Abstract

We present a load balancing strategy for hybrid particle-mesh methods that is based on domain decomposition and element-local time measurement. This new strategy is compared to our previous approach, which assumes a constant weighting factor for each particle to determine the computational load. The timer-based load balancing is applied to a plasma expansion simulation. The performance of the new algorithm is compared to results presented in the past and a significant improvement in terms of computational efficiency is shown., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In the context of the validation of PICLas, a kinetic particle suite for the simulation of rarefied, non-equilibrium plasma flows, the biased hypersonic nitrogen flow around a blunted cone was simulated with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method. The setup is characterized by a complex flow with strong local gradients and thermal non-equilibrium resulting in a highly inhomogeneous computational load. Especially, the load distribution is of interest, because it allows to exploit the utilized computational resources efficiently. Different load distribution algorithms are investigated and compared within a strong scaling. This investigation of the parallel performance of PICLas is accompanied by simulation results in terms of the velocity magnitude, translational temperature and heat flux, which is compared to experimental measurements.

Abstract

We propose a novel $hp$-multilevel Monte Carlo method for the quantification of uncertainties in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, using the Discontinuous Galerkin method as deterministic solver. The multilevel approach exploits hierarchies of uniformly refined meshes while simultaneously increasing the polynomial degree of the ansatz space. It allows for a very large range of resolutions in the physical space and thus an efficient decrease of the statistical error. We prove that the overall complexity of the $hp$-multilevel Monte Carlo method to compute the mean field with prescribed accuracy is, in best-case, of quadratic order with respect to the accuracy. We also propose a novel and simple approach to estimate a lower confidence bound for the optimal number of samples per level, which helps to prevent overestimating these quantities. The method is in particular designed for application on queue-based computing systems, where it is desirable to compute a large number of samples during one iteration, without overestimating the optimal number of samples. Our theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In particular we consider a cavity flow problem from computational acoustics, demonstrating that the method is suitable to handle complex engineering problems., Comment: 26 pages

13. Two-Photon Decays of Mesons in a Relativistic Quark Model

Abstract

We present a relativistic calculation of two-photon decays for heavy and light mesons in the framework of the Salpeter equation for quark-antiquark states. The meson-photon-photon vertex is computed by reconstructing the Bethe-Salpeter vertex function and evaluating the four-dimensional Feynman diagram with off-shell quark amplitudes. The two-photon width for light and heavy quarkonia up to spin equal six are calculated with different parameter sets taken from the literature thus giving a complete overview on the mesonic two-photon physics. We find that relativistic effects including the negative energy components of the wave function are important for any two-photon width - even for heavy quarkonia - yielding a remarkable agreement with available data., Comment: 15 pages, RevTeX

Abstract

In a relativistic quark model with linear confinement and an instanton-induced interaction which solves the $\eta$-$\eta'$ puzzle, scalar mesons are found as almost pure SU(3) flavor states. This suggests a new interpretation of the scalar nonet: We propose that the recently discovered $f_0(1500)$ is not a glueball but the scalar (mainly)--octet meson for which the $K\bar{K}$ decay mode is suppressed. The mainly--singlet state is tentatively identified with the $f_0(980)$. Abstract

HLA-A*11:01 is one of the most prevalent human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), especially in East Asian and Oceanian populations. It is also highly expressed in Indigenous people who are at high risk of severe influenza disease. As CD8+ T cells can provide broadly cross-reactive immunity to distinct influenza strains and subtypes, including influenza A, B and C viruses, understanding CD8+ T cell immunity to influenza viruses across prominent HLA types is needed to rationally design a universal influenza vaccine and generate protective immunity especially for high-risk populations. As only a handful of HLA-A*11:01-restricted CD8+ T cell epitopes have been described for influenza A viruses (IAVs) and epitopes for influenza B viruses (IBVs) were still unknown, we embarked on an epitope discovery study to define a CD8+ T cell landscape for HLA-A*11:01-expressing Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian people. Using mass-spectrometry, we identified IAV- and IBV-derived peptides presented by HLA-A*11:01 during infection. 79 IAV and 57 IBV peptides were subsequently screened for immunogenicity in vitro with peripheral blood mononuclear cells from HLA-A*11:01-expressing Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian donors. CD8+ T cell immunogenicity screening revealed two immunogenic IAV epitopes (A11/PB2320-331 and A11/PB2323-331) and the first HLA-A*11:01-restricted IBV epitopes (A11/M41-49, A11/NS1186-195 and A11/NP511-520). The immunogenic IAV- and IBV-derived peptides were >90% conserved among their respective influenza viruses. Identification of novel immunogenic HLA-A*11:01-restricted CD8+ T cell epitopes has implications for understanding how CD8+ T cell immunity is generated towards IAVs and IBVs. These findings can inform the development of rationally designed, broadly cross-reactive influenza vaccines to ensure protection from severe influenza disease in HLA-A*11:01-expressing individuals.
