Abstract

Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1–6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

3. Incentives for wetlands conservation in the Mufindi wetlands of the Great Ruaha River Tanzania

Abstract

Sustainable wetland management has to some extent become a high priority for world’s environmentalists. Achieving sustainable wetland management may require an increase in the voluntary adoption of best management practices by both local communities and the government. This may be preceded by more tailored suite of incentive measures which are effective in encouraging local people to adopt proper management practices. This study presents results from a study done in the Little Ruaha catchment of the Great Ruaha River Basin. Household surveys were done to assess the relevant incentives for wetlands management and how local communities perceived the incentive and incentive mechanisms for sustainable wetland management. It was revealed that not every member of the community was motivated to conserve wetland and thus the perceived wetland conservation incentives also vary greatly. Among preferred incentives were; joint management, privatization, alternativeincome generating activities and land use rights/legal land ownership. Government policies and regulations were not perceived as real incentives. This study recommends a ‘tool-box’ of incentives which will encourage a range of local people in different situations to conserve wetlands. However, the tool box of incentives and their programs should be implemented with extra cautions as it may result into perverse incentives and consequently lead into unequal benefit sharing becoming disincentives to conservation and further degradation of wetlands.Key Words: Incentives; Disincentives; Wetlands; Great Ruaha River

4. Wetland related livelihoods, institutions and incentives for conservation in the Great Ruaha River Wetland System

Abstract

Wetlands are among the world’s most productive environments and of tremendous economic benefits to society. Though wetland utilization for household agriculture and wetland resource extraction for household income generation may be the two most important factors driving wetland degradation in Tanzania the furtiveness of small decisions makes mitigation efforts exceedingly difficult. Like other families throughout the world, the decision that Tanzanian families make in regard to the use of wetland resources are strongly influenced by desire to improve their livelihoods. The importance of trade to household economies and as a determinant of wetland resources status prompts an examination of the potential for using marketbased incentives and relevant institutions to enhance household incomes while conserving wetland biodiversity. Balanced utilization of wetland ecosystems can be achieved if wetland related livelihoods, institutions and incentives for their management are well planned, in place and understood by stakeholders. This study was conducted in Malolo B and Msosa villages in the Great Ruaha River wetland system to determine the existing wetland related livelihoods, institutions and incentives for management. The major wetland based livelihoods in order of magnitude are associated with use of wetlands for agriculture, source of water for various uses, fishing, source of construction material such as for roofing, game meat, earth brick making, fodder/use of wetlands for livestock grazing. About 95% of the population in wetland adjacent communities are involved in agricultural production. The main institutions involved in wetlands management are grouped in different categories based on the roles they play in wetlands management. These include connectors, whistle blowers, enforcement, information exchange, management, education and capacity building, lobbying, entrepreneurs,following and reinforcing, leading, rule creation, funding, wrecking and caring, spiritual. The major incentives for wetlands conservation include clear clear land tenure), alternative income generating activities, joint management and stakeholder participation and privatization of wetland management.

5. The role of Bahi swamp wetlands in enhancing household food security and income of adjacent communities

Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the role of Bahi swamp resources in enhancing household food security and income of adjacent communities. Specifically, the study assessed the socioeconomic activities in the swamp with a potential contribution to local livelihoods, the contribution of the swamp in enhancing household food security and income and the level of local dependence on the swamp. Two villages (Makulu and Nagulo-Bahi) were involved. Data were collected through questionnaire, PRA techniques(resource mapping, key informant interviews and focused group discussions) and direct observation. Data were summarized and analysed using Microsoft Excel, SPSS and content analysis. Other data from discussions were analysed through relative ranking. The socioeconomic activities with potential contribution to food security and income of adjacent communities in order of importance included crop cultivation, fishing, livestock grazing and collection of thatching grasses. Cultivation of paddy rice contributed significantly to household food security generating 65.4% of total household food crop production compared to other crops grown in drier areas adjacent to the swamp. Fishing played a substantial contribution to household food security through household consumption of 10% of fish caught. For household income, sales of paddy rice from the swamp contributed 59.6% while fish sales contributed 36% of the total annual household income. Multiplier activities emerging during fishing season facilitate income to a wider group of communities. On average, 56.2% of the population depend on the swamp for daily socio-economic activities associated with generation of household food and income. The Bahi swamp and related products play a significant role in enhancing local livelihoods for the adjacent communities. Planning for wise use of the swamp in respect of the dominant socioeconomic activities will likely improve its contribution to livelihoods.Key words: Bahi swamps, food security, income, wetlands

