- Abstract
A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances Sigma(1385)(0), Lambda(1405) and Lambda(1520) as well as the production of double strange baryon systems Xi(-) and Lambda Lambda in p + p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Afterwards the expected signal count rates using a target consisting of either liquid hydrogen or polyethylene are summarized.

Results on $\Lambda$ hyperon production are reported for collisions of p(3.5 GeV) + Nb, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research, Darmstadt. The transverse mass distributions in rapidity bins are well described by Boltzmann shapes with a maximum inverse slope parameter of about $90\,$MeV at a rapidity of $y=1.0$, i.e. slightly below the center-of-mass rapidity for nucleon-nucleon collisions, $y_{cm}=1.12$. The rapidity density decreases monotonically with increasing rapidity within a rapidity window ranging from 0.3 to 1.3. The $\Lambda$ phase-space distribution is compared with results of other experiments and with predictions of two transport approaches which are available publicly. None of the present versions of the employed models is able to fully reproduce the experimental distributions, i.e. in absolute yield and in shape. Presumably, this finding results from an insufficient modelling in the transport models of the elementary processes being relevant for $\Lambda$ production, rescattering and absorption. The present high-statistics data allow for a genuine two-dimensional investigation as a function of phase space of the self-analyzing $\Lambda$ polarization in the weak decay $\Lambda\rightarrow p \pi^-$. Finite negative values of the polarization in the order of $5-20\,\%$ are observed over the entire phase space studied. The absolute value of the polarization increases almost linearly with increasing transverse momentum for $p_t>300\,$MeV/c and increases with decreasing rapidity for $y < 0.8$., Comment: accepted by Eur. We report on baryon resonance production and decay in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic energy of $3.5$ GeV based on data measured with HADES. The exclusive channels $pp \rightarrow np\pi^{+}$ and $pp \rightarrow pp\pi^{0}$ as well as $pp \rightarrow ppe^{+}e^{-}$ are studied simultaneously for the first time. The invariant masses and angular distributions of the pion-nucleon systems were studied and compared to simulations based on a resonance model ansatz assuming saturation of the pion production by an incoherent sum of baryonic resonances (R) with masses $, Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

The development of ultra-light pixelated ladders is motivated by the requirements of the ILD vertex detector at ILC. This paper summarizes three projects related to system integration. The PLUME project tackles the issue of assembling double-sided ladders. The SERWIETE project deals with a more innovative concept and consists in making single-sided unsupported ladders embedded in an extra thin plastic enveloppe. AIDA, the last project, aims at building a framework reproducing the experimental running conditions where sets of ladders could be tested. CMOS sensors are the most promising candidates for the Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) of the CBM experiment at GSI, as they provide an unprecedented compromise between spatial resolution, low material budget, adequate radiation tolerance and readout speed. To study the integration of these sensors into a detector module, a so-called MVD-demonstrator has been developed. The demonstrator and its in-beam performance will be presented and discussed in this work.

The invariant-mass spectrum of $e^+ e^-$ pairs produced in $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C collisions at an incident energy of 2 GeV per nucleon has been measured for the first time. The measured pair production probabilities span over five orders of magnitude from the $\pi^0$-Dalitz to the $\rho/\omega$ invariant-mass region. Dalitz decays of $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ account for all the yield up to 0.15 GeV/c$^2$, but for only about 50% above this mass. A comparison with model calculations shows that the excess pair yield is likely due to baryon-resonance and vector-meson decays. Transport calculations based on vacuum spectral functions fail, however, to describe the entire mass region.

The HADES spectrometer installed at GSI Darmstadt is devoted to the study of the production of di-lepton pairs from vector meson decays in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, as well as proton- and pion-induced reactions. Extraction of rare lepton pairs in high hadron multiplicity events requires an efficient particle identification (PID). In HADES charged particles momentum is measured by a tracking system surrounding the toroidal super conducting magnet, and velocity and energy loss is provided by a TOF detector. Leptons are identified by a Rich as well as a Shower detector. The particle identification method is using full experimental information from all subdetectors. To demonstrate the method performance, single particle spectra of charged hadrons and leptons from C+C at 2 AGeV will be presented and compared with results of corresponding simulations. The proton and pion yields an m_T and rapidity distributions will be compared with existing data. Very preliminary results of lepton analysis will be shown as well.

