17. Knowledge Systems and Value Chain Integration: The Case of Linseed Production in Ethiopia

Abstract

Purpose: This study uses data from a sample of 150 oilseed farming households from Arsi Robe, Ethiopia, to assess the impact of different knowledge bases (education, training and experience) and their interactions on linseed productivity. Methodology: A multiple regression analysis was employed to assess the combined effect of the knowledge bases, factors such as age of the household head, land size, marketing channels and geophysical factors (such as land slope) on linseed productivity. Findings: The findings reveal no differences in productivity between trained and untrained farmers. They further show that training and the interaction between training and experience positively influence productivity. Our findings, however, reveal farmer education to have an inverse yet insignificant effect on productivity. Furthermore, we found that factors such as the slope of the land and the choice of marketing channel also play an important role in influencing productivity. Practical implications: Moving away from the traditional top-down approach could be the answer to avoid a mismatch between the information given by trainers and what the farmers actually need. Theoretical implications: The study used interaction variables of knowledge bases, and attempted to demonstrate the importance of a tacit knowledge base, which is often not well documented and therefore neglected in research. Originality/value: The research demonstrates the combined effects that interactions between several knowledge bases have on the productivity of linseed farmers.

21. From the soil to the soul: Fragments of a theory of economic conflicts

Abstract

This chapter intends to strengthen the institutional and psychological dimensions of the Barcelona School’s analysis of environmental conflicts. It does so by embedding environmental conflicts into other kinds of struggles over the economy, defined as the various ways by which humans organize their sustenance. It asks: What are the key triggers behind economic conflicts? What kinds of radical ideologies emerge from them? How are they able (or not) to sustain their radical projects? I suggest that the main conflicting points of today’s neoliberal capitalism are related to its metabolism (ecological), its debts (institutional), and to the widespread alienation it is creating (psychological). I argue that these particular points of contention are giving rise to a new blend of radical ideas around ‘degrowth’ and related movements. On one hand, this is so because degrowth confronts growthism and its unparalleled levels of ecological destruction and debt. On the other hand, degrowth seeks to address the problem of alienation by reconnecting economies to the conditions for flourishing. Collective flourishing requires, among other things, to work on one’s awareness. Such ‘inner work’ is necessary in any social movement, but it has received much less attention than the ‘outer work’ of changing the immediate or the structural triggers behind conflicts. I suggest that this disregard contributes to explaining why radical movements have so rarely been successful. I conclude that subjectivity and alienation are important frontiers of research for the Barcelona School.

Abstract

This chapter links diverse values of nature as communicated through different value articulation (“valuing” and valuation) processes to decision-making and its outcomes. It reviews the underlying causes of treating impacts on nature as external to, and ignored in, decisions by current political, economic and socio-cultural actors and institutions (i.e., conventions, norms and rules), and describes how on-the-ground drivers of nature’s decline can be transformed towards recovery, focusing on land and sea use. The modalities and practice of explicit valuation of nature (preceding chapter) in support of decisions, and the decision-making processes themselves, may need to further evolve to achieve global sustainability goals, the CBD 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature and the recent Kunming Declaration of the CBD., IPBES

Abstract

The coffee crisis has coincided with the emergence of a number of voluntary regulatory systems in the global coffee chain. The present article explores the advantages and limitations of such schemes, their impact on the chain's governance, and their implications for farmers' upgrading. We conclude that participation in these systems does not ensure a better economic performance, but it may facilitate coordination between roasters[traders and some growers, which may lead to upgrading opportunities. The paper also explores some possible options for deriving rents from improved coordination along the coffee chain.