6. Estimating direct use value of Kilombero Ramsar site based on market price method

Abstract

Kilombero Valley Flood Plain Ramsar Site (KVFPRS) with an area of 796 735 ha supports about 400 000 inhabitants. The valley is subjected to extensive expansion in direct resource based extractions threatening its ecological integrity due to limited use of valuation of ecosystem services in decision making on its sustainable management.. This study estimated the direct use value using a market price method. Sources of information were household questionnaire in which a sample of 490 households was used. Other sources of information were from literature searches, focus group discussions and visits to local markets. For each studied activity, the percentage of participating households was identified, data on what they produce, and cost of production, and net benefit, were calculated at household level and the values were aggregated across the whole population. The total aggregate value of the wetlands was TZS 152 billion. The largest contribution came from rice production (56.6%), sugarcane production (20.8%), forest products (13.2%), fishing (2.9%), livestock (2.6%), bush meat (0.5%), brick making (1%) and thatch grass (2.1%). 7. Management effectiveness and conservation initiatives in the Kilombero Valley Flood Plains Ramsar Site, Tanzania

Abstract

Management effectiveness of the Kilombero Valley Flood Plains Ramsar Site (KVFPRS) was assessed to determine the extent to which management interventions in the Ramsar site have been effective in addressing threats to the wetland resources. The assessment used the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT). This tool is composed of a set of questions that address the different steps and stages or elements of management necessary to achieve the objectives of management of the area for which it was established. We identified 16 key issues to the management of the KVFP Ramsar site out of the 30 main issues used to evaluate the management effectiveness by the WCPA tracking tool. According to managers of the Ramsar site in both Kilombero and Ulanga Districts, the management effectiveness of the KVFPRS is 39%. The %age score ranking given in this wetland reserve was low, suggesting that there has been little success in protecting the wetland. Discussions with key informants and local communities revealed that the current condition of the wetland is poor and not well managed which was attributed to poor law enforcement (34%) and inadequate implementation of planned management interventions (66%). The majority of the respondents admitted encroachment both for agriculture (28%) and settlements (14%), illegal fishing and destruction of fish breeding sites (13%), wildfire (3%), poaching (4%), deforestation (8%) and overgrazing by livestock (31%) were the major wetland degrading activities. The adjacent communities and district management suggested clear policy and regulations (31%), the need for their involvement in the management (23%), patrols (17%), and regular environmental education (10%) as ways to mitigate wetland degradation. It was also suggested that a change in the current status of the protected area into a wetland reserve and management of livestock populations would ensure proper management and conservation of the wetland resources. Several conservation interventions/initiatives have been undertaken to counter wetland degradation including the declaration of the KVFPRS as a Ramsar Site, preparation of integrated management plan for the site and establishment of game controlled areas around the Ramsar Site. Community involvement in planning and implementation of required actions and adequate monitoring of the performance of these interventions are crucial in order to establish their effectiveness and corrective measures and will likely improve management effectiveness.Key Words: Management, effectiveness, Kilombero, Ramsar Site, METT