- Abstract
The goals of the National Software Works Project were to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of providing users uniform access to services on a diverse set of computers and operating systems. We have, indeed, succeeded in showing that such access is possible by building, running, and maintaining a system called NSW, which ran on the Arpanet in one form or another between 1976 and 1983. In its final version, NSW connected an IBM 370, two TOPS-20s, a MULTICS and several UNIXes. The need to interact with different computer systems is ever increasing in both military and commercial sectors. The lessons learned from the construction of NSW can help those building the next generation of these systems. This report is about those lessons we learned.

- Abstract
This technical report details the preliminary design for a new language for the description of test procedures and the preparation of test programs to drive automatic test equipment (ATE). The test language described in this report is called the COMPASS Test Language (CTL). The Abbreviated Test Language for Avionics Systems (ATLAS) is used as a basis for this new language design but the new design reflects substantive differences in design philosophy. Five major requirements for a new Test Procedure Oriented higher level language for ATE form the basis for the new design. These include the features of linguistic strength or completeness, grammatical simplicity, language extensibility, compilability and adaptability. (Author)

The CBM experiment will investigate heavy-ion collisions at beam energies from 8 to 45 AGeV at the future accelerator facility FAIR. The goal of the experiment is to study the QCD phase diagram in the vincinity of the QCD critical point. To do so, CBM aims at measuring rare probes among them open charm. In order to identify those rare and short lived particles despite the rich combinatorial background generated in heavy ion collisions, a micro vertex detector (MVD) providing an unprecedented combination of high rate capability and radiation hardness, very light material budget and excellent granularity is required. In this work, we will discuss the concept of this detector and summarize the status of the R&D.

HADES is a second generation experiment designed to study dielectron production in proton, pion and heavy ion induced reactions at the GSI accelerator facility in Darmstadt. The physics programme of HADES is focused on in-medium properties of the light vector mesons. In this contribution we discuss relevance of dielectron spectroscopy to the problem of hadron mass origin. We present status of the HADES experiment, demonstrate ists capability to identify rare dielectron signal and show first experimental results obtained from C+C reations at 2 AGeV.

- Abstract
The emission pattern of charged pions has been measured in Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon incident energy. In peripheral collisions and at target rapidities, high-energy pions are emitted preferentially towards the target spectator matter. In contrast, low-energy pions are emitted predominantly in the opposite direction. The corresponding azimuthal anisotropy is explained by the interaction of pions with projectile and target spectator matter. This interaction with the spectator matter causes an effective shadowing which varies with time during the reaction. Our observations show that high-energy pions stem from the early stage of the collision whereas low-energy pions freeze out later.

- Abstract
Study Objectives: To determine if the complications associated with skull base fractures are increased when nasotracheal intubation is performed in the field., Design: Retrospective, case-control study over a five-year period., Setting: A helicopter service returning to a Level I trauma center., Type of Participants: All injured patients treated in the field who had either radiographic or clinical evidence of skull base fractures in whom nasotracheal intubation was attempted (38) compared with all patients with skull base fractures in whom nasotracheal intubation was not attempted (48) and a convenience sample of patients without skull base fractures in whom nasotracheal intubation was attempted (45). Patients with obvious midface motion on initial examination were excluded. Complications of skull base fractures were categorized as cerebral spinal fluid leak of longer than 24 hours and/or meningitis, cranial nerve injury, diabetes insipidus, and intracranial placement of the endotracheal tube., Interventions: Blind nasotracheal intubation was performed by experienced flight nurses., Results: There were no patients in whom an endotracheal tube was placed intracranially. There was no significant difference in complication rate between the two groups with skull base fractures (with nasotracheal intubation, 24%; 95% confidence interval, 11% to 40%; without nasotracheal intubation, 25%; 95% confidence interval, 14% to 40%). The group without skull base fracture had none of the complications usually associated with skull base fractures., Conclusion: Patients with skull base fracture have a significant complication rate (25%). The complications associated with skull base fractures are not markedly increased by attempts at nasotracheal intubation in the field.
