Background: Component positioning in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is among the primary indicators for longevity and success. Acetabular component positioning has been discussed in literature at length; however, femoral component positioning is also important as it contributes to combined anteversion., Methods: In this study, we examined the changes in femoral anteversion after the implantation of anatomic stem ABG II. A cadaveric study, a computed tomography-based computer modeling study, and a clinical study using a navigation system were conducted to document these changes., Results: These studies demonstrated that the anatomic stem ABG II increased the postimplantation femoral version by approximately 7°. The postimplantation versions followed a bimodal distribution. The computed tomography and navigation data also highlighted that the patient population may roughly be divided into 2 groups: the first group that needs anteverted stem and the second group that needs little or no anteversion in the stem to recreate the desired version and offset., Conclusion: Based upon our data, we propose a new anatomic stem design that is offered in 2 version angles of 0° and 7° to help create the desired version and offset., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. The clinical and radiographic results of 54 knees (52 patients) with a unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) with fixed-all polyethylene bearing implanted for lateral osteoarthritis were studied at 5- to 16-year follow-up (mean, 100.9 months). Four underwent second surgery: 1 conversion to total knee arthroplasty and 3 received UKA in the medial compartment. The mean International Knee Society knee score was 94.9 points, with a mean range of motion of 132.6° and a mean International Knee Society function score totaling 81.8 points. Implant survival was 98.08% at 10 years. These excellent results suggest that UKA with fixed-all polyethylene bearing is a reliable option for management of isolated lateral knee osteoarthritis., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. In 1990 we studied the prevalence and determinants of carotid atherosclerosis in an Italian general asymptomatic population (630 males and 718 females aged 18-99 years) living in the San Daniele district of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The global prevalence of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis was 25.4% in men and 26.4% in women. We considered intima-media thickness, non-stenotic plaque (< 40%), and stenotic plaque (> 40%). In the multiple logistic regression, the cross-sectional analysis of subjects aged 40 years showed a positive significant association between plaques/stenosis and age (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (p < 0.01), cigarette smoking (p < 0.0001), and the protective effect of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.037). In 2002 we decided to re-examine the initial cohort with the following objectives: prospectively evaluating the modifications of the previous carotid findings, their relationship with known and less documented cardiovascular risk factors and the predictive power of those variations on incident coronary and cerebrovascular events. We plan to evaluate the association of carotid plaque and carotid intima-media thickness with the genetic polymorphisms involved in atherosclerosis in survivors and finally to study the incidence and the determinants of atrial fibrillation in a general population. In this paper, we will describe the methodology of the screening and the cohort population characteristics. We have compared the San Daniele Project survivor cohort's characteristics to the current general population of the same age living in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region so as to extend the study's conclusions to the whole regional population.
