Myocarditis is a potentially life-threatening inflammatory disease of the myocardium, often resulting from infectious and immune-mediated responses. Clinical presentation in severe cases often results in a devastating illness requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support as a result of cardiogenic shock. Although endomyocardial biopsy is still considered the gold standard for diagnosis, it often reveals nonspecific lymphocytic infiltration. Because the precise cause is usually unknown, the initial treatment typically involves immunosuppression and frequent assessment of myocardial contractility. This report presents 3 rare cases of autoimmune diseases (polymyositis, immunoglobulin G4–related disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus) that require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support as a result of fulminant myocarditis, including their follow-up periods.

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations., Comment: 53 pages, 68 figures, submitted as a Review article to EPJA

Astrocytes are considered to possess a noticeable role in brain metabolism and, as a partners in neuron–glia cooperation, to contribute to the synthesis, bioconversion, and regulation of the flux of substrates for neuronal metabolism. With the aim of investigating to what extent human astrocytes are metabolizing amino acids and by which compounds are they enriching their surroundings, we employed a metabolomics analysis of their culture media by 1H-NMR. In addition, we compared the composition of media with either 5 mM or 25 mM glucose. The quantitative analysis of culture media by 1H-NMR revealed that astrocytes readily dispose from their milieu glutamine, branched-chain amino acids, and pyruvate with significantly high rates, while they enrich the culture media with lactate, branched-chain keto acids, citrate, acetate, ketone bodies, and alanine. Hyperglycemia suppressed the capacity of astrocytes to release branched-chain 2-oxo acids, while stimulating the generation of ketone bodies. Our results highlight the active involvement of astrocytes in the metabolism of several amino acids and the regulation of key metabolic intermediates. The observed metabolic activities of astrocytes provide valuable insights into their roles in supporting neuronal function, brain metabolism, and intercellular metabolic interactions within the brain. Understanding the complex metabolic interactions between astrocytes and neurons is essential for elucidating brain homeostasis and the pathophysiology of neurological disorders. The observed metabolic activities of astrocytes provide hints about their putative metabolic roles in brain metabolism.

Despite developing new diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines, treating tuberculosis (TB) remains challenging. Monitoring inflammatory markers can contribute to more precise diagnostics of TB, identifying its active and latent forms, or monitoring its treatment success. We assessed alterations in plasma levels of 48 cytokines in 20 patients (17 males) with active pulmonary TB compared to age-matched healthy controls (n = 18). Blood samples were collected from individuals hospitalised with TB prior to commencing antibiotic therapy, after the first week, and following the third week. The majority of patients received treatment with a combination of four first-line antituberculosis drugs: rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. Plasmatic cytokine levels from patients three times and controls were analyzed using a Bio-Plex Pro Human Cytokine Screening Panel. The results showed significantly higher levels of 31 cytokines (p

Glioblastoma is a highly malignant brain tumor consisting of a heterogeneous cellular population. The transformed metabolism of glioblastoma cells supports their growth and division on the background of their milieu. One might hypothesize that the transformed metabolism of a primary glioblastoma could be well adapted to limitations in the variety and number of substrates imported into the brain parenchyma and present it their microenvironment. Additionally, the phenotypic heterogeneity of cancer cells could promote the variations among their metabolic capabilities regarding the utilization of available substrates and release of metabolic intermediates. With the aim to identify the putative metabolic footprint of different types of glioblastoma cells, we exploited the possibility for separation of polar and ionic molecules present in culture media or cell lysates by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC). The mass spectrometry (MS) was then used to identify and quantify the eluted compounds. The introduced method allows the detection and quantification of more than 150 polar and ionic metabolites in a single run, which may be present either in culture media or cell lysates and provide data for polaromic studies within metabolomics. The method was applied to analyze the culture media and cell lysates derived from two types of glioblastoma cells, T98G and U118. The analysis revealed that even both types of glioblastoma cells share several common metabolic aspects, and they also exhibit differences in their metabolic capability. This finding agrees with the hypothesis about metabolic heterogeneity of glioblastoma cells. Furthermore, the combination of both analytical methods, HILIC-MS, provides a valuable tool for metabolomic studies based on the simultaneous identification and quantification of a wide range of polar and ionic metabolites—polaromics.