8. Gender relations in utilization and conservation of the Kilombero flood plains Ramsar site wetlands, Tanzania

Abstract

Gender relations refer to the gender dimensions of the social relations structuring the lives of individual men and women, such as the gender division of labour and gender division of access to and control over resources. This leads to the differentiation of roles that a different gender has to play in the society. The present study was conducted in the Kilombero, Morogoro region to investigate gender relations in utilization and conservation Kilombero wetland resources. Data were collected from six villages namely Mofu, Kivukoni, Idete, Chita, Melela and Mngeta. Household interviews and transect walks were the main approached used for data collection. It was revealed that men, women, elders, and youth participated in various activities and the utilization of Kilombero wetland resources. Amongst gender categories, 78.3% of the women, 52.2% of the men, 50% elders and 47.4% youth practiced crop farming. There were more men (62.2%) utilizing the wetland for income alone than those utilizing the wetland for both income and food (37.8%). More women (41.7%) than men utilized the wetland for food alone. More men (64.4%) than women (63.9%) play an important role in conservation of wetlands through educating others on sustainable utilization of wetland resources. Elders (43.3%) were reported to participate in wetland resources conservation by advising youths on sustainable use of resources because they are aware of what is happening today compared to the past. Youth (42.8%) do the same because most of them are educated and are willing to adopt conservation measures. Land in wetlands was accessed by both males and females though total area cultivated by men was larger than that by women. The wetlands of Kilombero are utilized by all gender for various economic activities though males and young people have the biggest share. This disparity in access to wetland resources can be eliminated through more awareness on the gender dimensions of wetlands management.

9. Influence of hydrological fluctuations on vegetation and Avifauna species composition, abundance and diversity in the Bahi Swamp wetlands Central Tanzania

A total of 80 rectangular vegetation plots measuring 2m x 5m were established along transect lines radiating from the core wetland, along eight cardinal directions each transect having a length of 1200m and accommodating 10 sampling points. 10. Abundance and diversity of wild mammals along a hydrologic gradient in the Usangu Wetlands, Tanzania

Abstract

This study was conducted in the Eastern Usangu wetland in Mbeya and Iringa regions to examine the composition, abundance and diversity of mammals along a hydrological gradient. Data were collected in two seasonsusing distance sampling method along transects and a handheld GPS to locate positions. Statistical tests (t-test, Kruskal-Wallis and Pearson’s correlation) were employed to determine the association between distance and abundance of animals observed along the gradient. Diversity of mammals along the gradient was determined by a variety of indices using PRIMER 5.0 software. The study revealed that the abundance of animals sighted decreased with distances from the edge of wetland though not statistically significant along the gradient. Flight distances of observed mammals were high indicating higher degree of disturbances related to anthropogenic activities. Indicators of such disturbances in the wetland areaincluded abandoned farms, demolished houses and livestock dung. There was a statistically significant difference in the number of observed mammals in the two seasons, where species richness and abundance were higher in the late dry season. These results indicate that the wetland is an important refuge area for mammals as both abundance and diversity decreased with increasing distance from the edge of the wetland and increases during the dry season. This study recommends a continuous monitoring of birds and mammals populations such as Topi to help in determining the changes in abundance and diversity over time in Usangu wetlands as a result of conservation interventions against anthropogenic disturbances.

11. Livelihoods and economic benefits of wetland utilization in the Little Ruaha sub-catchment, Mufindi district, Tanzania

Abstract

Information on the contribution of wetland agriculture production to socio - economic in the Little Ruaha sub-catchment is scanty thus constraining the wise use and sustainable utilization of the wetlands. This study was conducted in the wetlands of the Little Ruaha sub-catchment to assess livelihoods and economic benefits of wetland utilization. The specific objectives of this study were to; (a) identify socio-economic activities undertaken by local communities dependence in wetlands of the Little Ruaha sub-catchment (b) identify crops grown in wetlands of the Little Ruaha sub-catchment during both wet and dry seasons, (c) assess the economic value of wetlands outputs to household income and food security, (d) determine factors that influence utilization of wetlands resources in the Little Ruaha sub-catchment. The assessment was carried out in four villages whereby 120 respondents were selected randomly for interviews. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Tools for data analysis included gross margin analysis, food available for consumption method, contingent valuation method and linear regression analysis. Valley bottom activities included agricultural production practiced by over 98% of the population followed by livestock keeping and other wetlands outputs. Activities not directly related to utilization of valley bottoms included petty and major businesses and government employment. Valley bottom wetlands contribute 15% to household food security and 95% to household income that is equivalent to TZS 128 209 (US$103) and 3 234 721 (US$ 2588) per household per year. The age, farming experience, access to markets, number of dependants and household size significantly influenced wetlands utilization. Valley bottom wetlands contribute significantly to household economy and food security. Planning for wetland friendly agricultural activities to ensure wetlands conservat ion and sustainable contribution to household economy and food security is vital.

