This paper discusses the design of interactive gamified assessments for an introductory programming course based on the multimedia segmenting principle and gamification. The objective is to develop more engaging online programming assessments for low-achieving students. The general design follows Nielsen's design guidelines and incorporates Zaharias' usability evaluation framework with the motivation to learn. The methodology employed the Successive Approximation Model Version 2 (SAM2), comprising two key phases: preparation and iterative design. In the initial phase, a comparative analysis was performed to determine the design principles. The iterative design phase encompassed the application's design via storyboards, the development of the high-fidelity prototype, and users' reviews. A qualitative approach was adopted, involving a user-centred design (UCD) session through focus group discussions with 12 first-year students from the Diploma of Computer Science program, all of whom were low achievers in programming. The participants need to review and rate the prototype based on the scales of the usability recommendations, which are visual design, content design, navigation, interaction, gamification design, and multimedia design. The results from the UCD session revealed that all participants agreed with the usability recommendations integrated into the interactive gamified programming assessments, with the highest mean score of 5.00.

This article discusses multimodal practices in the context of teaching and learning and how this idea might inform and facilitate mathematical learning, especially for Latinx students. We discuss qualitative data drawn from a study of an elementary bilingual classroom (age 10 and age 11) in a Midwestern city (USA) that is exceptional because the students successfully do high-level mathematics. We describe one class episode and one student's use of multiple resources to create meaning. Through this we highlight the nature and relevance of multimodal practices for learning mathematics. This case highlights the necessity of creating environments, where students, especially those who have been historically excluded, use resources to make meaning and gain greater access to mathematics.

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) is on the rise to cater to non-traditional students. However, the surge in master's and doctoral students opting for ODeL raises concerns about the quality and timely completion of degrees. Existing literature on student attrition in higher education indicates that both student-related factors and institutional variables significantly impact completion rates. Factors such as students' sense of connection or isolation, as well as institutional aspects like supervisor responsiveness to feedback and feedforward, contribute to student persistence. To address this early attrition and extended stays in postgraduate studies, a community of practice (CoP), comprising lecturers and master's and doctoral students was formed. The CoP employed the Social Learning Theory (SLT) approach to initiate collaborative partnerships designed to promote a research culture and explore alternative approaches to curb master's and doctoral late completion and attrition. This paper reports on a study undertaken to explore the experiences, perceptions and insights of master's and doctoral candidates regarding the implementation of innovative multimodal Open Distance e-Learning supervision practices. Grounded in SLT, the exploratory case study employed an open-ended questionnaire to gather data from the students participating in the support programme. The findings revealed the positive impact of innovative practices on candidates' academic development and overall research experience. The findings further demonstrated that virtual communication tools have significantly enhanced collaboration between candidates and supervisors, breaking down geographical barriers and facilitating real-time feedback and guidance. The innovative multimodal OdeL supervision practices gave master's and doctoral candidates flexibility and increased their learning engagement.

An interactive multimedia-based e-module is an enhanced version of conventional modules incorporating information technology. It integrates navigation buttons and user instructions, enabling independent use by those at any location and time. This phenomenon facilitates the optimal implementation of learning in the digital literacy era. This study employed a quantitative design utilizing the pre-experimental design research method. It specifically utilized a one-shot case study research form to examine the effectiveness of learning. Additionally, it employed the correlation analysis method to investigate the relationship between student responses and learning outcomes. This effort is achieved by utilizing interactive multimedia-based e-modules focused on the topic of building space in elementary school. A total of 24 fifth-grade students were included as research subjects. Moreover, the employed instruments consisted of tests of learning outcomes and questionnaires. The research data were evaluated using descriptive statistics, the N-Gain, and the correlation test. The findings indicated that using interactive multimedia-based e-modules for teaching space-related content yielded significant positive effects on learning outcomes. The research data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain, and correlation tests. The findings revealed that: (1) the utilization of interactive multimedia-based E-Modules for teaching space-related content is quite effective, resulting in significant improvements in learning outcomes falling within the medium category; and (2) there exists a strong and close relationship between student responses to the implementation of interactive multimedia-based E-Modules and their learning outcomes in mathematics learning at the elementary school level.

In response to paradigm shifts in education, teacher education institutions have increasingly adopted flexible learning modalities such as online courses, blended learning approaches, and personalized instruction to meet the diverse needs of students and prepare educators for the demands of modern classrooms. This study used a mixed-method research design to gain a comprehensive understanding of the flexible teaching and learning modalities it brought to mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) and learners in a state university in West Philippines. Since ethical considerations preclude random sampling, the study comprised nonrandom participants using purposive sampling, where 189 learners were surveyed, and six MTEs and 16 learners were interviewed. A researcher-made interview guide was prepared to describe the flexible teaching and learning modalities and opportunities of the MTEs. Also, a researcher-made questionnaire was used to describe the learners' general assessment of the flexible teaching and learning modalities in mathematics education. Quantitative data were gathered online, while qualitative data were gathered through interviews. Results showed that flexible teaching-learning approaches have implications for education, overcoming barriers, and promoting engagement. The findings highlight the importance of technology integration, inclusive assessment modalities, infrastructure support, and professional development opportunities in enhancing the quality and accessibility of flexible teaching and learning, ultimately leading to inclusive educational environments. Therefore, the educational institution must adopt flexible instructional modalities, emphasize diverse assessment methods, and personalize the learning experience by integrating online platforms and various assessments for effective mathematics instruction.