Adenosine is a multifunctional nucleoside with several roles across various levels in organisms. Beyond its intracellular involvement in cellular metabolism, extracellular adenosine potently influences both physiological and pathological processes. In relation to its blood level, adenosine impacts the cardiovascular system, such as heart beat rate and vasodilation. To exploit the adenosine levels in the blood, we employed the liquid chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Immediately after collection, a blood sample mixed with acetonitrile solution that is either enriched with 13C-labeled adenosine or a newly generated mixture is transferred into the tubes containing the defined amount of 13C-labeled adenosine. The 13C-enriched isotopic adenosine is used as an internal standard, allowing for more accurate quantification of adenosine. This novel protocol for LC–MS-based estimation of adenosine delivers a rapid, highly sensitive, and reproducible means for quantitative estimation of total adenosine in blood. The method also allows for quantification of a few catabolites of adenosine, i.e., inosine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine. Our current setup did not allow for the detection or quantifying of uric acid, which is the final product of adenosine catabolism. This advancement provides an analytical tool that has the potential to enhance our understanding of adenosine’s systemic impact and pave the way for further investigations into its intricate regulatory mechanisms.

Two new asynchronous modulation techniques for molecular timing (MT) channels are proposed. One based on modulating information on the time between two consecutive releases of indistinguishable information particles, and one based on using distinguishable particles. For comparison, we consider the synchronized modulation scheme where information is encoded in the time of release and decoded from the time of arrival of particles. We show that all three modulation techniques result in a system that can be modeled as an additive noise channel, and we derive the expression for the probability density function of the noise. Next, we focus on binary communication and derive the associated optimal detection rules for each modulation. Since the noise associated with these modulations has an infinite variance, geometric power is used as a measure for the noise power, and we derive an expression for the geometric SNR (G-SNR) for each modulation scheme. Numerical evaluations indicate that for these systems the bit error rate (BER) is constant at a given G-SNR, similar to the relation between BER and SNR in additive Gaussian noise channels. We also demonstrate that the asynchronous modulation based on two distinguishable particles can achieve a BER performance close to the synchronized modulation scheme., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication at IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1609.02109

Quantitative Finance - Statistical Finance ,Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
A non-parametric method for ranking stock indices according to their mutual causal influences is presented. Under the assumption that indices reflect the underlying economy of a country, such a ranking indicates which countries exert the most economic influence in an examined subset of the global economy. The proposed method represents the indices as nodes in a directed graph, where the edges' weights are estimates of the pair-wise causal influences, quantified using the directed information functional. This method facilitates using a relatively small number of samples from each index. The indices are then ranked according to their net-flow in the estimated graph (sum of the incoming weights subtracted from the sum of outgoing weights). Daily and minute-by-minute data from nine indices (three from Asia, three from Europe and three from the US) were analyzed. The analysis of daily data indicates that the US indices are the most influential, which is consistent with intuition that the indices representing larger economies usually exert more influence. Yet, it is also shown that an index representing a small economy can strongly influence an index representing a large economy if the smaller economy is indicative of a larger phenomenon. Finally, it is shown that while inter-region interactions can be captured using daily data, intra-region interactions require more frequent samples., Comment: To be presented at Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS) 2018

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
We study diversity in one-shot communication over molecular timing channels. We consider a channel model where the transmitter simultaneously releases a large number of information particles, while the information is encoded in the time of release. The receiver decodes the information based on the random time of arrival of the information particles. The random propagation is characterized by the general class of right-sided unimodal densities. We characterize the asymptotic exponential decrease rate of the probability of error as a function of the number of released particles, and denote this quantity as the system diversity gain. Four types of detectors are considered: the maximum-likelihood (ML) detector, a linear detector, a detector that is based on the first arrival (FA) among all the transmitted particles, and a detector based on the last arrival (LA). When the density characterizing the random propagation is supported over a large interval, we show that the simple FA detector achieves a diversity gain very close to that of the ML detector. On the other hand, when the density characterizing the random propagation is supported over a small interval, we show that the simple LA detector achieves a diversity gain very close to that of the ML detector., Comment: Submitted for publication; 10 pages; 5 figures

