In the last decades, many efforts have been made to understand how different tropical oceanic basins are able to impact El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). However, the collective connectivity among the tropical oceans and their associated influence on ENSO are less understood. Using a complex network methodology, the degree of collective connectivity among the tropical oceans is analyzed focusing on the detection of periods when the tropical basins collectively interact and the Atlantic and Indian basins influence the equatorial Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs). The background state for the periods of strong collective connectivity is also investigated. Our results show a marked multidecadal variability in the tropical interbasin connection, with periods of stronger and weaker collective connectivity. These changes seem to be modulated by changes in the North Atlantic Ocean mean state a decade in advance. In particular, strong connectivity occurs in periods with colder than average tropical North Atlantic surface ocean. Associated with this cooling, an anomalous convergence of the vertical integral of total energy flux (VIEF) takes place over the tropical north–west Atlantic, associated with anomalous divergence of VIEF over the equatorial eastern Pacific. In turn, an anomalous zonal surface pressure gradient over the tropical Pacific weakens the trades over the western equatorial Pacific. Consequently, a shallower thermocline emerges over the western equatorial Pacific, which can enhance thermocline feedbacks, the triggering of ENSO events, and therefore, ENSO variability. By construction, our results put forward opposite conditions for periods of weak tropical basin connectivity. These results have important implications for seasonal to decadal predictions. Utilizing ensemble hindcast data from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) spanning the years 1900–2014, the multidecadal changes in the seasonal potential predictability of the winter Pacific–North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern and associated circulation anomalies have been investigated by using an information-based metric of relative entropy and the method of the most predictable component analysis. Results show that the seasonal potential predictability of winter PNA has significant multidecadal changes, with values much higher at the two ends of the twentieth century and much lower in between particularly in the 1930s and 1940s. The changes in the seasonal potential predictability of winter PNA are mostly reflected by the temporal evolutions of PNA rather than the location changes of active centers. Further, the changes are mostly contributed by the external forcing of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related sea surface temperature anomalies in tropical central and eastern Pacific. In particular, the combined effects of lower amplitudes, reduced persistence, and a more eastward shift in warming centers lead to the reduced seasonal potential predictability of PNA and associated circulation changes in the 1930s and 1940s. Significance Statement: Seasonal prediction of the winter Pacific–North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern and associated circulation anomalies is very important due to its profound climate impacts. Understanding the multidecadal fluctuations and its driving sources of the potential predictability of winter PNA and associated circulation anomalies are meaningful for skillful seasonal prediction of winter PNA and circulation anomalies as well as related climate variations. This study for the first time shows that the multidecadal fluctuations of the potential predictability of winter PNA are quite significant and the changes are mostly reflected by its temporal evolutions rather than spatial shifts of active centers. Furthermore, this study shows that the strength, persistence, and warming center locations of ENSO-related sea surface temperatures in tropical Pacific play a crucial role on the multidecadal changes of the potential predictability of winter PNA and associated circulation anomalies. The Sea of Okhotsk is a marginal sea that plays a major role in the ventilation of the North Pacific, being the key location where Dense Shelf Water (DSW) forms at the surface and sinks to the intermediate layer. The Okhotsk Sea Intermediate Water (OSIW) is a key water mass because it includes large amounts of DSW, outflows to the North Pacific, and supplies the ocean with the micronutrient iron. OSIW has been warming over the past few decades, which is attributed to a decreasing trend in DSW production. The acquisition of numerous hydrographic data after 2000 in the Kuril Basin, especially dissolved oxygen from profiling floats, offers an opportunity to better quantify the water mass composition of OSIW, and the changes in OSIW properties and DSW volume. Here, we used all available hydrographic records and a mapping technique specially adapted to polar and sub‐polar regions to revisit the Sea of Okhotsk water properties and document their long‐term changes. Our analysis revealed that the volume of heavier DSW (potential density above 26.9 kg.m−3) has decreased over the past three decades by 3,600 km3, or 15% of the volume present before 1990. This decline is nearly entirely compensated for by an increase in lighter DSW. This shift toward lighter DSW is possibly a sign of the weakening of the intermediate overturning circulation starting in the Okhotsk Sea. Additionally, we found that dense Soya Current Water only accounts for about 1% of OSIW, against the 5% previously estimated. Plain Language Summary: The water of the Sea of Okhotsk is a mix of several water masses which includes the Dense Shelf Water (DSW), a water mass generated in winter via sea ice formation. When sea ice forms, the surface water salinity and density increase, and the cold DSW is generated as the surface water sinks to the bottom of the continental shelf while micronutrients, especially iron, are also incorporated. DSW mixes with other water masses and becomes the Okhotsk Sea Intermediate Water (OSIW) before being exported to the North Pacific where it plays an important role for both the climate and the biological productivity. In this study, we used all the temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen data acquired since 1930 to evaluate how global warming may have affected the composition of OSIW. We found that, over the past century, the amount of denser DSW has strongly decreased whereas that of lighter DSW has increased, which is consistent with the decline in sea ice production in the Sea of Okhotsk. This also suggests that the ventilation of the Sea of Okhotsk and the circulation of the intermediate layer of the North Pacific is weakening, which could indirectly affect the ocean's biological productivity. The Two-Component Extreme Value (TCEV) distribution is traditionally known as the exact distribution of extremes arising from Poissonian occurrence of a mixture of two exponential exceedances. In some regions, flood frequency is affected by low-frequency (decadal) climate fluctuations resulting in wet and dry epochs. We extend the exact distribution of extremes approach to such regions to show that the TCEV arises as the distribution of annual maximum floods for Poissonian occurrences and (at least two) exponential exceedances. A case study using coastal basins in Queensland and New South Wales (Australia) affected by low-frequency climate variability, shows that the TCEV produces good fits to the marginal distribution over the entire range of observed values without the explicit need to resort to climate covariates and removal of potentially influential low values. Moreover, the TCEV reproduces the observed dog-leg, a key signature of different flood generation processes. A literature review shows that the assumptions underpinning the TCEV are conceptually consistent with available evidence on climate and flood mechanisms in these basins. We provide an extended domain of the TCEV distribution in the L-moment ratio diagram to account for the wider range of parameter values encountered in the case study and show that for all basins, L-skew and L-kurtosis fall within the extended domain of the TCEV. The seasonal variability of precipitation has a profound impact on water demand for India's agricultural and socio‐economic sectors which are associated with continental and surrounding oceanic moisture sources controlled by dynamic and thermodynamic processes. In this study, moisture sources have been tracked by the Lagrangian trajectory approach over four homogeneous regions: Northwest India (NWI), Central India (CEI), Northeast India (NEI) and South Peninsular India (SPI). ERA‐Interim reanalysis data are used throughout the study for three decades from 1989 to 2018. The results indicate that the multidecadal variability of precipitation has strengthened towards the mid‐decade (1999–2008), mainly attributable to moisture source transport from the Arabian Sea. These enhancement patterns of moisture sources have been widespread over Central India for all three decades. Moisture availability in the boundary layer highly affects the precipitation and it is found that 80% of the moisture above the boundary layer contributes >10% of monsoonal precipitation occurrences. Further, the NEI drying trend in monsoonal rainfall is found to be related to the consequent weakening of the land–ocean temperature gradient (LOTG) during all three decades in this region and the absence of low cloud cover over the region throughout the study period. In addition, the moisture sources are regulated by prevailing large‐scale features such as frequency of La Niña, northward shifting of low‐level jet and strengthening of Hadley cell. Multidecadal variability of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is crucial for the Indo-Pacific and global climate due to significant interbasin exchanges of heat and freshwater. Previous studies suggest that both wind and buoyancy forcing may drive ITF variability, but the role of precipitation and salinity effect in the variability of ITF on multidecadal time scales remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the multidecadal changes and long-term trend of the ITF transport during the past six decades, with a focus on the role of precipitation and salinity