This study identifies the best online teaching practices to benefit first-year visual arts students, notably to include instructor-created videos. Such instructor-created videos provide a firm foundation for these students to succeed in their first year of college. The introduction of Web 2.0, focusing on user-generated content, has shown potential to address this issue in online higher education. This study will examine the impact of instructor-created videos to improve learning outcomes, satisfaction, and persistence. It focuses on key areas such as Communities of Practice (CoP), Project-Based Learning (PBL), and instructional design in the visual arts. This study used a quantitative quasi-experimental design to examine the difference in student grades before and after instructor implementation of instructor-created multimedia elements in their courses. Findings highlight the value of instructor-created multimedia elements, particularly for 'C' students, including implementation and challenges. By considering these factors, instructors can create effective and engaging online courses for visual arts education that may improve student performance, retention, and persistence to graduation.

The biological concept has a broad scope and requires the visualisation of bioprocesses to provide complex understanding. Learning media can help visualise bioprocesses to enhance students' cognitive abilities. The study aimed to develop, test the practicality, and test the effectiveness of video animation in improving grade XI high school students' understanding of the coordination system. This study involved 66 high school students in grade XI of the science department at State Senior High School 2 Malang, Indonesia. This research used the Lee & Owens Multimedia-Based Instructional Design method, which consisted of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. In the evaluation stage, we conducted face validity by media experts and content validity by material experts, successively getting results of 97% and 100%. Then, the concurrent validity test was obtained from student assessments of the media interface with a result of 97%, the user-friendly with a result of 100%, and the appropriateness of the material with a result of 95%. In the final stage, construct validity was carried out through an effectiveness test using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. Data analysis was performed using the Independent T-test, with the results showing a significance of 0.006 < 0.05, which showed a significant difference in the average post-test between the control and experimental classes. The average score in the experimental class increased from 76.32 to 89.03, but the control class increased from 76.38 to 84.56. The results showed that the video animation media effectively improved students' abilities. Therefore, this learning media can be a recommendation in the learning coordination system.

High-order cognitive skills (HOCS) are required to solve problems and make decisions. ARVi or augmented reality virus is a learning medium used to enhance HOCS. Aims of this research is to find out the effect of implementing ARVi media on enhancing high-level cognitive skills of students. The research is a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research was conducted in MAN 1 Kota Bogor class 10 using the Merdeka curriculum. The research instrument is a multiple-choice test that has been validated to measure high-level cognitive skills. The result of the t-test shows t-value (3.14) > t-table (1.98), indicating that there is a significant difference between the posttest scores of the control group and the experimental group. This means that the use of ARVi media has an effect on high-level cognitive skills. The improvement in high-level cognitive skills was continuous in C5 (evaluation) at 78%, C6 (creation) at 72%, and C4 (analysis) at 70%. These results are not independent of the support provided by the various content offered by ARVi media, such as augmented reality, literacy, and high-level questionnaires. Current education can benefit from technologies like ARVi media that help increase the high-level cognitive skills of students.

This paper presents an analysis of the use of multimedia and hands-on models on university students' understanding of stereochemistry. The relationship between students' scientific reasoning skills and their understanding of stereochemistry was also determined. Two groups of second-year chemistry students from the State University of Malang taking organic chemistry for the 2020/21 academic year participated in this study. One group of students experienced stereochemistry teaching using multimedia models and the other hands-on models as the learning medium. Lawson's Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning and Short-Answer Stereochemistry Test were applied. The former was deployed to measure students' scientific reasoning skills, while the latter was used to test their understanding of stereochemistry. The results revealed that the students' scientific reasoning skills were significantly below the expected standard, falling in the low category. Students with high scientific reasoning skills exhibited a better understanding of stereochemistry than those with low levels. Both multimedia and hands-on models revealed an equal contribution towards students' understanding of stereochemistry. Also, it suggests that multimedia models tend to favour students with high scientific reasoning skills, while hands-on models favour those with low skills.

Technological developments in various fields are the key to progress in the digital era. The utilization of technology-based learning media in education makes learning more interactive and supports independent learning. This study aims to develop and test the practicality and effectiveness of storyline-based nervous system e-comics media to support students' independent learning. This research uses the Research and Development (RnD) method with the Lee & Owen model, consisting of the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research was conducted with the subjects in this study, class XI MIPA SMA Negeri 2 Malang students, totalling 60 people. A pre-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest was used to test the effectiveness of the media. Data were collected through questionnaires and tests. The media validation results obtained 100%, material validation 100%, and student response results 98.7% in the class trial. The effectiveness test used a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The results showed a significant difference between the posttest of both classes with Sig. (2-tailed) 0.00 <0.05, there is a significant difference between the control and experimental classes. Storylinebased nerve e-comic media can facilitate independent learning more interestingly and interactively.

