This report presents comprehensive statistics on the organization, staff, pupils, and finances of public elementary and secondary schools in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the outlying areas of the United States. It provides detailed data for the school year 1975-76 and historical trend data for selected items of information, in some instances going back to 1869-70. The report, in addition, gives national (but not state) enrollment figures for the following types of schools: (1) elementary and secondary departments of institutions of higher education; (2) federally operated schools on federal installations; (3) federal schools for Indians; and (4) residential schools for exceptional children. Some private school data are included for regular private correspondence schools; proprietary, vocational, and trade schools; and private schools of art, music, and dancing. Table A recapitulates the types of schools (and their respective enrollments) that operate at the elementary and secondary levels. Initial tables provide a historical summary of public school statistics; and data on school administrative units and state, local, and regional education agencies. Subsequent tables provide data on a state-by-state basis on the number of school systems, the school age population, enrollment, average daily attendance, high school graduates, instructional staff, and the school lunch program. Concluding tables present data on financing public elementary and secondary school systems, including revenue and nonrevenue receipts for public schools, total expenditures, current expenditures, capital outlays, interest on school debt, status of school bonds, value of school property, average annual salary of instructional staff, and expenditures per pupil. National totals in this report represent data summations for the states constituting the United States as of the time the data apply.

For a period of more than 25 years, this series of publications has provided an authoritative and reasonably comprehensive source of information about Federal activities in education. The present bulletin, Federal Funds for Education, 1958-59 and 1959-60, is the 15th in the series. It describes educational programs supported by the Federal Government and gives tabular summaries of the Federal funds provided. Compilations of amounts for the individual States in the 1958-59 and, if available, for the 1958-60 school years are presented. Summary tables reporting program amounts over a 10-year period are also included to show trends in Federal support. The figures indicate annual amounts for the separate programs; the extent that educational activities are supported in the separate Federal departments, agencies, or offices, and the Government-wide participation in supporting education services throughout the United States. The value of this kind of information has recently been emphasized in arrangements between the National Science Foundation and the Office of Education for a further analysis of data on Federal funds for education. This bulletin is the fourteenth in this series of publications issued biennially by the Office of Education. The bulletin is prepared on the basis of responses given by Federal Departments and Agencies to requests for information about Federal expenditures for educational programs. Through this series of publications, the Office of Education has attempted to provide a central source of authoritative data on Federal activities in education. Information on Federal funds presented in this bulletin is for the latest year available, usually the 1957-58 school year. However, for some programs the Federal offices are unable to report figures beyond those for the 1956-57 school year. Details on the amounts of Federal funds allocated State-by-State and also amounts expended on programs which are national in scope are reported. In addition, summaries show the totals of annual distributions and the amounts provided over periods of as much as ten years. An index is included. (Contains 108 tables.) Federal agencies are responsible for a variety of educational activities. These vary from operating programs for which specific appropriations are made to others which provide educational services incident to some other Federal purpose. Because of the variable nature of these services having educational significance, it is difficult to secure complete reports on all financial provisions for education made by the Federal Government. Through the years, the Office of Education has gathered figures from the Federal agencies and reported them in the series of publications on "Federal Funds for Education." The present publication is the eleventh in the series. Its purpose it to present detailed information on several major Federal Government programs providing funds for education. Data have been gathered from many different federal offices, published reports of the agencies, and through correspondence with officials who are responsible for administration of Federal grants. The facts are summarized here for use by those who desire to have information about Federal assistance for education, presented as a unit. The statements about Federal aids for education are arranged and grouped in this bulletin by the Federal agencies which administer the grants.