effect. The diverse datasets consistently indicate a substantial upward trend in the halosteric component of geostrophic transport of ITF in the outflow region at 114°E during the six decades. We find that the meridional differences of the salinity trend in the outflow region explain the increasing trend of the halosteric component of ITF transport. On a larger scale, the tropical western Pacific Ocean and Indonesian seas have experienced significant freshening, which has strengthened the Indo-Pacific pressure gradient and thus enhanced the ITF. In contrast, the equatorial trade wind in the western Pacific Ocean has weakened over recent decades, implying that changes in wind forcing have contributed to weakening the ITF. The combined effect of strengthened halosteric and weakened thermosteric components has resulted in a weak strengthening for the total ITF with large uncertainties. Although both the thermosteric and halosteric components are associated with natural climate modes, our results suggest that the importance of salinity effect is likely increasing given the enhanced water cycle under global warming. Snow cover provides distinct seasonal controls on the exchange of energy between Earth's surface and atmosphere, and on hydrologic cycling, and holds considerable importance to communities and ecosystems worldwide. In this work, we tackle a comprehensive review of existing snow classification approaches and the development of new globally applicable snow cover–based rules for delineating snow seasonality classes. Snow classification rules are defined using machine learning approaches, which are then applied to the 22-yr record of snow cover (2000–22) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on a 0.01° global grid. For the MODIS period of record, we find the global land surface can be effectively partitioned into five snow seasonality classes: no snow, ephemeral, transitional, seasonal, and perennial snow regimes which on average cover extents of approximately 76 (52% of global land areas), 19 (13%), 16 (11%), 18 (13%), and 16 million km2 (11%), respectively. Using the multidecadal dataset, we explore changes within snow regimes and find significant increases in the areal extent of no snow (approximately +70 000 km2 yr−1) as well as apparent losses in perennial (−3600 km2 yr−1) and seasonal snow regime coverage (−38 000 km2 yr−1). The resulting classification maps have strong agreement with in situ snow depth observations and present similar patterns to existing snow and climate classifications with notable discrepancies in cold arid regions. The framework's ability to accurately capture variations in snow persistence, snow accumulation, and melt cycling is shown, providing a reference to the current state of global snow seasonality. Significance Statement: Following a review of existing snow classification approaches, this study focuses on improving our understanding of snow-cover variability on Earth by using satellite-based observations of snow-covered area to derive a new snow classification. Satellite observations provide the best means of measuring snow cover at a global scale, helping to identify regions where its influence on energy, water, and climate is changing. The results are compared to existing climate and snow summaries, ground observations of snow depth, and include trends in snow cover over recent decades (2000–22). AbstractThe Arctic seasonal halocline impacts the exchange of heat, energy, and nutrients between the surface and the deeper ocean, and it is changing in response to Arctic sea ice melt over the past several decades. Here, we assess seasonal halocline formation in 1975 and 2006–12 by comparing daily, May–September, salinity profiles collected in the Canada Basin under sea ice. We evaluate differences between the two time periods using a one-dimensional (1D) bulk model to quantify differences in freshwater input and vertical mixing. The 1D metrics indicate that two separate factors contribute similarly to stronger stratification in 2006–12 relative to 1975: 1) larger surface freshwater input and 2) less vertical mixing of that freshwater. The larger freshwater input is mainly important in August–September, consistent with a longer melt season in recent years. The reduced vertical mixing is mainly important from June until mid-August, when similar levels of freshwater input in 1975 and 2006–12 are mixed over a different depth range, resulting in different stratification. These results imply that decadal changes to ice–ocean dynamics, in addition to freshwater input, significantly contribute to the stronger seasonal stratification in 2006–12 relative to 1975. These findings highlight the need for near-surface process studies to elucidate the impact of lateral processes and ice–ocean momentum exchange on vertical mixing. Moreover, the results may provide insight for improving the representation of decadal changes to Arctic upper-ocean stratification in climate models that do not capture decadal changes to vertical mixing.

Air–sea coupling system in the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO; 35°–55°S, 40°–75°E) exhibits predominant multidecadal variability that is the strongest during austral summer. It is characterized by an equivalent barotropic atmospheric high (low) pressure over warm (cold) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and a poleward (equatorward) shift of the westerlies during the positive (negative) phase. In this study, physical processes of this multidecadal variability are investigated by using observations/reanalysis and CMIP6 model simulations. Results suggest that the multidecadal fluctuation can be explained by the modulation of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and the local air–sea positive feedback in the SWIO. In both observations/reanalysis and CMIP6 model simulations, the AMOC fluctuation presents a significantly negative correlation with the multidecadal SST variation in the SWIO when the AMOC is leading by about a decade. The mechanisms are that the preceding AMOC variation can cause an interhemispheric dipolar pattern of SST anomalies in the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently, the SST anomalies in the midlatitudes of the South Atlantic can propagate to the SWIO by the oceanic Rossby wave under the influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Once the SST anomalies reach the SWIO, these SST anomalies in the oceanic front can affect the baroclinicity in the lower troposphere to influence the synoptic transient eddy and then cause the atmospheric circulation anomaly via the eddy–mean flow interaction. Subsequently, the anomalous atmospheric circulation over the SWIO can significantly strengthen the SST anomalies through modifying the oceanic meridional temperature advection and latent and sensible heat flux. Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) has long been thought to be an expression of low-frequency variability in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). However, alternative hypotheses have been forwarded, including that AMV is primarily externally forced. Here, we review the current state of play by assessing historical simulations made for the sixth coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6). Overall, the importance of external forcing is sensitive to the type of AMV index used, due to the importance of globally coherent externally forced signals in the models. There are also significant contrasts between the processes that drive internally and externally forced AMV, but these processes can be isolated by exploring the multivariate expression of AMV. Specifically, internal variability in CMIP6 models is consistent with an important role of ocean circulation and AMOC and the externally forced AMV is largely a surface-flux forced mechanism with little role for the ocean. Overall, the internal multivariate fingerprint of AMV is similar to the observed, but the externally forced fingerprint appears inconsistent with observations. Therefore, climate models still suggest a key role for ocean dynamics, and specifically AMOC, in observed AMV. Nevertheless, models remain deficient in a number of areas, and a stronger role for externally forced dynamical changes cannot be ruled out. The summer surface air temperatures (SAT) over Eurasia exhibit a non‐uniform multidecadal pattern since the 1990s, with amplified warming over Europe–West Asia (EWA) and Northeast Asia (NEA) but weak warming over Central Asia. However, current climate models may inadequately capture this regional pattern. In this study, we evaluated the performance of 44 coupled models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) in simulating the decadal variability of Eurasian temperatures. Results show that all the CMIP6 models generally reproduce the largest SAT trends from 1985 to 2020 over EWA and NEA. However, the models fail to capture the non‐uniform warming pattern and the SAT magnitudes are underestimated in most CMIP6 models. We compare "good" and "poor" ensemble, which represent the best and worst simulations of the non‐uniform warming, in order to understand the inter‐model spread. The BMME models capture the teleconnection wave trains from northwest Europe to East Asia, and the associated summer North Atlantic Oscillation like circulation changes. In contrast, the WMME models fail to reproduce such teleconnections. The contrast between the BMME and WMME simulations give a measure of confidence that the non‐uniform warming pattern over Eurasia is tightly coupled with the upper‐tropospheric wave‐like pattern over Eurasia. If such atmospheric circulation changes cannot be reproduced, the non‐uniform warming pattern over Eurasia will not be captured. Our results suggest a fundamental pattern of atmospheric circulation changes that determine the non‐uniform warming variations in model simulations. Whether Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate models are able to adequately reproduce this non‐uniform pattern remain unknown. Here we quantitatively evaluated the performance of 44 CMIP6 models in simulating the summer surface air temperatures decadal variations over Eurasia since 1950 and further investigated the key factors in causing the differences in the simulation ability among the models. Our results show that a good performance of the model is closely related to its ability in