This study attempts to analyze the innovation of learning media in elementary schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. This library and field research has the data collected from Google Scholar database concerning scientific articles about innovative learning media in elementary schools during the pandemic. The data were collected using the keyword "Innovation of SD learning media". They were taken from 359 data: 280 Indonesian version and 79 Inglish versio. The data were classified into Indonesian, Natural Science, Social Sciences, and Mathematics, Civics, and Thematic subjects.There are more technology-based media than non-technology-based media. The types of media used in this research are video media, games, books, PowerPoint, and concrete objects used in the six subjects focusing on research. Based on the frequency and quantity of instructional media, the researchers recommend that the Indonesian language subjects use books, videos, and concrete objects. In science subjects, video learning media, PowerPoint, and books are used. In social studies subjects, games, videos, and concrete objects are used. In the Mathematics subject, media games, videos, and concrete objects are used. In PKN (Civics) subjects, video learning media, ICT, and comics are used. In thematic learning, video learning media, games, and books are used.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze factors that affect the behavioral intentions of undergraduate students to use blended learning methods. The research uses the three-tier use model (3-TUM) to explore the influencing behavioral factors of students at the undergraduate level to use LMSs. "The research was carried out at a university and consisted of undergraduate students majoring in business-related fields. Students responded to online questionnaires administered at the end of the semester concerning their experience with the LMS." A customized Moodle platform was used to measure the user's perceived usefulness, perceived satisfaction, and perceived ease of use with the LMS. Results show that interactivity in portal and self-efficacy have a direct impact on all second-tier constructs, while multimedia instruction influences only perceived usefulness and perceived satisfaction. In addition, perceived usefulness impacts perceived satisfaction. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly impact behavioral intention of students to use learning platforms, while the relation between perceived satisfaction and behavioral intention was unindicative. "The study confirms that the individual experience of users and the quality of the system affect the successful implementation of an LMS and its adoption by users."

Multimedia has been a strategy in teaching processes, especially within the learning management system (LMS). However, multimedia tools have not delivered satisfaction towards the learning process. In addition, the lack of engagement within the LMS has been a real problem for e-learning. Therefore, this study aims to identify what the challenges are in implementing multimedia and how multimedia could enhance user engagement. This study hopes to give both academics and practitioners insights into a successful multimedia implementation within the LMS platform. This study is conducted through a systematic literature review (SLR) based on the PRISMA methodology, which contains four filtering phases: identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. The study managed to obtain 25 relevant papers on multimedia and user engagement after several filtering processes. It was found that interactive multimedia was the most implemented multimedia type. Furthermore, the pedagogical strategy was claimed the most important challenge that needs to be considered in multimedia implementation. Moreover, the results show that perceived interaction within multimedia could significantly enhance user engagement in LMS.

This study proposes that the gestures of an agent tutor in a multimedia learning environment can generate positive and negative emotions in learners and influence their cognitive processes. To achieve this, we developed and integrated positive and negative agent tutor gestures in a multimedia learning environment directed by cognitive gestures. The effects of emotion type on cognition were examined in terms of cognitive load, learning motivation, and achievement. The subjects were 46 university students in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The students were divided into three learner groups: cognition, cognition + negative emotion, and cognition + positive emotion. The learners watched a tutorial lecture on the Notion note-taking app by an agent tutor. Data analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA to determine the cognitive load, learning motivation, and achievement. The results showed that the positive emotion design was more effective in terms of intrinsic cognitive load, learning motivation, and achievement but had a higher extrinsic cognitive load. However, even the negative + passive group showed more positive learning than the cognition group. Although this study focused on gestures by an agent tutor, it implies that such gestures in multimedia learning contexts must be informed by emotional as well as cognitive design to provide a more meaningful learning experience.

The purpose of the study is to present the results of investigating pre-service teachers' perceptions of their readiness to develop and use multimedia-based English language training textbooks. The dimensional structure of the designed readiness is regarded as a complex personal integrative quality. A corresponding survey questionnaire is compiled to determine its content. The study included 81 senior students from the foreign language faculty at Karaganda Buketov University. The research's methodology included statistical analysis of quantitative data, experimental training and participant self-assessment questionnaires. Preliminary tests were conducted in both the experimental and control groups aimed at identifying participants' perceptions of their initial level of readiness for the development and use of multimedia-based textbooks. Participants in the experimental group participated in an experimental course on technology development and the use of multimedia-based textbooks with the presentation of their final project. When the teaching period was over, the post-test was taken. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the complex assessment of readiness in the mentioned area enabling the definition and correction of gaps in its structural content. The designed course proved its effectiveness in practice as asserted by the post-test scores.

By using information technology, science learning can be widely disseminated, including, for example, to rural schools. However, the implementation of inquiry-based science learning with action-to-ground science concepts for rural learners needs to be explored. To address this purpose, the present study adopted "live stream" technology with a science inquiry model for rural students to learn four science concepts. Using different science knowledge representations, the predict-do/observe-quiz/discuss-explain-transform (P-D/O-Q/D-E-T) inquiry model was designed to be implemented via live streaming with local teachers' facilitation. Drawing on the cognitive-affective theory of multimedia learning and triadic reciprocal determinism, the present study focused on exploring how the live-streaming presence and external cognitive load can predict participants' flow and learning performance. A total of 45 participants completed the questionnaire, pre-test, and post-test, and structural equation modeling was adopted to test the hypotheses of this study. The results showed that live-streaming presence could positively predict flow, but external cognitive load can negatively predict flow, while flow can positively predict learning performance. This live-streaming method uses inexpensive and affordable educational technology that can be implemented at any rural elementary school to enable rural students to learn science remotely.

This study investigates the effect of offering multiple means of representing content, one aspect of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Students across the full range of the dis/ability spectrum all too often struggle to achieve course success. UDL-based course design promises to help students with disabilities (whether disclosed or not) as well as help all students, but research is needed to verify UDL's specific benefits for student learning outcomes. This study aims to better understand the efficacy of representing course content using multiple means, which is one aspect of UDL pertaining to perception. Data were gathered from over 50 online courses in 14 subjects across the undergraduate curriculum taught with an adaptive learning system at a women's institution. A panel data analysis with almost 200,000 cases of student learning activities investigated the effect of representing content in multiple ways (i.e., text, video, audio, interactive, or mixed content presentation format). When students used multiple modalities, a positive effect was found on student learning measures of knowledge gained within the adaptive system. The results have implications for future UDL-related research, as well as faculty development and curricular design.