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
This report studies data-driven estimation of the directed information (DI) measure between two{em discrete-time and continuous-amplitude} random process, based on the $k$-nearest-neighbors ($k$-NN) estimation framework. Detailed derivations of two $k$-NN estimators are provided. The two estimators differ in the metric based on which the nearest-neighbors are found. To facilitate the estimation of the DI measure, it is assumed that the observed sequences are (jointly) Markovian of order $m$. As $m$ is generally not known, a data-driven method (that is also based on the $k$-NN principle) for estimating $m$ from the observed sequences is presented. An exhaustive numerical study shows that the discussed $k$-NN estimators perform well even for relatively small number of samples (few thousands). Moreover, it is shown that the discussed estimators are capable of accurately detecting linear as well as non-linear causal interactions., Comment: Technical report

We study diversity in one-shot communication over molecular timing channels. In the considered channel model the transmitter simultaneously releases a large number of information particles, where the information is encoded in the time of release. The receiver decodes the information based on the random time of arrival of the information particles. We characterize the asymptotic exponential decrease rate of the probability of error as a function of the number of released particles. We denote this quantity as the system diversity gain, as it depends both on the number of particles transmitted as well as the receiver detection method. Three types of detectors are considered: the maximumlikelihood (ML) detector, a linear detector, and a detector that is based on the first arrival (FA) among all the transmitted particles. We show that for random propagation characterized by right-sided unimodal densities with zero mode, the FA detector is equivalent to the ML detector, and significantly outperforms the linear detector. Moreover, even for densities with positive mode, the diversity gain achieved by the FA detector is very close to that achieved by the ML detector and much higher than the gain achieved by the linear detector., Comment: To be presented at GLOBECOM 2017

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
This work studies optimal detection for communication over diffusion-based molecular timing (DBMT) channels. The transmitter simultaneously releases multiple information particles, where the information is encoded in the time of release. The receiver decodes the transmitted information based on the random time of arrival of the information particles, which is modeled as an additive noise channel. For a DBMT channel without flow, this noise follows the L\'evy distribution. Under this channel model, the maximum-likelihood (ML) detector is derived and shown to have high computational complexity. It is also shown that under ML detection, releasing multiple particles improves performance, while for any additive channel with $\alpha$-stable noise where $\alpha<1$ (such as the DBMT channel), under linear processing at the receiver, releasing multiple particles degrades performance relative to releasing a single particle. Hence, a new low-complexity detector, which is based on the first arrival (FA) among all the transmitted particles, is proposed. It is shown that for a small number of released particles, the performance of the FA detector is very close to that of the ML detector. On the other hand, error exponent analysis shows that the performance of the two detectors differ when the number of released particles is large., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. The irreducible representations of full support in the rational Cherednik category $\mathcal{O}_c(W)$ attached to a Coxeter group $W$ are in bijection with the irreducible representations of an associated Iwahori-Hecke algebra. Recent work has shown that the irreducible representations in $\mathcal{O}_c(W)$ of arbitrary given support are similarly governed by certain generalized Hecke algebras. In this paper we compute the parameters for these generalized Hecke algebras in the remaining previously unknown cases, corresponding to the parabolic subgroup $B_n \times S_k$ in $B_{n+k}$ for $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq 0$., Comment: 19 pages. v2: minor revisions. v3: minor revisions, final version, to appear in the Journal of Algebra and Its Applications

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
In this work we study the secrecy capacity of Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channels (WTCs) with a finite memory, subject to a per-symbol average power constraint on the MIMO channel input. MIMO channels with finite memory are very common in wireless communications as well as in wireline communications (e.g., in communications over power lines). To derive the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian MIMO WTC with finite memory we first construct an asymptotically-equivalent block-memoryless MIMO WTC, which is then transformed into a set of parallel, independent, memoryless MIMO WTCs in the frequency domain. The secrecy capacity of the Gaussian MIMO WTC with finite memory is obtained as the secrecy capacity of the set of parallel independent memoryless MIMO WTCs, and is expressed as a maximization over the input covariance matrices in the frequency domain. Lastly, we detail two applications of our result: First, we show that the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian scalar WTC with finite memory can be achieved by waterfilling, and obtain a closed-form expression for this secrecy capacity. Then, we use our result to characterize the secrecy capacity of narrowband powerline channels, thereby resolving one of the major open issues for this channel model., Comment: 1 figures. The paper deals with the development of the finite element method (FEM) model of piezoelectric beam elements, where the piezoelectric layers are located on the outer surfaces of the beam core, which is made of functionally graded material. The created FEM model of piezoelectric beam structure is reduced using the modal truncation method, which is one of model order reduction (MOR) method. The results obtain from reduced state-space model are compared with results obtain from finite element model. MOR state-space model is also used in the design of the linear quadratic regulator (LQR). Created reduced state-space model with feedback with the LQR controller is analysed and compared with the results from FEM model.