simulating the Silk Road Pattern, which can induce the intrinsic teleconnection wave trains, causing the anticyclonic circulations around EWA and NEA, and increase warm advection and downward shortwave radiation, leading to amplified warming there. Our findings provide a perspective of physical linkage to understand the model uncertainty in simulating the non‐uniform multidecadal pattern over Eurasia. This study investigates the influence of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) on the multidecadal variability of winter surface air temperature in arid central Asia (ACASAT). Apart from a long-term warming trend, the observational analysis shows that the winter ACASAT exhibits a significant multidecadal variability, which is characterized by antiphase fluctuations with the AMO. The mechanism for this negative correlation between the AMO and the winter ACASAT is explored from the aspect of wave teleconnection. The AMO provides energy for the Scandinavian teleconnection pattern at middle and low altitudes by regulating the high-altitude wave train over the middle and high latitudes of Eurasia, and thus has an impact on the remote climate in arid central Asia. Results from the linear baroclinic model (LBM) provide evidence for the linkage between the AMO and the Scandinavian teleconnection pattern. When the AMO is in its warm periods, the Scandinavian teleconnection pattern is in a positive phase, which further makes the cold air from the northeast strengthen, leading to the anomalously colder surface air temperature in arid central Asia. Based on the relationship that the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) leads the AMO by 15–20 years, it is further found that there is a leading relationship between the NAO and the winter ACASAT via the AMO. On this basis, an empirical model using the NAO as a predictor was established to predict the ACASAT, and the empirical model shows good hindcast performance. Tropical cyclone (TC) translation speed (TCS) over the western North Pacific (WNP) has experienced a long-term decreasing trend. To date, however, little is known about the multidecadal variability of TCS and its possible influence on this trend. This study investigated the multidecadal variability of the WNP TCS and the underlying physical mechanisms. Results show that the WNP TCS presents robust multidecadal variability during the past seven decades, which is dominated by the TCS over the extratropics. Further analysis shows that the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) is responsible for the TCS multidecadal variability. AMO positive (negative) phases lead to favorable (unfavorable) large-scale environmental conditions for maintaining TCs over the extratropics, which results in longer (shorter) residence time for TCs having been accelerated by the midlatitude westerlies, thus, leading to higher (lower) TCS. The TCS phase shift strongly offsets its slowdown trend, leading to the inconsistent trends during past decades. This inconsistency may also relate to the influence of extratropical transitioned cyclones without being totally excluded. These cyclones may be inhomogeneously recorded due to the absence of satellite observation before the 1980s. Our results indicate that internal variation such as AMO may dominate TCS low-frequency variations over the past several decades. Previous studies have attributed the inconsistent trends of TCS during different subperiods to data inhomogeneity. Water mass transformation in the Nordic Seas and the associated overflow of dense waters across the Greenland‐Scotland Ridge (GSR) acts to maintain the lower limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Here, we use ocean and atmospheric reanalysis to assess the temporal variability in the Nordic Seas overturning circulation between 1950 and 2020 and its relation to surface buoyancy forcing. We find that variable surface‐forced transformation of Atlantic waters in the eastern Nordic Seas can explain variations in overflow transport across the GSR. The production of dense water masses in the Greenland and Iceland Seas is of minor importance to overflow variability. The Nordic Seas overturning circulation shows pronounced multidecadal variability that is in phase with the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) index, but no long‐term trend. As the AMV is currently transitioning into its negative phase, the next decades could see a decreased overflow from the Nordic Seas. Although influences of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) and atmospheric heat source over the Tibetan Plateau (TPHS) on the East Asian summer rainfall (EASR) have been previously investigated, the relationship between the AMV and TPHS and their synergistic impact on the EASR are still unclear. We investigate the distinct relationship between the AMV and TPHS, and the role of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the impact of AMV on the EASR in this study. Results show that the AMV exerts a remote effect on the EASR through an atmospheric teleconnection, and the TP serves as a booster of this remote effect. The warming of the North Atlantic (positive phase of AMV) enhances the Asian summer monsoon through a zonal wave train along the northern midlatitudes, yielding an anomalous tripole rainfall pattern over East Asia. The enhanced warm and moist monsoon airflow converges and climbs up along the southern and eastern flanks of the TP, resulting in stronger latent heating over the TP than over other regions along the same latitude, due to the orographic effect of the huge plateau. The enhanced TPHS, in turn, further strengthens the summer monsoon and the East Asian tripole rainfall pattern by exciting a downstream meridional wave train. When the AMV and TPHS are in phase, the zonal wave train originating from the North Atlantic is strong and propagates eastward to the Asia-Pacific regions, significantly regulating the East Asian summer monsoon. An improved understanding of how the climate mean-state variation modulates MJO property is key to comprehending projected MJO's future change. After 1999, the Pacific shows a mega La Niña-like cooling, enhancing mean precipitation and MJO variability over the Maritime Continent and the northern Indo-Pacific warmpool. However, how the 1999 shift changed MJO propagation has not been studied. This study has detected significant changes in MJO propagation diversity across the 1999 climate shift. From epoch period 1 (P1; 1979-98) to P2 (1999-2018), the number of standing oscillation (SO) events has doubled, but the fast eastward-propagating (fast) events have decreased by 42%, the slow eastward-propagating events have increased by 150%, and the zonal extents of the MJO propagation have shifted westward by 108-208 of longitude. The SO (fast) events are often associated with a La Niña-like (El Niño-like) mean state. Therefore, the La Niña-like mean-state change associated with the 1999 climate shift has increased the chance for more SO but fewer fast events. The La Niña-like mean-state shift has also promoted the slow-propagating events from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific (WP) by increasing moisture content, convective instability, low-level convergence, and upward transport moisture over the equatorial WP. The results imply that the future change of the MJO propagation would critically depend on how the anthropogenic forcing changes the Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature pattern, especially an El Niño-like or La Niña-like warming pattern. The wintertime multidecadal land precipitation (WMLP) variability is obtained using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and then the leading spatial pattern and temporal evolution of the WMLP in the northern hemisphere during the period of 1891–2014 are investigated. The time series shows a pronounced enhancement of the variability since the mid‐1970s, coincident with the 1976/1977 climate transition, with the variance increasing from 0.33 in the former period (P1) to 2.57 in the latter period (P2). The spatial structure in P2 resembles that in the entire period. The precipitation anomaly is positive in the North America between 30° and 50°N, South America and southern Europe; while it is negative in the southern North America, majority of Russia, Arabian Peninsula, Iran and South China. However, the spatial pattern in P1 differs from the entire period. An Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO)‐like sea surface temperature (SST) variability in cold phase and an Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO)‐like SST variability in warm phase are associated with the leading mode of WMLP in P2 and the entire period. Yet, the relationship of IPO and AMO on the WMLP is barely found in P1. The in‐phase change of IPO and AMO in P1 may contribute to the smaller amplitude of WMLP variability in P1. In the end, the coupled models from CMIP6 historical runs are evaluated. The good‐models average is superior to any single good model in capturing the observed spatial features of WMLP in both P1 and P2. The poor‐models average performs better than any single poor model. The North Pacific Subtropical Fronts (STFs), accompanied by the eastward-flowing subtropical counter-current, stretch from the western Pacific Ocean to the north of Hawaii. Previous work has detected different trends of the frontal position and strength between the western STF (WSTF; west of 180°) and the eastern STF (ESTF; east of 180°) in the past 40 years. However, whether the basin-scale STFs have zonally asymmetric variability on multidecadal time scales and what drives that change remain to be quantified. Our recent work has shown that the multidecadal variability of the WSTF is controlled by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation via the subtropical mode water variability. The present study proposes that the variability of ESTF is modulated by the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) via the central mode water (CMW) variability, quasi synchronously on multidecadal time scales. During a PDO positive phase, the enhanced midlatitude westerly winds in the central North Pacific increase the local surface buoyancy loss and deepen the winter mixed layer, which enlarges the CMW formation and thus increases its volume. Meanwhile, accompanied by the southward-migrated outcropping zone, the