Following the continuous reform and innovation of classroom teaching methods and pedagogy in higher education, the support provided by traditional classrooms for new classes seems to be insufficient. Empirical exploration into the impact of learning spaces on student learning motivation, particularly in terms of how and to what extent, has been limited. This study focuses on student intrinsic learning motivation as the dependent variable and constructs an influence model incorporating factors such as learning space, pedagogy and classroom relationships. A comparative analysis is conducted to assess the differential influence between two learning space types: active learning spaces and traditional classrooms. Utilizing a convenience sampling method, students engaged in coursework at University A's 'Future Learning Experience Center' and traditional multimedia learning spaces over three academic terms were selected. Differential tests were performed on data collected from various learning environment types, and the impact of learning space, teaching methods and social relationships on students' intrinsic learning motivation was validated using structural equation modelling. Results indicate that scores in the dimensions of learning space, teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships and student intrinsic learning motivation were significantly higher in the active learning space compared to traditional classrooms. Surprisingly, learning space exhibited no significant direct effect on student intrinsic learning motivation but demonstrated a significant indirect effect. The influencing factors model presented in this study sheds light on the type of learning space's impact on student intrinsic learning motivation, offering theoretical guidance and practical data for future research endeavours.

Background: Although adding embodied instructors on the screen is considered an effective way to improve online multimedia learning, its effectiveness is still controversial. The level of realism of embodied on-screen instructors may be an influencing factor, but it is unclear how it affects multimedia learning. Aims: We explored whether and how embodied on-screen instructors rendered with different levels of realism in multimedia lessons affect learning process and learning outcomes. Samples: We recruited 125 college students as participants. Methods: Students learned about neural transmission in an online multimedia lesson that included a real human, cartoon human, cartoon animal or no instructor. Results: Students learning with cartoon human or cartoon animal instructors tended to fixate more on the relevant portions of the screen and performed better on retention and transfer tests than no instructor group. The real human group fixated more on the instructor, fixated less on the relevant portion of the screen and performed worse on a retention test in comparison to the cartoon human group. Fixation time on the instructor fully mediated the relationship between instructor realism and retention score. Conclusions: The addition of embodied on-screen instructors can promote multimedia learning, but the promotion effect would be better if the embodied instructor was a cartoon animal or cartoon human rather than a real human. This suggests an important boundary condition in which less realism of on-screen embodied instructors produces better learning processes and outcomes.

There are increasingly frequent calls for school mathematics curricula to be informed by robust research evidence. One approach to achieving this is designing evidence-informed learning and teaching resources for the classroom. In this paper, we reflect on our experiences of designing a free and fully resourced complete set of secondary mathematics curriculum materials. We explore in detail the challenges we have encountered in our attempts to apply principles from the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. We focus on tensions we have experienced when simultaneously applying multiple principles and balancing these with other educational considerations. Specifically, we consider trade-offs between redundancy versus clarity, seductive details versus richness, personalisation and emotional design versus abstraction, spatial contiguity and signalling versus parsimony, and pre-training and worked examples versus exploration. We examine the choices and dilemmas we faced, and illustrate our emerging attempts to resolve these tensions through presenting multiple examples from our design work. We conclude with recommendations about how tensions among these design principles might be navigated in curriculum design and we suggest possible avenues for further research in this area.

The present research conducted two experiments with an intelligent tutoring system to investigate the overall and dynamic impact of emotional support from a pedagogical agent (PA). In Experiment 1, a single factor intergroup design was used to explore the impact of PA's emotional support (supportive vs. non-supportive) on learners' emotions, intrinsic motivation, and learning gain. Sixty participants were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the two conditions. Experiment 2 also conducted a single factor between-subjects design to investigated the dynamic patterns between emotions and learning strategies among 30 participants using lag sequential analysis. Results showed that: Compared with the non-supportive pedagogical agent, the supportive pedagogical agent reduced frustration and improved learning gain, but did not increase intrinsic motivation. In addition, learners with the supportive pedagogical agent used more appropriate strategies after frustration and surprise, and use less ineffective strategies after confusion and enjoyment to avoid reaching a wrong answer. If learners did not receive emotional support in such cases, learning strategies following these emotions were more likely lead to negative cognitive results, or negative emotions tended to appear repeatedly. Instructors or PAs should identify learners' emotions in time and provide the appropriate emotional support according to learners' emotions.

Reading instruction is a key component of special education teacher preparation, with content traditionally delivered through lecture and assigned reading. Recent research investigated the potential for enhancing special education teacher preparation with technological modes of content delivery. This systematic literature review was conducted to explore the effect of multimedia interventions on preservice teachers' knowledge and skills for delivering reading instruction. Fourteen quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria established and were reviewed to identify the types of multimedia instruction employed, areas of reading instruction addressed, the measures of preservice teacher knowledge and skills used, and the alignment between instruction and theories of learning in the 14 studies. Findings indicate that technological interventions, such as Content Acquisition Podcasts and multimedia vignettes, yielded statistically significant gains in preservice teacher knowledge and skills for delivering reading instruction to students with disabilities when compared with traditional modes of instruction. Multimedia instruction developed with solid theoretical frameworks had increased efficacy, suggesting that individuals preparing future special educators may benefit from increased alignment with theories of learning. Additional implications for teacher education and future research are provided.