This work studies the impact of time- synchronization in molecular timing (MT) channels by analyzing three different modulation techniques. The first requires transmitter-receiver synchronization and is based on modulating information on the release timing of information particles. The other two are asynchronous and are based on modulating information on the relative time between two consecutive releases of information particles using indistinguishable or distinguishable particles. All modulation schemes result in a system that relate the transmitted and the received signals through an additive noise, which follows a stable distribution. As the common notion of the variance of a signal is not suitable for defining the power of stable distributed signals (due to infinite variance), we derive an expression for the geometric power of a large class of stable distributions, and then use this result to characterize the geometric signal-to-noise ratio (G-SNR) for each of the modulation techniques. In addition, for binary communication, we derive the optimal detection rules for each modulation technique. Numerical evaluations indicate that the bit error rate (BER) is constant for a given G-SNR, and the performance gain obtained by using synchronized communication is significant. Yet, it is also shown that by using two distinguishable particles per bit instead of one, the BER of the asynchronous technique can approach that of the synchronous one., Comment: Accepted at GLOBECOM'16

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
This work focuses on the minimum transmission energy required for communicating a pair of correlated Gaussian sources over a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel with noiseless and causal channel output feedback (GBCF). We study the fundamental limit on the required transmission energy for broadcasting a pair of source samples, such that each source can be reconstructed at its respective receiver to within a target distortion, when the source-channel bandwidth ratio is not restricted. We derive a lower bound and three distinct upper bounds on the minimum required energy. For the upper bounds we analyze three transmission schemes: Two schemes are based on separate source-channel coding, and apply coding over multiple samples of source pairs. The third scheme is based on joint source-channel coding obtained by extending the Ozarow-Leung (OL) transmission scheme, which applies uncoded linear transmission. Numerical simulations show that despite its simplicity, the energy-distortion tradeoff of the OL-based scheme is close to that of the better separation-based scheme, which indicates that the OL scheme is attractive for energy-efficient source transmission over GBCFs., Comment: To be presented at ISIT 2016

This work introduces capacity limits for molecular timing (MT) channels, where information is modulated in the release timing of small information particles, and decoded from the time of arrivals at the receiver. It is shown that the random time of arrival can be represented as an additive noise channel, and for the diffusion-based MT (DBMT) channel this noise is distributed according to the L\'evy distribution. Lower and upper bounds on the capacity of the DBMT channel are derived for the case where the delay associated with the propagation of the information particles in the channel is finite, namely, when the information particles dissipate after a finite time interval. For the case where a single particle is released per channel use, these bounds are shown to be tight. When the transmitter simultaneously releases a large number of particles, the detector at the receiver may not be able to precisely detect the arrival time of all the particles. Therefore, two alternative models are considered: detection based on the particle that arrives first, or detection based on the average arrival times. Tight lower and upper bounds are derived for these two models. It is shown that by controlling the maximal delay of the information particles, the capacity can increase poly-logarithmically with the number of released particles. As each particle takes a random independent path, this diversity of paths is analogous to receiver diversity and can be used to considerably increase the achievable data rates.

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
This paper presents a novel type-II hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission scheme which is based on pruned convolutional codes (CCs) and supports unequal error protection (UEP). The data to be transmitted is assumed to consist of important bits (IB) and standard bits (SB). In the proposed scheme, all the bits are first encoded using a single mother CC and transmitted over the channel. If a decoding error is detected in the IB, then retransmission of {\em only} the IB takes place using a CC, typically with a better error correction capability. Next, taking advantage of the properties of pruned CCs, the decoded IB are used to increase the decoding reliability for the SB. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed scheme offers strong protection for the IB along with improved reliability for the remaining bits compared to other UEP schemes., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Communication Letters

