Training of Machine Learning (ML) models in real contexts often deals with big data sets and high-class imbalance samples where the class of interest is unrepresented (minority class). Practical solutions using classical ML models address the problem of large data sets using parallel/distributed implementations of training algorithms, approximate model-based solutions, or applying instance selection (IS) algorithms to eliminate redundant information. However, the combined problem of big and high imbalanced datasets has been less addressed. This work proposes three new methods for IS to be able to deal with large and imbalanced data sets. The proposed methods use Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) as a base clustering technique, and then three different sampling methods are applied on top of the clusters (or buckets) generated by LSH. The algorithms were developed in the Apache Spark framework, guaranteeing their scalability. The experiments carried out in three different datasets suggest that the proposed IS methods can improve the performance of a base ML model between 5% and 19% in terms of the geometric mean., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures

Background Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is a granulomatous disease that can manifest as conduction defects, ventricular arrhythmias, and heart failure. The diagnosis of CS is inherently difficult due to variable presentations; as such, endomyocardial biopsy is often required but lacks sensitivity due to patchy myocardial involvement. Moreover, the diagnostic criteria of CS and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy overlap, particularly in right-side dominant or biventricular presentations, which further complicates an already challenging differential diagnosis. Case summary A 53-year-old man with no prior chronic medical conditions presented with ventricular tachycardia (VT) and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. He was found to have biventricular cardiomyopathy and late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, resulting in an initial diagnosis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was placed, but he was readmitted for recurrent VT 2 months later. Despite an aggressive VT therapy (combination of antiarrhythmic drugs, epicardial and endocardial ablation, and stellate ganglion block), he continued with refractory VT and developed cardiogenic shock. Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation was initiated as a bridge to heart transplantation. Pathology of the explanted heart revealed the underlying disease to be CS. Discussion Cardiac sarcoidosis can mimic arrhythmogenic biventricular cardiomyopathy and may be difficult to distinguish by the proposed diagnostic criteria. High clinical suspicion and thorough investigation are necessary for an earlier diagnosis and initiation of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dynamically Adaptive Systems modify their behav- ior and structure in response to changes in their surrounding environment and according to an adaptation logic. Critical sys- tems increasingly incorporate dynamic adaptation capabilities; examples include disaster relief and space exploration systems. In this paper, we focus on mutation testing of the adaptation logic. We propose a fault model for adaptation logics that classifies faults into environmental completeness and adaptation correct- ness. Since there are several adaptation logic languages relying on the same underlying concepts, the fault model is expressed independently from specific adaptation languages. Taking benefit from model-driven engineering technology, we express these common concepts in a metamodel and define the operational semantics of mutation operators at this level. Mutation is applied on model elements and model transformations are used to propagate these changes to a given adaptation policy in the chosen formalism. Dynamically Adaptive Systems (DAS) are systems that modify their behavior and structure in response to changes in their surrounding environment. Critical mission systems increasingly incorporate adaptation and response to the environment; examples include disaster relief and space exploration systems. These systems can be decomposed in two parts: the adaptation policy that specifies how the system must react according to the environmental changes and the set of possible variants to reconfigure the system. A major challenge for testing these systems is the combinatorial explosions of variants and envi-ronment conditions to which the system must react. In this paper we focus on testing the adaption policy and propose a strategy for the selection of envi-ronmental variations that can reveal faults in the policy. Artificial Shaking Table Testing (ASTT) is a strategy inspired by shaking table testing (STT), a technique widely used in civil engineering to evaluate building's structural re-sistance to seismic events. ASTT makes use of artificial earthquakes that simu-late violent changes in the environmental conditions and stresses the system adaptation capability. We model the generation of artificial earthquakes as a search problem in which the goal is to optimize different types of envi-ronmental variations.

35. Structural and Design Values of Solid Timber Beams and Glued Laminated Timber Beams of Dipteryx panamensis and Hieronyma alchorneoides Wood from Fast-Growth Plantation

Dipteryx panamensis and Hieronyma alchorneoides are two species of high specific gravity used in reforestation programs in Costa Rica, but they lack products with structural value for commercialization. In order to introduce the wood of these two species in the market, the objective was established to study the behavior of solid timber beams and glued laminated timber beams of two cross sections (2 cm × 10 cm and 2 cm × 15 cm) and establish the design values in bending test. The results showed that the bending design values (fb) ranged from 2 to 26 MPa in glued laminated timber beams, while in solid timber beams, fb ranged from 6 to 15 MPa. In the shear design values (fv), the variation was from 0.29 to 0.67 MPa in glue laminated timber beams and from 1.80 to 2.58 MPa in solid timber beams. It was also found that the D. panamensis beams showed higher values than H. alchornoides beams. Finally, it was established that glued laminated timber beams showed better performance in bending parameters and higher design values, resulting in wider span values, than solid timber beams when used in floor and roof construction., Dipteryx panamensis i Hieronyma alchorneoides dvije su vrste drva velike specifične gustoće koje su uvrštene u program pošumljavanja u Kostarici, ali se ne iskorištavaju za strukturne proizvode kako bi se komercijalizirale. Da bi se te dvije vrste drva plasirale na tržište, istraženo je ponašanje lameliranih greda i greda od cjelovitog drva s dva različita poprečna presjeka (2 cm × 10 cm i 2 cm × 15 cm) te su ispitivanjem savijanja utvrđene projektirane vrijednosti. Rezultati su pokazali da su se projektirane vrijednosti savijanja (fb) kretale u rasponu od 2 do 26 MPa za lamelirane grede te od 6 do 15 MPa za grede od cjelovitog drva. Projektirane vrijednosti smicanja varirale su od 0,29 do 0,67 MPa za lamelirane grede te od 1,8 do 2,58 MPa za grede od cjelovitog drva. Za grede od drva D. panamensis izmjerene su veće vrijednosti ispitivanih svojstava nego za grede od drva H. alchorneoides. Konačno, utvrđeno je da su lamelirane grede pokazale bolja svojstva savijanja i veće projektirane vrijednosti od greda od cjelovitog drva, što rezultira većim vrijednostima raspona kada se rabe na podu ili krovu.

Pulsed electric fields (PEFs) have emerged as an ideal cardiac ablation modality. At present numerous clinical trials in humans are exploring PEF as an ablation strategy for both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, with early data showing significant promise. As this is a relatively new technology there is limited understanding of its principles and biophysics. Importantly, PEF biophysics and principles are starkly different to current energy modalities (radiofrequency and cryoballoon). Given the relatively novel nature of PEFs, this review aims to provide an understanding of the principles and biophysics of PEF ablation. The goal is to enhance academic research and ultimately enable optimization of ablation parameters to maximize procedure success and minimize risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