Gamification has a strong track record of improving student engagement and learning in the chemical sciences. Meta-analyses of different approaches to gamification have highlighted that providing a game fiction, encouraging students to work in teams, and breaking games into smaller "quests" are particularly effective. Here, we aimed to increase students' engagement and learning with four analytical biochemistry techniques (high-performance liquid chromatography, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Western blot, and mass spectrometry) by creating a game that required them to use every method to solve a "murder mystery". Our game was based on the popular games "Mafia" and "Among Us" and introduced an original game fiction relevant to our setting. Students attending the formative gamified session gave highly positive feedback. They indicated that they enjoyed the session and increased confidence in the methods involved. Free text comments praised many of the elements deliberately introduced into the game. To our surprise, the main criticism was that the session was not challenging enough. We developed a revised session that required students to undertake more detailed data interpretation, which students reported gave the expected increase in difficulty. All materials and code for running our session and generating new mysteries with original data are available online.

We present a showcase of our experience with videos complementing analytical chemistry lectures to familiarize undergraduate students with instrumental element analysis. This includes a detailed account of how we planned, produced, and utilized a video to review the course content at the end of the semester. The analytical case study focused on the determination of magnesium in two well water samples with emphasis on flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, while also comparing results with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and titration measurements. During the lecture, we engaged students by asking them for suggestions on how to carry out the measurements before showing the respective video sections. A survey among the students revealed a remarkably positive response to this approach. We demonstrate our video production approach by making decisions and choices from the video production, such as recording and editing, explicit and conclude with practical advice for planning and producing similar videos to visualize case studies.

Background: "Screen inferiority" refers to a well-established phenomenon observed among adults and teenagers, wherein they demonstrate higher reading comprehension when reading from paper compared to screens. However, there is limited research focusing on readers in the initial stages of reading development. The current study aims to investigate reading comprehension in both screen and paper settings, as well as modality preferences, among young typical and struggling readers in the second and third grades. Methods: The study included 342 second graders and 284 third-grade Hebrew readers. Their reading comprehension performance in both modalities and their preferences for a particular modality were assessed. Results: The results suggested no differences in reading comprehension between the two modalities in the second and third grades. The only group that showed numerically higher performance on paper over computer was struggling readers in the second grade. The numeric proportion of modality preferences was higher on the computer rather than on paper. Conclusions: The current study did not find an effect of modality on reading comprehension in the second and third grades. We did find that children in these grades prefer to read on screens. It is essential to examine the specific characteristics of the digital task to determine when it benefits young readers and when it may be detrimental to them.

Color has been investigated as a signaling cue in multimedia learning environments, guiding the learner's attention and as an emotional design element, increasing the learner's motivation and, thus, improving learning outcomes. Retrieval cues (e.g., visual cues, odor, sound) facilitating memory retrieval have been primarily investigated in learning simple word lists. Contrary to additional retrieval cues, the background color is a component that is always present in multimedia learning environments. This study investigates if the background color of learning texts as retrieval cue can enhance learning and affect cognitive load and motivation. Hypotheses are formulated according to the "Cognitive-Affective Theory of Learning with Multimedia" (CATLM) and in the setting of context-dependent memory, specifically the "Information, associated Context, and Ensemble Theory" (ICE). A 2 (related vs. unrelated background color) × 2 (with vs. without colors in the learning test) -factorial between-subjects design with an additional control group was utilized. For the control group, the background of the learning texts and learning questions was white. In total, 191 native German speakers were randomly assigned to the five groups. The findings indicate that relying solely on the background color as a retrieval cue is insufficient. Instead of facilitating memory retrieval, the background color remains context information stored separately from the item information. However, the results should be approached carefully as learning outcomes may be subject to ceiling and floor effects.

The study determined the relative effectiveness of simulation games, blended learning, and interactive multimedia in enhancing learning outcomes in Basic Science of pupils with varying abilities, with a view to providing information on the most effective strategy for instructing Basic Science among pupils with varying abilities. Children should be exposed to and commence learning science at a young age because science and technology are the dynamic forces behind present socioeconomic progress. The research design employed was a quasi-experimental research design. The experiment was conducted in six schools, and two schools were used as the control group. The analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics. Permission was sought from the Local Government Education Authorities (LGEA) to use the schools in their jurisdictions for the experiment. Participants were given a consent form for their parents. Pseudonyms were used to replace participants' names. The findings indicate that interactive multimedia is more effective with pupils in mainstream schools, whereas blended learning proves more effective for pupils in special schools. These findings imply that teachers should employ strategies to captivate and maintain attention while teaching Basic Science.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to digital learning materials have dramatically reduced the use of paper-based textbooks in higher education. In the field of engineering, students need a comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts, which can be achieved through the use of e-textbooks. These digital learning materials can provide a more comprehensive and effective learning experience by incorporating a variety of multimedia elements, such as audio, visual aids, and interactive features. Rationale/Relevance: Mathematics students are expected to possess critical problem-solving skills, yet they are rarely asked to elaborate on and explain their mathematical reasoning and concepts through written argument in the engineering mathematics classroom. While students may excel in formula manipulation, they may still possess misconceptions about mathematical principles and concepts. A reliance on mechanical and procedural approaches, such as formula application, without proper conceptual understanding can result in serious misunderstandings of mathematics and its real-world applications. Without the ability to reason about mathematical concepts, students may struggle to connect what they are learning in class with real-world scenarios, leading to difficulties in solving practical problems. It is, therefore, crucial to foster conceptual understanding and critical reasoning skills in mathematics education, rather than solely relying on memorisation, in order to equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in their careers. Research Problem/ Research Question: This study will answer the following research question:How effective are e-textbooks in promoting conceptual understanding of engineering mathematics? Aim of the Study/Focus: The purpose of this study is to investigate conceptual learning in engineering mathematics using an e-textbook as a learning tool. Methodology: This qualitative case study explores e-textbooks as adaptive technology, with functionalities that include artificial intelligence allowing students to develop their understanding by interacting with digital text, watching videos of real-world mathematics concepts, and responding to quick quizzes on concepts; as well as practising and mastering further mathematical principles and concepts. It focuses on first-year engineering students and lecturers at a University of Technology in South Africa. The analysis of interview recordings was done with ATLAS.ti. analytical software. Theoretical Framework: The data from this study was analyzed through the lenses of cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) and Vosniadou's notion of conceptual change, allowing the researchers to explain complex real-world situations that students experience when engaging with the e-textbook to solve mathematics problems. Recommendations: The work presented here has implications for future studies of conceptual learning in mathematics research and may provide opportunities around learning engineering mathematical concepts, particularly in the context of developing countries. This is because it offers novel instructional approaches that are tailored to the specific needs and challenges of these countries.