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
In this work, we consider linear-feedback schemes for the two-user Gaussian broadcast channel with noiseless feedback. We extend the transmission scheme of [Ozarow and Leung, 1984] by applying estimators with memory instead of the memoryless estimators used by Ozarow and Leung (OL) in their original work. A recursive formulation of the mean square errors achieved by the proposed estimators is provided, along with a proof for the existence of a fixed point. This enables characterizing the achievable rates of the extended scheme. Finally, via numerical simulations it is shown that the extended scheme can improve upon the original OL scheme in terms of achievable rates, as well as achieve a low probability of error after a finite number of channel uses., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Signal Processing Letters

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
We study the transmission of correlated sources over discrete memoryless (DM) multiple-access-relay channels (MARCs), in which both the relay and the destination have access to side information arbitrarily correlated with the sources. As the optimal transmission scheme is an open problem, in this work we propose a new joint source-channel coding scheme based on a novel combination of the correlation preserving mapping (CPM) technique with Slepian-Wolf (SW) source coding, and obtain the corresponding sufficient conditions. The proposed coding scheme is based on the decode-and-forward strategy, and utilizes CPM for encoding information simultaneously to the relay and the destination, whereas the cooperation information from the relay is encoded via SW source coding. It is shown that there are cases in which the new scheme strictly outperforms the schemes available in the literature. This is the first instance of a source-channel code that uses CPM for encoding information to two different nodes (relay and destination). In addition to sufficient conditions, we present three different sets of single-letter necessary conditions for reliable transmission of correlated sources over DM MARCs. The newly derived conditions are shown to be at least as tight as the previously known necessary conditions., Comment: Accepted to TIT

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
Reliable transmission of arbitrarily correlated sources over multiple-access relay channels (MARCs) and multiple-access broadcast relay channels (MABRCs) is considered. In MARCs, only the destination is interested in a reconstruction of the sources, while in MABRCs, both the relay and the destination want to reconstruct the sources. We allow an arbitrary correlation among the sources at the transmitters, and let both the relay and the destination have side information that are correlated with the sources. Two joint source-channel coding schemes are presented and the corresponding sets of sufficient conditions for reliable communication are derived. The proposed schemes use a combination of the correlation preserving mapping (CPM) technique with Slepian-Wolf (SW) source coding: the first scheme uses CPM for encoding information to the relay and SW source coding for encoding information to the destination; while the second scheme uses SW source coding for encoding information to the relay and CPM for encoding information to the destination., Comment: To be presented in ISIT 2012, 5 pages, 3 figures

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
This work considers reliable transmission of general correlated sources over the multiple-access relay channel (MARC) and the multiple-access broadcast relay channel (MABRC). In MARCs only the destination is interested in a reconstruction of the sources, while in MABRCs both the relay and the destination want to reconstruct the sources. We assume that both the relay and the destination have correlated side information. We find sufficient conditions for reliable communication based on operational separation, as well as necessary conditions on the achievable source-channel rate. For correlated sources transmitted over fading Gaussian MARCs and MABRCs we find conditions under which informational separation is optimal., Comment: Presented in ISWCS 2011, Aachen, Germany

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
We study reliable transmission of arbitrarily correlated sources over multiple-access relay channels (MARCs) and multiple-access broadcast relay channels (MABRCs). In MARCs only the destination is interested in reconstructing the sources, while in MABRCs both the relay and the destination want to reconstruct them. In addition to arbitrary correlation among the source signals at the users, both the relay and the destination have side information correlated with the source signals. Our objective is to determine whether a given pair of sources can be losslessly transmitted to the destination for a given number of channel symbols per source sample, defined as the source-channel rate. Sufficient conditions for reliable communication based on operational separation, as well as necessary conditions on the achievable source-channel rates are characterized. Since operational separation is generally not optimal for MARCs and MABRCs, sufficient conditions for reliable communication using joint source-channel coding schemes based on a combination of the correlation preserving mapping technique with Slepian-Wolf source coding are also derived. For correlated sources transmitted over fading Gaussian MARCs and MABRCs, we present conditions under which separation (i.e., separate and stand-alone source and channel codes) is optimal. This is the first time optimality of separation is proved for MARCs and MABRCs., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transaction on Information Theory

Czochralski-grown boron-doped silicon crystals were studied by the techniques of the low-angle mid-IR-light scattering and electron-beam-induced current. The large-scale accumulations of electrically-active impurities detected in this material were found to be different in their nature and formation mechanisms from the well-known impurity clouds in a float zone-grown silicon. A classifcation of the large-scale impurity accumulations in CZ Si:B is made and point centers constituting them are analyzed in this paper. A model of the large-scale impurity accumulations in CZ-grown Si:B is also proposed., Comment: DRIP-VI; unlikely to be available elsewhere

This paper presents the preparation phase for model of transmission tower lattice construction using ANSYS APDL environment. Beam elements are used for the model which introduce complications in the preparation phase because of the need to define the beam shape. Considering that the lattice construction of the transmission tower consists of hundreds of trusses it is obvious that some auxiliary tool is necessary for preparation of such model in ANSYS APDL. This tool was programmed in SW Wolfram Mathematica.

