We study numerically the effects of time delay in networks of delay-coupled excitable FitzHugh Nagumo systems with dissipation. The generation of periodic self-sustained oscillations and its threshold are analyzed depending on the dissipation of a single neuron, the delay time, and random initial conditions. The peculiarities of spatiotemporal dynamics of time-delayed bidirectional ring-structured FitzHugh-Nagumo neuronal systems are investigated in cases of local and nonlocal coupling topology between the nodes, and a first-order nonequilibrium phase transition to synchrony is established. It is shown that the emergence of oscillatory activity in delay-coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons is observed for smaller values of the coupling strength as the dissipation parameter decreases. This can provide the possibility of controlling the spatiotemporal behavior of the considered neuronal networks. We describe spatiotemporal patterns in a network of identical van der Pol oscillators coupled in a two-dimensional geometry. In this study, we show that the system under study demonstrates a plethora of different spatiotemporal structures including chimera states when the coupling parameters are varied. Spiral wave chimeras are formed in the network when the coupling strength is rather large and the coupling range is short enough. Another type of chimeras is a target wave chimera. It is shown that solitary states play a crucial role in forming an incoherence cluster of this chimera state. They can also spread within the coherence cluster. Furthermore, when the coupling range increases, the target wave chimera evolves to the regime of solitary states which are randomly distributed in space. Growing the coupling strength leads to the attraction of solitary states to a certain spatial region, while the synchronous regime is set in the other part of the system. This spatiotemporal pattern represents a solitary state chimera, which is firstly found in the system of continuous-time oscillators. We investigate the emergence of amplitude and frequency chimera states in ring-star networks consisting of identical Chua circuits connected via nonlocal diffusive, bidirectional coupling. We first identify single-well chimera patterns in a ring network under nonlocal coupling schemes. When a central node is added to the network, forming a ring-star network, the central node acts as the distributor of information, increasing the chances of synchronization. Numerical simulations show that the radial coupling strength $k$ between the central and the peripheral nodes acts as an order parameter leading from a lower to a higher frequency domain. The present work is devoted to the detailed quantification of the transition from spiral waves to spiral wave chimeras in a network of self-sustained oscillators with two-dimensional geometry. The basic elements of the networks are the van der Pol oscillator and the FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron. Both models are in the regime of relaxation oscillations. We analyze the regime by using the indices of local sensitivity which enables us to evaluate the sensitivity of each individual oscillator at finite time. Spi-ral waves are observed in both lattices when the interaction between elements have the local character. The dynamics of all the elements is regular. There are no high-sensitive regions. We have discovered that when the coupling becomes nonlocal, the features of the systems significantly changes. The oscillation regime of the spiral wave center element switches to chaotic one. Besides this, a region with high sensitivity occurs around this oscillator. Moreover, we show that the latter expands in space with elongation of the coupling range. As a result, an incoherence cluster of the spiral wave chimera is formed exactly within this high-sensitive area. Formation of this cluster is accompanied by the sharp increase in values of the maximal Lyapunov exponent to the positive region. The behavior of the ensemble of coupled van der Pol oscillators is abundant when coupling parameters are changed. Incoherent and chimera-like regimes are observed at small values of the coupling strength parameter. Synchronization takes place with an increase in the coupling strength and coupling range parameters. Various chimera and solitary states are realised when the coupling strength parameter is sufficiently large. The single van der Pol oscillator is taken in the regime of relaxation oscillations. Therefore, the lattice may realise spiral wave and spiral wave chimera regimes. Besides, target wave and solitary state regimes are observed in the ensemble. Finally, the solitary state and solitary state chimera regimes are firstly shown for the lattice of coupled van der Pol oscillators., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

We consider a homoclinic orbit to a saddle fixed point of an arbitrary $C^\infty$ map $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and study the phenomenon that $f$ has an infinite family of asymptotically stable, single-round periodic solutions. From classical theory, this requires $f$ to have a homoclinic tangency. We show it also necessary for $f$ to satisfy a `global resonance' condition and for the eigenvalues associated with the fixed point, $\lambda$ and $\sigma$, to satisfy $|\lambda \sigma| = 1$. The phenomenon is codimension-three in the case $\lambda \sigma = -1$, but codimension-four in the case $\lambda \sigma = 1$ because here the coefficients of the leading-order resonance terms associated with $f$ at the fixed point must add to zero. We also identify conditions sufficient for the phenomenon to occur, illustrate the results for an abstract family of maps, and show numerically computed basins of attraction., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures
