in local CE data analysis methods leading to variation in the peaks present and their heights in the input files used, • and run-to-run variation due to the random sampling inherent to all MCMC-based methods. This study demonstrates a high level of repeatability and reproducibility among the participants. For those results that differed from the mode, the differences in LR were almost always minor or conservative.

49. A pilot study: The effects of repeat washing and fabric type on the detection of seminal fluid and spermatozoa

Abstract

In sexual assault cases and more specifically those involving childhood sexual abuse (CSA), victims may have had their potentially semen-stained clothing washed multiple times before a criminal investigation commences. Although it has been previously demonstrated that spermatozoa persist on cotton clothing following a single wash cycle, items of clothing washed multiple times are not routinely examined in these cases because of the assumption that the laundering process would have removed all seminal fluid and spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to examine the persistence of seminal fluid and spermatozoa on a range of fabric types including cotton, nylon, terry towel (100% cotton), polyester fleece, satin and lace which were laundered up to six times. Three techniques were used for the detection of seminal fluid and spermatozoa: an alternative light source, acid phosphatase test and microscopy. The study demonstrated that spermatozoa persisted on cotton and terry towel following six wash cycles. This data emphasises the need to recover and examine items of clothing and bedding of victims for semen, even if the item has been washed multiple times.