12. Water use conflicts in northern Tanzania. A case study of Rundugai river catchment, Pangani basin Hzai District

Abstract

Water use conflicts in Tanzania have been identified as serious problems especially in highly populated and land scarce areas. Rundugai river catchment in Kilimanjaro region is one of the areas which are currentlyexperiencing high water use conflicts. The overall objective of this study was to assess water use conflicts in this catchment. Household surveys through questionnaires and focus group discussions were used to collect data from four villages around the catchment. Furthermore, participant observation and secondary data sources were used to supplement information. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used to analyze quantitative data whereas content and structural-functional analysis techniques were used for qualitative data analysis. Five types of key stakeholders/actors involved in regulating and negotiating access to water resource were identified including Farmers, Village government, Pastoralists, TEGEMEO water users association and Pangani water basin. Crop production and animal husbandry were the major land uses pursued by local people around the catchment. Water use conflicts among farmers, between farmers and pastoralists were the most serious conflicts identified in the study area. Majority of the respondents believed that population increase, water scarcity, inadequate participation by local community in the management of water resources, irregularity in scheduling water for irrigation were the main causes of water use conflicts in the study area. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the socio-economic factors that significantly influenced water use conflicts in the catchment included age, farm size and gender. This study concluded that farmers versus farmers’ conflicts were prominent in the study area and the existing water use conflicts are basically due to human population increase and water scarcity which made local communities to compete for water eventually leading into conflicts. 13. Woody vegetation stocking, composition and diversity in Miombo Woodlands in Tanzania: A case study of Mgori forest reserve in Singida District

Abstract

Participatory forest management (PFM) model is aimed at improving both forest resources conservation and livelihoods of local communities. In Tanzania, PFM is widely spread in forest reserves bearing the names of joint forest management, co forest management and community based forest management. However, despite the wide spread, less so far has been done to assess its contribution to conservation of the forest resources and livelihoods of local communities. The study, however, majored on assessment of forest resources by describing woody stocking, and species composition and diversity at Mgori Forest Reserve, in Tanzania. Mgori forest reserve (MFR) is one of the reserves in Tanzania, which are under the model. MFR is within miombo woodlands of Tanzania allocated along the western side of the country. Inventory data were collected from four village forest reserves, which are part of MFR. Atotal of 136 plots of the size 20 x 50 m (0.1ha) were laid in different clusters. The study enumerated a total number of 79 tree/shrub species. DBH distribution followed an inverse ‘J’ shape. Stem density in the study ranged between 494 and 885 N ha-1, while basal area and woody volumedistribution followed a ‘J’ shape. The basal area varied from 9.65 to 18.50 m2 ha-1, while the woody volume was averaged to 65.99 m3 ha-1 with a range of 54.49 to 104.47 m3 ha-1. The most dominant tree species in the study were Brachistigia spiciformis and Jubernadia globifolia. Importantvalue index of tree species ranged between 4.29 and 10.00, while Shannon Weiner index was between 2.54 and 3.04. Index of dominance in this study was between 0.03 and 0.11, while species diversity index ranged from 38.46 to 89.36 and species richness and evenness ranged between 9.65 and 21.04 and 1.55 and 1.81 respectively. The study concludes that woody stocking parameters as well as tree/shrub species composition and diversity indices are normal and similar to any other reserved forests in miombo woodlands.Key words: miombo woodland, stem density, basal area, woody volume, species composition, diversity, participatory forest management, village forest reserves

Abstract

Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1-6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth's 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7 , we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world's most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees., (© 2024. Abstract

Effective restoration planning tools are needed to mitigate global carbon and biodiversity crises. Published spatial assessments of restoration potential are often at large scales or coarse resolutions inappropriate for local action. Using a Tanzanian case study, we introduce a systematic approach to inform landscape restoration planning, estimating spatial variation in cost-effectiveness, based on restoration method, logistics, biomass modelling and uncertainty mapping. We found potential for biomass recovery across 77.7% of a 53 000 km 2 region, but with some natural spatial discontinuity in moist forest biomass, that was previously assigned to human causes. Most areas with biomass deficit (80.5%) were restorable through passive or assisted natural regeneration. However, cumulative biomass gains from planting outweighed initially high implementation costs meaning that, where applicable, this method yielded greater long-term returns on investment. Accounting for ecological, funding and other uncertainty, the top 25% consistently cost-effective sites were within protected areas and/or moderately degraded moist forest and savanna. Agro-ecological mosaics had high biomass deficit but little cost-effective restoration potential. Socio-economic research will be needed to inform action towards environmental and human development goals in these areas. Our results highlight value in long-term landscape restoration investments and separate treatment of savannas and forests. Furthermore, they contradict previously asserted low restoration potential in East Africa, emphasizing the importance of our regional approach for identifying restoration opportunities across the tropics. 18. The effects of seaward distance on above and below ground carbon stocks in estuarine mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract

Background: Mangrove forests have gained recognition for their potential role in climate change mitigation due to carbon sequestration in live trees, and carbon storage in the sediments trapped by mangrove tree roots and pneumatophores. Africa hosts about 19% of the world's mangroves, yet relatively few studies have examined the carbon stocks of African mangroves. The available studies report considerable differences among sites and amongst the different pools of carbon stocks. None considered the effects of seaward distance. We present details of AGC and SOC carbon stocks for Lindi in Tanzania, and focus on how these values differ with increasing seaward distance and, how our results compare to those reported elsewhere across Africa., Results: AGC ranged between 11 and 55 Mg C ha -1 , but was not significantly affected by seaward distance. SOC for 0-1 m depth ranged from 154 to 484, with a mean of 302 Mg C ha -1 . SOC was significantly negatively correlated with seaward distance. Mangrove type (estuarine/oceanic), soil erosion, soil depth may explain these differences We note important methodological differences in previous studies on carbon stocks in mangroves in Africa., Conclusion: This study indicates that seaward distance has an important effect on SOC stocks in the Lindi region of Tanzania. SOC should be fully incorporated into national climate change mitigation policies. Studies should report seaward distance and to describe the type of mangrove stand to make results easily comparable across sites and to assess the true value of Blue Carbon in Africa. We recommend focusing on trees > 10 cm diameter for AGC, and sampling soils to at least 1 m depth for SOC, which would provide a more complete assessment of the potentially considerable mangrove carbon store.

Abstract

Structurally intact tropical forests sequestered about half of the global terrestrial carbon uptake over the 1990s and early 2000s, removing about 15 per cent of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions 1-3 . Climate-driven vegetation models typically predict that this tropical forest 'carbon sink' will continue for decades 4,5 . Here we assess trends in the carbon sink using 244 structurally intact African tropical forests spanning 11 countries, compare them with 321 published plots from Amazonia and investigate the underlying drivers of the trends. The carbon sink in live aboveground biomass in intact African tropical forests has been stable for the three decades to 2015, at 0.66 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year (95 per cent confidence interval 0.53-0.79), in contrast to the long-term decline in Amazonian forests 6 . Therefore the carbon sink responses of Earth's two largest expanses of tropical forest have diverged. The difference is largely driven by carbon losses from tree mortality, with no detectable multi-decadal trend in Africa and a long-term increase in Amazonia. Both continents show increasing tree growth, consistent with the expected net effect of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide and air temperature 7-9 . Despite the past stability of the African carbon sink, our most intensively monitored plots suggest a post-2010 increase in carbon losses, delayed compared to Amazonia, indicating asynchronous carbon sink saturation on the two continents. A statistical model including carbon dioxide, temperature, drought and forest dynamics accounts for the observed trends and indicates a long-term future decline in the African sink, whereas the Amazonian sink continues to weaken rapidly. Overall, the uptake of carbon into Earth's intact tropical forests peaked in the 1990s. Given that the global terrestrial carbon sink is increasing in size, independent observations indicating greater recent carbon uptake into the Northern Hemisphere landmass 10 reinforce our conclusion that the intact tropical forest carbon sink has already peaked. This saturation and ongoing decline of the tropical forest carbon sink has consequences for policies intended to stabilize Earth's climate.
