Abstract

A Mattauch-Herzog geometry mass spectrograph (MHMS) has been equipped with a novel array detector, the focal plane camera (FPC). The FPC consists of an array of gold Faraday cups, each coupled to its own integrator, with interrogation of the integrators performed by a multiplexer. The initial coupling of this instrument with a pin-type glow discharge source has provided limits of detection in the single to hundreds of nanograms per gram regime; isotope ratio accuracy and precision better than 5% error and 0.2% RSD, respectively; and a linear dynamic range of at least 6 orders of magnitude. A current weakness of the FPC is its pixel size, which limits both sensitivity and baseline resolution (to R = 130). The minimum data acquisition time for multiple images at present is 1 ms/image, with a dead time of 3.2 ms between images, which will limit the ability of the FPC to monitor extremely short transient signals.

Abstract

In this brief, a strategy to design high-fan-in multiplexers with minimum delay is proposed. The work extends the optimization proposed in Lin, 2000, to the case of switches with driving capability, that exhibit better performance in terms of noise immunity as well as being suitable for voltage scaling, which are becoming increasingly important properties in today's CMOS technologies. Moreover, the design strategy explicitly accounts for wiring parasitics in design equations. The criteria found are simple and useful right from the early design phases, as well as being independent of the technology used. In addition, an approximate expression of delay is given to predict the speed performance achievable for a given process before actually carrying out the optimized design. As a design example, a 256-input multiplexer was designed and simulated after extracting the parasitics from layout using a 0.35-[micro]m CMOS process. The predicted delay agrees well with simulation data. Index Terms--Address decoder, CMOS digital integrated circuits, column decoder, multiplexer, multiplexing.

A survey of the major techniques used in the design of microwave filters is presented in this paper. It is shown that the basis for much fundamental microwave filter theory lies in the realm of lumped-element filters, which indeed are actually used directly for many applications at microwave frequencies as high as 18 GHz. Many types of microwave filters are discussed with the object of pointing out the most useful references, especially for a newcomer to the field. This paper provides an overview of the microwave applications of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technology. The main characteristics of HTS materials are outlined, highlighting the differences between superconductors and normal conductors. This paper presents recent progress in the development of HTS filters, multiplexers, cryogenic receivers, delay lines, and antennas. A brief summary of cryocooler technology and cryopackaging requirements is presented. The benefits of using HTS technology in wireless and satellite systems are also discussed. The intent of this paper is to provide perspective to newcomers in the field and to empower the potential end-users with current status and performance capabilities of HTS microwave devices. Abstract

A statistical method for calculation of intermodulation noise is developed for CATV systems whose traffic can be characterized as a sum of a large number of independent signals. The Central Limit Theorem leads to a method of calculating the intermodulation noise power spectrum, given the degree of nonlinearity of the transmission system. The method is demonstrated by calculating the signal to intermodulation noise ratio in the various channels of a prototype cable network supporting HD-MAC, PAL and FM radio signals. The spectra of these individual signals are simplified in order to perform part of the calculation analytically. As expected, the signal to intermodulation noise ratio decreases when the total signal power is increased. This method can be used to calculate the necessary back-off of a cable network for a given frequency plan, and thus to determine suitable plans for loading and controlling CATV networks.