In the contribution, our 3D FGM Timoshenko beam finite element with 12x12 stiffness and mass matrices for doubly symmetric open and closed cross-section [1] is extended by warping torsion effect (non-uniform torsion) to 14x14 finite element matrices. A longitudinal continuous variation of effective material properties is considered by the finite element equations derivation, which can be obtained by homogenization of the spatial varying material properties in real FGM beam. Results of numerical elastostatic non-uniform torsional analysis of the FGM cantilever beam of I-cross-section are presented and the accuracy and effectiveness of the new FGM beam finite element is discussed and evaluated.

The application of first order shear beam theory in the analysis of beam structures made of functionally graded materials requires the access to homogenized stiffness quantities. These quantities depend on the cross-sectional shape and on the spatial variation of constitutive parameters. Some of these stiffness quantities can be evaluated easily by simple integration, however, the access to transverse shear stiffnesses and to stiffness quantities regarding warping torsion is typically cumbersome. In this contribution a novel approach for their evaluation is proposed, which is based on a reference beam problem. Here, we restrict ourselves to double symmetric cross-sections, however, a generalization of the proposed method to the arbitrary case is obvious. Besides that, a novel approach to cover non-uniform warping torsion is included. The proposed method is efficient, since the discretization of the cross-section suffices, and accurate as can be shown in challenging bench mark problems.

As powerful economic and cultural centers, fortified sites played an important role in early medieval society. In Central Europe, early medieval fortified site research has been an essential topic for several generations. However, gradual changes in the landscape are a threat to these cultural heritage monuments. The main task of this paper was to compare the previous results from archaeological excavations with new data acquired by geophysical methods. The presented study is based on the three methods widely used in archaeology: magnetometry, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography. New surveys provide information about the internal structure and the state of preservation of the fortifications in a non-destructive way. Comparison of the results encourages the evaluation of archaeological excavation and helps determine the suitability and effectiveness of geophysical methods in specific natural conditions.

In this paper, results of numerical simulations and measurements are presented concerning the non-uniform torsion and bending of an angled members of hollow cross-section. In numerical simulation, our linear-elastic 3D Timoshenko warping beam finite element is used, which allows consideration of non-uniform torsion. The finite element is suitable for analysis of spatial structures consisting of beams with constant open and closed cross-sections. The effect of the secondary torsional moment and of the shear forces on the deformation is included in the local finite beam element stiffness matrix. The warping part of the first derivative of the twist angle due to bimoment is considered as an additional degree of freedom at the nodes of the finite elements. Standard beam, shell and solid finite elements are also used in the comparative stress and deformation simulations. Results of the numerical experiments are discussed, compared, and evaluated. Measurements are performed for confirmation of the calculated results.

In this contribution, results of elastostatic analysis of spatial composite beam structures are presented using our new beam finite element of double symmetric cross-section made of a Functionally Graded Material (FGM). Material properties of the real beams vary continuously in the longitudinal direction while variation with respect to the transversal and lateral directions is assumed to be symmetric in a continuous or discontinuous manner. Continuously longitudinal varying spatial Winkler elastic foundations (except the torsional foundation) and the effect of axial and shear forces are considered as well. Homogenization of spatially varying material properties to effective quantities with a longitudinal variation is done by the multilayer method (MLM). For the homogenized beam finite element the local stiffness matrix is established by means of the transfer matrix method. By the conventional finite element procedure, the global element stiffness matrix and the global system of equation for the beam structure are established for calculation of the global displacement vector. The secondary variables (internal forces and moments) are then calculated by means of the transfer relations on the real beams. Further, the mechanical stress in the real beams are calculated. Finally, the numerical experiments are carried out concerning the elastic-static analysis of the single FGM beams and beam structures in order to show the possibilities of our approach.