main body of CMW shifts equatorward. In response to such CMW changes, the ESTF strengthens and shifts equatorward correspondingly. Conversely, during a PDO negative phase, the weakened midlatitude westerly winds in the central North Pacific decrease the local surface buoyancy loss and shallow the winter mixed layer, which reduces the CMW formation and thus decreases its volume. Meanwhile, accompanied by northward-migrated outcropping zone, the main body of CMW shifts poleward. In response to such CMW changes, the ESTF weakens and shifts poleward correspondingly. Our results reveal that the dominant factor controlling the low-frequency variability of the WSTF and ESTF is different, which renews the conventional picture that all of the STFs behave symmetrically, with important implications for the North Pacific climate variability. Observations, theoretical analyses, and climate models show that the dominant timescale of multidecadal variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is related to westward temperature propagations in the subpolar North Atlantic, which is modulated by oceanic baroclinic Rossby waves or thermal Rossby waves. Here, we find major timescales of AMOC variability of 12–28 years and associated westward temperature propagations in the preindustrial simulations of 9 CMIP6/CMIP5 models. The comparison with observations shows that the models reasonably simulate ocean stratifications and baroclinic Rossby waves in the subpolar North Atlantic. The timescale of the oceanic baroclinic Rossby wave propagating on a static background across the basin overestimates the major timescale of AMOC variability. The dual effects of the mean flow on the AMOC timescale are then considered, involving the eastward advection and the additional westward propagation (i.e., thermal Rossby wave) induced by the northward mean potential vorticity gradient. We find that the AMOC major timescale is generally determined by the comprehensive effects of the baroclinic Rossby wave and the mean flow effects, in which the additional westward propagation plays a dominant role. Sea surface temperature (SST) changes in the Mediterranean Sea have profound impacts on both the Mediterranean regions and remote areas. Previous studies show that the Mediterranean SST has significant decadal variability that is comparable with the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV). However, few studies have discussed the characteristics and sources of the decadal predictability of Mediterranean SST based on observations. Here for the first time we use observational datasets to reveal that the decadal predictability of Mediterranean SST is contributed by both external forcings and internal variability for both annual and seasonal means, except that the decadal predictability of the winter mean SST in the eastern Mediterranean is mostly contributed by only internal variability. Besides, the persistence of the Mediterranean SST is quite significant even in contrast with that in the subpolar North Atlantic, which is widely regarded to have the most predictable surface temperature on the decadal time scale. After the impacts of external forcings are removed, the average prediction time of internally generated Mediterranean SST variations is more than 10 years and closely associated with the multidecadal variability of the Mediterranean SST that is closely related to the accumulated North Atlantic Oscillation forcing. Using a state-of-the-art coupled general circulation model, physical processes underlying Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability and predictability are investigated. Our model simulations constrained with atmospheric reanalysis and observed sea surface temperature broadly capture the observed sea ice extent (SIE) variability with a low sea ice state (late 1970s-1990s) and a high sea ice state (2000s-early 2010s), although the model overestimates the SIE decrease over the Weddell Sea around the 1980s. The low sea ice state is largely due to an occurrence of strong deep convection in the Southern Ocean that subsequently induces anomalous warming of the upper ocean. During the high sea ice period (post-2000s), the deep convection substantially weakens, so that surface wind variability plays greater roles in the SIE variability. Decadal retrospective forecasts started from the above-mentioned constrained model results demonstrate that the Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability can be skillfully predicted 6-10 years in advance, showing a moderate correlation with the observation (0.4). Ensemble members with a stronger deep convection tend to predict a larger sea ice decrease in the 1980s, whereas the members with a larger surface wind variability tend to predict a larger sea ice increase after the 2000s. Therefore, skillful simulation and prediction of the Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability require accurate simulation and prediction of both the Southern Ocean deep convection and surface wind variability in the model. The relative importance of ocean and atmospheric dynamics in generating Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) remains an open question. Comparisons between climate models with a slab ocean (SLAB) and fully dynamic ocean components (FULL) are often used to explore this question, but cannot reveal how individual ocean processes generate these differences. We build a hierarchy of physically interpretable stochastic models to investigate the contribution of two upper-ocean processes to AMV: the role of seasonal variation and mixed-layer entrainment. This interpretability arises from the stochastic model's simplified representation of sea surface temperature (SST), considering only the local upper-ocean response to white-noise atmospheric forcing and its impact on surface heat exchange. We focus on understanding differences between SLAB and FULL non-eddy-resolving preindustrial control simulations of the Community Earth System Model 1 (CESM), and estimate the stochastic model parameters from each respective simulation. Despite its simplicity, the stochastic model reproduces temporal characteristics of SST variability in the SPG, including reemergence, seasonal-to-interannual persistence, and power spectra. Furthermore, the unrealistically persistent SST of the CESM-SLAB ocean simulation is reproduced in the equivalent stochastic model configuration where the mixed-layer depth (MLD) is constant. The stochastic model also reveals that vertical entrainment primarily damps SST variability, thus explaining why SLAB exhibits larger SST variance than FULL. The stochastic model driven by temporally stochastic, spatially coherent forcing patterns reproduces the canonical AMV pattern. Changes in the amplitude of decadal climate variability over the twentieth century have been noted, with most evidence derived from tropical Pacific sea surface temperature records. However, the length, spatial coverage, and stability of most instrumental records are insufficient to robustly identify such nonstationarity, or resolve its global spatial structure. Here, it is found that the long-term, stable, observing platform provided by tide gauges reveals a dramatic increase in the amplitude and spatial coherence of decadal (11–14-yr period) coastal sea level (ζ) variability between 1960 and 2000. During this epoch, western North American ζ was approximately out of phase with ζ in Sydney, Australia, and led northeastern U.S. ζ by approximately 1–2 years. The amplitude and timing of changes in decadal ζ variability in these regions are consistent with changes in atmospheric variability. Specifically, central equatorial Pacific wind stress and Labrador Sea heat flux are highly coherent and exhibit contemporaneous, order-of-magnitude increases in decadal power. These statistical relationships have a mechanistic underpinning: Along the western North American coastline, equatorial winds are known to drive rapidly propagating ζ signals along equatorial and coastal waveguides, while a 1–2-yr lag between Labrador Sea heat fluxes and northeastern United States ζ is consistent with a remotely forced, buoyancy-driven, mechanism. Tide gauges thus provide strong independent support for an increase in interbasin coherence on decadal time scales over the second half of the twentieth century, with implications for both the interpretation and prediction of climate and sea level variability. Significance Statement: Decadal climate variability influences the frequency and severity of many natural hazards (e.g., drought), with considerable human and ecological impacts. Understanding observed changes and predicting future impacts relies upon an understanding of the physical processes and any changes in their variability and relationship over time. However, identifying such changes requires very long observational records. This paper leverages a large set of tide gauge records to show that decadal time scale coastal sea level variability increased dramatically in the second half of the twentieth century, in widely separated geographic locations. There is a growing debate regarding the influence of solar activity on climate change as the solar forcing signal on decadal/multidecadal timescales is not robust in long-term reconstructed climate data or numerical simulations. However, solar forcing could be amplified by ocean–atmosphere coupling in sensitive regions, including the North Atlantic Ocean (N.A.). This study assessed the influence of varied total solar irradiance (TSI) due to the effects of solar activity on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) based on an Earth System model with intermediate complexity (PLASIM-GENIE). Three groups of experiments with different TSI series; i.e., constant (NS), decadal varied (DS), and reconstructed whole (AS) for 1610–2000, were conducted and the AMOC response was investigated. The results showed that the internal forcing of the climate system led to quasi-35-year and quasi-65-year AMOC cycles and a significant and stable negative correlation between TSI and AMOC on a multidecadal timescale. The period was significantly extended due to solar forcing. The declining AMOC trend occurred in simulations after 1800. Thus, solar forcing contributed to a weakening AMOC at a rate of 0.41 Sv per century. The decadal variation in TSI was the main contributor to this decline due to solar forcing.