Using multimedia elements to present poetry can help make it more accessible and understandable to a broader audience. In the context of China, where poetry is important in culture and art, interpreting the poems of Chinese poets in contemporary music can help popularize their work among young audiences. The study aimed to explore the possibilities of using various multimedia tools to promote poetry in online educational blogs and to study the effectiveness of various multimedia tools in attracting audience attention to poetry. The survey results reveal the popularity of contemporary songs in China among the youth, who draw inspiration from poetry. "Green Light" ([foreign characters omitted]) received the highest percentage of votes, at 38%. This song centres on the theme of love and expresses the desire to be reunited with a loved one. "Raindrops on Banana Leaves" ([foreign characters omitted]) garnered 26% of the votes and conveys the beauty of nature after rain, emphasizing the appreciation of the world's beauty. "Nebula" ([foreign characters omitted]) was mentioned by 9% of the students, and this song includes lines from the poem "Love in the Sky" by Jiang Zhiqun. It explores themes of love and self-reflection, reflecting the desire to be with a loved one. "Crazy Heartbeats" ([foreign characters omitted]) received 18% of the votes, and the song uses phrases from the poem "Strong Feelings" by Junjian Lu. It portrays intense emotions, highlighting love and passion. "I Am by Your Side" ([foreign characters omitted]), a song containing lines from the eponymous poem by Zhongsan Lu, was chosen by 9% of the students. It revolves around the theme of love and the longing to be with someone special. These findings illustrate how contemporary music in China often intertwines with classical poetry, bridging the gap between traditional literary heritage and modern forms of cultural self-expression. The results of the statistical analysis indicate a statistically significant difference between the control and experimental groups regarding the impact of multimedia technologies on learning outcomes. The experiment has shown that these technologies contribute to better comprehension of the material and the attainment of higher scores compared to students who employed traditional teaching methods. Based on the study, conclusions can be drawn about the prospects of other processes related to this topic, namely the importance of using multimedia technologies to present poetry in online educational blogs, especially for interpreting poems by Chinese poets in modern Chinese music, such technologies will help to attract a wider audience and develop a person's creativity, linguistic culture, and sensual and aesthetic spheres. For further research, it will be essential to study the impact of multimedia technologies on the understanding and appreciation of Chinese poetry by students of different age groups and cultural backgrounds and to conduct a comparative analysis of various methods of interpreting Chinese poetry in multimedia format. The present findings can also be used to develop recommendations and practices for using multimedia technologies in education and cultural activities related to Chinese poetry and methods for applying multimedia technologies as the presentation of poetry in online blogs.

Previous research showed that the parents acknowledged the technology's benefits for their young children's learning, however, they are still worried about the extended screen time, lack of physical activity and lack of social interactions. To address these concerns, we developed Kid Space to enable pedagogically appropriate technology use for children in early childhood education by combining various sensing technologies with a multi-modal conversational artificial intelligence system that can interact with children, understand individual progress and provide personalised learning experiences. To understand the impact of Kid Space on the parents' initial concerns about technology use by their young children, we conducted a multi-method user study: (1) a quasi-experimental design and (2) formative research method using an exploratory case study with a set of children and their parents experiencing Kid Space in their homes. The results show that after experiencing Kid Space with their children, the parents felt significantly less concerned about screen time, social interactions and physical activity and reported positive perceptions towards pedagogical value of Kid Space. Detailed analysis on the multi-modal data quantitatively and qualitatively validated why Kid Space alleviated these concerns. Future research is needed to validate long-term educational value of Kid Space and generate insights for improvement for next iterations.

The cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML) describes a set of empirically tested principles that technical and professional communication research largely acknowledges as important to the design of presentation slides. However, presenters often run into difficulties understanding how to apply CTML principles to contexts in which it has not been tested. We present three pilot studies that extend our knowledge of how to apply CTML principles. Pilot study one suggests that CTML principles can be effective for presenting advanced research to expert audiences. Pilot study two highlights the importance of user testing nonessential images added primarily for visual interest, specifically finding that visual organizer images such as Microsoft PowerPoint's SmartArt, can backfire by unintentionally indicating imprecise relationships while adding little in terms of visual interest. Pilot study three suggests that, when needing to present a long quotation, presenters should avoid verbatim reading and consider abridging or paraphrasing the quotation.

