Abstract: The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \mu^{\pm} \nu$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: $K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. Abstract: The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $\pi^0\pi^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. Abstract: From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 $\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ candidates with a background contamination of $30.8 \pm 4.2$ events. From this sample, the BR($\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}$) is measured to be $(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}$.

Abstract: As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures.

Abstract: The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K± → π0π0μ±ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10−6. 14. Deep-reaching global ocean overturning circulation generated by surface buoyancy forcing

Abstract: In contrast with the atmosphere, which is heated from below by solar radiation, the ocean is both heated and cooled from above. To drive a deep-reaching overturning circulation in this context, it is generally assumed that either intense interior mixing by winds and internal tides, or wind-driven upwelling is required; in their absence, the circulation is thought to collapse to a shallow surface cell. We demonstrate, using a primitive equation model with an idealized domain and no wind forcing, that the surface temperature forcing can in fact drive an inter-hemisphere overturning provided that there is an open channel unblocked in the zonal direction, such as in the Southern Ocean. With this geometry, rotating horizontal convection, in combination with asymmetric surface cooling between the north and south, drives a deep-reaching two-cell overturning circulation. The resulting vertical stratification closely resembles that of the real ocean, suggesting that wind-driven pumping is not necessary to produce a deep-reaching overturning circulation contrary to common belief, and that buoyancy forcing plays a much more active role than is usually assumed., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract: The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-) decay from an exposure of 1.7 x 10(11) charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-)) = (4.24 +/- 0.14) x 10(-6). The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Abstract: Among the meson decays, K→πνν‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the BR(K+→π+νν‾) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.

Abstract: NA48/2 results contributing to ChPT testing are presented. A sample of 1663 events of the rare decay $ K^ \pm \to \mu ^ \pm ve^ + e^ - $ has been selected with a minimume+e−eﬀective mass of 140 MeV. The measured model independent decay rate is in agreement with ChPT predictions. The branching ratio of the $ K^ \pm \to \mu ^ \pm ve^ + e^ - $ decay, never observed so far, has been obtained from a sample of about 5000 candidates with less than 6% background, also in agreement with ChPT predictions. In addition, a most precise measurement of the charged kaon semileptonic formfactors has been obtained from 4.4 millionKe3and 2.3 millionKµ3events collected in 2004.

Abstract: The first observation of the $K^\pm → π^\pm π^0 e^+ e^-$ rare decay by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is reported, based on $∼2\times 10^{11} K^\pm$ decays recorded in 2003-2004. From a sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background the branching ratio in the full kinematic region is measured to be BR($K^± → π^± π^0 e^+ e^-) = (4.24\pm 0.14)\times 10^-6$.The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on Chiral Perturbation Theory. The CP-violating asymmetry between $K^\pm → π^+ π^0 e^+ e^-$ and $K^- → π^- π^0 e^+ e^-$ decay rates has been measured, providing an upper limit $|A_{CP}| < 4.82 \times 10^{-2}$ at 90% CL.The NA48/2 combined measurement of the charged kaon semileptonic form factors, based on 4.4 million $K^\pm → π^0 e^± ν_e$ and 2.3 million $K^\pm → π^0 μ^\pm ν_μ$ events collected in 2004, is presented. This result represents the most precise form factor measurement from a combined $K_{l3}^{\pm}$ analysis.

Abstract: NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar\nu$ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. For this purpose, innovative techniques have been developed, in particular, in the domain of low-mass tracking devices. Detector construction spanned several years from 2009 to 2014. The collaboration started detector commissioning in 2014 and will collect data until the end of 2018. 39. Implementation of a geometrically informed and energetically constrained mesoscale eddy parameterization in an ocean circulation model

Abstract: The global stratification and circulation, and their sensitivities to changes in forcing, depend crucially on the representation of the mesoscale eddy field in a numerical ocean circulation model. Here, a geometrically informed and energetically constrained parameterization framework for mesoscale eddies —termed GEOMETRIC — is proposed and implemented in three-dimensional channel and sector models. The GEOMETRIC framework closes eddy buoyancy fluxes according to the standard Gent–McWilliams scheme, but with the eddy transfer coefficient constrained by the depth-integrated eddy energy field, provided through a prognostic eddy energy budget evolving with the mean state. It is found that coarse resolution models employing GEOMETRIC display broad agreement in the sensitivity of the circumpolar transport, meridional overturning circulation and depth-integrated eddy energy pattern to surface wind stress as compared with analogous reference calculations at eddy permitting resolutions. Notably, eddy saturation — the insensitivity of the time-mean circumpolar transport to changes in wind forcing — is found in the coarse resolution sector model. In contrast, differences in the sensitivity of the depth-integrated eddy energy are found in model calculations in the channel experiments that vary the eddy energy dissipation, attributed to the simple prognostic eddy energy equation employed. Further improvements to the GEOMETRIC framework require a shift in focus from how to close for eddy buoyancy fluxes to the representation of eddy energetics.

Abstract: The main physics goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to precisely measure the branching ratio of the Kaon rare decay K+→π+νν. This decay is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model. On the other hand its branching ratio is calculated with high accuracy. NA62 is designed to measure the K+→π+νν decay rate with an uncertainty better than 10%. The measurement can serve as a probe to some new physics phenomena, which can alter the decay rate. The NA62 experiment has been successfully launched in October 2014. The theory framework as well as the NA62 detector and the preliminary results are reviewed in this article.

Abstract: Looking for phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM) in rare decays is a complementary approach to direct searches for New Physics (NP) at colliders. One of the theoretically cleanest processes is the ultra rare decay K+ → π+νν. The goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10% precision. The experiment has been launched in 2014. In 2015, the detector was commissioned at a low intensity beam. The experimental setup is described and performances achieved in 2015 are discussed in view of the final measurement.

Abstract: The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is aimed to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu}$ with 10\% accuracy. The experiment operates with a 75 GeV/c high intensity (750 MHz) secondary beam. A new detector, named Charged Particle Hodoscope (CHOD), designed to produce an input signal to the L0 trigger processor for events with charged particles produced in kaon decays, has been assembled, installed, integrated in NA62 Data Acquisition System (DAQ) and commissioned in 2016. Abstract: The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay K+->pi+ nu nubar with 10% precision. For this purpose the experiment aims to collect of the order of 100 K+->pi+ nu nubar events which would require at least 10^13 K+ decays in the fiducial volume of the detector. The large sample of K+ decays that will be available at NA62 allows the experiment to carry out a rich program for rare and forbidden K+ and pi0 decays, including lepton flavour and/or number violating modes, sterile neutrinos, exotic particles (e.g. Dark Photons). NA62's potential for such searches in K+ and pi0 decays is discussed, with initial sensitivity estimates. In addition, plans for continuing the experiment after 2021 (Long Shutdown 2) are presented, including in particular the possibility to operate in a beam-dump mode for exploring various Dark Matter scenarios.

Abstract: The flavor physics sector allows us to explore the possible extensions of the Standard Model (SM) in a complementary approach to the direct searches conducted i.e. at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). New physics contributions at high energy scales can manifest themselves in low energy phenomena provided that the observables are carefully chosen, precisely measured and compared to accurate predictions. A stringent test of the SM predictions is the observation of the rare decay K+ to pi+ nu nubar. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 achieving the commissioning of the detectors and the designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is described and the quality of data collected in view of the final measurement is reported.