Multidecadal variability in the North Atlantic jet stream in general circulation models (GCMs) is compared with that in reanalysis products of the twentieth century. It is found that almost all models exhibit multidecadal jet stream variability that is entirely consistent with the sampling of white noise year-to-year atmospheric fluctuations. In the observed record, the variability displays a pronounced seasonality within the winter months, with greatly enhanced variability toward the late winter. This late winter variability exceeds that found in any GCM and greatly exceeds expectations from the sampling of atmospheric noise, motivating the need for an underlying explanation. The potential roles of both external forcings and internal coupled ocean–atmosphere processes are considered. While the late winter variability is not found to be closely connected with external forcing, it is found to be strongly related to the internally generated component of Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) in sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In fact, consideration of the seasonality of the jet stream variability within the winter months reveals that the AMV is far more strongly connected to jet stream variability during March than the early winter months or the winter season as a whole. Reasoning is put forward for why this connection likely represents a driving of the jet stream variability by the SSTs, although the dynamics involved remain to be understood. This analysis reveals a fundamental mismatch between late winter jet stream variability in observations and GCMs and a potential source of long-term predictability of the late winter Atlantic atmospheric circulation.

Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) is a cornerstone for decadal prediction and profoundly influences regional and global climate variability, yet its fundamental drivers remain an issue for debate. Studies suggest that external forcing may have affected AMV during the Little Ice Age (AD 1400–1860). However, the detailed mechanism remains elusive, and the AMV's centennial to millennial variations over the past 2000 years have not yet been explored. We first show that proxy-data reconstructions and paleo-data assimilations suggest a significant 60-yr AMV during AD 1250–1860 but not during AD 1–1249. We then conducted a suite of experiments with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to unravel the causes of the changing AMV property. The simulation results under all external forcings match the reconstructions reasonably well. We find that the significant 60-yr AMV during 1250–1860 arises predominantly from the volcano forcing variability. During the period 1–1249, the average volcanic eruption intensity is about half of the 1250–1860 intensity, and a 20–40-yr internal variability dominates the AMV. The volcanic radiative forcing during 1250–1860 amplifies AMV and shifts the internal variability peak from 20–40 years to 60 years. The volcano forcing prolongs AMV periodicity by sustaining Arctic cooling, delaying subpolar sea ice melting and atmospheric feedback to reduce surface evaporation. These slow-response processes over the subpolar North Atlantic results in a persisting reduction of sea surface salinity, weakening the Atlantic overturning circulation, and warm water transport from the subtropical North Atlantic. The results reveal the cause of the nonstationary AMV over the past two millennia and shed light on the AMV's response to external forcing. Significance Statement: AMV plays an important role in the regional and global climate variability. The purpose of this study is to better understand the secular change of AMV during the past 2000 years and its response to the external forcing. Proxy data and model simulation consistently show a significant 60-yr AMV during AD 1250–1860 that is absent during AD 1–1249. Active volcanic eruptions during 1250–1860 amplify the AMV and shift its intrinsic 20–40-yr to a prominent 60-yr variance peak. The Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) switched from a cool to a warm phase in 1995 and the mean euphotic zone (EZT) and sea surface temperature (SST) shifted upward by 0.57° and 0.69°C, respectively, between 1982–91 and 2006–15 in the Atlantic region off northwest Africa. This ocean margin has many marine fisheries, and water temperature fluctuations may cause fish there to switch their habitats. Net radiation flux did not significantly change between these two decades. So, we hypothesized that the key driver of the EZT and SST increase is wind, which controls turbulent (sensible and latent) heat exchange with the atmosphere as well as bulk vertical and horizontal heat transport. Using satellite-derived SST and atmospheric and oceanic reanalyses to analyze the ocean top-200-m heat budget, we compared the relative contributions of the heat budget components to the cyclical changes in EZT and SST between these two decades. Results showed that the dominant heat source is horizontal heat flux convergence: weaker northeasterly trades and stronger southerly winds and monsoon enabled the southerly winds to drive warm water northward that subsequently warmed the domain. The dominant heat sink is latent heat loss: onshore–offshore atmospheric pressure gradients caused a complex wind adjustment that enabled the Sahara wind to accelerate evaporation over large subregions. These results highlight the important roles of ocean heat transport and atmosphere–ocean coupling for the tropical branch of the AMV. A multiproxy oxygen and carbon isotope (δ13C and δ18O), growth rate, and trace element stalagmite paleoenvironmental record is presented for the Early Holocene from Ethiopia. The annually laminated stalagmite grew from 10.6 to 10.4 ka and from 9.7 to 9.0 ka with a short hiatus at ~9.25 ka. Statistically significant and coherent spectral frequencies in δ13C and δ18O are observed at 15-25 and 19-23 years, respectively. The observed ~1‰amplitude variability in stalagmite δ18O is likely forced by nonequilibrium deposition, due to kinetic effects during the progressive degassing of CO2 from the water film during stalagmite formation. These frequencies are similar to the periodicity reported for other Holocene stalagmite records from Ethiopia, suggesting that multidecadal variability in stalagmite δ18O is typical. Several processes can lead to this multidecadal variability and operate in different directions. A hydroclimate forcing is likely the primary control on the extent of the partial evaporation of soil and shallow epikarst water and associated isotopic fractionation. The resulting oxygen isotope composition of percolation water is subsequently modulated by karst hydrology. Further isotopic fractionation is possible in-cave during nonequilibrium stalagmite deposition. The Northern hemispheric circum global teleconnection (CGT) pattern is thought to be maintained by two main forcings—viz-diabatic heating associated with the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and barotropic instability generation over the jet exit region over the North Atlantic. The CGT and ISM impacts one another through the circulation responses over West central Asia (WCA). In this study we revisit the CGT-ISM interactions focusing on the WCA region and try to understand whether the downstream impact of CGT on ISM dominates over the ISM feedback on CGT. Analysis indicates that the Atlantic forced CGT responses play a lead role in modulating the ISM in the interannual timescale, by modulating the upper-level anticyclones over WCA and in turn affecting the ISM easterly vertical wind shear. Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation (AMO) is a major driver of ISM variability in the multi-decadal time scale and the AMO is associated with an arching wave-train of teleconnection across Eurasia. Our analysis indicates significant modulation of WCA anomalies by the AMO in the multi-decadal time scale, implying that the Atlantic-CGT-WCA-ISM pathway of teleconnection has a low frequency counterpart. We further demonstrate that the observed out of phase relationship between AMO and ISM in the recent decades, may be attributed to the relatively stronger high latitude warming over the north Atlantic during the recent AMO warm phase. The equivalent barotropic responses to the extra-tropical north Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies alter the entire downstream teleconnection pattern producing cyclonic anomalies over WCA and in turn weakening the ISM.