In multimedia learning, there is a lot of new information that learners are exposed to, making it a cognitively intensive process. Poorly-designed multimedia lessons can introduce distractions that must be dealt with by the learner. However, learners do not all share the same skill at managing incoming information or holding capacity, which could create individual differences in the impact of multimedia lessons on learning and lead to inequity in learning. In three experiments, learners saw a multimedia lesson varying in the amount of distracting material included: high (Experiment 1), moderate (Experiment 2), or low (Experiment 3). Learners took a posttest and completed tasks to assess individual differences in managing incoming information (executive function) and holding capacity (working memory capacity). When distractions were present (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2), executive function was related to posttest performance such that as executive functioning increased, performance on the posttest increased. However, when distractions were not present (Experiment 3), executive function was not related to posttest performance. Individual differences in working memory capacity were not related to posttest performance at any level of distraction. This indicates the importance of considering individual differences in learners' executive functioning in the design of multimedia lessons.

As an important resource in online learning, video lectures have attracted considerable research attention in the impact of teachers' nonverbal guidance behaviors on learning. However, few studies have focused on secondary education, and it remains unclear whether the interaction between different guidance frequencies and types leads to variations in the effectiveness of guidance. This study tested the mutual effects of instructor's guidance frequency and type on secondary school students' learning performance (retention scores, transfer scores) and affective experiences (cognitive load, learning experience, learning satisfaction). A total of 202 secondary school students were randomly assigned to watch one of the four video lectures, using a 2 (guidance frequency: low-frequency guidance, high-frequency guidance) × 2 (guidance type: gesture guidance, gesture + gaze guidance) between-groups design. The study was conducted in a multimedia classroom setting. The results showed that low-frequency guidance by instructors contributed to improved learning performance. Specifically, under low-frequency guidance conditions, gesture guidance was more effective in enhancing retention, while gesture + gaze guidance facilitated learners' transfer. Moreover, low-frequency gesture + gaze guidance by teachers resulted in better affective experiences for students, as evident in cognitive load, learning experience, and learning satisfaction. Therefore, it is recommended that instructors lecturing for secondary students adopt appropriate types of low-frequency guidance according to the level of learning difficulty to improve teaching effectiveness.

Educators are tasked with continually updating course objectives, content, assignments, and assessment to meet model curriculum guidelines. IS2020 proposes program level outcomes for required and elective areas. Two elective areas in IS2020 are Data and Business Analytics and Data and Information Visualization. IS2020 details 14 program level competencies (organized within knowledge elements and skills) that are then integrated into individual course-level design. This work presents a set of laboratory exercises to fulfill the competencies of both elective areas. The set of exercises have been taught in the classroom over several years and have been refined to evaluate coverage of the 14 program competencies. The exercises begin with step-by-step tutorials that build student capabilities with software. Advanced exercises propose open challenges to solve. These resources provide IS programs with a draft of potential exercises to include in courses and a framework for covering program-level objectives.

The use of digital technologies as a support to the learning process may contribute to a more dynamic and participatory way of developing knowledge. Transmedia narratives assume characteristics congruent with this by facilitating the incorporation of educational methodologies that foster learning skills in interaction with digital devices during the exploration of a narrative. Simultaneously, in the case of mathematics, many students interpret the subject without connecting it to their social context and, therefore, do not understand its applicability and usefulness in the real world. This article presents a literature review related to these concepts and their interplay in mathematics learning. An integrative literature review was performed following five steps to collect evidence: (1) formulation of the review question; (2) search, screening and selection (sampling) of information; (3) critical evaluation of the selected information (data collection); (4a) data extraction (data analysis); (4b) synthesis of the extracted data and thematic analysis; and (5) presentation of data. It was found that the practices of teachers as orchestrators and facilitators of learning and the impact of transmedia narratives in the attempt to motivate students draw them closer to the mathematics subjects explored in classes. Prior research suggests that the use of multimedia instruction along with video modeling increases the ability of individuals with intellectual disability (ID) to independently complete tasks. However, the previous research has not always included instruction of the underlying vocabulary, nor has it always resulted in skill maintenance. The purpose of the current study was to compare the effectiveness of multimedia instruction using video modeling to teach pedestrian safety signs to participants with ID to support skills needed for community. The effectiveness of the multimedia intervention was measured using a randomized control trial utilizing a pre-/posttest design. Participants' knowledge grew significantly from pre-to posttest, and there were no significant differences between the groups. Current results are similar to prior research findings indicating multimedia instruction is effective in teaching skill acquisition. We discuss practical implications of these findings as well as future research on teaching pedestrian safety to postsecondary individuals with ID.

English language education nowadays is not merely about the instruction and acquisition of linguistic knowledge and skills. Instead, it has progressed to the real-life applications of the target language, which further requires a mastery of cultural knowledge and skills. In terms of culture, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, compared to native speakers of English, own their unique native culture. Yet, since language teachers tend to focus on the delivery of English cultural knowledge, EFL learners' native culture is sometimes shadowed in the mainstream English classrooms worldwide. To this end, this exploratory paper aims to advocate attention to the importance of EFL learners' native culture awareness and share some practical teaching and learning experiences in an English course called "Multimedia and Foreign Language Learning." The paper outlines the pedagogical design of the course in China, providing classroom examples and practical suggestions to course designers, educators and instructors. We expect to give insights into integrating native culture into foreign language education in university settings.

