Calcium (Ca) is a vital nutrient essential for structural development and signal transmission in both plants and animals. In humans, inadequate calcium intake has been correlated with various diseases, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and cancer. In areas where plants serve as a main dietary source, calcium intake is significantly lower than the recommended adequate intake, notably in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Exploring the connections between calcium consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer has significant implications for public health, given that these two conditions are the primary contributors to global mortality. This study conducted a systematic review of existing literature to assess the evidence regarding calcium intake and its effect on blood pressure control, stroke prevention, and the controversial association with myocardial infarction. Furthermore, the preventive effect of calcium intake on tumor development, particularly in cancer prevention, was discussed. The study explores the potential of agronomic biofortification as a key strategy to enhance plant‐based dietary calcium density and improve human health. By advocating for the incorporation of calcium‐rich plants and plant‐derived products, alongside appropriate calcium supplementation, the study emphasizes the economic and practical benefits of plants as a calcium source. This approach is aligned with global dietary patterns and socioeconomic disparities. The review also highlights the need for further research to better understand the mechanisms through which agronomic biofortification can increase dietary calcium intake and reduce the risks of CVD and cancer associated with calcium deficiency. Ultrafine particles (UFPs) with an aerodynamic diameter of <0.1 µm are emerging as the most dominant and abundant particulate matter. Human exposure to these particles has increased dramatically, especially in the indoor environment as most of the population spend 80 to 90% time in the indoor environment. Due to the small size, it is believed that these particles will impose more dangerous and aggressive health impacts. However, knowledge of UFPs is still lacking as most of the previous studies focused on PM10 and PM2.5. The current article aims to provide a critical overview of UFPs sources, composition, physicochemical properties, potential exposure route, toxicity mechanisms, and health impacts to identify the research gaps and future research directions and perspectives. It is commonly observed that inhalation is the dominant route of exposure. Inhaled ultra-fine particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory track, resulting in adverse health impacts, ranging from normal transient of respiratory problems to cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and morbidity, lung cancer, brain disease, mutagenic and carcinogenic impacts. Due to the large surface area, these particles can transport a variety of toxins causing tissue and cell injury, leading to enhanced oxidative stress and inflammation. In order to overcome the environmental burden and health consequences attributed to ultrafine particles, proper air quality guidelines should be introduced and it is suggested that future research should focus on the relationship between health symptoms and UFPs physicochemical properties, especially the mechanics of chemical transformation in human body, their biological behavior, and toxicological effect. Rapid industrialization and urbanization have resulted in the widespread contamination of soil by potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs). Among these, arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) are particularly concerning, affecting millions of hectares of arable land globally and posing significant threats to food security and human health. Biochar (BC) has emerged as a promising soil amendment due to its ability to mitigate soil pollution by immobilizing contaminants. But how biochar-linked free radicals affect this process in plants and soil remains murky. Additionally, the mechanism of the geochemical transformation of PTMs in soil-plant systems influenced by biochar-based free radicals is unclear. Here, the influence of free radicals on immobilization, and transformation of PTMs in the soil-plant system under various BC and Comp treatment was investigated. Six treatment groups (1% and 2% biochar, compost, combined application, and control) were randomly assigned to pots in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) to test their effects on maize growth. Results revealed that there was a noticeable rise in the concentration of free radicals in both the BC and Comp treatments compared to the control and the combined application of BC and Comp treatments. The biochar treatment showed a slight reduction in these functional groups, suggesting possible adsorption or sequestration onto the BC surface while the Comp treatment led to an increase in functional groups associated with carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, indicating enhanced organic matter content. The combined treatment exhibited intermediate effects, suggesting a synergistic interaction between Comp and biochar. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the BC did not demonstrate significant alterations in soil mineralogy, suggesting minimal direct effects on mineral dissolution or transformation. Conclusively, biochar-generated free radicals, especially hydroxyl radicals (•OH), play a crucial role in PTMs (i.e., Cd, Cr, Ni, As and Pb) immobilization in soil-plant systems.