Analyzing gradual trends in meteorological drought has become increasingly important as anthropogenic climate change and natural climate variability interact to complicate measurement of drought severity. Complex seasonality and long-term trends pose a limitation in understanding spatial trends in nonstationary changes of meteorological drought in the United States. This study seeks to address this issue by simultaneously analyzing recurring seasonal patterns (stationary component) and long-term drought trends (nonstationary component), with a unique focus on nonlinear trends and common regional patterns. We analyzed 696 instrumental precipitation gauges with long historical records in the continental United States, using a novel spline-based model to disaggregate a 3-month meteorological drought index (SPI) into its seasonal and long-term components. The disaggregated components for each gauge were then clustered into subregions with similar seasonality and groupings with similar long-term trends using a two-step process. Our results identify clearly defined regions based on precipitation seasonality, while long-term trends are not spatially coherent with the seasonality. Instead, these findings support prior findings of an increasingly drier western United States and an increasingly wetter eastern United States over the last century, but with more nuanced spatial and temporal patterns. The new clustering analysis based on nonstationary meteorological drought trends can contribute to informing and adapting current water management strategies to long-term drought trends. Significance Statement: This study considered 656 precipitation gauges across the continental United States to find regions with similar precipitation seasonality and then to group records with similar long-term climate trends. The study focused on 3-month average precipitation, a key indicator for drought monitoring. We identified eight regions across the United States with similar precipitation seasonality. From 1920 to the present, we found continuous drying trends throughout the western United States, continuously wetter trends in the northern plains, and an overall wetter trend interrupted by a midcentury dry period (1930–50) for much of the central Plains and Midwest. This study's use of splines, or fitted curves, allowed these nonlinear patterns, which we believe better capture the nuances and intensification of climate change effects on precipitation. Multidecadal variability of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has been reconstructed by various proxies, simulated in climate models, and linked to multidecadal Arctic salinity variability. Here we construct a simple conceptual model to understand the two‐way interactions of the Arctic with multidecadal AMOC variability through a delayed oscillator mechanism. We revise Stommel's Two‐Box Model by including an advective time delay for the Arctic density/salinity anomalies to reach the subpolar North Atlantic and a coupled negative feedback between the AMOC and the freshwater flux entering the Arctic through atmosphere and/or sea ice responses. Self‐sustained multidecadal AMOC oscillations exist in the revised Stommel's Two‐Box model if the oceanic advective time delay is longer than the oscillation threshold, and the periods of the AMOC delayed oscillator depend crucially on this advective time delay. The coupled freshwater feedback provides additional delayed negative feedback and reduces the advective time delay threshold required for the oscillations. In our study, we revise Stommel's Two‐Box model by considering the delayed oceanic advective time lag for the Arctic density/salinity anomalies to reach the subpolar North Atlantic and the dependence of the freshwater flux entering the Arctic on the AMOC strength. The revised Stommel's Two‐Box Model is able to obtain the AMOC delayed oscillator at multidecadal timescales and suggests the important role of the Arctic salinity anomalies and associated delayed negative feedback in the multidecadal AMOC variability. The regimes and multidecadal periods of the AMOC delayed oscillator depend crucially on the advective time scale of the Arctic signal reaching the subpolar North Atlantic. The AMOC‐related coupled freshwater feedback provides additional delayed negative feedback and reduces the threshold of the advective time delay needed for the multidecadal AMOC oscillations. We examine a 1000-yr-long forced historical run of the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (henceforth, past1000) with respect to freshwater-induced sea surface height (SSH) variability in the Arctic Ocean, with a focus on time scales up to and longer than centuries. As a test of the degree to which sea surface height and freshwater content covariability is due to internal climate variability in the model, and how much is due to external forcing, the past1000 results are compared to a control run using the same model, (henceforth, Ctl-P). We find that the freshwater transport associated with circulation changes, the freshwater input at the surface from the atmosphere and runoff, and ice export out of the Arctic jointly contribute to the centennial-scale freshwater variability in the Arctic. Low-frequency winds generate freshwater variability mostly through ocean circulation changes, but appear to be less important compared with earlier studies. The ice transport varies most clearly with Arctic air temperatures, and it appears that ice thickness variability is at least as important as the wind and ocean current transport variability. The largest difference in freshwater forcing in the forced run, compared to Ctl-P, is enhanced precipitation variability driven by the volcanic forcing only present in the forced, past1000 run. This study explores the possible drivers of the recent Hadley circulation strengthening in the modern reanalyses. Predominantly, two recent generations of reanalyses provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts are used: the fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5) and the interim reanalysis (ERA-Interim). Some results are also evaluated against other long-term reanalyses. To assess the origins of the Hadley cell (HC) strength variability, we employ the Kuo–Eliassen (KE) equation. ERA5 shows that both HCs were strengthening prior to the 2000s, but they have been weakening or remained steady afterward. Most of the long-term variability in the strength of the HCs is explained by the meridional gradient of diabatic (latent) heating, which is related to precipitation gradients. However, the strengthening of both HCs in ERA5 is larger than the strengthening expected from the observed zonal-mean precipitation gradient [estimated from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP)]. This suggests that the HC strength trends in the recent decades in ERA5 can be explained partly as an artifact of the misrepresentation of latent heating and partly through (physical) long-term variability. To show that the latter is true, we analyze ERA5 preliminary data for the 1950–78 period, other long-term (e.g., twentieth century) reanalyses, and sea surface temperature observational data. This reveals that the changes in the HC strength can be a consequence of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) and related diabatic and frictional processes, which in turn drive the global HC variability. The standardized precipitation index (SPI) measures meteorological drought relative to historical climatology by normalizing accumulated precipitation. Longer record lengths improve parameter estimates, but these longer records may include signals of anthropogenic climate change and multidecadal natural climate fluctuations. Historically, climate nonstationarity has either been ignored or incorporated into the SPI using a quasi-stationary reference period, such as the WMO 30-yr period. This study introduces and evaluates a novel nonstationary SPI model based on Bayesian splines, designed to both improve parameter estimates for stationary climates and to explicitly incorporate nonstationarity. Using synthetically generated precipitation, this study directly compares the proposed Bayesian SPI model with existing SPI approaches based on maximum likelihood estimation for stationary and nonstationary climates. The proposed model not only reproduced the performance of existing SPI models but improved upon them in several key areas: reducing parameter uncertainty and noise, simultaneously modeling the likelihood of zero and positive precipitation, and capturing nonlinear trends and seasonal shifts across all parameters. Further, the fully Bayesian approach ensures all parameters have uncertainty estimates, including zero precipitation likelihood. The study notes that the zero precipitation parameter is too sensitive and could be improved in future iterations. The study concludes with an application of the proposed Bayesian nonstationary SPI model for nine gauges across a range of hydroclimate zones in the United States. Results of this experiment show that the model is stable and reproduces nonstationary patterns identified in prior studies, while also indicating new findings, particularly for the shape and zero precipitation parameters. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: We typically measure how bad a drought is by comparing it with the historical record. With long-term changes in climate or other factors, however, a typical drought today may not have been typical in the recent past. The purpose of this study is to build a model that measures drought relative to a changing climate. Understanding drivers of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice on multidecadal timescales is key to reducing uncertainties in long-term climate projections. Here we investigate the impact of ocean heat transport (OHT) on sea ice, using pre-industrial control simulations of 20 models participating in the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). In all models and in both hemispheres, sea ice extent is negatively correlated with poleward OHT. However, the similarity of the correlations in both hemispheres hides radically different underlying mechanisms. In the northern hemisphere, positive OHT anomalies primarily result in increased ocean heat convergence along the Atlantic sea ice edge, where most of the ice loss occurs. Such strong, localised heat fluxes ( ∼ 100 W m - 2 ) also drive increased atmospheric moist-static energy convergence at higher latitudes, resulting in a pan-Arctic reduction in sea ice thickness. In the southern hemisphere, increased OHT is released relatively uniformly under the Antarctic ice pack, so that associated sea ice loss is driven by basal melt with no direct atmospheric role. These results are qualitatively robust across models and strengthen the case for a substantial contribution of ocean forcing to sea ice uncertainty, and biases relative to observations, in climate models. Previous studies have demonstrated that the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) could affect El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) through thermocline adjustment, with a stronger ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) amplitude during a negative AMO phase than during a positive phase. In this study, we find that the ENSO atmospheric anomaly amplitudes in the tropical Pacific during different AMO phases are not necessarily consistent with these ENSO SST changes. For El Niño episodes, the low-level wind and precipitation anomalies over the tropical Pacific in the boreal winter are more pronounced during the negative AMO phase than during the positive phase, corresponding well to the stronger SST anomalies. However, La Niña events during the negative AMO phase are accompanied by weaker atmospheric anomalies in the tropical Pacific, although their SST anomalies are stronger than those during the positive phase. We suggest that this mismatch between La Niña SST and atmospheric anomalies can be largely attributed to AMO decadal modulation. A positive AMO favors intensified trade winds and weakened precipitation in the central tropical Pacific by modifying Walker circulation. Therefore, when La Niña coincides with a positive AMO, the low-level easterly and negative precipitation anomalies are superimposed, which gives rise to stronger atmospheric perturbations. In contrast, under a negative AMO background, the atmospheric anomalies induced by La Niña anomalous SST are partly counteracted by the AMO remote decadal modulation, thereby resulting in weaker anomaly amplitudes. Significant surface air temperature warming during summer 1979–2020 is not uniformly distributed in the northern midlatitudes over land but rather is confined to several longitudinal sectors including Europe, central Siberia and Mongolia, and both coasts of North America. These hot spots are accompanied by a chain of high pressure ridges from an anomalous, circumglobal Rossby wave train in the upper troposphere. From reanalysis data and several baseline experiments from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), we find that the circulation trend pattern is associated with fluctuations of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) and the interdecadal Pacific oscillation. The phase shift of AMV in the 1990s is particularly noteworthy for accelerating warming averaged over the northern midlatitude land. The amplitude of the observed trend in both surface air temperature and the upper-level geopotential height generally falls beyond the range of multidecadal trends simulated by the CMIP6 preindustrial control runs, supporting the likelihood that anthropogenic forcing played a critical role in the observed trend. On the other hand, the fidelity of the simulated low-frequency modes of variability and their teleconnections, especially on multidecadal time scales, is difficult to assess because of the relatively short observational records. Our mechanistic modeling results indicate that synoptic eddy–mean flow interaction is a key to the formation of the anomalous wave train but how the multidecadal modes can modulate the synoptic eddies through atmosphere–ocean and atmosphere–land interactions remains poorly understood. The Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV), a dominant mode of multidecadal variations in North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (NASST), has major impacts on global climate. Given that both internal variability and external forcing have contributed to the historical AMV, how future anthropogenic forcing may regulate the AMV is of concern but remains unclear. By analyzing observations and a large ensemble of model simulations [i.e., the Max Planck Institute Grand Ensemble (MPI-GE)], the internally generated (AMVIV) and externally forced (AMVEX) components of the AMV and their climatic impacts during the twenty-first century are examined. Consistent with previous findings, the AMVIV would weaken with future warming by 11%–17% in its amplitude by the end of the twenty-first century, along with reduced warming anomaly over the midlatitude North Atlantic under future warming during the positive AMVIV phases. In contrast, the AMVEX is projected to strengthen with reduced frequency under future warming. Furthermore, future AMVIV-related temperature variations would weaken over Eurasia and North Africa but strengthen over the United States, whereas AMVIV-related precipitation over parts of North America and Eurasia would weaken in a warmer climate. The AMVEX's impact on global precipitation would also weaken. The results provide new evidence that future anthropogenic forcing (i.e., nonlinear changes in GHGs and aerosols) under different scenarios can generate distinct multidecadal variations and influence the internally generated AMV, and that multidecadal changes in anthropogenic forcing are important for future AMV. Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) impacts temperature, precipitation, and extreme events on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Previous studies with climate models have suggested that when external radiative forcing is held constant, the large-scale ocean and atmosphere circulation are associated with sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies that have similar characteristics to the observed AMV. However, there is an active debate as to whether these internal fluctuations driven by coupled atmosphere–ocean variability remain influential to the AMV on multidecadal time scales in our modern, anthropogenically forced climate. Here we provide evidence from multiple large ensembles of climate models, paleoreconstructions, and instrumental observations of a growing role for external forcing in the AMV. Prior to 1850, external forcing, primarily from volcanoes, explains about one-third of AMV variance. Between 1850 and 1950, there is a transitional period, where external forcing explains one-half of AMV variance, but volcanic forcing only accounts for about 10% of that. After 1950, external forcing explains three-quarters of AMV variance. That is, the role for external forcing in the AMV grows as the variations in external forcing grow, even if the forcing is from different sources. The use of global climate model (GCM) precipitation simulations typically requires corrections for precipitation biases at subgrid spatial scales, typically at daily or monthly time scales. However, over many regions GCMs underestimate the magnitudes of multiyear precipitation extremes in the observed climate, resulting in a likely underestimation of the magnitudes of multiyear precipitation extremes in future scenarios. The objective of this study is to propose a method to extract from GCMs more realistic scenarios of multiyear precipitation extremes over time horizons of decades to one century. This proposed correction method is analogous to widely used bias correction methods, except that it is applied to variability at longer time scales than previous implementations (i.e., multiyear rather than daily or monthly). A case study of precipitation over a basin from the New York City water supply system demonstrates the potential magnitude of the underestimation of multiyear precipitation using uncorrected GCM scenarios, and the potential impact of the correction on multiyear hydrological extremes. Overall, it is a practical, conceptually simple approach meant for water supply system impact studies, but can be used for any impact studies that require more realistic multiyear extreme precipitation extreme scenarios. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to present a practical method to address a particular difficulty that in some regions arises in climate change impact studies: global climate models tend to underestimate the multiyear variability of precipitation over some regions, resulting in an underestimation of the magnitudes and/or intensities of prolonged droughts as well as prolonged wet periods. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the winter NAO on the multidecadal variability of winter East Asian surface air temperature (EASAT) and EASAT decadal prediction. The observational analysis shows that the winter EASAT and East Asian minimum SAT (EAmSAT) display strong in-phase fluctuations and a significant 60–80-year multidecadal variability, apart from a long-term warming trend. The winter EASAT experienced a decreasing trend in the last two decades, which is consistent with the occurrence of extremely cold events in East Asia winters in recent years. The winter NAO leads the detrended winter EASAT by 12–18 years with the greatest significant positive correlation at the lead time of 15 years. Further analysis shows that ENSO may affect winter EASAT interannual variability, but does not affect the robust lead relationship between the winter NAO and EASAT. We present the coupled oceanic-atmospheric bridge (COAB) mechanism of the NAO influences on winter EASAT multidecadal variability through its accumulated delayed effect of ∼15 years on the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Africa–Asia multidecadal teleconnection (AAMT) pattern. An NAO-based linear model for predicting winter decadal EASAT is constructed on the principle of the COAB mechanism, with good hindcast performance. The winter EASAT for 2020–34 is predicted to keep on fluctuating downward until ∼2025, implying a high probability of occurrence of extremely cold events in coming winters in East Asia, followed by a sudden turn towards sharp warming. During the winter, the cold wave activity over the mid-high latitudes has profound impacts on agriculture, economic and human wellbeing. Such extreme weather events have been connected with the East Asia winter monsoon system and significantly influence the climate over the Eurasian continent. However, the multidecadal variabilities and regional interconnections of the cold wave activity across the Northern Hemisphere are lesser-known. In this study, we investigate the multidecadal variations in the cold wave frequency (CWF) and find an inverse relationship between Greenland and central Eurasia. Observational and modeling evidence suggests that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is likely to be the driving force of the