Military Families and the Arts is an ArcGIS StoryMaps collection that serves military families by mapping art museums and arts centers located near active-duty military installations. The interactive maps are organized by military branch and browsable by an alphabetical list of active-duty military installations. The ArcGIS StoryMaps collection serves three primary functions: to assist military spouses pursuing a career in the arts with finding a comprehensive list of potential employers, to assist military dependents with finding arts-related opportunities to network into their current or new communities, and to assist military families with finding art-related activities near their military installation in the continental United States.

The rise of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) threatens to upend traditional teaching and learning practices. Writing, speaking, and communication instruction will all need to evolve. This article presents a case study of one institution's efforts to design and implement a communication curriculum responsive to the unique demands of the EMI environment. The curriculum proposed enacts an interdisciplinary, multimodal approach to the teaching of communication. We discuss the specifics of the curriculum, the process of its creation, the principles underlying it, and how these principles play out in practice. In doing so, we hope to provide a model both for global communication instruction and future curricular design efforts.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional and active lecture methods in higher-education courses. A multiple group convergent parallel mixed method design was used, with measurement of learning, attention, and student preference for active or traditional lecture methods. Six faculty at a public university in the northeast region of the United States engaged 178 undergraduate and graduate students in a traditional lecture session and an active lecture session during the Spring 2022 semester. Results indicated effectiveness of active and traditional lecture approaches (p < 0.05). Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data in the study provides additional information regarding student preference for active lecture based on perceptions of increased learning benefits, interaction/engagement, attention, activities, discussion, and the use of multimedia. In implementing both traditional and active lecture sessions this study employed pre-lecture and post-lecture quizzes that students found to be very beneficial to learning.

Poor mathematics performance was generally reported from international assessments such as Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) among Malaysian students. Malaysia is ranked 52nd and 48th in the assessments for 2012 and 2018 respectively, while Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and even Vietnam have consistently performed well and held the top spots among the 78 countries evaluated in the PISA. Although numerous new technologies have been introduced, developed and implemented for education, incorporation of IT capability (ITC) to teach and learn Mathematics where still lacking commonly. Additionally, learning Mathematics in the traditional teaching contents could not accomplish desired learning outcomes because of dry contents and dull teachers. Therefore, this study is to design an appropriate ITC framework for improving learning experience and academic achievement of learning Mathematics. This study has adopted the development model of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) and Mayer (2010)'s cognitive theory for multimedia instructional content design. This study developed a new Multimedia Probability and Statistics system (MMPASS) for a subject of Probability and Statistics. The developed topics were concepts of discrete random variables and probability distribution function which were puzzled by students from preliminary study. An experiment was conducted with both control and experimental groups. The developed MMPASS blended multiple influential multimedia elements in the learning contents. A quantitative method and proportional stratified sampling were used to collect data. The blended topics were used by the experimental group whilst the control group was solely learning using the existing learning contents. Questionnaires were distributed to both groups after the lessons. 66 students participated in this survey. The collected data was then analysed and an ITC model was formed. Results of this study show that Perceived System Quality, Perceived Information Content Quality and Perceived System Performance as independent variables significantly improved learning experience. The findings also reveal that the performances of the experimental group have a higher mean score (9.65/10.00) compared to the control group (8.03/10.00), indicating the use of MMPASS improved students' learning performance in subjects that involve understanding of concepts. While there is a lack of established ITC framework and IT application for Mathematics education in Malaysia, this study has verified the use of ITC improving performance of learning Mathematics in Malaysia.

Transmedia storytelling has the potential to be an effective approach for non-formal education. Previous research has suggested that there may be a reciprocal relationship between transmedia storytelling and the characteristics of non-formal learners. However, there is limited literature on how to structure and design educational processes using this approach in nonformal settings, and even less literature that integrates the perspectives of stakeholders on the necessary components for instructional design. To address this gap, a qualitative analysis of multiformat focus groups was conducted to describe the necessary items to be considered when developing transmedia educational process (TEP) in non-formal educational proposals when these are designed to families, children, and/or adolescents. Based on the findings, seven important levels were identified for instructional designing of TEPs: level of intentions (1), level of facilitators' indications (2), level of participants' needs (3), level of narrative integrations (4), level of elaboration and production (5), level of means and technological/physical support (6), and level of sharing willingness (7). The study discusses the importance to consider multiple perspectives, including those of facilitators, children and adolescents, and parents, when designing TEPs. Additionally, it is important to use a variety of media platforms, formats, and channels to engage diverse and heterogeneous groups of participants in non-formal educational settings. Further research could focus on developing and validating tools and strategies to guide instructional design in these types of educational processes.

In spite of its increasing popularity, distance education faces challenges -- levels of digital literacy, access to technology, workload and time management, students' feelings of isolation and disconnection -- that can have a significant impact on the experience of the learners. In addressing these issues, we propose a pedagogical model for distance learning which promotes the synergy of eight ingredients -- Community, Openness, Multimodality, Participation, Personalisation, Learning, Experience, Technological-Enhancement, with their initial letters generating the acronym COMP-PLETE -- for the shaping of a highly participatory online learning experience and the creation of an active and cohesive community characterised by a strong sense of commitment towards the learning of the individuals and that of the group. This paper presents the theoretical rationale for and implementation of COMP-PLETE. It also provides recommendations for researchers and practitioners interested in cultivating an online learning community which responds well to the aforementioned challenges posed by distance education.