multidecadal seesaw in CWF, while the effects of the Arctic sea ice are very limited. The increased sea surface temperature (SST) in association with the AMO warms the subpolar troposphere and weakens the predominant westerlies over mid-high latitudes, resulting in positive geopotential height anomalies over the subpolar region. This further weakens the Icelandic Low and strengthens the Siberian High, which directly induces the warming (cooling) over Greenland (central Eurasia). There is a strong coherence between the mean state of surface air temperature and temperature extremes. The AMO-induced warming/cooling in Greenland/central Eurasia corresponds well with less/more frequent cold wave activities. In this research we make use of historical wind direction observations to assemble an instrumental upwelling intensity index (the so‐called Directional Upwelling Index [DUI]) for the coast of Northwest Africa between 26° and 33°N and from 1825 to 2014. The DUI is defined as the persistence of the alongshore winds at the coast and unlike other upwelling indices, it relies on observed wind direction solely, avoiding the suspected bias toward increasing wind speed of historical wind observations documented in previous research. We have found that between June and October, when the upwelling intensity in the area is at its seasonal maximum, the persistence of the north‐easterlies measured by the DUI is significantly related to the alongshore wind stress and subsequently with Sea Surface Temperature anomalies at the coast of NW Africa. The analysis of the DUI record does not display a consistent long‐term trend but an oscillatory behavior. At interannual time scales this variability can be linked to the changes in the strength and location of the subtropical north Atlantic high‐pressure center and at multidecadal scales, the upwelling seems mainly driven by the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability through the modulation exerted by this climatic pattern on the intensity of the Saharan low. This study broadly characterizes and compares the key processes governing internal Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) in two resolutions of HadGEM3-GC3.1: N216ORCA025, corresponding to ∼60 km in the atmosphere and 0.25° in the ocean, and N96ORCA1 (∼135 km in the atmosphere and 1° in the ocean). Both models simulate AMV with a time scale of 60–80 years, which is related to low-frequency ocean and atmosphere circulation changes. In both models, ocean heat transport convergence dominates polar and subpolar AMV, whereas surface heat fluxes associated with cloud changes drive subtropical AMV. However, details of the ocean circulation changes differ between the models. In N216 subpolar subsurface density anomalies propagate into the subtropics along the western boundary, consistent with the more coherent circulation changes and widespread development of SST anomalies. In contrast, N96 subsurface density anomalies persist in the subpolar latitudes for longer, so circulation anomalies and the development of SST anomalies are more centered there. The drivers of subsurface density anomalies also differ between models. In N216, the NAO is the dominant driver, while upper-ocean salinity-controlled density anomalies that originate from the Arctic appear to be the dominant driver in N96. Interactions between ocean basins affect El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), altering its impacts on society. Here, we explore the effect of Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) on ENSO behavior using idealized experiments performed with the NCAR‐CESM1 model. Comparing warm (AMV+) to cold (AMV−) AMV conditions, we find that ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are reduced by ∼10% and ENSO precipitation anomalies are shifted to the west during El Niño and east during La Niña. Using the Bjerknes stability index, we attribute the reduction in ENSO variability to a weakened thermocline feedback in boreal autumn. In AMV+, the Walker circulation and trade winds strengthen over the tropical Pacific, increasing the background zonal SST gradient. The background changes shift ENSO anomalies westwards, with wind stress anomalies more confined to the west. We suggest the changes in ENSO‐wind stress decrease the strength of the thermocline feedback in the east, eventually reducing ENSO growth rate. To investigate changes in global wind speed phenomena, we constructed homogenized monthly time series (1980–2018) for 4722 meteorological stations. Through examining monthly averaged wind speeds (MWS), we found that seasonal wind speed range (SWSR; calculated as the difference between maximum and minimum MWS) has declined significantly by 10% since 1980 (p < 0.001). This global SWSR reduction was primarily influenced by decreases in Europe (−19%), South America (−16%), Australia (−14%), and Asia (−13%), with corresponding rate reductions of −0.13, −0.08, −0.09, and −0.06 m s−1 decade−1, respectively (p < 0.01). In contrast, the SWSR in North America rose 3%. Important is that the decrease in SWSR occurred regardless of the stilling or reversal of annual wind speed. The shrinking SWSR in Australia and South America was characterized by continuous decreases in maximum MWS and increases in the minimum. For Europe and Asia, maximum and minimum MWS declined initially after 1980, followed by substantial increases in minimum MWS (about 2000 and 2012, respectively) that preserved the long-term reduction in the range. Most reanalysis products (ERA5, ERA-Interim, and MERRA-2) and climate model simulations (AMIP6 and CMIP6) fail to reproduce the observed trends. However, some ocean–atmosphere indices (seasonality characteristics) were correlated significantly with these trends, including the Western Hemisphere warm pool, East Atlantic pattern, Pacific decadal oscillation, and others. These findings are important for increasing the understanding of mechanisms behind wind speed variations that influence a multitude of other biogeophysical processes and the development of efficient wind power generation, now and in the future. Instrumental records suggest multidecadal variability in Arctic surface temperature throughout the twentieth century. This variability is caused by a combination of external forcing and internal variability, but their relative importance remains unclear. Since the early twentieth century Arctic warming has been linked to decadal variability in the Pacific, we hypothesize that the Pacific could impact decadal temperature trends in the Arctic throughout the twentieth century. To investigate this, we compare two ensembles of historical all-forcing twentieth century simulations with the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM): (1) a fully coupled ensemble and (2) an ensemble where momentum flux anomalies from reanalysis are prescribed over the Indo-Pacific Ocean to constrain Pacific sea surface temperature variability. We find that the combined effect of tropical and extratropical Pacific decadal variability can explain up to ~ 50% of the observed decadal surface temperature trends in the Arctic. The Pacific-Arctic connection involves both lower tropospheric horizontal advection and subsidence-induced adiabatic heating, mediated by Aleutian Low variations. This link is detected across the twentieth century, but the response in Arctic surface temperature is moderated by external forcing and surface feedbacks. Our results also indicate that increased ocean heat transport from the Atlantic to the Arctic could have compensated for the impact of a cooling Pacific at the turn of the twenty-first century. Major sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are the most important phenomena of the wintertime boreal stratospheric variability. During SSWs, the polar temperature increases abruptly, and easterlies prevail in the stratosphere. Their effects extend farther from the polar stratosphere, affecting near‐surface circulation. According to observations, SSWs are not equally distributed in time, with decades experiencing very few events, while others experiencing SSWs almost every winter. Some sources of this SSW multidecadal variability can be traced back to sea surface temperature changes. Here, we investigate the effects of Pacific decadal variability (PDV) and Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on SSWs. We use for the first time a large ensemble of historical experiments to examine the modulation of the frequency, tropospheric precursors, and impact of SSWs by the PDV and AMV. We find a strong impact of the PDV on the occurrence of SSWs, with a higher SSW frequency for the positive phase of the PDV. This PDV influence is mediated by constructive interference of PDV anomalies with tropospheric stationary waves. The main effect of AMV is, instead, a modulation of the tropospheric response to SSWs, a finding that can be useful for predicting the tropospheric fingerprint of SSWs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internal climate variability confounds estimates of the climate response to forcing but offers an opportunity to examine the dynamics controlling Earth's energy budget. This study analyzes the time-evolving impact of modes of low-frequency internal variability on global-mean surface temperature (GMST) and top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation in preindustrial control simulations from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The results show that the slow modes of variability with the largest impact on decadal GMST anomalies are focused in high-latitude ocean regions, where they have a minimal impact on global TOA radiation. When these regions warm, positive shortwave cloud and sea ice–albedo feedbacks largely cancel the negative feedback of outgoing longwave radiation, resulting in a weak net radiative feedback. As a consequence of the weak net radiative feedback, less energy is required to sustain these long-lived temperature anomalies. In contrast to these weakly radiating high-latitude modes, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a large impact on the global energy budget, such that it remains the dominant influence on global TOA radiation out to decadal and longer time scales, despite its primarily interannual time scale. These results show that on decadal and longer time scales, different processes control internal variability in GMST than control internal variability in global TOA radiation. The results are used to quantify the impact of low-frequency internal variability and ENSO on estimates of climate sensitivity from historical GMST and TOA-radiative-imbalance anomalies.
